Madara Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 Surely fan-translating a VN from a company that already has partnership with official localization team won't be okay, but do you guys think it'd be fine to fan-translate a VN from their subsidiary/partnership company(which hasn't had any official localization release. only their parent brand) instead? or is it also not allowed? mitchhamilton Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 i mean, technically youre not supposed to be tling anything without the proper permissions from the company period. but, if youre worried about the localization team stepping in then they wont since they dont have the rights to the partnership company. Dergonu Posted February 4, 2018 Posted February 4, 2018 Fan translation is technically never okay. But companies rarely do anything about fan TLs. There are some rare cases where people recieve C&D letters, even if the game does not have an official TL in the works, and other times where people don't get C&D letters, even when the company does have an official release on the way. The chances of being stopped by the company who owns the game does increase when a parent brand has recieved a localization, however, as the company might want to have more of their titles officially TLed. A case in point of this is the Hanasaki Work spring TL, which got stopped because the title might recieve an official TL down the line. TL;dr: it might be okay, it might not. Do it at your own risk. Veshurik Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 I think, only Saga Planets (Visual Arts) can go crazy. Others just don't care (or don't even know about that). Usually companies ignore any letters about EN TL. But Windmill (Happiness, Witch Garden) and Particle (Lilycle Rainbow Stage) says that if there are many people who want their novels in English, then they decide it. Quote
