I always turn on subtitles for video games too. Even in-game subtitles, and not just cinematic subtitles. But I hate closed captioning for tv... weird.

That is definitely a contributing factor for me. Now, I'm not a slow reader, but when reading subtitles, books, visual novels, etc., in my head I read things as if someone was speaking it, at the speed that they may be speaking it. I basically read things as you might hear when listening to an audio book. I have absolutely no idea why I do this, though. So when it comes to anime with English subtitles, I'll be reading too slowly, so I'll have to rush, and I just end up not enjoying it. Also, A.D.D. gives me tunnel vision; I end up either forgetting to read, or more commonly, focusing on the subtitles.

The polls speak for themself. This is my new poll page thanks to advice from sanahtlig. I would love English dubs of visual novels, but I would love visual novels designed for English/American audiences even more, because I could relate to it/understand the references more.

1) The title of this topic says "translated," meaning that the VN in its original, Japanese form already existed, or if the VN hasn't been released yet, if it were, it'd be released in both languages. 2A) It should be obvious that English VN means it's all in English, just how you would assume that a Japanese VN has both Japanese voice and text, unless otherwise stated. 2B) The part about people with better Japanese than English might be understood from my response to question 1. 2C) I couldn't think of any reason to not read English VNs other than the reasons, but that's a good point, so I added another unbiased choice. And there have been a ton of people in this thread/my previous one/other forums/etc. that absolutely refuse to watch EngDub Anime, so I included it as an option. The bias, as you call it, isn't to lead someone into answering a certain way. It's not like I wrote "Yes, I will exclusively read English VNs because I hate anything that isn't 'murican." or "No, I refuse to because I'm an asshole, and here's why:..."

Well, it doesn't have to be 100% translated into English. Certain words like that could be left there, and by context, the reader could learn Japanese. There's a lot of -chans, -sans, -sempais, -senseis, and -kuns in anime, games, and the like, even in English translations, and I'm fine with it.

Since my previous topic got, um... derailed, I figured I'd start this one and ask y'all if you would read VNs with English VN, and if not, why. I would exclusively read the English ones, but that's just me.

That's fine. I clearly said that it was purely my opinion, but you two took what I thought was an obvious hyperbole and got angry over it. Oh well. I doubt anyone new is going to read this topic and actually reply on topic, though..

Sorry, when I said "from what I read" I meant from their Wiki page. I didn't actually read it. I can see where that may be misleading. I'm pretty sure only pedophiles would be insulted by my analogy. So, I'm not saying you're a pedophile, but... you know.

Don't feel bad, they used google translate. That's how the line "All hail Satan!" in Japanese got translated into "It was a dark and stormy night..."

I'm kind of paranoid, so I like to think that the Japanese voice-acting isn't the same as the text, but is actually some secret, Satanic ritual. Which is why I prefer English Voice Acting.

At least I didn't throw any tridents at a guy.

I'm a native English speaker, and the only Japanese I know is from tv, video games, and Visual Novels. I like the English VAs because that's what I understand, and that's what I'm used to. Sure, some anime dubs have some bad voice acting (Persona 4 the Animation ruined some of the English voices from the game. I'm looking at you, Chie.) Then there are VAs like Shin Chan, Bobobo, Fullmetal Alchemist/Brotherhood, FLCL... (pretty much the only anime I've watched all the way through) that I think have great voice-acting. It all comes down to personal opinion. I'm not a fan of lolicon, and I can't imagine why anyone other than a pedophile would like to see pantyshots or worse of a 10 year old girl, but hey, that's just my opinion.

Thanks, I'll be sure to check it out! Edit: Darnit, I was excited until I saw it's for the 3DS. I don't have my 3DS yet, and I still haven't finished its indirect prequel 999 yet. Yeah, I know. Most things I like companies seem to think they're not worth making/translating. And by good, I didn't necessarily mean a masterpiece. I just finished the VN Jisei from Sakevisual, and it only lasted 1-2 hours, but it was still pretty interesting, especially knowing that it's not from a big company.

If anyone's interested, I actually found a few (supposedly English) VN from one company, at sakevisual.com. I have no idea how it'll turn out, though. Downloading as I write this~

Which part is more upsetting, the touchy-feely, romantic, or "friendship is magic?"

I think I remember seeing a youtube video where someone was recruiting people to do an English fandub of Ever17. I don't know how far it went, though. And yeah, VNs are a niche market already, an English one might be a waste of time and money (or maybe not, who knows?)

I've actually played Persona 3 and 4, but they're more akin to heavily story-based RPGs than Visual Novels. Yeah, I can imagine there not being many. I have friends who don't speak/read Japanese but absolutely refuse to watch EngDub Anime, and from what I've read that's a common sentiment. I guess I'm just the weird one who actually prefers to read and hear English.

After finishing two VNs and on my third and fourth (999, enjoying it so far and Fate/Stay, haven't read enough to tell). Unfortunately, I don't read or speak Japanese (although that Japanese Rosetta Stone has been staring at me for a long time), and that's why I love this site. However, all of VNs I've seen so far are Japanese-voiced, if at all. I always listen to the voice acting to get a sense of the emotion in their voice, but I would really love the ability to hear what they're saying and comprehend it, since sometimes translations lose jokes/meanings/whatnot. I've googled english-voiced VNs, and without spending forever searching, I only found Clannad. From what I read it's all touchy-feely, romantic, and "with loving friends/family, you do anything!" which is unappealing to me. I may be spoiled from my first two VNs being Ever17 and Remember11, though... Anywhoo. Are there any VNs with English voice acting out there? And by English I mean English and not Engrish.
