Reading more Higurashi, and I'm really starting to dislike Keiichi. He's such a goddamn moron. I really dislike hot blooded characters who let their emotions control them to an extreme degree. It wasn't so bad in the first couple chapters when he was controlled by fear (although he was still really stupid) but he gets much worse in chapter 3. I hope he's okay again in chapter 4.

I especially dislike it when that hot bloodedness is left unpunished or even rewarded, but at least I know full well how there will be no happy endings in these first few chapters.

Hot bloodedness? I'd rather call that going right-out batshit crazy. I loved that scene where he lost it. And his reasoning becomes sharp clear after that, although it's tainted by insanity.

Since most characters end up going insane at some point or another I wouldn't expect too much cool, rational thinking and emotion control out of Higurashi though.

(Chapter 4 is a bit special, you won't see much Keiichi)

Just started Killer Queen (Kiss for the Petals was just too dull).

Can I post my impressions here since the KQ thread has spoilers?

Definitely getting

a 999 feel here - I've been kidnapped (?), and just woken up in a room very like 999's 1st room..

Chapter 2 Keiichi is a whore, I loove Higurashi but well, its protagonist isn't really interesting, same stuff for Umineko. Battler & Keiichi have a personality of course but they mostly serves the purpose of self-insertion. It's one of the very few things I blame concerning the When They Cry series :( .

Eh? Battler isn't even the narrator in Umineko. Contrary to Keiichi he has sprites right from the beginning, and hell he's probably not even there for a third of the scenes in the game.

As for Keiichi, well he's not worse than your average VN protag.

Kana's route in Canvas 2 is possibly the worst story I've ever read, with one of the best endings I've ever read.

It's like the guy responsible for Sakura Spirit wrote the route and the author from monster girl quest was in charge of the ending. A schizophrenic balance between garbage, beauty and "... huh, wait what just happend?".

I don't think I like Canvas 2 (enough to force myself through every character). I might go for something else next.

Wow a Higurashi discussion, and then the main topic is Keiichi's personality in different arcs ^^; I though he was a good enough protag to enjoy the story!  And he is a fitting main character for this kind of story. About Umineko.., I believe it still isn't clear, confirmed or generally accepted who the actual main character (the person you see the story through) is. So no thoughts on that one, besides that its still the best thing I've read so far.

How do those VNs work? I was thinking of jumping right to Secret Game, since it just looks like a remake of Killer Queen, but is it really?

It is a remake but there is probably different/more content in Secret Game. You can probably skip it, but there are some little references and moments that make it worth to read it too (if we have to believe the translator). Killer Queen isn't considered a great work, but it has its nice moments (and its budget problems that Secret Game didn't have).

It may be some time before Secret Game is translated though? Since Secret Game is a completely new story (I think?) I dont mind doing KQ first.

I don't think Secret Game is getting a translation, or at least not right now, yeah. I've read somewhere that Secret Game has slightly different endings, different personalities for some characters and one more route, but otherwise it should be the same as Killer Queen. So it's basically a remake as an official VN, as opposed to Killer Queen being a doujin.
