well, there's a discord...

One thing that has always baffled me is why Discord is more popular than traditional forums. As a medium of communication I much prefer the forum format. Not to mention that information is much better stored and searchable via web browsers when it's on a forum as opposed to a Discord server. There are also certain topics and conversations that work better when you can write out a thought out reply rather than a series of instant messages

I think it's down to a combination of accessibility (it's a smoother experience to use discord tbh) and that people usually mostly want to shoot the shit rather than discuss to begin with.

Discord is simply an accessibility and convenience brain-worm. But conversations there are so fast and mostly shallow that you happen to run through hundreds of them in the span of a single day if you're really engaged. It's highly exhausting, but breeds interaction like nothing else.

I think we can bring back the forums, but it would require creating dozens of open discussion threads worth engaging in. Newly created ones or repurposed older ones. This isn't given yet and for some reason there's something holding us back from creating them. Maybe the idea that it's "weird" to be basically creating "state-run" discussion threads as opposed to have them user-generated.

I have to think how to promote the forum and if it's just going to stay an archive for the last 10 years with the occasional person coming to chat, it's not terrible either. Give the analytics we do see like 10-20 news signups here every day, but the people just don't have incentive to make threads and speak up.

As everywhere, the lurker to active member ratio differs by a huge margin.

I hope we can give the forum some love like we can give to the blog. I really love the place.

What a small but meaninful time-capsule. Since 2018 I did so much, so much changed... but in the end, the question persists: is the forum dead?

I mean, we do have occacional posts... by bots trying to sell stuff. I always report them, but I wonder what's the point?

Fuwa is not dead as most people still use Discord, so isn't it better just to close the forum and keep the Discord and cof the site cof alive?

Edit: still playing the Switch, but sold my first one to buy myself an OLED version. Still a gift from heavens.

People still post, it is just that it is more likely to be people asking about technical issues than anything else.  I don't like to sit on Discord, because it is too hard to keep track of conversations, and I prefer to just skim static posts rather than deal actual real time conversations.  For visits, we still get plenty, because people utilize all the old posts for technical help on VN issues all the time.  A lot of the other sites that had that information are long gone, so a lot of VN-readers treat us like some kind of archive for troubleshooting.

We do still get people asking for recs, but more and more it is stuff I can't get involved in, since I really only played untranslated VNs after the first six months or so.

Incidentally, the amount of bots is probably about ten times what you think.  I prune at least ten for every one you report, because most just put their adlinks in their profiles rather than posting threads nowadays.

Edit: also the ghost bots that post meaningless and seemingly harmless posts that the bot goes back and edits a month or more later to add a link to.  The key for those is that they tend to use real people names for their handles... so newbies, please don't use your real name or something that might be a real name for your handle, because it is automatically suspicious here, lol.
