Things like Elfen Lied, Jigoku Shoujo, Madoka Magica, Serial Experiments Lain, Mousou Darinin, etc

(I've watched all of the above)

Basically anime that more often than not touch issues with humans/human mind, usually they tend to involve suffering (mostly mental) and are more often than not set in more depressing/dramatic universes.

If you want it in layman's terms: Mental suffering and mindfuck~

Yayyyy mental suffering and minfuck. Sounds a lot more fun than.... True tears.....

Ehhh Steins;Gate is more of a sci-fi adventure that deals mostly with the issues of time traveling and other scientifical stuff, definitely not what I was looking for with the genre I suggested (though arguably some parts in it deal with the impact of time traveling on the characters and stuff but that's still not the core definition of psychological).

I guess it's kind of 50/50, some sites list it as psychological, others don't, I can't exactly put my finger on it either.

Definitely a 10/10 anime though.

Also, who hasn't watched Steins;Gate already? Shame on you!

*Raises hand*  I do own the VN though, just haven't had time to play it yet.

My review for True Tears, sorry it's kind of long:

Story 6/10

This is an anime about teenagers tackling relationships and stumbling along the way as they figure out how to express their true feelings with their loved ones. Empathy is a recurring theme in this story that summarizes what is wrong with many of the people interacting with each other. They impose upon one another and once caught in this selfish cycle misunderstandings arise. Shinichiro Nakahami, or as I like to call him, "Mr. Oblivious", is the center of attention and yet is unable to properly gauge another girl's feelings. His indecisiveness puts a significant strain on the relationships around him. He's unable to properly tell his family that he does not want to participate in the Miguha festival because he does not want to be compared to his father. He's unable to work harder at his picture book because he's afraid of understanding his own limits. Simply put, he's afraid to face his true feelings head on and as a result wears a feeble facade in his daily life. His inability or unwillingness to look within himself and be honest with those around him leads to the ping-pong scenario, a medley of confrontations that dance around the real issues at hand.

One could say this is also a growing up story. The picture book that Shinichiro works on for the duration of the anime serves to show us that he is not yet ready to fly; to grow up and be genuine with those around him. Through his interactions with Isurugi Noe we see Shinichiro slowly but surely mature. On the other hand, within this frame of control and authenticity the viewer is subjected to frustrating portrayals of Shinichiro and other character's cowardice. It is understandable that these characters were unable to properly say what was in their hearts, but there came a point when I merely wished for them to blurt it out. The resolution of the story is prolonged for the sake of glossing over finer details of these character's relationships. Although it was nice to see Shinichiro finally make a stand on who he loved at the end, there were simply too many detours along the way which prohibited the story from really soaring.

Characters 5/10

Hiromi's tenuous connection to Shinichiro is one founded on a deep-seated trauma. Her fear of loneliness seems to be the driving force behind her love for Shinichiro. Her initial attempts to manipulate and obfuscate the truth are frustrating and only serve to stall the inevitable. One may think that because she lives in the same household as Shinichiro she would make a move on him. Alas, even this advantage is quickly forgotten. Most of their interactions within the household are fleeting and barely serve to captivate the viewer's attention. Hiromi herself knows what she wants, but she is unable to look within herself and declare her true feelings. She becomes jealous of Isurugi Noe when she befriends Shinichiro. I believe she is only jealous of Noe because she can genuinely interact with Shinichiro. Participating in the 'game' that Isurugi Jun has set up only serves to show that for the duration of the show she is still a child, unwilling to set aside formalities in order to properly tell Shinichiro how she feels. I did not feel like I knew Hiromi by the end of the anime. Her stone cold demeanor, possibly a result of her interactions with Shinichiro's mother, is a clear indication that she still has trouble empathizing with those around her. Sadly her character felt like it was putting on an act for the majority of the anime, so it was hard to believe her at the end when she finally made her decision.

Aiko doesn't have much of a foundation to justify her relationship with Junichiro. She only shares brief moments with Shunichiro at the restaurant and outside of it only watches him practicing for the Miguha festival. Her indecisiveness pushes her into a relationship with Shinichiro's friend. Her true feelings are always simmering below the surface. Her desperation to have Shinichiro notice her shows the vast gulf between these characters. They do not truly understand each other and are only reacting to the most superficial of actions. She attempts to confess to Shinichiro and goes so far as to kiss him, but it its too late. Honestly, from the start it was obvious that Shinichito's friend would claim her heart. Her inclusion into the love triangle seemed more of a formality that anything else.

Isurugi Noe's personality may have something to do with the death of her grandmother. A coping mechanism designed to protect against pain and rejection. Her whimsical nature leads to awkward and funny moments which I found enjoyable to watch. Her desire to capture a loved one's tears shows that up to this point she too has been living in a fantasy. She realizes this at the end of the anime when her brother confesses his true feelings to her. She didn't know him, so how could she expect to truly know Shinichiro's heart. Her fascination with Raigomaru leads Shinichiro to work on his picture book, a story about a chicken that learns to fly. If it's not obvious to most viewers, this chicken is actually Shinichiro himself, unable to face his true feelings and fly out into the world. I don't remember many times when Isurugi Noe would willingly take advantage of another person in order to serve her selfish needs. This only served to solidify her place in the story. A fragile person who just wanted to fly and share her true feelings with someone else. Isurugi Noe and her brother came off as genuine characters who understood those around them, at least to a certain extent. The knowing way they glanced at other characters and intervened were an indication of how close they were to finally breaking the dam holding back their true feelings.

Sountrack 7/10

I found that the soundtrack for the most part fit the tone of the anime. The somber violins and the soothing piano tracks were some of the more memorable indications that the characters were trying their best to tug their feelings out and bring them to the surface.

Art-Style 7/10

I'm not a good judge of art so I'll just say that it was pleasing to the eye and properly captured the emotions of the characters very well. I felt grounded in the setting and was able to immerse myself properly into this world because of it.

Enjoyment 6/10

A lot of detours along the way which only served to postpone the inevitable Hiromi/Shinichiro relationship. Frustrating character motivations and decisions made me question what was going on a lot of the time. I enjoyed seeing these characters grow up (although it was at a snail's pace). Relationships weren't as fleshed out as I would have liked, but I enjoyed what was there. As long as one understands that the anime's foundation is one based on a superficial glance at budding relationships, then by all means indulge on this romantic feast.

Overall 7/10

Nothing to cry home about, but a worthy effort indeed. I would recommend it to those who want a realistic portrayal of human relationships. This is a story about people who hide behind their masks because it is easier. They are less vulnerable this way against rejection and condemnation. Do not go into this with high expectations and you should be fine. The romance in this anime is not as in depth as you will like, so just sit back and watch these characters make fools of themselves as they carve their own paths in life, trying their best to tug out their true feelings.

A line from Ep.5 that best sums up this series is, "You know, you need a major empathy adjustment."

Story: 1/10

For me, the story can be summarized into two parts:

1: (Until he starts dating Noe)

 Peter-Griffin.jpg

2.) Until the end:

1c96f3844.png

For the first part, nothing happens.  Literally, NOTHING happens.  I don't think I've ever been more bored in my life.  Anything that did happen was extremely predictable.  For the second half, it was equally boring but since I had grown to hate every character, I hated their actions so much that I just went into a rage.

Characters: 1/10

Why 1 you ask?  Because that's the number of characters with any redeeming qualities on this show.  That character would be Noe, who ends up being the equivalent of an emotional punching-bag for the entire show.  Everyone else just dumps and vents on her, driving her to attempt suicide.  I don't even really like her, but I acknowledge that she alone is a decent human being.   So let's go through everyone who actually matters:

  • Shiori (Shin's mother): Horrible abusive to Hiromi (not that I mind) and jealous for unfounded reasons.
  • Munehiro (Shin's father):  Does nothing to qualm any of the conflict in his house, just sits around doing nothing (aside from back-handing his son, who again, deserves it).
  • Aiko: Here, I'll solve all your problems.  "No, Miyokichi I don't want to go out with you."  Was that really that hard?  But no, you cheat on your boyfriend instead.
  • Shinichiro:  Probably the whiniest protagonist I have ever seen.  Do nothing but sulk, gets into a stupid dating bet (again, just say no kids), and once he actually confesses to a girl, he basically ignores her and treats her like garbage.  Why not just break it off.  Oh right, you're a spineless coward.  You only deserve someone as despicable as yourself (oh that happens).
  • Hiromi:  So much disgust, I can barely put it into words.  Someone acts abusive to you?  Let's say the exact same thing to Noe, good idea!   And you know, let's not ask if you're really Shin's half brother.  No, heavens forbid you actually do something productive to fix your predicament.  There's so much conflict in this house, I hate it.  I mean, I was given the option to move out on my own...but no, I'm not gonn-Hey I'm moving out now K bye.  Noe's gone missing?  Let's not, you know, go look for her.  Nah, instead I'll just tell her to get lost forever.  If I had to go on a date with either Hiromi or the Grinch, I'd take the Grinch easily.

Soundtrack: 3/10

There was music in this show?

Animation: 5/10

Why yes, it was animated......that's about it.

Enjoyment: 0/10

I could keep ranting.  But I think I'll just post this video of cute puppies instead.  It's probably healthier for both of us.

Overall: 2/10

That's the mathematical equivalent.  Overall, I find this anime to be:

So when do we start the third cycle? Seeing as there is little as bad as true tears unless we have to watch two girls one cup for four hours i doubt it will be worse.

Posted

Close enough.

I'll start taking sign up and recommendations for the next normal cycle, which will be Psychological.  I'm thinking sign up till Wednesday.

My recommendation: Selector Infected  I will gladly re-watch this, it was great.  Think Madoka with card games.

Sign me up! Recommend Mawaru Penguindrum. Haven't watched it and I plan too. It has comedy, mystery, drama and psychological in one pack so I'm really curious about it.

I also don't plan on voting unless we have a tie breaker. Seeing as voting would require me to read up on each and therefore giving me some idea to the plot. I find it somehow makes the anime better not knowing what's going on. I also trust you all to pick something goodsee thats how much I didn't like true tears that thing took forever to write.
