Corrupted
Welp, that's been long enough I think. Planetarian it is. I'm excited - I haven't played a Key game for a long time. I played a lot of Evenicle while I waited, and ran into some unexpected and disturbing nightmare fuel in that game last night; time to take a break from it for a while! Perfect timing. I'm guessing if I rerun this poll after I finish Planetarian it'll be Ever17 next. I'll be sure to stick Fate Morgana up there next time too. I keep hearing how steam censors stuff and ruins other stuff, so I'm afraid. I already bought it there when it was on sale, though. Nope, the Steam version is full. Just make sure to pick up the version published by Sekai project and not Planetarian HD, which only supports Japanese, German and Chinese, I believe. Corrupted
I just played all of Planetarian in one sitting. My thoughts: Spoiler 1. I can't remember the last time I sobbed like that. My sinuses are sore. 2. Caretaker vibe + robot heroine = perfect for me. 3. It was exactly as long as it needed to be. 4. Why am I wasting my time playing shit like Yandere, Chrono Clock, Kurukuru Fanatic, Nekopara...when stuff like Planetarian exists. 5. Are all Key works this good?! I really just need to play all Key games?! [I played CLANNAD and Little Busters and felt the same way then] 6. It really feels like non-porny VNs are just categorically better than porny ones. It's like as soon as you add a porn scene, it's not gonna be one of the best? 7. Yup playing VNs = the highest experiences of my life. 8. Does she get fixed in the untranslated epilogue?! 9. This is so similar to Lucy, but I wouldn't mind much more just like it. 10. Help me, I'm still crying. This has helped me refine my goals, here. I want VNs that make me do some or all of the following: 1. Make me cry. 2. Make me daw with lovable flirtation. 3. Get me pumped or emotional with awesome soundtracks. I don't want to sacrifice quality for the sake of hentai scenes. I certainly enjoy hentai scenes, but I'd rather have no hentai scenes than bad ones that break my immersion. I think that means I want Nakige - not Nukige, not Moege. I have a preference for robots/AI, loli, yandere/loyalty, jealousy, and imoutos, but if I love a personality of a characther that's all that matters (I'll take Ramius's unattractive fatass from Evenicle any day because she's so fucking precious, appreciative, and loyal). If I need to fap, I'm just going to go to "Professor Dave's Masterbation Station". *Opens it up* (Wait why is there a new scene here that wasn't there before?!) Grisaia really got on my nerves sometimes by dragging on and being too slow, but the more I think back on it the more fondly I remember it. It really was one hell of a complete experience. Well, I don't think I'm going to make another poll so soon - I'm going to start up second place, Ever17, instead. By the time I finish that, then perhaps enough time has passed that I won't feel guilty making another poll thread from scratch. Thank you for putting up with all my spam, ya'lls input is making my life better :>. I think I got a bad attitude about the game because I had my hopes up real high for the sister routes, played them back to back, and was majorly disappointed. Chinami from Hoshimemo set the sister bar up too high. By three routes I'm assuming you mean Anzu, Koko, and the robot, and I'd have to agree. Spoiler Although Anzu's ending made me give a big yawn. Magically remembered him eh. Power of sex eh.
Corrupted
For anyone that wants to read a wall of text and follow along with my Ever17 thought process and enjoy the ride with me (I'm not asking for comments, especially nothing that could possibly spoil me, just sharing my journey) Just finished first playthrough and this is how it went: Spoiler Jeez this is starting off boring and slow. Oh hey the sound track is real nice. Still boring, still slow, characters are pointlessly bubbly or emo. Coco, You, pointlessly happy. Kid pointless emo. Yawn. Oh hey, finally action. Running away while being dragged by a badass cold warrior woman clad in black - finally, an interesting character. Always love the warrior women - Meiya from MLA comes to mind. Ok she's kinda rude, meh, but still the most interesting. So we're trapped here, pretty cool. Moments of kinda boring slice of life, mixed in with super nice action scenes. If I wasn't pushed by this poll to finally read the dang thing, the old graphics and slowness would have prevented me from even getting to the first few action scenes. Sora is an AI! Woo! This means I should probably like her the most. But she's unapproachably mature. This is no teenager robot like usual. Torn between mysterious but rude warrior women and Sora, the almost interesting AI. Nothing to yet make me pick one or the other for sure. Warrior women uses womanly wiles to get me on elevator, kinda dumb. Freaks out and yells at me and cleans my face, kinda disturbing, unstable. I honestly don't know what to make of her, and can't tell if I like her behavior. She's still vastly more interesting than the bubbly best friend type, the pointlessly cheery loli, and the emo shota. Oh ho, Sora shows a cute side and holds her face bashfully when you tell her that oversleeping is cute. Yiiissss Ok, that's fucking precious, we are almost certainly gonna aim for a Sora route now. Still pretty boring between action scenes. Saved warrior woman's life a couple times, kinda thought she might get interesting but not quite yet. She just comes off as "unstable". I see the potential for "respect of a fellow warrior" developing, which is a kinda romance I've always enjoyed. Aha, seems we are going Sora path, doing cutesy stuff like drawing makeup on her and giving somewhat retarded lessons on love. Not bad, although for some reason I'm not 100% into it. Feels hard to connect with her. Her teasing me bouncing around and splitting into pieces was supposed to be cute but I found it kinda creepy, really, and I think that put me off a bit. She doesn't seem to know quite how to connect with us, but she has a cute side and a prank side, and that's something. And...we're on the gondola with warrior woman, who essentially brutalizes and ravages us. Whoa. This is easily the best scene so far in the game. There's so much happening. She's cold, she's angry, she's panicky "don't leave me". She's bashing us and choking us, she's kissing us with blood and tears on her lips, then she's stripping and essentially forcing herself on us. She is so very "Borderline Personality Disorder". The scenes was so intense, and hot in its own way. I felt if I were in that situation I would have let her do what she wanted with me as well, out of fear and exhaustion. I feel the poetic words that indicated you had sex were almost certainly more effective and enjoyable than a genuine hentai scene with a heroine you've had virtually no emotional development with would have been. And...we've cheated on Sora. She traps us in a room and sprays us with water and pretends she's gonna drown us. Ahhhh scary scary, jealous AI woman that's hard to communicate with and read emotionally. Wondered if I was gonna die here. Had a very hard time following what was happening with the two Soras and the threat of memory erasure. A later scene perhaps indicated that she was lying, bluffing, she couldn't erase her memory. Very confusing. I like how the MC is one of those don't think, go rescue someone characters. That's a reason for another character to like him that I can get behind, because I can feel myself wanting to act that same way easily enough. So I can see warrior woman falling for him and believing it. Same with Sora, I guess? Although when we rush back to save Sora at the end it feels somewhat silly and suicidal. "No, don't do it!" she says. "Yes I'm gonna do it" he says. Wasn't particularly moving. I blame the age of the game, either poor translation or just coulda been better dialogue. The MC really doesn't know what he's doing, and in general, I can't follow the computery jargon of the game - I get a really "dated" feeling about computer knowledge from this game, and it makes me roll my eyes heavily when characters solve problems by "hacking" and stuff. So, I definitely kinda wondered what he was expecting to do to save Sora. That said, even though I think language barrier and age of game made me feel a little distant from the plot, as well as Sora coming off more creepy than cute at times, I did feel very satisfied with the "pretending to embrace eachother and drowning together" in the final computer room ending. Now that's a good ending. Now it said "Lifesigns 1" so I bet they survived, but I'm rather glad it didn't go into further epilogue explaining that. Because in this case, I think them dying together is much more meaningful to me than them miraculously surviving. There were a couple things in this plot I really liked - 1. The MC actually "cheated" on the heroine of this path and it caused friction but was forgiven without it being the end of the world. Normally sealing the deal with one's chastity or kissing or whatever is such a holy code that cannot be broken. It's nice to have the impression that both warrior woman and MC have had sex before so it's no big fucking deal, and the AI can actually get over it like it's not the end of the world. Not as much ridiculous focus on losing virginity to one's soulmate as I painfully have to deal with in VNs most of the time. 2. The sex scene with warrior woman in general was amazing - it was a stress fuck. Panicky sex at the end of the world, no need for them to make it deeper or talk about it. I've NEVER seen anything like it in a VN yet, and yet it was way closer to real life sex in my mind than most VN sex. Very raw. The choking and hitting during sex, the dangerous emotional rollarcoaster of the warrior woman, it all hit very close to home with my own experiences of serious relationships with fundamentally unstable kinky women. Also, one of my favorite exercises, just imagine those roles reversed - angry man beats woman against the floor, then kisses her, takes off his clothes and fucks her, while she doesn't verbally or physically protest - so interesting to think about the double standard of how much violence we accept against men without batting an eyelid. 3. I choose to believe they died at the end (and in the MC's case, pointlessly) which makes a damned good tragic ending in my book. Dude had a deadly virus, extremely decompression sickness, and the lifeform remaining could have referred to the mysterious person we never encounter that counted during the kick the can game and splashed in the water mysteriously later, instead of the MC. So, they died, and it was great. The explanation of how a man loves a statue was a super cool foreshadowing to a man loving an AI, I thought, as well as warrior woman talking about how we are concepts instead of bodies instead of people sort of referred to Sora as well as possibly herself. Theorizing: Lemurians? Lemu? Lost continent like Atlantis type thing, and we NEVER got an explanation about it. There's literally Lemurian ruins, so I think it's confirmed to be a lost civilization, but again, no explanation. Warrior woman seems to heal really fast, wishes she could die, and Sora didn't detect her lying when she said she was over 20 - I theorize she's a very old immortal dealing with some sort of living too long complex. She probably pushes people away because she's tired of friends and lovers dying around her with their inferior lifespans, and when she slips up and starts wanting to rely on the MC that's why she's panicking and not wanting him to leave her, like everyone else she outlives. Also she was wearing a Tanuki suit that someone called a Lemur. The lost continent is Lemuria or whatever. Uhhh. So. Is that supposed to be a sneaky connection? She's a Lemurian? She's literally an ancient member of the lost civilization, or a product of their technology, or something? Another unanswered question - when did everyone get infected with bullshit super virus that "coincidentally" is abbreviated TB and shares the symptoms with Tuberculosis? I'm guessing Coco visited her dad down there, brought up the infection to everyone else, it incubated while they were waiting for rescue. Coco was likely infected for the same reason as all the scientists, although infected slightly later then they due to the timing of their visit. Kid is a completely unanswered mystery. We don't know his connection to the place at all. I suspect he's related to the original sabotage of the place - like he was brainwashed into doing something and can't remember. He's still boring as hell and kinda whiny, glad I got to slap him. Coco's connection to the place is her father. She's got the general appeal of all cute lolis, so perhaps if there's a Coco route it'll be cute and enjoyable, but not seeing anything special or interesting about her yet. I laughed at the "is around 14-15 but looks younger". Seems to be a common trope - you take a younger person and say that they look even younger for their age, and push the suspension of disbelief as far as you can get to get a loli. Takeru appears to have no special connection to the place, yet - although I wonder who his friends are that he couldn't find. I bet he'll have a special connection to everyone by the time all paths are played. The dog can magically find stuff. Handy. Maybe Coco and Dog spent a lot of time down there in the research center. I feel like Coco should have brought up its existence to everyone at some point and I wonder why she didn't. I mean, she acts like a stupid kid, but I get the impression she's older, more intelligent and mature than Kid and should be more helpful. So manic though, could be hiding some deep depression and not getting to see her family or something. Her lashing out in loneliness to deface the sculpture was interesting and showed hidden pain. Sora's explanation of Y vs W - seems like it applies literally to the fact that she was seperated from her main computer and thus developed independently, or something, thus making that instance of Sora that fell in love with the MC unique (ignoring the bullshit pseudo science explanations as hard as I can). It also seems to hint at the parallel universe situation that all choose-your-own-adventure style VNs share. This along with the fact that after the credits it asked me to save my data and informed me that I'm in an infinite loop pretty much guarantees that there's "progression'. We're gonna go back in this world several times, do several paths, and something big will change - perhaps the Lemurians technology is causing time to loop, perhaps we'll find an ending where all our paths fit together, where we save this version of Sora and do something simultaneously for all other characters, such as save Coco's father or warrior woman's sanity. The best progression I've ever experience is Little Busters, I do hope to experience something that grand again one day. My final thoughts are that I'm disappointed that I didn't like Sora more, even if she was a blushing cutie at times and the mutual death ending was satisfying. We called her cute once, we called her beautiful once, she talked about shit above our heads, she got jealous, we pushed our hands together and played with makeup. It just wasn't quite enough for me like there should have been a super strong connection with her and the MC - it's like she just fell in love with him quickly and chemically like any normal teenage girl, and didn't feel uniquely AI enough. Definitely needed to be more development of that relationship, it was wasted potential. Perhaps as I play more and see her in routes beyond her own and see how the world progresses or play some after story with her, I'll end up appreciating her as much as I want to. She gets the benefit of the doubt in my heart because I love the robots and AI waifus. I'm curious of trying other things in Sora's path to see if there's a bad/better ending, or see if progression data has changed anything, but most likely I'm just gonna try to go for the only other interesting heroine - ms crazy pants borderline disorder rapey warrior woman. Oh, and we didn't shove her like the game stated, we totally gut punched her when we ran back to visit Sora, it just failed to translate that like it should have. It just makes too much sense - that's our revenge for her punching us and our rejection of her for Sora as well as what was necessary to physically stop her from physically stopping us. Back into the fray once more... Edit: I do take back what I said about Sora in this post. I hadn't had my coffee and beer yet when I finished her route so I was irritated. And now, depending on WHAT route you'll start next, you may begin to start asking questions right from the beginning. From the very beginning, really. And the more you read, the more questions arise. So have fun) Again, depending on route order. But later on the way to true ending you'll have to beat all routes so you won't miss it obviously. I suggest to get every ending. Although you have to get 4 good endings for the true route unlocking. And in the end of the game such events start to happen that they literally blow your mind. Although I was also bored for the entirety of Labrynth's "Yuuji's history section" (while also acknowledging it was necessary to build him up and make a justification for his overpoweredness in Fruit and Eden), and I was also often bored in the first half of Eden. The third person narration style was so snoozy compared to the style of t he first game, and something about knowing that "these events took place in the past" kills an experience for me in general. Not counting Amane's story in Grisaia 1, though, when they flash backed to being trapped in the woods. Despite being a flashback, I think that may have been my favorite part of the entire series and stands alone as an awesome story. Regardless, the thrilling second half of Eden and the after game content redeemed it for me. I'm a sucker for that particular type of ending that the after story provides (intentionally being vague here). In general, I think I take a bit of a Tsundere approach to VNs. I start off cold and judgey and just keep thinking about how I like my favorites more, then I will usually fall in love with it and sing its praises by the time I finish it and realize how it becomes something greater than the sum of its parts by the end. Corrupted
@cro-mag I'm going to be a pussy and not read your spoilered comment yet, even though I'm excited to do so. I just get _really_ paranoid of spoiling stuff and I'm currently on the hype train and will probably play Ever17 straight through until I finish the whole thing some time tomorrow or the day after. Second Ever17 playthrough synopsis: Spoiler There's something about doing something over and over again that creates a familiarity, affection, expectation. What comes to mind right away is how every time I restarted Little Busters and heard the first line "Kyousuke's baaccckkk!" I got more and more adrenaline. The more I hear the exciting shit's-going-down soundtracks in Ever17 the more I get pumped. I reread most of the beginning to get into it more, and noticed more interesting stuff and foreshadowing like I had hoped - one of the first lines Sora says refers to the disease, and "Delta" or something. Also the inscription on a random rock of "Heaven above and below", and the fact that the research institution is referred to as heaven along with the island on the top... There's an early decision between being Takeshi or Kid I think. I theorize that the game splits. Takeshi gets with Sora or Tsukumi, Kid gets with Coco or You. Either that or it comes back to Takeshi, and then he hooks up with one of the younger characters. Funny how it feels weird thinking of the shota hooking up with someone older, but when it comes to the older guy with a loli I don't bat an eye. Thanks for making me a sexist pedophile, Japan. I decided to do Takeshi and aim for "noone" or Tsukumi. I pushed away Sora and seemed to have hurt her feelings. I changed some dialogue with Tsukumi and she ended up calling me a Hypocrite, which was different...then apparently instead of calling me brave, punching me, then rescuing her own hamster, I rescued it myself (Er, Takeshi rescued it, but you know what I mean). So at first I thought I messed up her path, then I thought naw this makes sense, I'm seeing a new CG of her and hamster so surely I did it right. Oookkk so the Sora scenes are missing as expected but there wasn't a lot of additional Tsukumi scenes. Just some sightly different dialogue, with the major change being the gondola scene. Instead of Tsukumi beating up and "raping" Takeshi and getting all BPD, she just talks to him and explains her background. IC. So Ever 17 refers to the fact that she has a virus that makes her immortal, biologically always aged at 17. She still seemed pissed at Takeshi though and it just...didn't go anywhere from there. Takeshi and her avoided eye contact and the game continued like normal...until we get to the very end. Instead of being rescued last minute like we were the first time, we get this dark everybody dies ending. Like whoa. Tsukumi says it was nice being your friend and peaces out, Kid dies in his bed, You freaks the fuck out and blindly crawls over to you and holds your head and lays there next to your covered in blood and dying, and to my surprise reveals that she likes you (like, literally, why? I barely paid attention to her). This upends my theory that she'll end up hooking up with Kid as big sister a bit but whatevs, Kid still has the mystery schoolgirl you only see once. 3 minute countdown, hearing scary sounds of water coming to get us, Tsukumi walking off to be crushed by the water, the screen going to that bizarre red screen with melty faces that is disturbing and mysterious...everybody dies and we get a somewhat different message "Only you are in an infinite loop". Only me? Huh? Intense bad ending! But can't believe there was so little to Tsukumi's path. Somewhat disappointing lack of content, I thought at first. I check the "extras" to get clues from the "shortcut" menu which allows me to jump to days i've completed. ...it doesn't say "Tsukumi's path" anywhere. There's the first few days from Takeru's point of view, a blank position beneath that I assume is Kid's point of view, then the final fews days in Sora's path...then "Sora/Tsukumi bad ending". Whhhaaaaatttttt? Unless it only updates this when you get the good ending, I wasn't even ON Tsukumi's path?! I count the blanks left for clues. There's 4 days left after it branches off to a heroine's path, if it follows the same pattern as Sora's route, and the game ends when the place explodes. there's 20 slots left (with a weird extra one near the beginning). That could be 5 characters, 4 days each. But, since a slot was used for a "bad end" it makes sense that slots will be used for other various bad and good ends, or maybe a final progression kinda thing. So let's say there's should be 4 character's worth of routes left. Which makes 5 heroines total. Sora, Tsukumi, Coco, You...And, I'm thinking it's mostly likely that mysterious girl that kid is looking for, who has her own face icon as an option to choose when saving, that is another path, that is the 5th option. This leaves 4 more slots for who the fuck knows. My expectations are overturned, now I'm damned excited. How did I not even do Tsukumi's path?! Where is this game gonna go? It's definitely got some badass final progression that's gonna explain on this nonsense, and probably has one of the usual, but necessary and cool, meta explanations for why the world resets. My hype level is rising...I love the fact that I had no idea before each major event happened in the common path, and I still have no idea what's going to happen going forward. One more question though...So Tsukumi has a virus that makes you live forever. It's said that she's special, which makes me wonder if the virus doesn't make everyone live forever (did it make that other boy in the research center she was in see the future instead?). Or maybe not everyone survives it? Hell it I know. But what was she thinking when she rapes Takeru in Sora's path? She kissed him with blood on her lips (and had sex with him besides)...Was she deliberately infecting him so he would live forever and stay by her side? Was she having a moment of weakness and didn't care because she needed the companionship and emotional connection at that moment? Why did she seem so desperate in Sora's path, but I couldn't get her to like me when I tried to do her damned path? I want desperate loyal warrior waifu, plz. Am disappoint. Maybe that one choice difference that led to her calling me a hypocrite made all the difference and made me fail the path...but wait, it seems like it was very important to the reason why she told me about her past. Jeez. Guess I'll try to do her path one more time before trying Kid's perspective. Who knows...I might have to do Kid first before I can then do Tsukumi on Takeru. I actually love when games are tricksy like that and give you less linearity than you think (Da Capo 2 and LB had me fooled). If the bad end is called "Sora/Tsukumi" bad end, that means that choosing Takeru's perspective at the start likely leads only to those two heroines (although who knows how You will fit in). Gonna keep playing around from Takeru's perspective, this time with speedy skip on. Hype, hype, getting back in there, I wonder if I actually won't die this time, and I wonder if I'll solve the mystery of the 5-6-7 > 1 lifeform reading nonsense (current guess is it's either immortal girl or missing school girl remaining at the end). Corrupted
Ever17 Playthrough 3: Spoiler Got the good (?) Tsukumi ending and I'm not even fucking sure why. Maybe because I chose to slap kid instead of not slap him. It must have been something arbitrary. Takeru sacrificed himself to save Tsukumi and it was fucking badass. Love when MC dies. Totally think somewhat immortal Tsukumi shoulda been the one to jump out of the sub and float away because she might actually survive it, but oh well. It matches the theme of MC always dying. Also, did dude remember to take Sora's disc out of his pocket before he leaped into the sea? Lol at dog randomly having that disc. I couldn't have known it contained Sora without first playing her path, interestingly enough. Also why did Tsukumi start dying in the "bad end" path? She was limping like her leg wound opened back up. At first I thought that the TB virus was undoing her despite her immortality, but now I have no idea since she seems immune to it. I like that Tsukumi really wanted Takeru to be with her and no longer wanted to die, but I'm irritated in that I can't really understand why she came to like him. Both with Sora and Tsukumi there wasn't enough relationship development to make me happy. I guess...it was the first time anyone paid attention to Sora and spent time with her and made her think of herself as a woman. I guess...MC put his money where his mouth is when it came to valuing life and saved Tsukumi and her hamster and made her think about why she saved Coco, and she came to value his worldview of valuing life and his optimism. I think it's just gonna be the style of this VN - there's only so much devoted to that aspect. The point is the 7 days you spend in the facility before it's destroyed, there's only so much time. I'll play another VN with more flirting another time and feel better about it. Makes me miss CLANNAD where the relationships felt like they were on a nice slow boil. I kinda just want a nice looonngg relationship simulation and fall in love over a long period of time, maybe? Longest one to date, I guess, was CLANNAD's afterstory. Talk about taking it slow, sexually. The other longest enjoyment of a relationship might very well be Evenicle, because the characters hook up, fuck, get married, and then the game continues for another 50 hours with tons of cute scenes. If My Heart Had Wings had this huge year break between when you meet the heroines and when you hook up with them and I thought that was interesting. Anywho, back into the fray! Corrupted
Took a break to watch half of the Kanon anime with a friend. I hope we'll be finishing it together tomorrow. Started slow but then it got real good and felt just like a Key VN. Those faces are even uglier than CLANNAD, though. Ageless Potato People. Ever17 is taking a lot longer than I expected, partly because I'll retry and pick different options and still fail to get a flippin good ending. Spent a lot of time today alt tabbing out while waiting for it to skip around. Gah. Well, it's making the experience bigger and more epic, I guess. I blame that on the age of the game and I forgive it, because it's starting to get really flippin mysterious and I'm getting really into it. I like a lot of the soundtracks but these two really, REALLY roxxors my boxxors: Also, Sora looks more feminine and lovely every time I see her.
