ChaosWraith Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 So it's been 3 months since I last read a VN, I last finished off reading 3 big titles in a row (Comyu -> Rewrite -> Fate/Stay Night) and when I finished Fate I felt a little dejected that I couldn't immediately find any other "big and epic" titles to read next and so many things I wanted desperately to read remained untranslated (Bokuten, the Grisaia sequels, Dracu-Riot and all the Majikoi's to name a few). Here's my VNDB of what I've read so far: https://vndb.org/u50382/list I'm not too sure of what I'm looking for exactly... I'd just really like it to be a "high quality" VN so-to-speak to get back into the swing of things. My all time favorites are: Majikoi, Rewrite, G-Senjou, Comyu, Grisaia, Osanadai, Sharin no Kuni, and Monmusu Quest. I hope that might help a little with recommendations. Thank you. Quote
Mr Poltroon Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 Majikoi is in the process of being fully translated. It'll be most likely finished within the year. Similarly, Fate/Stay Night's sequel, Fate/Hollow Ataraxia is in it's final QC'ing phases, being completely playable even now. This does not include voices, however. I could recommend any one of the Infinity series (Ever17, Never7 and Remember 11) for being widely regarded as a pretty good series. However, Ever17 is considered the best and can be easily played as a standalone. May not have that "High-Quality" feel you seem to be looking for, as it is rather old. Both Higurashi and Umineko have an epic narrative (both in size and plot). Originally they were totally sound novels, which meant the art was sub-par to say the least, but can be easily patched with the redrawn console versions' sprites. Pre-patch available on Fuwanovel for Umineko. You can buy Higurashi, but will need to patch it yourself. If you don't mind the old style, Clannad, Kanon and Air are all great games, with fantastic comedy, romance and drama (aka manly tears). Made by the same people who made Little Busters and Rewrite. If, after arbitrarily deciding these all suck, you still feel the need to get more, I have more games I can personally recommend, like Steins;Gate, Tsukihime and Swan Song. Quote

We're currently having a VN Reading Club to see if people would pick up at least one VN per month. Since you like Rewrite, Grisaia and Comyu, I think you'll enjoy the VN we picked for this month, Ayakashibito. It's a high-quality work... It's the same genres as Comyu, though the graphs aren't as good. Well, if you're interested in it, here's the topic: https://forums.fuwanovel.net/index.php?/topic/7267-ayakashibito-first-impressions-vn-reading-club/ Otherwise, check my 50 VNs list, you'll fine some cool recommendations there. nohman Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 Ever17 missing from your list was the first thing to immediately come to mind since you were bummed you couldn't fiind anything "big and epic." I think that may fit the bill for you. There's Cartagra and Kara no Shoujo, both are detective stories. The protagonists and setting aren't the typical ones you'll find in a visual novel, plus looking at your list it might offer you something different than what you've read. d2b vs Deardrops since you've read both KiraKIra and Deardrops. I'll finally recommend Zanmataisei Demonbane, it's a blend of a lovecraft setting and mechs. Quote
Funyarinpa Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 If you're up to buying a VN and have a DS/3DS, I really recommend 9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors and Virtue's Last Reward. If you have a Vita you can emulate 999(as it's for the DS) and purchase VLR, just make sure you read 999 first. Underrated and underappreciated, even in the world of VN's. Definitely read Steins; Gate. I'd say it is the best sci-fi VN I have read so far for PC. Otherwise, all Infinity series VN's (Ever17, Remember11, Never7 -and 12Riven which is currently being translated- are all great VN's.) If you want something "epic" above all else, Umineko. This VN I think takes over 100 hours to fully read all 8 episodes, and literally took me more than 3 months to read. I personally like Danganronpa but as it is pretty... unique in many regards, it might not be the best VN to "get back to the swing of things". P.S: Nice to see somebody else read Mamankyoushitsu, lol P.P.S: I just realized Ever17's VNDB link is https://vndb.org/v17 Quote
Carronade Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 Symphonic Rain : ) Seconded. Also, Umineko is pretty good if you have the time... and if you can stomach the graphics, and both Hanachirasu and Kikokugai are excellent, with great translations to boot. Quote
