TridentScythe Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 For those who haven't heard yet, the SOPA is an act being pushed by US Congress to stop online piracy. However, that also includes anything fan made material from like fan pages, deviantart, fan made videos ad fanfiction. Please sign the petition to stop this, we need a whole lot by march 19. https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/stop-sopa-2014/q0Vkk0Zr If you already signed the petition, please spread the word. Clephas Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 Why do they keep trying to bring this back? It isn't like it will bring more prosperity to anyone... Quote
TridentScythe Posted March 15, 2014 Author Posted March 15, 2014 Why do they keep trying to bring this back? It isn't like it will bring more prosperity to anyone... Well, to quote the guy who started the petition: "They keep bringing this so that their ineffective congress would look like its doing something" Well, that's how it is, mostly. And some other obscure reasons Quote
Down Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 Why do they keep trying to bring this back? It isn't like it will bring more prosperity to anyone... They push it because if they keep doing it at some point people will get tired of it and it will somehow pass. As for why it exists in the first place, well, lobbying and politics. The goal is probably not immediate profit (although some parts of the culture industry would benefit from it (music)), but a lot of people would like to have an increasingly large control on the internet. Darklord Rooke Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 Online petition? Really? Good luck with that Quote
Stanleys Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 It's like a one tune fiddle with these people. They propose SOPA. Again. And it's gonna fail. Again. And then a year or two form now it's gonna resurface. Again. Quote
Nosebleed Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 Not only are they bringing it back but they're bringing it in a really stupid way. Their plan is to sink any website that shares (not hosts) copyrighted content. Say goodbye to all your anime sites. Say goodbye to user friendly youtube (not like it was very user friendly as of late but with this it will be a dictatorship). Say goodbye to fanart. Say goodbye to your scanlated manga and subbed anime. God these people really don't learn that this is extremly bad for them. Quote
Nosebleed Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 It's not exactly SOPA. It's a bunch of agreements between companies. I read about it here http://flamewarflipsides.deviantart.com/art/SOPA-2014-Voluntary-Agreements-TPP-and-Staydown-439990931 Basically it's another form of SOPA. The impact of it will still be the same though. The basic idea is an agreement between domain hosts and retarded lobbyists to remove all the copyright content from their domains and strip the owners of the domain from advertisement revenue and other things. Not only that but they also want to enforce a new form of DMCA to perma ban these people and make it an actual fellony to post copyrighted content. Meaning you can get jail time for this. It's not an official law, it's a bunch of shadowy agreements. I'd like to say this is not as terrifying as SOPA and as so it will be more difficult to fight but it still creates a lot of impact on the internet. Quote
OriginalRen Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 Or you can all just say who the fuck cares? and move on with your life and continue to enjoy your websites because it is just a huge crock. Quote
