any way around it?

Hey guys, just downloaded Steve's version/the link he posted. i can't seem to get the game past the menu. The menu is in Japanese and the top choice is the start game button but once i click that i get brought to this screen still in Japanese where there is a box with "-<<" in it and i think i have to enter something into it but nothing works. there are two choices available (in Japanese) below the box, one resets whatever i write back to the arrows and the other takes me back to the home screen. would love to play this game but i can't seem to get started. help?
