Asterisk Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 Like the title said. It's the season of the spooky and scary and I'm down for some seasonal reading. So far the only scary-ish VNs I've read are Higurashi, Umineko, and Kara no Shoujo. Any ideas on what I can add to the list? Quote
Flutterz Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 Saya no Uta is the first thing that comes to mind. Quote
BookwormOtaku Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 Saya no Uta and Divi-dead for what's available in english and if you have a PSP there's the Corpse Party games. Quote
Kaguya Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 Saya no Uta isn't scary, nor does it tries to be. It's dark, but that's it. Higurashi and Umineko also aren't quite scary... There's Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni, made by the same author, which fits halloween more, but still isn't supposed to scare you. Finally, there's Phenomeno, which can scare you if you're not used to horror. It's about as close as you'll get with translated VNs. Aside from Corpse Party, which also fits the deal- you can try those games with a psp emulator if you don't have one. All in all, japanese are pretty bad with horror. Listen to the VN-sensei and go with phenomeno, though. Quote
nohman Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 I'll reiterate what Kaguya said, Phenomeno will probably be your best bet. As for Saya no Uta, it isn't really scary, but (personally) few novels, movies, etc. ever really hit on that string anyway. You might still find it horrifying, but even if you don't, I'd still call it halloweenish. It's grim and a monster story. Fits the bill in my book. Quote
Asterisk Posted October 2, 2014 Author Posted October 2, 2014 Sounds to me like Saya no Uta and Phenomeno are the ones I'll be going with then. I doubt I'll be scared but if I can get that dark, monster-y vibe I'll be satisfied. Thank you everyone. Quote
Asomekastt Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 Gore Screaming Show by Black Cyc. This is getting a TL so look forward to that. But not for halloween...at least not this year Quote
Alucard Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 You might want to give divi dead a shot. Been so many years since I played it no idea how well it held up. These days I think you can play it from your browser Quote
Vargas Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 Also try out the "Higurashi When They Cry" series, there are chapters 1-4, 5,6,7,8 Visual novels. There all translated and did creep me out to the fullest. Here is the wiki for it Quote
Clephas Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 Since it just came out, Killer Queen is a good choice. The series as a whole has a lot to recommend to it for psychological horror, lol. Quote
fun2novel Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 Turn on the new! That's the scariest shit I've seen XD Ok, ok, seriously. Try Divi-Dead, it's pretty old but has a good atmosphere. Phenomeno is very short but good while it lasts. Quote
Heizei_koukousei Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 Supreme Candy was made for Halloween. However, its rather unfortunate that the translator in charge of the project isnt willing to share the progress he's made or seek help to finish the damn thing. What's the point of being so protective about a project if its something thats never going to be finished... Got a hold of the guy on Twitter and says he's still working on it but hasn't updated the blog in almost 6 months, sounds like some BS to me I apologize for my rant, got a bit carried away there Well if you're interested in untranslated games its a good choice for the season. Tay Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 I've got Corpse Party II ready. Curious question to those who played it: would ShiniKiss make for a good Halloween VN? Quote
Flutterz Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 I've got Corpse Party II ready. Curious question to those who played it: would ShiniKiss make for a good Halloween VN? Nope, the shinigami is about as scary as Mare. Quote
Vokoca Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 The first half of Chaos;Head is pretty atmospheric, but that falls apart later on when it heads in a completely different direction. Cross;Channel is also kind of disturbing depending how you look at it, but it's definitely not scary either. From what I've read/played, Corpse Party is your best bet, though those games devolve into a fanservice gorefest the further they get. And thanks to the not so well done 3D in BloodDrive, the scares are nothing but hilarious, unfortunately. Sayonara wo oshiete Quote
Funyarinpa Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 I came here to recommend Killer Queen, was not disappointed. Quote
Alucard Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 Speaking of killer queen. What are the ages of the characters? Had a look at the vn db and the character write ups were nonexistent. I saw one of the tags listed as loli heroine just wanted to see whe what percentage of the content that was since I try and avoid loli content when possible. Though I did hear you can turn ero content off in the latest release. Quote
