Leaf Posted June 11, 2016 Posted June 11, 2016 Chaika the Coffin Princess I finished in just 2 days, I liked it until it got to the ending, it felt really rushed and some things were just left in the dark. If they added 2 or 3 more episodes in S2 it coulda been saved from such disappointment. I started going back to CardCaptor Sakura again, almost finished with the season 2, Sakura still manages to be charming to me, so pleased with this show! Quote
Mr Poltroon Posted June 11, 2016 Posted June 11, 2016 Finished Hitsugi no Chaika and its second season. Another fantasy/medieval story I liked. This one felt modern, though, unlike Scrapped Princess. It once again tackled some themes I liked and how happy I was we got the protagonist we did. I can elaborate, but I dislike spoiling things. Now starting Chihayafuru. Took me a while to warm up to it, but I'm ready now. In that respect, it's kind of like Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu. In fact, from the first three episodes alone it seems they may have a few things in common, and include some "feels" in their repertoire. But I don't really know yet. Will have to continue watching. ittaku Posted June 12, 2016 Posted June 12, 2016 Finished Shirobako with my wife. A solid watch and recommend it for anyone into anime since it's all about the anime industry and gives you plenty of insight into what it is almost certainly like. It's also extremely bold to have so many characters. It was a touch on the predictable side and some of the moments where seniors give juniors advice is contrived and intuitive without needing to be expressed but not enough to be annoying. It was worthy of an ultimately satisfying ending tag too. Finished watching Prison School BDs. Totally stupid with excessive fanservice; a degree of stupid that normally would make me cringe yet somehow I enjoyed it and laughed quite a few times. It wasn't great but good for a completely moronic amusing diversion. Quote
Novel21 Posted June 12, 2016 Posted June 12, 2016 I have just start watch season 3 of Sailor Moon Crystal. It's very amazing anime to watch. Quote
jaxter0987 Posted June 12, 2016 Posted June 12, 2016 Finished Amagi Brilliant Park and Haikyu season 1. Amagi was really nice but I wish the final episode wasn't just filler. I would have much preferred they spent more time building up to the climax in episode 12 instead of having a filler episode 13. That aside, I don't know what I expected from Amagi Brilliant Park but I really like what I got anyway. Haikyu is in a similar situation. My friends keep saying that its hype but while I did get excited at a few parts, it wasn't the excitement I was expecting. The way the matches end up proceeding don't lend itself to hype me up. Maybe it was more hype when it was a weekly watch instead of a binge watch. Started Haikyu season 2 against my better judgement even though I know there's going to be a third season of Haikyu. Soulless Watcher Posted June 13, 2016 Posted June 13, 2016 I'm trying to watch AJIN Demi-Human, also known as totally not Tokyo Ghoul, but GOD FUCKING DAMN IT is it pissing me off. Why the fucking hell is everyone on the planet treating Ajin like dangerous animals that need to be contained and experimented on for shits and giggles?!?!? If this took place in any realistic universe the government would pay top dollar to hire them as military superheros and they would be worshiped as celebrities by the public. There is absolutely zero reason for them to be hated, since the only thing that is largely known about them is they are identical to humans.... except they come back to life after they are killed. At least Tokyo Ghoul had the excuse that, you know, they ate people. I can understand why the population would fear and shun them. Quote
ittaku Posted June 13, 2016 Posted June 13, 2016 Rewatching My Love Story with my wife. Goddamn this series was great. I can't seem to wipe the smile off my face while watching it and my wife and I are in tears. I had to go back to my anime listing to make sure I'd given it a high enough rating and sure enough I gave it a 9/10 the first time around. I'm tempted to push it up... Also watching kaichou maid as per my romcom recommendations thread. It's okay as a rather predictable romance. Quote
Mr Poltroon Posted June 13, 2016 Posted June 13, 2016 Finished the first season of Chihayafuru. Hmm... To start with what I loved, the character diversity. Many of the characters in their group seemed like the sort of character and designs that would make them antagonists or secondary/almost extra characters. Not almost primary like they all were. Additionally, there was a surprising variety of characters and play-styles. I could tell the "desk-guy" is especially strong in the "let me play against him 5 times and I can explain his play-style and flaws in detail" department -- he just needs to become better at exploiting the information itself. The Queen has a profound love for the cards, not the syllables, and wastes no movement, hitting the cards only where she needs so they fly off. The traditional clothing girl also doesn't focus on the syllables, but associates meaning to them. This creates a strong defensive play and makes her karuta unpredictable to the opponent. Chihaya is not strategically minded at all, and her karuta is heavily based on her emotions and state. She's able to distinguish first syllables which would normally sound the same when she gets used to the reader and she's fast. When she gets into a "groove", she'll keep on charging on. However, it's easy to break her concentration and spirit. She also at some point learnt to time her movements so as to avoid faults. The Pork guy got overshadowed. We hardly saw any of his games and we only know that he's good, but only up till the lower levels of Class-A. Taichi is a master of concentration and memorisation, and he also has some strategic ability. He just lacks speed willpower for the most part. The master seems like a better version of Chihaya. We also don't know much about Arita (is that his name?); he is fast and can tell what the best plays should be in any given situation. Can't really say much about him. Chihaya's teacher specialises in destroying the oponent's mental state. Chihaya unwittingly manages this with her speed and good sense. Considering this is a game where "speed" is one of the most important aspects, they managed a lot of variety. I didn't like it when we get to the point of "this person is the fastest there is" and then an "even faster person" is introduced, and then a third "fastest person" shows up and that kind of thing. It's kind of unavoidable, but this is mostly a nitpick exclusive to me. I'll actually continue on to the second season. I'm hoping for two things: A conclusion, and new members for the club. I actually hope they either throw the romance aspects out of the window or get them over with. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'd much rather this show had no romance. It somehow feels jarring to me. Down 1 Quote

The manga is still ongoing so you'll have to pray for a 3rd season rather than a conclusion. And believe me what happens after the 2nd season is that shit gets real, so I really want to watch it on screen. Quote
Nosebleed Posted June 13, 2016 Posted June 13, 2016 The romance aspect in Chihayafuru is actually handled fairly well imo, especially after the 2nd season. It feels like it connects the characters together rather than just being there for the sake of it. It never ultimately hurt the spot aspect of it, though. As for a conclusion though, yeah that's not going to happen anytime soon. LiquidShu 1 Quote

Bakuman is great. Really gives you some (albeit over exaggerated) awesome insight on the manga industry in general. It feels very much like a shounen manga, but the journey is really enjoyable imo. And yes, it has a satisfying ending. Arkamondal 1 Quote

LiquidShu Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 Well, I finished Chihayafuru yesterday. Everything about that show was simply amazing. From the smack on the tatami mat to the opening and ending theme songs, anything involving sound and Chihayafuru was sweet love to my ears. Just thinking about it makes me happy! Then when it came to romance, I felt like it was handled more than fairly well. After watching Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu I was looking for a "josei" title, which is how I found Chihayafuru. While the anime unfortunately didn't get to the point where any direct romance occurred, I was able to feel the emotions of Mashima, Oe, Arata, Chihaya, Hanano, and the whole cast. The poems also helped a great deal at getting me to feel more than they were letting on. The art style and animation were superb. I can't say it was on the level of UBW, but it doesn't have to be. Don't really have anything to say more about this category, it was a lot of fun to watch and that's what matters. Now if only karuta was a thing in the US... Side rant - God everything was so damn amazing! Chihaya so cute!!! Fucking love this show so much I need another anime to watch after Chihaya, any recommendations? Fred the Barber 1 Quote

I will never understand why decided to "translate" the title "Working!!" to "Wagnaria!!". It's like, you already have an English title as the original, you don't meed to change anything... but let's make it sound Japanese anyway! (And yes, I'm aware Wagnaria is the place they work at, but that still doesn't make the decision to localize it like that any less silly.) Nonetheless, you definitely should watch Working, it's SOL done properly. By the end you'll wish there was another season. Luckily the mangaka released a one volume sequel, but that still didn't quench my thirst! LiquidShu 1 Quote

LiquidShu Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 Thanks for the recommendation Fred (unfortunately it turns out you are neither a sandbag or a Barber), and thanks for the vote of confidence in his recommendation Nosebleed. Starting Wag- Working!! tonight ~ Quote

Kenshin_sama Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 Finished watching Chihayafuru. Honestly, I kinda have a hard time forming an opinion of it. It's a great show without a doubt; the competitions were engaging, the characters were spot on, and it definitely had some emotional value to go along with it. Although for me personally, it just didn't feel satisfying. I really can't give an objective reason as to why, but the characters put me off for some reason. It could be the genre; I don't see myself as a particular fan of josei. The only one I've watched so far that really stood out to me was Nodame Cantabile. I also watched a couple more episodes of Daily Lives of High School Boys and I kinda decided to drop it. For a pure comedy series, it's definitely funnier than most others I tried, but I really just don't like this format of comedy. I prefer comedies like Binbougami ga and Gintama that set up for the jokes and keep the scenario going for entire episodes rather than scene by scene. But if you enjoy anime like Nichijou and Seitokai Yakuindomo (for the record, I didn't like these either), I would definitely consider watching it. It has its on moments and its off moments, but it did make me laugh a bunch of times. As funny as it was though, the scenario transitions really bogged down the enjoyability for me. Quote
