Recently I've been playing Magic the Gathering with Cockatrice (free program) and I thought it would be a lot of fun to have a group of people to play with regularly. If anyone is interested in playing Magic or learning how to do it (I would be glad to teach people or there are many tutorials online), you should post here. What I imagine is that we do a few things.

1. Create decks and compete with them in mini tournaments, just like you would in normal magic (except without buying tons of cards).

2. Have deckbuilding tournaments of sorts in which you have to create a deck while following certain stipulations (such as "No cards worth more than $5 on tcgplayer," etc)

3.Have a group of people to call on for casual games whenever you feel like playing.

Now, I'm not sure how much interest there is, but I think that it's a really fun game and exercising some deckbuilding skills is something that you might not get to do even if you play Magic now, unless you do a lot of draft or cube and so on. By playing online you can easily try a bunch of expensive decks and switch around a lot. That's also something that's hard in legit mtg unless you have a huge pile of cards. So I think there's a lot of freedom that playing online grants us.

As far as the details go, I imagine that we would have a weekly or bi-monthly tournament of sorts as mentioned in point 1 and 2. Probably alternate between these, unless there's a lot of favor for one over the other. I dont really know what people would want. Another thing is that using some sort of voice chatting software (skype/ts3/mumble/etc) would be highly advised, since Cockatrice is a little minimalistic and is much more engaging when you talk to your opponent. Not really sure how this would work, but I believe it can be worked out if people are interested.

So please post here and let me know, even if you're unsure and just want to try it out. I'd be glad to personally attempt to teach people to play if they wanted to add me on skype.

One of the advantages of TCG games is that the way cards are acquired is built into the game's learning curve - common cards give mechanics in a simple form so they can use the later cards without too much difficulty.  I've tried Cockatrice briefly, but having all the cards in the game is a detriment to new players, as having the choice of every card in the game for a new player is so much information that they would have difficulty following anything that wasn't a straight-up guide.

I'd keep this in mind when integrating new players, both in terms of rules and helping them figure out all the cards and how to deckbuild.  Starting with all the cards in the game is a heavy burden for new players - I might not join myself since I'm doing my writing, but it's good to keep this in note.

I'll be teaching kosaki how to play over Skype in elevenish hours if anyone wants to learn. I know that's probably too late for you, vance, so I can work with you another time if you don't want to just watch tutorials. Heh

As far as learning curve goes, I think we'll be okay, but if we ruin into issues I'll just make the first round be Starters set only or something

I'll try tutorials for now and I'll just fool around with the program itself. If you plan to use any kind of program to chat for this group cool with me.

I'd be down for it, haven't really played much MTG lately other than a few games with a friend on DOTP 2014. How is this program, though? It looks rather low quality, though that doesn't really mean it can't do what it needs to.

If you need something to compare it too, the most accurate thing would probably be the program in dueling network.

You gotta do everything manually.

It's fun learning it though. <3

Especially since you don't have to pay for all those super priced cards.

Yeah that's always a good thing. I was fine with DN when I used it, so I suppose using this wouldn't be too big of a deal. Does it have updated cards and all that jazz? And would we all be playing by a certain format? Or is it just anything goes?

I think the client is pretty easy to understand. Most of the functions you use all of the time are really simple and you can update the card database whenever new sets come out. We'll be playing Legacy or Modern mostly, but I also think it would be fun to create a format of our own and build decks with it every once in a while. So not always the same format but we want to be playing decks with the same limitations or else Legacy decks will end up beating Modern decks all the time and so on.

Btw, they have predefined tokens such as Marit Lage ^^

heh heh heh.

Let me know if you want me to teach you, Vance. It's been a lot of fun so far.

I should've said something before but lately I've kinda been a piece of shit and I've only been doing csgo pretty much. So today I'll open cockatrice and relearn the game(I was once taught it, but it's been way too long :P). If I encounter any major difficult I'll hit you up on skype ara ara.

Alright, jumped in through Skype recently with Ara and Kosaki.

Looking to get into deckbuilding a bit - looking into perhaps a Blue deck based around having the opponent discard, and maybe a Green elf-type deck.  Anyone have information on those?

Elves is really big right now in Modern and Legacy. Go to mtgtop8 and you can find it in their lists. I think it's regarded as a combo deck due to the super rampy nature of elves.

Actually black is the color associated with causing players to discard. Maybe something like this? http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/mono-black-discard-8/

I just googled it quickly. What you can do is find cards from those lists you like and edit then a little to your preference or ruin your synthesis by us?

That's also black. Cards like thoughtseize, duress, and inquisition of kozilek are for that purpose. You still need a way to win the game after you control their win condition though. You can splice blue for countermagic and run some big or recurring creatures. If you go mono-black then you should look into Phyrexian Obliterator
