How can people who can't understand Japanese help or attempt to help?

There are many people out there on this forum who want to help but sadly cant translate and can't hack. What can we do that may help if we really wanted to? Or do we just stand back however sad that may be?

Your title is somewhat misleading.

Every project is different, you should start by looking at what positions the team needs.

You could be an editor or an image editor for example.

And even if that's filled you can always sign up for quality checking or beta testing.

Just ask, no one will bite you.

Depends how you want to help.

 

If it's in a fan-translation and you are a native english speaker you can proof read and edit. You can do image editing too.

 

On the forums you can start/participate in projects, make reviews, make a walkthrough, contribute in making it better somehow.

 

Or you can simply be, take part in or create activities around here to keep it lively, and that's totally cool too.

There has to be something your good at. No one sucks st everything. So once you find that one thing try and incorporate it into something that would benefit the forums. You do not need to know rocket science to be able to help this community.

Although if we do have any rocket scientists out there, we need your help for the upcoming FuwaProbe project (make visual novels popular on other planets)

As people already suggested, you can help doing anything. Even by just giving feedback on projects and stuff you're already helping in a way.

 

I can't translate from JP-EN but I'm in a EN-BR group right now, if you know any other language, maybe you could help like this. There's lots of ways, just give it you best in whatever you do.

I have been wanting to do a Norwegian translation just because I can. But I agree with what you're saying.

You can become Spreadsheet guy, website guy, file structure guy! You can be that guy/girl.

Even a chill lurker in groups IRC channels can become useful in the most random ways.

A point brought up in a conversation with clephas a few days ago in the differences between fan translating VNs and anime is that translating VNs is a lot more solitary without people to chat to. 

 

Chat doesn't directly help the project complete, and may even slow down progress (maybe?), but I think it would decrease fall off rates (wishful thinking probably)

More than likely is just wishful thinking but you have a point I believe.
