Fred the Barber Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Recently (very recently), I've finished: Isekai No Seikishi Monogatari Working!! Chuunibyou Watamote Mirai Nikki Ichigo 100% and B-Gata H-Kei Of those, The best ones were: Working!! (I really have no faults to find in the anime, it was executed near perfectly, had the underlying story of love and complexes but never compromised on jokes) Mirai Nikki (explained story well, had interesting developments, OVA was an important part of the story, the perfect ending) and (I disappoint myself when I admit this, but) Ichigo 100% (its beauty was not there initially, with the girls falling in love for no reason, but the beauty of it was in their interactions with each other, they just seemed so much more right somehow). Middling were: Isekai No Seikishi Monogatari (relied too much on sex appeal, not enough on story) and Watamote (never got anywhere with the story, MC never changed majorly, even with help. However, the point of the story was simply to make fun of that fact, so it's somewhat forgivable). And the most horrible ones were: Chuunibyou (I make it a point to keep in mind that if you start with a comedic atmosphere, you have to KEEP that atmosphere rather than throw it out when a tiny bit of serious story finally makes it in. The writers did not balance properly, in my opinion) and B-Gata H-Kei ((Yamada=Watamote) girl in that they don't want to change despite wanting to change. I can understand the problem, but if you're so determined, then please just change AT LEAST by the end of the anime! Also, while Watamote was just making fun of the unpopular girl, Yamada's story is about finding love within her mindless ambition, not about poking fun at Yamada's idiocy (that's only the secondary goal). By the end, yes, they do somewhat show them being lovey-dovey, but I get the feeling that nothing has really changed since the beginning, as if I've wasted my time. I don't like that, and I almost never feel that way about anime, so I really hate this one for having such a good base and building it up only to never have it knocked down, and you know that feeling too). Right now, I'm watching: Hayate No Gotoku Kaichou Wa Maid-sama Full Metal Panic! FMP! gets a huge lead because Fumoffu!. I didn't like how they juggled around the normal life comedy and super-serious murder SRT (Super Robot Taisen, not Special Response Team) segments, because they kept showing Chidori wandering soullessly across the beach while Sagara fought off ten guys halfway across the world. Hayate No Gotoku is no masterpiece, but it deserves honorary mention. It's silly, it's weird, it's erratic, but it's funny and it doesn't forget what it is in its essence. Lol Duel Butler VS Combat Butler. Kaichou Wa Maid-sama, I must analyze in greater detail before giving a midpoint review. It's commendable that you've read this far. Thank you for wasting your time on this post, it means a lot to me. Quote
Eclipsed Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Shakugan no Shana II, up to Episode 16 ...crap I'm too lazy to do a misc. thoughts >.> Uhh I like the focus on the characters this time around (compared to S1's 'villain of the week' format). Shana's rivalry with Yoshida-san in particular I think was nicely developed so far. ~~ Episode 18: Oh shit, signs of douche Yuuji emerging. Edit: Phew he got over it relatively quick(?) ~~ I don't think any other villain will be able to top Sabrac >.> the guy just reeks badass Though unfortunately I'm always gonna think of him as 'Dark Kakashi' Quote
Turnip Sensei Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Now at episode 27 in Eureka Seven. I'm liking it more and more. Characters are becoming more fleshed out and the light Eva-style elements are interesting. I'm calling some really weird revelation. And it's so damn sweet all the time, I almost shed a few tears at some points. Quote
SanadaShadow Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Totally agree with your assessment of Working!! (fantastic) and Watamote (middling at best). Couldn't disagree more on Chunibyo Well, Working!! was just that good. It definitely ends with character relationships being relatively the same, but there's still SOME change, and a noticeable amount. Even then, right from the start there was only a single major problem (Codename: INAMI), but as the anime progresses it shows that it is becoming better. It leaves you satisfied, if a little disappointed, at the ending, knowing that it's going to be just fine for them while wanting more. Watamote, no the other hand, had that thing about the main girl wanting to be popular but never actually reaching out to make it happen even though she full well understood that she needed to do something. While there is noticeable change, by the end of the anime, it's played off as her being fine with the way things are. In other words, despite her improving, NOTHING CHANGES. UGH. It left me feeling unsatisfied, but I enjoyed it up until the ending, since the point of the anime was simply making fun of how pitiful she was. Plus, unlike with Working!!, it really didn't feel like she would be fine. I felt bad for her, but I also didn't like her as the MC. As for Chuunibyou, I can understand why some people would like it, but my personal opinion is that it was somewhat lackluster. I'd like to hear your opinion on it, actually. Quote
Nosebleed Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 Wow i'm so burned out on anime, nothing's making me want to watch it. I saw 4 episodes of Spice and Wolf but I'm not feeling up to the task of watching the rest. This really sucks. ~~ Episode 18: Oh shit, signs of douche Yuuji emerging. Edit: Phew he got over it relatively quick(?) ~~ Hue... Quote

You have 500+ anime / 125 days under your belt so I don't blame you for being burned out ~~ I took a sneak peak at S3 Episode 1...it's like 'Uhh is this an April Fool's' People that watched S3 and thought it was a disaster- is it just the, uh, circumstances which bothered you to oblivion and so you couldn't enjoy S3 or does it have other flaws like pacing and whatnot? Ceris Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 The circumstances, and parts of the season straight up contradict things said earlier,in the series. As a standalone, it's not bad, but it just doesn't fit into the feeling Shakugan no Shana set in the first two seasons. Quote

As for Chuunibyou, I can understand why some people would like it, but my personal opinion is that it was somewhat lackluster. I'd like to hear your opinion on it, actually. Working!! has a lot going for it. I didn't especially like Inami at first, but she grew on me pretty fast, and while neither Kyoko nor Todorochi is my favorite, the entire rest of the cast is amazing, especially the whole Takanashi family. Things definitely do progress, but slowly and naturally. I've been avoiding watching Season 2 ever since finishing Season 1, just so I have the constant anticipation of being able to watch it for the first time. Regarding Chunibyo, here's a few scattered thoughts. Gonna put it under spoiler just in case people want to maintain total ignorance, though I'm not going to say anything specific: - I like the KyoAni formula of moe girls with believable emotional issues, the inevitable feels that come from taking big steps towards resolving those issues, and the very sweet romance that usually blossoms as a result. I like this even when it's formulaic. However, Chunibyo both pulled off that formula really well, and did it with a lot of crazy angles (like, say, the chunibyo angle itself) that gave it a unique vibe. This made it more than just another solid KyoAni show (even though that alone would usually be fine by me!). - The chunibyo scenes were really well-used. They heightened the comedy, at times, but they also served to heighten the drama at crucial moments. That was a real surprise for me, since at first blush they really looked just like a gag. - Art and music both seemed really well-executed to me. Regarding the tonal shift, I didn't find it too jarring. They kept a good mix of things, and the OVA afterwards helped return things to the original comedic feel. Personally, I went into the show with no expectations aside from "this should be good" (I avoided reading anything more than one-liner descriptions), so I was actually a bit surprised at the mostly pure comedic focus at first, given the "love" and "delusions" right there in the title (I actually like the English title more than the Japanese title; fite me). So when the focus switched to become a little more dramatic, it actually felt more appropriate to me. Wow i'm so burned out on anime, nothing's making me want to watch it. I saw 4 episodes of Spice and Wolf but I'm not feeling up to the task of watching the rest. This really sucks. Hue... Spice and Wolf gets off to a slow start, for certain, but it sounds like you probably have a larger problem than just the show. Do your best! Quote

Come on, finish the series, even if it's gonna end for you, when an anime's especially very good, it's gonna make you feel better at the end, and (while you will miss it) it's best to just finish it off rather than hold off and eventually forget it. I'm speaking FROM EXPERIENCE! Also, yes, I know you have quite a bit of experience, but still... FINISH 'WORKING!!'! The difference in our viewpoints regarding Chuunibyou was that I went in expecting comedy while you went in expecting drama. That is the real reason why you were more satisfied than I at the ending. ...That sound about right to you? yugioh 5d's YES. YES. JUST YES. Down Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 yep, the first 2 episodes were fucking awesome but then....now it's really bad I'm watching episode 10 right now maybe it will get better again :/ Total Eclipse is a disaster (in several senses: the director fucked up completely the budget and got fired after 2 episodes), sorry. It was good for 2 episodes then went downhill and never recovered. At least you'll get some fights but they're not really good, lol... This picture kinda sum it all up: Quote
SanadaShadow Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 OOOohhhh boy! just a spelling error. it should be Saekano ( Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata) sorry for that And here I was getting worried I was finally going insane... Well, thanks for the info, you helped my sanity quite a bit today. Anyways, a preliminary report of Kaichou Wa Maid-sama: It's a rather middling anime, somewhat above the Watamote level. The first episode is extremely lackluster, as are some of the later episodes. The MC really pisses me off for the first few episodes, but she becomes okay afterwards. For that matter, WHY IS USUI SO DAMN PERFECT?! GUAAAAAH I'M SO JEALOUS! I WISH I WERE YUKIMURA! Actually, no forget that last bit. Anyways, the sanbaka (three idiots) group is so damn likeable now, I feel like a kindred spirit... It'd be nice to join their gang... Anyways, the mains really piss me off, so it's the extras keeping me in the show. After all, seeing such a cliche couple so much ends up being boring, but so far the sides are pretty cool and interesting in their own right (especially the sanbaka, NEVER FORGET THE SANBAKA). Anyways, so far it's slightly worthwhile, so try it out yourself, but forgive the first episode if you can. I'll update it later when I finish. Quote

Yeah I guess there's that too, but still, when there's something I like it makes me want to watch it. Right now I haven't gotten that feeling for a while. Regarding Shana There's several problems 1) The ending to season 2 set itself up to be a conclusion, it felt like it ended there with Yuuji going to Shana, even if only implied but in season 3 they follow it up with a lolzers, jk he's actually disappeard, get 360noscoped which was really meh for a lot of people 2) The whole series basically contradicts what's been done so far by Having Yuuji pretty much be the douchebag and destroying everything because of retarded idealisms 3) The story itself is very convoluted Shakugan no Shana is a big universe, yes, but Season 3 felt like it was trying to add everything into the mixture . Yuuji's character in season 3 is so many tropes at once it's not even funny. And this is not to mention all the background characters doing tons of other stuff. It's just too much at once. 4) Season 3 was basically pointless because the whole conflict could have been solved just by being a normal, rational human being and talking it out. I won't spoil how everything got solved, but it's really stupid after all the bullshit they have gone through. The whole thing felt incredibly forced and for no good reason. Essentially, it felt like they extended the series on purpose. Even though all the stuff in season 3 is in the last light novels, even in the light novels that extension feels completely unecessary. And even if it was necessary, it didn't have to be this clusterfuck of events that felt completely out of place. Abyssal Monkey and Eclipsed 2 Quote

I think the "plot twist" of Yuuji switching to the other side with almost no explanation. ESPECIALLY the last few episodes which is the worst timing to introduce new characters as a climax and conclusion should be happening. Instead they decided to introduce a new character as many times as Shana says Urasai Urasai Urasai through the entire series... But then again meh... Shana is just too damn cute Quote

Obviously, Louise has become the gentleman she always wanted to be. Now she can marry her true love (Siesta) and live happily ever after. I've used too many emotes for today. I'll restrain myself for now. Kaichou Wa Maid-sama has turned into Kimi Ni Todoke. As in, the writer has no idea when to end it, so it keeps going on and on into oblivion. I'll see it through to the end, though! I recently looked through the list of romance anime and manga... It's actually rather depressing how many pure romance selections I actually know and watch... Or rather, it's somewhat amazing how many I recognize easily once I see the name. Something that caught my attention was a particular title named "Watashi Ni XXX Shinasai!"... Is this a coincidence? Has someone seen it before? What is it? Quote

Abyssal Monkey Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 -All completely accurate representation of why S3 was terribad- Honestly, for me, what slaughtered my entire enjoyment of the show was that they basically destroyed Yuuji's character by just giving him a random buff. It felt like it destroyed all the effort he put in to training, and all of a sudden he is effectively god. Like that made me go "Wait... Whaaaatt!?!?!?!?" I also completely agree with that S2 ending statement, and it was the entire reason why I can claim to anybody to just not watch S3 as seen in my warning post Quote
