  1. For info on this VN: vndb op I have sporadically heard some good feedback on this VN but I am skeptical of its merit, whether it told an unique story, has a great plot or explored some new area VN has not ventured. Info-dumping on Turing test, uncertainty principle is not going to impress me. Anyone care to say a few words on what it did best, what kind of audience it is aiming at, how vigorous its plot is?
  2. I will reply one last time and end this. I believe in the "irrational" things in life. Every rational human maximise his own interest. And strictly speaking we have no obligation other than religion code to alleviate others' suffering or misfortune. Were we all rational at all times, the world would be a bleak place. I know great things have been done out of some irrational belief or by irrational man. Not that I claim to be one of them but I believe the capacity of irrationality to do great good. I may have misplaced faith but I am not giving up on irrationality because of this. And no, I genuinely believe this is a meaningful post even to an indifferent spectator (this is irrational).
  3. Any philosophy that rely on companionship or friendship is ultimately coincidental. There is no reason why any two people meet. Since there is no reason it cannot be explained. I do agree that a social group with a shared interest constitutes a community that goes through high and low together but I personally do have that much faith in other people, considering the horrors in my society. I am not into sociology that much so I say no more. This discussion won't get anywhere. I have the feedback and we know each other better lets call it a day. Blessed are those who trust others and have others trust him.
  4. You are right though. I never begrudge someone so long what they say is true. I have the gene of a philosopher rather than a politician. A politician's ideology is a tool to reform the world and make is happier while a philosopher never concern its application. I appreciate the good will but considering Plato died without seeing his ideology fulfilled I don't deserve any better than what I have. I don't even deserve what I have. I live in a rather "special" society where VN or japanese culture can be your only salvation from society. Our government is corrupted and we have no democracy. We need to compete with our peer for a bare minimum level of income. If you can trust no government, no people, you trust what you enjoy or money. Anyone who compare VN to religion is on verge of insanity. And I do believe my example is more than a personal problem, it is a social phenomenon (at least in where I live).
  5. I used to believe VN's power to change a person, that it encourages bravery, fosters temperance, develops optimism. But after some unfavourable circumstances in life I realised VN has not made me a better person, neither mentally nor culturally. I can enjoy a great story but my life is still boring. I can appreciate interesting characters but I am still abhorred. I started to ask myself if VN cannot change life, is there still a reason to read them? The question haunts me everytime. Keep in mind I had faith in VN and it is no mere entertainment. At times I think this is all a useless sentiment, that I was naive to believe things are more than what they are. Just as the bible is just a book to non-christian, no more no less (don't take this comparison too serious, I am in no mood to debate). As a final judgement, I have to ask if anyone believe in the power of VN to change life. It is afterall futile in believing what no one else believes.
  6. Prob should have made this earlier but no point in introducing if that is the only post I make. Socially awkward and never get along with others. Has taken the role as a silent observer. Has a strong opinion about the world but would rather keep to myself. Irrational at times because irrational is better than insanity. Has a remote interest in literature and philosophy but not enough to dedicate myself into it. Facing an identity crisis of what kind of person I want to become. Has failed too many people's expectation to the point of not even being ashamed. Is that kind of person you would not want as a friend or colleague in real life. To be honest, I don't know why I even made this post. Would rather be left alone to save others' trouble. Realised that one single person's fate is insignificant to the whole of humanity. But have yet to let go. Like a lone survivor in some distant isle. Can either choose to live in solitude but somewhat self-sufficient or risk all to return to civilisation.
  7. I honestly don't know. This is not sarcasm. --- I recall some anime tend to use hair colour and eye colour to indicate some personality so having two eye colours could be a "condensation of variety". In some country flags different colours represent different ideology and I extend this notion to eye colours. This would appear to me that heterochromia is a physical metaphor for competing personality. Now this unstable psyche is certainly ideal for a writer or artist as much creativity is allowed without ruining the character. And to audiences, the competition of personality is romantic.
  8. This is meant to be an aesthetic question though. I did not make any claim such as heterochromia or malfunction is bad. That said, I should have been aware that giving example and comparison would not help in some cases. It is much easier to refute an example than an argument. But if you are subtly saying that comparing heterochromia and AIDS is offensive I would take notice.
  9. Heterochromia (particularly, eyes of different colour) has became a daily routine in anime/VN despite its rarity in life. Many find it attractive and charming. I try to locate the reason why people would prefer heterochromia, which is in principle a biological malfunction. I have yet to met a person who prefers a person with AIDS or genetic diseases. I failed to understand the difference that leads one to be prized and all others shunned. Surely artists do not care as long the characters sell but the reason it sells elude me. The only reason I can think of is scarcity but that does not explain its origin. Having run out of arsenal, I have to ask. Edit: Yes the AIDS example is bad and I would gladly take it back but my curiosity is not set back by it.
  10. Is there any VN that generates two windows for the two speaking characters? The lines of a character would not be overriden immediately after a sentence but stay until he speaks again or a third character joins in. The player can configure how many windows he seems fit for his monitor in the option menu. It is more than a visual feature as the two characters can act independently or the feature itself can be a plot device (meta-game has became prevalent). I can see the difficult present in full screen mode but the two windows can be combined into one just as using a browser. Resolution can be maintained while having more than one window. The real limiting factor is supposedly programming and hence ultimately money. I still ponder why there is RPG maker but not a comprehensive VN maker. I still run into unicode incompatibility occasionally but that is derailing. I may have to take the theory that the VN market does not generate enough money to motivate technological improvement.
  11. I stress the word "ever" so it is irrelevant if any VN published to date qualifies. This is meant as a hypothetical question of if VN would ever be in the same league as fiction, play, poetry etc as serious literature. Granted it is a commercial product and the script alone won't make a good VN just as a film is not defined solely by its play. But we have made enough assumptions so we may as well neglect the real world. If this is too void to discuss, I can paraphrase it: Does Stein's Gate deserve a Nebula Award if it was published as a fiction? I would personally say it amassed more fame than most science fiction, though I am aware of being misleading. Unable to add more, I pass the time to the more informed and perspicuous.
