Ken-Ohki Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 so im starting my first VN since true love all them years ago i guess my questions are. Is this a good VN to start out with? is it any good? is it even an eroge? Fill me with your mighty knowledge (just no spoilers lol) I Lord and Master of the Nohki Empire will be in your debt Quote
Zakamutt Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 Kanon isn't too bad, but the sprite graphics (and some CGs, god) are old to the point where you might dislike it. If you can get past that, and like high school comedy / tear jerker plotlines then it should be a good read. I certainly recommend reading it at some point. Katawa Shoujo is interesting if you want something a bit more attuned to Western tastes than usual. Fate/Stay Night gets into action pretty quickly and is cool as well if you want that. It really depends on what kind of story you like. Ken-Ohki 1 Quote
Eclipsed Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 M'lord, that will mostly be based on your own preferences What are you looking for in a VN? Comedy? Tragedy? Slice of life? Thriller? I haven't personally read Kanon yet, but since it's a Key novel it probably has elements like group of friends, slice of life, romance, some drama and probably a lil' something to make your eyes water. It does have H-scenes apparently. Ken-Ohki 1 Quote

If that rings any bells ill gladly take suggestions Quote

Ken-Ohki Posted October 4, 2014 Author Posted October 4, 2014 In that case yeah, any Key novel (Kanon, Little Busters!, Clannad, Rewrite) will do for ya i also should have mentioned must be eroge because ive watched most of those as anime already lol Quote
Life Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 Even if you have seen them rewrite doesn't have an anime so that is always an option and most people have agreed that the Little Busters adaptation didn't do too well. Neither of them are eroge though. I'm just going to throw it out there but Grisaia no Kajitsu may also be your thing. Other than that, as you have said, kanon might not be too bad to start off with. Ken-Ohki Posted October 4, 2014 Author Posted October 4, 2014 you guys are awesome thanks for the replies =^ _ ^= i think im going to just try all of the eroge suggestions thus far to be my starters, but any further suggestions will odds are go to my *stuff to download next list* that i have on my desktop now if only i had a windows phone and was able to play these on it lol be alot nicer to just lay on my back in bed and play them *nod nod* anyways thanks all ,Ken-Ohki Lord and Master of the Nohki Empire Quote
Decay Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 I think Rewrite is a solid first VN to read. Kanon is just kind of meh. It's honestly not very good. Quote
Supah Kawaii Weeaboo Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 Please state if you liked True Love mostly for its simulation gameplay. I remember enjoying it, and then waiting years for just one similar simulation game to be released in English. Also, please state if you are interested in visual novels for mobile devices (iOS, Android) or portable game systems. If you are, search this forum and perhaps also Reddit /visualnovels/ for relevant discussions. These days, I'm using my portable devices more and more, and my home systems are collecting dust... Freestyle80 Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 i reckon u might get bored of stuff like rewrite kanon clannad if u read it as ur first cuz they are all too long and get tedious to read perhaps start with something smaller, like G-senjou Quote

Fill me with your mighty knowledge (just no spoilers lol) I Lord and Master of the Nohki Empire will be in your debt Yes Kanon was my first VN but it had some things i didnt like and like: The MC is kind of an asshole except to two heroines so you might dislike him a lot. Most of his choices are being an ass or not being an ass. The Tsundere character is annoying as hell to the point i didnt do her route. The game is packed with drama, some good and some bad. I will admit i did cry in one heroine route. I think the art is still nice, not over the top just a little mundane. Sex scenes are short and VERY few so the VN doesnt lose too much focus because of them. True love is more of a proper game with stadistics and events based on said stadistics, Kanon will be a click until you get a choice. Quote

Although I suggest Rewrite, it's super long. G-Senjou no Maou was one of my first VNs and I ended up enjoying it more than I thought I would. It has a little bit of everything for everyone, which makes it a good introduction to the genre, and isn't overbearingly long. Quote
Decay Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 No, it's just not crazy long. It's average in length. Quote
Zakamutt Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 Kanon isn't actually that long either / that said, Rewrite certainly is on the uber end of the scale so yeah Quote
InvertMouse Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 It depends on whether you care solely about the story, or if you need some bling in your game experiences. Kanon is an old title, after all. The trailer looks like it was made in Power Point . I know that will bother most people before they even read a word of the script. The resolution is probably quite low as well, I would guess. As for the actual story, I find all the Key works to be pretty much the same. Everyone will have a different say on that, of course. Quote
suikashoujo Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 I've played most of Key's titles (except Air, which has been on my list for years after loving the anime, and the spinoff games), and Kanon was the weakest out of all of them. It's a good read if you want to see how they got their start, though, as it does hold a lot of the same themes that they used in later games. Quote
Lewycool Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 Just play one of the key (company) games... But Katawa Shoujo is a really good first pick too Quote
Snowtsuku Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 The only advantage IMO is that you'll play with an old art kind of lowering your standards in terms of VN art. Quote
Zalor Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 Yes, Kanon is a great staring point. Kanon was a revolutionary VN that really helped establish story based Visual Novels. Before Kanon visual novels were mostly just hentai games. There were a few that tried to tell a story before Kanon, but it was really Kanon's success that stopped Visual novels from being exclusively porn games. It disappoints me how most people aren't very enthusiastic about Kanon on these forums as it is not only historically important but honestly quite good. A lot of creativity went into most of the character routes. On top of Kanon having some really imaginative stories, it is really well written. I even wrote a whole a whole literary analysis in which I deconstructed a complicated friendship between two characters. (Link to my analysis is in my signature). In conclusion you should definitely read Kanon. kratoscar2008 1 Quote
Zakamutt Posted October 5, 2014 Posted October 5, 2014 Not sure about your narrative there; I think Kanon is more known for giving the protagonist more of a personality (though arguambly ONE does this somewhat as well). The Nakige formula was already happening by the time as far as I know, though Key certainly did a damn fine job of it in Kanon. Quote
