Jibril Posted March 19, 2016 Posted March 19, 2016 I just finished ULiL and I have to say it probably has the best in terms of direct storytelling of any Touhou games I've played. Sumireko's character seems believable and some characters flesh out their personalities more. Amazing character CGs with fun and comedic spells too (Youkai-jesus on a bike FTW). Best Touhou fighting game to date. It's coming to PS4 too! I'm currently playing LoLK and the point device mode is a Godsend from ZUN. OST isn't too bad but I prefer DDC more. Character designs are wackier than I thought. The story is... surprising since Spoiler It's arguably a direct sequel to ULiL Now patiently waiting for Reitaisai 13 with hopes of a new info on the new Touhou game. In the meantime, what's your favorite Touhou game? Or maybe even the fanmade games? Some of them has ridiculous high production value. Quote
Kaguya Posted March 19, 2016 Posted March 19, 2016 @Palas, I actually really liked LoLK, though it was a bit harder than it should've been (took me about 10 tries to finish that thing properly) Junko's danmaku is ugly (still challenging, though), but other than that the game is pretty solid. I feel like the nostalgia folk are just never going to admit anything can be better than the earlier windows games, so w/e. @Jibril, hm. As far as favorites go, Imperishable Night has a special place in my heart, for reasons that should be apparent if you look at my avatar. I also did bother to go through all the official stuff with the Eientei crew (as well as searching a disproportionate amount of fanwork on them), so I feel much closer to the cast. What about doujin music? Anyone here has any favorite works or circles? I'm particularly fond of Alstroemeria Works, though my favorite songs aren't actually from them. Quote
Kaguya Posted March 19, 2016 Posted March 19, 2016 @Palas I only did Legacy, haha. BS bombing helped out a lot in the later stages of the game <3 Pointdevice is an interesting concept, though. I feel like it's ultimately harder, (though it baits you out making it seem easier since your stupid mistakes won't force you to re-start the game ) and I don't wanna suffer that much. Talking about favorite songs, mine would be this one. Though it's really hard to pick. Another one I really like is Oath of Alliegiance by Foreground Eclipse, since I love the loyal-dog (cat?) type and it's an interesting take on Chen (nah, who am I kidding, it's just because it's a waifu song ) Quote

They both do very different genres, but I'm very fond of Demetori and East New Sound. Quote
Jibril Posted March 19, 2016 Author Posted March 19, 2016 With thousands of fan music in the internet, it's really damn hard for me to have a single favorite. Halozy, East New Sound, Kuroneko Lounge, Syrufit, Yonder Voice, Yuuhei Satellite, Foreground Eclispe, Silver Forest, TAMUSIC, etc.... ....even simple piano cover by Marasy is already amazing. Though if I have to really pick, my favorites right now are Yuuhei Satellite with their songs featured in the Fantasy Kaleidoscope series and Yonder Voice because I just adore the singer's voice. Oh yeah. Touhou also did have lots of fan anime like Fantasy Kaleidscope, Hifuu Club Activity Record, Summer's Day Dream or maybe for short ones such as Kinema Kan, Infinite World by SOUNDHOLIC, AQUASTYLE's Magical Maid☆Sakuya-chan VS Miracle★Sanae-chan. Did any of you watch them? @Kaguya I like the Pointdevice mode and it's funny how ZUN makes it into part of the story with Eirin's drug that can reverse time. But because of this, if you're stuck with a boss battle it's like you're forcing your playable character stuck in a merciless time loop... Quote
Kaguya Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 @Jibril Pointdevice is too merciless to me. It looked like it'd be the picture-taking games all over again (albeit easier), and the amount of time I spent to complete those things was... I'm not the type that easily messes up early stages, so I'd much rather gather me some bombs and lives in the early stages than take each part of the game separately. @Thunderbro Oh, I see. I'm fond of East New Sound and Demetori as well. As far as East New Sound goes, Inscribe Your Soul is one of my favorite songs. Oh, another one of my favorites is this one - Syrufit makes some great stuff, imo. Quote
Kaguya Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 @Palas My actual touhou waifu is Ran, I just throw Chen in as a package bonus for the most part Both have similar yet different charms. Hm. A Phantasmagoria, huh. I remember Medicine was OP in the last one. Really liked playing her back in the day. I'll just riot if there's no playable Kaguya, though. They were going to add her in Hisoutensoku, but didn't have enough time to... On the topic of touhou waifus, do y'all have one? Quote
Jibril Posted March 20, 2016 Author Posted March 20, 2016 @Kaguya I've been waiting for Flandre and Kaguya as playable character since forever. I was hoping ULiL would have them since Mokou's in it but nope.... As for waifus.... er.... not really. I do have a favorite character (it's Mokou) but not waifus. They're all too lovable and I would rather be a part of their family (cliche much). @Palas If you can't choose one, make a harem instead! Quote
Jibril Posted March 22, 2016 Author Posted March 22, 2016 @Palas B-b-b-but Flandre is always in the top 15 in the Touhou popularity polls..... Also, you're saying that those who have faith can have a harem?! Quote
Kaguya Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 I think the Kouma cast gets way more attention than they deserve (ya, basically salty people like them that much, since I dislike the entire cast of that game) People are forgetting Flandre to fawn over Clownpiece instead, lol. Koishi also keeps stealing a good part of her fans, I imagine Continuing the music talk, I'm pretty sure I love Kairo. Quote
Jibril Posted March 23, 2016 Author Posted March 23, 2016 They're all little sisters or little sister type. I mean the amount of Koishi with Flandre fanart pieces on the internet is too damn high! ...I'm stuck on Clownpiece with the pointdevice mode. Thus this song becomes my favorite at the moment now since it describes my hell. Stage 5 boss is just a fairy they say.... It's Cirno level they say.... Quote

In other news, FUCK YOU KAGUYA TOUHOU 8 FINAL B GET Congrats on beating the easiest 6th stage boss there is! I was taking pity on you this time, though. We'll see each other again in Shoot the Bullet, where you'll wish you could kill me 100000000 times for the most BS spellcard in the entire game! Seriously congrats, though. IN gets made fun of for being easy, but most people don't manage to finish it. Quote
Jibril Posted March 25, 2016 Author Posted March 25, 2016 @Palas I'm still stuck with that helix and the rotating moon actually.... FML @Kaguya IN is arguably the hardest for highscorers though and StB + DS is just straight BS games. I love the gameplay mechanic however.... Quote
Jibril Posted April 3, 2016 Author Posted April 3, 2016 @Palas Definitely pales than some of the best fan renditions out there, but then again they did make it for profit too. Yours is pretty good given that you're not a professional artist anyway. Do more renditions for other themes please~ Quote
onorub Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 One thing that i always wondered from the Touhou games: within the story, is this how the power scale works? phantasm bosses > final bosses at full power (lunatic) > extra bosses > final bosses not at full power (hard or lower) > remanining bosses Quote

There's only one phantom boss in the series, and Yukari's power is indeed absurd, but we don't know. For example, Lunarians are shown in canon to be ridiculously powerful when Remilia makes a rocket and goes to the moon. It's further enforced with Junko, when the protagonists wouldn't be able to defeat her at all without a drug Eirin made. On the other hand, it doesn't really matter, since the danmaku they use to solve incidents isn't fighting for real, and it doesn't need to reflect actual powerlevels (Sanae has a spellcard that's basically her throwing rice around, if I remember correctly... Of course it's powerless, but a hit from it would still count as a victory for her, lol), being more of a duel system that lets humans challenge youkai if it comes down to it, according to the descriptions you'll get from the print works. Because of the way danmaku works, the in-game battles don't necessarily reflect strength, in the first place (though they can, and often enough do, probably.) With some characters, it's even messier - Aya is depicted as not using her full power most of the time, for an example. Yuuji, too, fought with the heavy handicap of not letting a single drop of sake spill from her cup and whatnot. It also doesn't mean those powerlevels are consistent in between games. I wouldn't say all 6th stage bosses have consistent powerlevels amongst themselves - extra stage bosses are even worse to qualify, but they're probably stronger than the 6th stage bosses in most cases. If you're asking about difficulty rather than powerlevels, it varies from game to game. Yuyuko's spelllcards are much easier to get through than Clownpiece's, and they aren't even from the same stage, lol. Quote
Jibril Posted April 27, 2016 Author Posted April 27, 2016 What Kaguya said. If you really want to know the power levels of each character, you need to read their official lore from the game and other canon works such as Perfect Memento in Strict Sense, Oriental Sacred Palace, etc. Finding hints and other information. Relying on bosses category won't work either for the fighting game exclusive characters such as Hata no Kokoro or Kasen Ibaraki. For example, Yuyuko is the final boss of PCB yet her ability to, without exception and without permitting any resistance, end the life of any living being, whether it be human or youkai can be said to be completely BROKEN. Necessarily this makes her ridiculously stronger than almost all of the final and extra bosses from other games. Conclusion? The only powerlevel you can safely determined are the scrub bosses such as Cirno, as well as weak canon non-game characters such as Sunny Milk, Luna Child, Star Sapphire, Hieda no Akyuu, Kosuzu Motoori. Pretty much. Though Sunny Milk, Luna Child and Star Sapphire are the bosses of Great Fairy Wars, so I wouldn't call them "canon non-game characters" Quote
Jibril Posted April 28, 2016 Author Posted April 28, 2016 ...Right... I forgot we have a 12.8.... Quote
Kaguya Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 I dislike all of the fairies (seeing Cirno stuff is... Ugh.) but that game was pretty nice, lol. I liked the gimmick of freezing bullets... And Marisa's spellcards were pretty funny. Quote
