Fred the Barber Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 As someone who likes to type titles precisely, I get annoyed every time I find myself typing Little Busters! into a sentence. That, of course, doesn't compare to the horrors of Sound! Euphonium, or the subtleties of distinguishing K-On! vs. K-On!!, but the worst has certainly got to be the punctuation nightmare that is Really? Really!; I mean, really? Quote
Ariurotl Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 You make a Fair;Point, but to be honest, I Really? Really! don't care. Quote
arakura Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 I enjoy punctuation in titles. It's fun and distinguishing. I especially like when the sequel has an extra exclamation point or "next!" Or something like that. Quote

arakura Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 Haha, it's not really worth worrying about! Let them be special snowflakes if they want! Quote

You're advised to limit the use of exclamation marks in your fiction writing, so this sort of blatant overuse/misuse has never been considered a good thing by me. Quote
solidbatman Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 I submit that we change our name from Fuwanovel to Fuwanovel! It certainly adds pzazz LiquidShu, Fred the Barber and Gibberish 3 Quote

Valmore Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 Without the exclamation point, Free! would just be Free. However, it would still be an anime about a bunch of dudes whose parents hate them by giving them all girls names. Quote

Eclipsed Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 It's whatevers for me. If they do something like Dracu-Riot!!!!!!!!!!!!!! though, then we have a problem. Quote
Fred the Barber Posted April 20, 2016 Author Posted April 20, 2016 I just wish they'd come out with K-On!!! already. Quote
arakura Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 I can't tell if actual salt or not... o.o pls someone, I can't handle the suspense! But srsly about that K-On!!!, yo. Do want to see. Quote
Fred the Barber Posted April 21, 2016 Author Posted April 21, 2016 Yeah, I would happily set aside all the fake punctuation-induced salt for K-On!!!. Regarding adding some pizzazz to the site name, I propose either Fuwa? Novel! or Fuwa;Novel. Quote

Polycentric Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 I've never really thought about this, but I suppose the exclamation point usually does add some aspect of excitement or happiness to a title name, while other times it probably doesn't fit the mood of the game*. Quote
tymmur Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 Clearly it makes no sense not to write the title correctly. How am I to know that "Tincle Twinkle Festival" is supposed to be Tincle ★ Twinkle Festival! It's not like those two titles have anything in common once you remove the the non-character letters. Joking aside, what I see as the biggest issue is not reading the stars/explanation marks or anything like that. The biggest problem is computer stupidity. For instance if I ask the browser (the find in browser, not google) to search for the title without the star, it will not find the title, which includes the star and vice versa. Humans should be able to handle a few typos and missing exclamation marks and still figure out what it is supposed to say, and I don't really care for such perfection, particularly if it is about keys not present on the keyboard. Being unable to locate the post I read last week because the computer is bothered by this issue is a fare more severe issue. Quote
ittaku Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 While I get annoyed at the naming aspects on my filesystem, at least exclamation marks mean something... I'm far more annoyed by meaningless apostrophe abuse by Japanese Engrish [sic] titles such as Clover Day's. Darklord Rooke and Fred the Barber 2 Quote
TexasDice Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 At least an exclamation mark is something that I can find on my keyboard whenever I need to post a VN by name. "☆" is the real Hitler. Fiddle, Darklord Rooke, Mr Poltroon and 2 others 5 Quote
Deep Blue Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 The "☆" is because japanese people are obsessed with adding the terms "glitter" "shinny" "twinkle" "sparkle" and all that kind of bullshit related to "キラキラ" kira kira, they probably thing is cute to add it to their titles or something like that.. oh sparkly sparkly kawaiii, no it is not! Fiddle Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 The only punctuation worthy of accompanying an exclamation point is an unnecessarily long phrase enclosed with tildes, appearing in every nukige title. I've been conditioned to have an erection at the sight of squiggly lines. Darklord Rooke and Fred the Barber 2 Quote
atorq Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 I! Don't! Think! They have anything to do! In the middle of a title! That's just stupid?! If it is at the end, I suppose it's fine, not that it really matters, they all have stupid names anyway. Quote
