I didn't talk much about the characters. I guess this is a crucial point, heh.

Komachi Tsugumi is the best girl yo, whatcha talking about? 

What the fuck did you just fucking say about Sora, you little bitch? I’ll have you know she graduated top of her class in the Turing test, and she's been involved in numerous secret experiments in IBF, and she has over 300 confirmed visitors. She is trained in amusement park guidance and she's the top AI in the entire Japan entertainment sector. You are nothing to her but just another guest. She will guide you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to her over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak she's contacting her secret network of security cameras across LeMU and your ticket number is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. She can be anywhere, anytime, and she can guide you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with her bare hologram. Not only is she extensively trained in chicken sandwich marketing, but she has access to the entire arsenal of the Lieblich Pharmaceutical medical database and she will use it to its full extent to cure your miserable ass of Tief Blau, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. She will glitch fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

Ironically, despite my love of Ever17-esque "get the hell outta here" storylines, that isn't the reason for my love of Sora and her route. Sora's route is special to me not only because it's my first character-oriented route ever,  but because it tackles some questions I've never seen executed so beautifully, before or since. The whole "can AI love?" and "What makes us be considered human?" themes were handled beautifully, and I found the romance to be incredibly beautiful. The whole scene in the carousel, where Takeshi and Sora talk about love, and the scene where Sora stands behinds a pane of glass and Takeshi paints make-up over Sora's face, followed by a kiss through the glass were incredibly heartwarming. Takeshi's effort to save Sora at the end, and the route's "good" ending fucked my shit up as a result.

Sora is unique in that her plight is not survival, but her quest for the meaning of love. She feels more sincere and thanks to this difference in perspective, is far more interesting compared to all other characters. "When you close your eyes, I disappear"- so sorrowful...The AI is the most humane out of the bunch. She has talents beyond the capabilities of anyone in LeMU, but her knowledge is incredibly elementary in many ways- Takeshi teaches her about love, and she handles it maturely yet childlike at the same time; her wonder at feeling like a human isn't obnoxious and annoying like so many other characters out there, everything she does feels heartfelt and she feels like someone you can always rely on. Sora's route got me to care about Sora, unlike practically any other route (I was spoiled on Tsugumi's). I wanted to see her survive and somehow live with Takeshi, more so than any other two characters I've ever encountered in any story. Sora is complex, motherly, sincere, lovable, and beautiful.

This is why Sora is my favorite character in any media.

Not harsh at all, it's a fair score and a lot of good points were raised. At the end of the day Ever 17 is fairly overrated imo, and like you mentioned it has some real pacing and atmosphere building issues among other things.

Having read this recently, I must agree that it was really slow read at times and that the ending for some reason did not want to be logical.

However, were the routes really that bad in terms of writing and structure? When I was reading my first route, it was engaging and did set up a nice atmosphere. I think it was the fact that the routes had a lot of overlap and only subtle clues that makes it a boring read.

Ohhhh Ever17, the VN that has beaten me time and time again. I can not count the times that I picked it up and dropped it right the fuck back down. It's just sooooo boring, to this day I have only finished two routes. I just can not stick with it, no matter how many people tell me that the true end makes it all worth it.
