Hayashi Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 Was reading some G-String today during my free period in school, and then one of my friends came over and asked me what I was doing. And the conversation was something like this.... Friend: What you doing bro? Me: Reading a VN Friend: Whats a VN? Me: Visual Novel. Plus a bunch of explanation on what a VN can offer and what they actually are. And then expect the unexpected answer l0l.... Friend: Oh alright why not go read a real book faggit. Left me speechless, ignored then continued on my reading. Seriously though, how would you guys react if you were faced with a similar situation? Quote

Jun Inoue Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 I'm not too shocked. Every big group discriminates the next group in the pecking order. People used to make fun of whoever read books. Those make fun of people who watch anime. Those make fun of the VN world. And the VN world hates itself and everyone. It's a vicious circle. Asonn and Chronopolis 2 Quote
Nimbus Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 I'm not entirely sure what would happen next, but I'm pretty sure a swift punch to the throat would be involved. Hayashi and havoc 2 Quote
AaronIsCrunchy Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 I'd either a) quietly stew for a bit and then drop a hella sore burn next time I see them reading (probably about the book they've got, the very practice of reading, their mum etc.) OR b) Hastily defend my reading of it, before making the point that I read actual books as well, all the while making an awful job of eye contact and speaking because it's some kind of confrontation (which is the way more likely response, if I'm honest). Fiddle Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 I'd like to take a step back and appreciate the fact that modern stereotypes have evolved to such a point that one can say, generally without rebuke, "Go read a book, [bundle of sticks]." Chronopolis and monkeysrumble 2 Quote
CeruleanGamer Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 I dont go reading visual novels in public because we got righteous transient a******* everywhere who believe there is only 1 way to do things. At least my VN novels are a better love story than your Twilight and have better sex scenes than your 50 Shades of Grey. yvetox and Hayashi 2 Quote

AaronIsCrunchy Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 50 Shades of Gay* xD Did you just. Perhaps you planted the seeds for someone else's beautiful foray into VNs though? Their reaction wasn't as bad as it could have been! Quote

Bolverk Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 Your friend prbly has shit taste in books. So I would point that out. Then berate him how good my taste is and therefore vn's has to be da best. Quote
Wonderfullyevil Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 Regardless of whether or not someone insults you for reading a VN Books are cool so read them. Or just ask what their favorite book is, read it (or a negative, legit review of it), bash it to hell, and call them a, "classless, tasteless, and awful excuse of a literate man/woman". Quote
firecat Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 i would say: "what if i told you, that this is an advance ebook from a famous series." i wouldn't say what a vn is but told him that a vn is a book inside a computer or ebook. Quote
Jade Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 What count as 'real book' exactly? Something that you can hold and have paper in it? Also a reader who enjoy reading wouldn't give a damn whether the thing that s/he read count as book or not cause they would actually focus on the content of the thing they read Quote
Nosebleed Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 "Does your book have cute waifus? I THINK NOT!" Alternatively, "I'm too busy with your mom to read books". Then just put some shades on and walk away. Quote
douggle Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 It's been a while since I last read a book, about a year or so, it was a book on Richard Ramirez, the Night Stalker. But I read every day online so its no biggy I read ebooks on top of VN Quote
Novel21 Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 I Would not be shocked and tell them like this Me: I like to read VN, so Why not try to read VN, VN are much better than books Friend: Its VN that intressing, mabey I shall try to read VN Me: Yes do that and Which you dont like to read VN, you can read books but I'm going to read VN instand for books I Would say something like that and try to Get my friend intressert in VN, its he/she not intresset I VN, he/she can just read books and I'm reading VN Quote
BladeRunner Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 Sounds like somebody you shouldn't be friends with if he doesn't respect your hobby and calls you demeaning words. Quote
Cyrillej1 Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 I'd just reply, "It is like reading a book though but with artwork. Plus, I like being able to make choices in the story, which makes me feel more involved, and I could also date the cute girls in it!" otherwise, I'd just shrug and ignore. Quote
Kawasumi Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 People that asks stuff like this needs the quickest answer because they arent worth your time so I think "k" will do. even better, you dont have to waste words! Just write a piece of paper with: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Quote

Darklord Rooke Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 Doesn't annoy me as much as "RIP in pieces" though, which always sets off a tic in my left eye. I can't really participate in this thread, cause I'm regularly telling internet acquaintances to stop reading so much manga and read a real book So... *whistles*... mmmmmmmm, isn't this awkward :3 Quote
