I don't know what people generally think about it since most either say they hate it or love the anime. I watched the anime and liked the first half of it but is the manga worth the read? I might buy the series if I like it enough

There are a lot of minor differences, but unless you are a superfan who wants to experience absolutely all of Death Note, you'd be fine with sticking to the anime.

I think obata draws gorgeous illustrations.

You should give it a try, maybe you'll like it, most people do.

Very few minor differences between the anime and the manga, so if you're looking for a totally different experience, you're not likely to get it.
The major difference I can remember is the last chapter, but not because it ends the story any differently, it just shows some extra scenes the anime did not.

It's not a bad manga though so if you don't mind re-reading the same story in its original format, I think you should go for it.

They are very similar. So depends on what media you prefer.

I honestly thought the anime was better than the manga. But both are well done.
