The Most Disappointing VN Route?

Dunno if this has ever been done before, just something I thought of before I go to sleep tonight. Hope I'm not opening Pandora's Box by doing this.

 

Title says it all.

Note that there's a fine line between a "bad" route and a "disappointing" one. Anything that you personally consider a let down will do, though be sure to rack up any spoiler warning as appropriate. I'm gonna share mine because it makes me feel better;

 

Kud's route, Little Busters!

Very, very likable heroine, excellent build up, intriguing story, but... unsatisfying ending.

For me, at least. It's astonishingly exhilarating to witness such a fragile character go through so much complication, and I love the way the game makes me feel helpless. It was genuinely tense and emotional. What sort of spoiled my experience was the way they handled the conclusion. I guess I should've seen it coming since it's Key, but it was still too nonsensical and I was expecting something more down to Earth.

Makina's route in Grisaia.

Because i was promised the best route in the game...

So disapointed. So much...  nothing. But we got "revelations" about yuuji oooOOoooOOooh.

Seriously they could have put they entire trilogy in that route.

Mare's route in Hoshimemo.

By no means do I hate Mare, I loved her character in fact, and it's exactly because I love her that her route disappointed me and I think my biggest issue is that it was so integrated with Yume's route that most part of the route is not really related to Mare herself which made her route feel shorter since you had already read most of it once you can get in her route which in my opinion was a massive downgrade.

It just felt like it had little development related to her and You's relationship  because most of "her route" was Yume's route which was much more properly developed. I wanted to see something like that but for Mare only, not see Mare branching off of Yume's route. I wanted a long route focusing on Mare only instead of having Yume play such a big role.

Did I hate her route? Absolutely not! But did it meet my expectations? No it did not.

I can list a few.

Ryou's route in Clannad, I hate the fact the game treats it as a bad end, when she's much better than Kyou.

Mizuha's route in G-senjou no Maou, for me she's the best girl, but her route felt too incomplete (I hate when there's a future jump).

The polygamy route in Oozora, polygamy is not cool, eventually it would drive Asa and Yoru apart.

Steins;Gate true route, well this is just personal taste, I just think Mayuri in infinitely better than Kurisu.

The 2 crappy routes in Deardrops, I don't even remember their names and I can't be assed to look them up. Riho and Kanade's routes were pretty good, and then you get these 2 routes that are worse than a lot of nukige I've "read".

If you can call it a route, Virtue's Last Reward Quark End. 

Alice stabs herself, yes, but what happens afterwards? Does everyone give in? Do they kill each other? Do they get their heads straight and ally their way to freedom? SO much more could be in that ending.

 

Also You route in Ever17. Quite boring, if you ask me.

If Muv Luv Alternative could be counted as a route, I'd pick that. The last third was screaming wasted potential with each line.

 

If that doesn't count though, probably Aoi's route in HoshiMemo, because that was the only route I've read so far that was downright painful to get through. And I thought her character could get much better, boy how was I wrong... it did the exact opposite. _{And to think I even kinda liked her in some other routes....}

Shitatori in G-sen due to massive change in tone from ch3 (first completed route, oh god.)

 

Shizuru in Rewrite because she's such a moe character, and also pretty cool conceptually. The pacing is terribly off, and the ending decision by Kotarou didn't make sense to me either. It /still/ doesn't after I read some theories on it.

Sure he and Shizuru were weakened by the bond, but they weren't exactly

dying. I'm fairly certain they could have both reached the shelter alive. Instead Kotarou decides to become an tree despite Shizuru wanting to keep him... why? What kind of jackass would honestly do that?

Chihiro route, aka chap 3 in Ef - a fairy tale of the two. I honestly wanted to cut myself reading that route. It has horrible.

I hope I will never need to read a piece of shit vn like that ever again. Honestly the whole novel was like that. But Chihiro route was the worst. I disliked all ofthe characters and almost all of the plot twists and developments you saw a dozen of hours beforehand. I am still sad I didn't stop reading it early on, but I hoped it would be better. Totally failure by me.

 

I am quite pissed off as well right now, but never the less! I still did not enjoy the Ef* >_>

 

I honestly hope the company Minory goes bankrupt so it doesn't produse any more titles *sigh* (My hate is deep yes)

She was initially real annoying but more than that her personality changed way too much in the epilogue and overall was poorly written

 

Ageha and Kotori's routes in KonoSora

first Ageha,she's highly annoying whether its how her route starts or how she acts in the duration of it(accusing MC of cheating...really?) and she never even tells him she likes him in the entire route,i usually like Childhood friends and she seemed nice in the common route but this time i got trolled

 

and Kotori well there is nothing wrong with her route persay just that its really boring to read. Dunno if poorly written or something else but compared to the other routes it felt boring.

 

Cross Channel's ending 'route'(Youko's) Dunno if it can be considered a route but it felt really incomplete and the ending leaves a bad aftertaste :/

 

Every route in Edelweiss cept the teachers seriously this is probably the only game who's FD is better than the original -_-

Margit route in Majikoi S, mostly because i was expecting to see more of her background and some missions of her in the German Military but all i got was a pure fan service route full of H-Scenes (S&M of course with Margit being a pure M.) instead. Even Mon and Kokoro had better routes. Also Miyakos route because it was just　weaker than the other routes in the first Majikoi.

The biggest let down was the part where everything suddenly turned Japanese on me and I had no idea it was only partial.

So far, I gotta say Michiru from Grisaia had the most disappointing route. 

They could have legitimately gone with Borderline Personality Disorder or Multiple Personality Disorder, but

NOOOOOO, she has another girl's soul inside her transplanted heart.

  Love her character, hate the route.

I second this as well. The supernatural part of it felt too out of place, but it didn't bother me that much as to make it most disappointing.

For me, it would probably have to be Yumiko's route from Grisaia. Why read the route when you don't need to do any thinking. It's almost like giving you the whole story on a silver platter.

I'll have to second this. Yumiko's route had much lower quality than the others, and since I did that done last, my expectations where maybe set too high...

The most disappointing route for me was Michiru's route in Grisaia. I really liked her as a character and I could relate to the feelings and reaction to her situation but I feel her route was overall, poorly made compared to the other routes. Yuuji's role in her route also was completely absurd and didn't seem plausible at all (Well, I guess he did do something more outrageous in Sachi's route) However, I did hear that the 2nd Grisaia had a really good route for Michiru so I really am looking forward to that!

Apparently Grisaia no Kajitsu gets mentioned often here. Admittedly, it was a very, very good and well-made visual novel. I suppose it's rather easy for one of its routes to not live up to the quality of the other ones.

Common saying is that Michiru's route in Meikyuu sort of retconned her route in Kajitsu. That would probably make you feel better.

For me, I totally felt like Makina's route was a bad end either way you cut it.  I know the good end isn't technically a bad end; but, it sure felt like one to me.  Just, y'know, not as bad as the bad end.  So, it ended up being very disappointing for me.

I thought Ef was alright. But I really hated the Mizuki chapter.

Let's forget the creepiness of a man in his late 20s romancing a middle schooler. The fact that she went back to him after the sexual assault scene was just mindblowing. Or that you're supposed to sympathize with someone who would choose that method. And honestly, I never really understood why they fell in love which made the age gap and sexual assault aspects seem even more awkward and bizarre. I had some issues with the Yuuko chapter too, though, which is a shame because I kind of liked her sarcastic personality. With the way it handled social issues, it kind of feels like the game was written by Republicans.

You know, in retrospect, I'm not sure I actually liked Ef much after all.
