In my experience, the people who show the most hostility toward 'weeaboos' are people in the West familiar with Japanese culture. Because 'weeaboos' love Japanese culture but aren't familiar with it, those who ARE knowledgeable tend to look down on them. Take for example the amount of Japanese pandering in OELVNs, it's consumers of Japanese media that led the criticism against these games, not the general public itself. The general 'Western' public wouldn't know the difference between a 'weeaboo', an 'otaku', and a general nerd. In fact, the general 'Western' public wouldn't know the term 'weeaboo'.

I therefore find comments about the "West's" attitude to weeboos to be suspect, TBH.

I don't know much about OELVNs, but in my experience, about 60-70% of the time, talk about anime on any YouTube video's comment section and you would be called out as a weeaboo. I know YouTube will always be toxic like that, but for so many people over my many years of browsing experience to just repeat the same obnoxious attitude... yeah, it tends to leave an inevitable distinct impression.

I guess it's a little better in recent years since the populace are more accepting of anime culture these days, but you could still find the occasional jerk floating about using the term as an excuse for anime-hate. I mean, it's the Internet. Is it any surprise people would find it easy to insult others for things they enjoy? It's like the norm of the typical Internet user.

Okay, maybe that's pessimistic of me, but I can't help it. Years of experience around hostile and nasty people on the net built that defense into me.

People who spend all their time commenting on Youtube are people who live in the basement of their parents house, doing nothing else all day but playing games and watching anime. Allow me to go to the Japanese 2chan board and form an opinion about the entirety of the Japanese people from my experience there, because it's pretty much the same thing.

Walk around the street and say the word 'weeaboo' to someone and most likely the response you'll get is a funny expression and a slow backing away.

That statement's a little bit presumptuous, in my opinion, and rather unnecessary. What's wrong with playing games and watching anime all day? And are people really still using the term 'basement' to insult people with social phobia? Isn't it kinda dated, especially when not that many people actually live in the basement, particularly if you're an Asian like me. Not to mention that the insult would ironically serve the opposite effect of making them avoid people even more, playing games and watching anime even more.

Speaking of which, I also find it a bit ironic when I'm called a weeaboo. I mean... Japanese are Asians so, if I'm a weeaboo 'pretending to be Japanese', as the accusation goes, it does sound kinda weird in context. And even if I dislike my own culture, favoring the Japanese culture over the rather dull Chinese one, I don't think there's really any need to call me something. It's not like I'm publicly spreading my detest of my own culture. Well, okay, I am now, but only to make a point. At least I'm not saying that I hate Chinese people, just that I find our culture boring.

Apart from not contributing to society? Nothing at all. It does, however, skew their opinions and perceptions, and it does mean they're not what you consider normal people.

I will say this, the only people who use the term 'weeaboo' are people familiar with anime culture.

I can say with 100% certainty I wasn't commenting about people with 'social phobia'.

It's a stupid insult, imo. Originating from fans of Japanese culture to criticise a select group within that fanbase.

Mhmmm, see, but the problem is, what you were implying indirectly with such a statement is that people with social phobias aren't what you would call 'normal people' since a lot of them fit the description of 'playing games and watching anime all day' (otaku in Japan, for example, are shut-ins who prefer their 'waifu' girlfriends over real people because of social phobia). I don't think that's a very nice thing to say about others... But I digress. That's a topic for another thread.

Actually what I imply is something only I can say, what you infer from that statement is your own business.

Considering the whole point of my argument was that the general Western public don't know the term 'Weeaboo', and 'general' is a synonym of 'normal', I don't believe you need to dig too far to get what I was actually saying.

And considering 'normal' is just another word for what is 'usual', I'd say there are plenty of terrible things you can say about 'normal' people. And I can talk all day on this, so you're welcome to create another thread if you really wish to talk about this topic.

What the hell is OELVNs ?

Had to look it up just now, but it's Original English Language Visual Novels. Basically, visual novels made in English in the first place (see VA-11 Hall-A).

A weeaboo is someone who watches too much anime and thinks that japan is the best thing ever for no real reason other than (but not limited to) anime.

Imagine some dude eating too much tacos and telling everybody how superior mexico culturally to all other countries. Then he puts the word Senior or Seniorita before everybodies name when he addresses them and then goes around saying "Puta Madre!" to everyone, badly incorporating Spanish into his everyday language etc. Doing this he disrespects both his own culture and the mexican culture.

That's a weeaboo; Thread closed.
