Beichuuka Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 I have a hard time getting on the Your Name hype train. I mean, it was a fine film, but I just didn't see anything particularly special about it. Quote

Okarin Posted December 13, 2017 Posted December 13, 2017 Steins;Gate. I like the VN better, but the anime satisfies. Besides, what did they do to "Explanation"? Or is it my tablet? Quote

The film is nothing impressive in terms of story or character construction, but it never tried to begin with. Kimi no nawa is almost like a videoclip, really high production value, espectacular direction, amazing OST. It was intendended to give people their dosis of audiovisual orgasms, and at least in my case they did achieve it. Quote
Zidan209 Posted December 15, 2017 Posted December 15, 2017 So, I finished Geass. About the ending, i am satisfied (more or less), there were some details that I'd prefer were different. I'm too lazy to share more of my thoughts, because i would have to filter spoilers. But all in all, a pretty magnificent anime. I kinda wonder if the 3rd season is real Quote
havoc Posted December 31, 2017 Posted December 31, 2017 watched in this corner of the world today. Been a long time since i enjoyed a movie that much. Despite that it can be quite depressing at times i somehow also found it quite a soothing movie. Quote
Fred the Barber Posted January 1, 2018 Posted January 1, 2018 I just finished Restaurant to Another World, which I absolutely adored. It was every bit as solid a feel-good experience as Interviews with Monster Girls was for me earlier this year (quick check: is it still this year? yes, it's still this year, whew). Normally I don't care for such episodic shows (and I would probably be even more likely to be put off by shows where each episode was basically two half-length stories), but this one totally worked for me, perhaps because it actually grew the cast meaningfully in each episode. That's a pretty big contrast to, say, Natsume's Book of Friends or Kino's Journey, where every episode brings in new characters, but then they disappear never to be seen again, which I guess kind of rubs me the wrong way. No "monster of the week" formula here: everything compounds and ties back into previous stories. It shows a lot of care and love for the people on behalf of the creator, and I found the resulting experience really appealing. Of course, it also helps that I just like food shows. But more importantly, I loved aspects like the show's casual approach to character development, such as when Spoiler the dragon waitress who speaks directly into people's minds instead starts actually speaking out loud to people, beginning with her coworkers, after a scene where she reflects on how happy she is to have them in her life. But the show doesn't throw this in your face: it just does it, and it works, and it's lovely. And of course, then they go on to use it to give her even more humanizing moments, like when she keeps talking with her mouth full (which, again, the show never calls attention to, and which makes it all the more intimate and sweet). Heck, I even loved the way they tied things together and explained them, when I was fully expecting (and fine with) that remaining ambiguous. All in all, even though everybody told me it was good even before I started it, this was still an incredibly enjoyable show for me, vastly exceeding my expectations. Plk_Lesiak 1 Quote

(...)Â I liked it too, although I think that it's pretty much dependent on whether you like the theme, for me it was actually getting pretty tiring by the end - it's only that many times you can watch people getting unreasonably excited over a dish. When I look at Food Wars adverts now they look like hell to me, even though I believe the series is in reality just as great as people make it out to be. I just won't be able to stand these over-the-top "foodgasm" sections in any piece of media for a while. I have to admit though that the lore and characters in "Restaurant..." were for the most part great. Every moment that focused on Aletta was pretty much automatically my favorite one, but the rest of the cast didn't fall that far behind. ;]Â Â Quote
ittaku Posted January 1, 2018 Posted January 1, 2018 Strange, Restaurant.. didn't work for me at all. I just got bored of the same plot over and over and gave up about halfway. Quote

The only time I find it interesting now is when it concentrates on the characters and their development. They need to get it on with Erina and Souma sooner rather than later because I'm over the food porn aspect. Quote

Agreed with them needing to start getting Erina and Souma together already, though honestly I'm still in love with the show. It's not so much the food porn as all the passion in the characters and the interplay of the characters that does it for me. That said, I haven't watched season three yet... but it's next on my docket. ittaku 1 Quote
Kenshin_sama Posted January 2, 2018 Posted January 2, 2018 I'm still shipping Souma x Megumi. I don't expect the ship to sail in the end, but I refuse to abandon that ship even if it means the death of me. I should pick the manga back up though. I decided to put it on hold when I caught up to the current chapter, and now I'm about 130 chapters behind, lol. Quote

Man if the anime has too much food porn, I'd hate to try and read the manga. Quote

The food porn aspect is a lot more tame in the manga than it is in the anime. Compare the scene in the anime here to these pages in the manga. Â Yeah, J.C. Staff did go a little nuts on their rendition of the food porn aspect, lol. Quote
Plk_Lesiak Posted January 19, 2018 Posted January 19, 2018 (edited) Last weekend I was feeling pretty down and looked for someone completely mindless to relax with. So I've started watching Trinity Seven and man, what a surprise this turned out to be. I don't even like harems, but the protagonist nullified pretty much all the issues I usually have with the format - he's driven, rather intelligent and above all enjoys the hell out of the situation he ended up in, while never taking advantage of the girls or being an actual creep. The show uses the whole ecchi formula with a lot humour and lightheartedness, doing something similar to Highschool DxD, but much more tasteful and coherent in its storytelling. I like positive surprises. :3 EDIT: BTW, an I the only one thinking that Highschool DxD is heavily overrated? Edited January 19, 2018 by Plk_Lesiak Quote

I dunno, it depends on what you mean by overrated. I don't think many people regard HS DxD as the pinnacle of japanese animation and story telling  You don't judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree. I'm watching Houseki no Kuni, which I totally overlooked during the past season. Really digging it so far. It has the best usage of CGI I've seen. I know, I know, CGI usually sucks, but seriously, give it a chance, it deserves it this time. I can somewhat understand that in regards to the first season, it was something a bit different and genuinely funny, but after that it was mostly pure gibberish with characters and story devolving rather than being developed. ;p That Houseki no Kuni anime, it flew completely below my radar too. Reviews make it look phenomenal though. Edited January 20, 2018 by Plk_Lesiak Thyndd 1 Quote
ittaku Posted January 20, 2018 Posted January 20, 2018 Houseki no kuni was a real gem. Pun fully intended. It made me think 3d is finally coming of age when it looks so good. I think the mistake is mixing 3d with 2d where they just don't blend. Good all round 3d seems to be a very valid way forward. Having said that, it's never about technology but about implementation, and houseki no kuni is just a great original story done exceptionally well. Thyndd, Plk_Lesiak and Mr Poltroon 3 Quote

Actually, I wonder if I even finished one in my life  So I couldn't tell whether HS DxD is good or not within its own genre. I did watch a few episodes a while ago and I remember finding it boring and cringy. I figured that ecchi anime was just not for me, after disliking that and To love ru, both praised as good ecchis. 1 hour ago, Plk_Lesiak said: That Houseki no Kuni anime, it flew completely below my radar too. atorq Posted January 22, 2018 Posted January 22, 2018 Thought I would try out some of that anime like the cool kids. Decided to give Devilman Crybaby a chance, and it exceeded my expectations above and beyond. It was good, not much "horror" though as IMDb suggests, not very uplifting either, which probably would have sat a bit better right now. Quote
