How would you introduce animes to your parents ?

I mean, I was thinking earlier, I wouldn't really know how i would do, wich anime I would show them to make them have a better opinion than the basic "childish looking" thing.

 

I'm not that experienced into anime, so what would be your recommandations ?

I mean, you don't have to ask for permission to watch or enjoy a given thing, not even to your parents. Especially if you're over your country's adulthood age.

Plus, there are some things that are personal, i. e. privy to the general public.

Highschool of the Dead, Boku no Pico, Highschool DXD. I think Elfen Lied would be a good addition. If they think those all are childish, I don't know how to help you anymore :/

 

On topic, I agree with Okarin, it is not like your parents need to enjoy it because you do. I tried to introduce some to my family and friends and nobody enjoyed what I suggested.

If you really want to do it, you should first see what your parents like before trying to suggest anything. You could try the mainstream animes before, such as Madoka Magica or Attack on Titan.

Yes but that's not the point, sorry if it wasn't clear.

I was just questionning myself about this, if my mom or my dad would come to me and say like "Show me an anime I would like", what would i show them ? In a positive way, not to be praised or not like "if you don't you get "grounded"", they don't need to enjoy animes, it's just a random thought I had.

The seinen genre is good for adults. Women could enjoy most shoujo.

If your dad is into police thrillers or dystopias, show him Psycho Pass (2 seasons). If he likes Wagnerian material or Dungeons and Dragons, then Record of Lodoss War. Durarara could also be competent. I think that Monster had an anime and it is a very adult story. Anything originally by Naoki Urasawa works.

For your mom I have little material, sorry. Maybe Kimi ga Nozomu Eien? (drama) Or Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora? (OAV, more drama) Key things such as Little Busters, Kanon or Clannad? I always believed most women love drama, but not every time. Sadly I'm very low on trendy shoujo at the moment.

Overall I'd go to the classics: Evangelion, Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop, City Hunter... the blockbusters of the 90s.

Also, Sabi had a good suggestion I think, since my very first anime movie I saw was Laputa, wich my father showed me when I was little, and we went to see Howl's Moving Castle in theater when it came out. Usagi Drop is cute, I found it kind of boring but yeah why not.

 

I'm not convinced by Psycho Pass tho, since I really didn't liked it, but I'll look into the others, since I don't know them.

They're mostly ass-old shows from the golden age of animu... well, I think that blockbusters happen every handful of years, so you just have to wait for more.

I'd guess almost any adult can understand, enjoy and appreciate Wolf Children, as well as most Ghibli films. However, I wouldn't really call those good introductions to anime, as they aren't really in any way connected to the common style and tropes of anime, if there is such a thing. That said, I don't think you'll ever get the average parent to enjoy something like Lucky Star, Madoka Magica or Kill la Kill, no matter how gradually you build up to them.

Basically, just try to show them things that are somehow similar to what they already like.

We're on a comunnity that goes beyond Japan and those supposed tropes. I don't want to go into the whole "Japan is sexist in 2017", but that is one way to start to think about when you use this argument. All around the world we have specific media to specific public, but that doesn't mean that they are not based on stereotypes and prejudice.

How men and women are different for you? We're talking about tastes, not body parts [even that can stir up some controversy]. Your statement is also pretty funny [see how I always use funny ironically?] since you say 7 billion people can be divided in fluffly and manly.

As I said on another thread, I hate to discuss online, so I'll refrain from posting. I highly suggest you look for more info about the topic, though, as it can be enlightening.

I was assuming that the OP's parents are people of enough age to have known very different times when men and women led separate and very different lives. It's just History, not whim.

To be honest i don't know to introduce or teach my family including my parents about my otakuness & i don't know how would i introduce them to anime & what anime i should show them but however if you're asking about my collection then i don't know what anime should i let them borrowed as 1 of the other ways to introduce to anime.

But however i would never introduce them to hentai,hentai stuff or show them my hentai collection so far I'm keeping it secret from my family including my parents that I'm a hentai fan,i love hentai & i love hentai stuff & if you want to include my friends,girls & women then that's fine with me if you want me to & before you ask here is how much do they know about me & my collection.

some of my family & some of my friends knows that I'm a gamer & I'm a Final Fantasy fan/huge fan AKA Final Fantasy nerd but however some of my family & some of my friends either don't know yet that I'm a otaku or how much of a otaku i really am,some of my family & some of my friends don't know yet that I'm a hentai fan,i love hentai & i love hentai stuff unless they check out my accounts including my facebook page/account.

Yup, about Howl's moving Castle, like I said, I watched it when it got out in theaters with my father, so I would too.

 

Plus I don't really care about letting people know about me being an anime/manga/japanese shit enthusiast, it's not like I'm ashamed or whatever. Of course, like I won't show them porn, I won't show them hentai, but that seems pretty obvious.

Hmm... among the shows I have on my shelf at the moment, I would probably show them Another. Pretty cool mystery/ horror show. Tokyo Ghoul would be my second choice. (Well, assuming I hadn't already introduced them to it, which I have.)

 

Anime is pretty different from the TV shows adults in the west usually watch, so it is only natural that they will look at the first few episodes of basically any anime with some scepticism.

If you actually want to introduce your parents to anime, I'd say the best thing to do is to open with why you like anime, and then show an example of something you like. You might not be able to get your parents hooked on anime, but you can at least make them understand a bit more what it is you like about it. That's what I did.

Me and my Dad were watching Sword Art Online together a few weeks back. He didn't understand everything, but he seemed to enjoy it.
