springning Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Simple question, really; what was the last game that truly impressed you? Quote
suikashoujo Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Probably ef- the latter tale. It's been a long time since a game surprised and "wowed" me that much. The visuals and the plot were both top-notch. It probably wouldn't have surprised me so much if I hadn't been so underwhelmed by the first tale, though. Quote
Amagami Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Umineko no Naku Koro ni, but I haven't finished yet. The mystery plot was really good. Quote
krill Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 vn: cross + channel, non vn game : symphony liberate your music, a shump combined with rhythm game using your own music files, a fun concept and competitive leader boards with online play. Quote
Clephas Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Last non-vn that made me say 'wow'... probably Oblivion when it first came out. Nothing since, certainly. Skyrim was pretty but they didn't improve any on the storytelling (if anything, the storytelling was even more opaque in some ways). Gaming has been pretty weak for the last few years... Quote
CLuBLioN Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Visual Novel: Grisaia no Kajitsu Non vn would be GTA5 Quote
Kaguya Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Obligatory World of Warcraft pun. Seriously speaking, Comyu probably was the last one. This changes for me whenever a good VN is tld, or whenever I play something of my jp list. Quote
Kimanor Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 The last one to make me say wow would have to be Ef, the latter tale. If you've played it, you know why. Spoiler for Ef: Yuuko's backstory isn't something you hear about often, even in stories. Quote
sirjabberwock Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 GTA V for sure, I'm itching to play it on PC already... plot twist: what if WoW made me say wow? springning 1 Quote
Zalor Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 The last VN I read that truly wowed me was Symphonic Rain. While it has quite a slow start, I was truly impressed with the quality of writing when I arrived to the later parts of the story. Symphonic Rain is one of the few VNs I've read that truly knew how to prepare for a plot twist. It is really hard to make a plot twist not seem like an ass-pull, but Symphonic Rain succeeded in doing it correctly. Quote
Funnerific Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 I'll go with Killer Queen. I found the climax of the second episode to be pretty impressive. My biggest "wow" of all time goes to ef though, for reasons mentioned in spoilers above. Quote
Scars Unseen Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 If we aren't talking VNs(because then the answer would be "whatever the last VN I played was"), I'd have to say either Saints Row IV or The Stanley Parable. The first had an enjoyable story, was ridiculously over the top, had one of my new favorite video game antagonists, and just knew how to have fun with itself. The second was The Stanley Parable, and saying anything more about it would be spoiling the experience(there's a free demo on Steam you can check out, though). Quote
Guest Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Portal 2, for being the best game ever created. Quote
joehawks12 Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 hm....well i play dota on an almost daily basis and something almost always happens that makes me say WOW did that just really happen? But if you're talking about a new game, i'd say wasteland 2. i love the post apocalyptic rpgs, and the amount of customization in that game makes for nearly infinite replays. springning 1 Quote
Yatsufusa Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 The most recent game that has made me go "wow" was Telltales:The Wolf Among Us. I was honestly a little bit skeptical as to whether or not it would be as good as TWD, but i was pleasantly surprised. I loved the 80's neo-noir theme and murder mystery's, and now i'm looking forward to the second season. Quote
Monmon Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Biggest WOW i ever had is from Persona 4 golden, i thought it was just a normal remake but when i played it..its just WOW...seriously..WOW. and for more recent i think Fairy fencer F and Walkure Romanze. for FFF i thought it was a generic JRPG from Compile heart, yet somehow i really love the both ending. Cliche? yes amazing? yes. Walkure Romanze is pretty wow for me because i thought its just your everyday moege but somehow with the Jousting and stuff its just good and addicting. Quote
Freestyle80 Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Last game that was awesome for me was Dark Souls ;D Really like these types of games though game was really frustrating but feels really good to clear it springning 1 Quote
TexasDice Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, that game was just so much fun. Not particularly hard or deep, but fun. Quote
Kurisu-Chan Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Sherlock Holmes : Crimes and punishments, a simple, yet extremely beautiful game. Quote
Eclipsed Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 VN: Rewrite Shizuru's end, where Salvation actually occurs and everybody is wiped out except some ~50 people hiding out in an underground shelter. Like they even showed each character saying their final words before they vanished and oh gawd that was heartbreaking. It wowed me that the writers actually went through with this. Non VN: Bioshock Infinite + Burial at Sea DLCs Amagami 1 Quote
Seth Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Probably Dragon´s Dogma. It did quite felt like traveling through a real Fantasy world and the somewhat harder diffilculty (especially if you don´t use something like walkthroughs) made it just better (could have been longer though). Oh yeah, I love this game. I assume you played Dark Arisen as well? It's one of my favorite addons of all time (and ten times harder than post game). Quote
hydro Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 Grisaia. All I had heard going in was that it was a psychological story, naturally I did not expect one of the funniest common routes ever. I read Killer Queen more recently and really liked it, and while I was pleasantly surprised by a few things there was nothing in it that really caught me off guard. springning 1 Quote
