Well sometimes people tend to drop it till they reach episode 3. Well i'll recommend it anyway.

Can I also join the Seasonal Cycle, at this point? I'm already watching it and enjoying it.

Yes you can.

Kore wa is not a mahou shoujo anime, why was it put for voting?

It's just a parody anime :vinty:

I don't think it should be eligible since it has nothing to do with the genre requested, it just parodies some stuff off of it.

It's not to say it's bad but i came here to watch a legitimate mahou shoujo show not a random comedy knockoff

I mean, at least there's magical girl transformations and actual magical girls in it.  Just an FYI I'm not participating so my vote doesn't count.  At least it's a better recommendation than Kill la Kill.  :makina:

Let's ask, do people want it out?

Posted

There's no magical girls in kore wa, just a crossdressing guy (because it's a parody and not a legitimate mahou shoujo anime).

As far as absurdity goes it's on the same level of Kill la Kill

While it is funny as a parody, it really doesn't fit with the Mahou Shoujo genre.

I disagree there are multiple mahou shoujo characters in it and the MC does transform it doesn't seem fair to remove it. If people don't want to watch it then it won't be voted up, and really what counts as a mahou shoujo anime just magical girls; kore wa has that, it also has transformations just because the mc isn't a traditional mahou shoujo shouldn't mean that it isn't a part of the genre. besides it`s much better that we watch something that breaks the mold instead of a predictable unoriginal show.

This doesn't break the mold in any way, it's just an average parody using a bunch of random supernatural elements. It doesn't have Magical Girls, it had what they call Masou Shoujo, which is obviously a portmanteau on the word Mahou Shoujo, where girls use chainsaws, the other characters are different magical creatures like zombies, necromancers, vampires, etc.

Again the whole show is just a lump of randomness that hardly can even be considered a Magical Girl anime, you really have to stretch the definition to get there.

Shows that "break the mold" are deconstructions like Madoka Magica, Uta Kata or Nanoha which try new things while still retaining the basic formula we're familiar with. Kore Wa just fools around and is obviously a joke on the many supernatural tropes in anime. Just because one of the tropes it parodies happens to be the Mahou Shoujo genre does not inherently mean the show should be classified as such.

But well whatever people want to watch, i just feel kinda cheated when i see Kore Wa amongst the other legitimate suggestions. I came here to watch a proper Mahou Shoujo, so when i see that's up there it doesn't sit well with me.

Even if it`s a parody of a genre it should still fall into that genre. But like i said before if people don't want to watch it then they won't vote for it. I only put it up there because i personally dislike the mahou shoujo genre, and figured that for other people that didn`t like it they would have something that is still close enough to the genre that it counts but far enough away that it`s still enjoyable.

That's like going into the romance genre and suggesting Sword Art Online because Kirito and Asuna end up dating at one point. :vinty:

Obviously this genre in particular is not for everyone, but suggesting something 80% unrelated to it won't make it any better since in the end you're not watching a proper Mahou Shoujo anime. If you absolutely hate the genre or don't know anything about it it's probably better not to recommend anything.

Well i'll stop ranting here, it's the people's choice after all, just really wanted to give some input before people make a decision.

Let it be noted i don't hate Kore wa or anything, i actually think it's fun, i just would never classify it as a Mahou Shoujo anime.

Personally, I don't draw the lines that perfectly (I'd probably list SAO as romance since it drives a great deal of the plot) and I find anime that do lots of things with many genre instead of focusing purely on one tend to be better, but that's besides the point.

I'll leave this one for the jury to decide.

review for shinsekai yori

Story 7/10

In my opinion the first part of the story was a little bit disappointing and it took me a long time to get through but after they explained some stuff it became a lot easier to watch. I think this is one of those anime that would be better on the rewatch. the score would be higher but having to re watch something for it to be really good is okay if you have the time but if you don't it`s just annoying. slow to start but when it did start it was really good.

Characters 7/10

Most of the characters were really well done and it was interesting to see how they turned out with the time jumps. but then there were some who we didnt learn anything about the only trait that i know about mamaru was that he was wuss. even the tainted cats had more to them then mamaru and they werent really shown in the later half of the show.

soundtrack 9/10

the soundtrack was really great i would have given it full if there were more than 5 or 6 songs

Artstyle 8/10

the art was really good but it did look a little bit pasty

Enjoyment 7/10

I didn't really start enjoying it until episode 13 or 14 but after that it was great.

overall 8/10

I liked it alot more than a though i would and it is worth watching.

and one complaint

why did no one just kill the "fiend" with their cantus sure they would have died but it would be worth the sacrifice. i can understand the attack inhibition not making them want to attack but it seems like they still could if they were defending the selves like the priest did to those human looking queerats he must of thought they were human on some level for the death feedback to kick in so why could he still hurt them.

I would classify it as a romance as well.  Having read the books, the first volume (aka his original manuscript) was all about his relationship with Asuna in SAO.  The second volume was all the side stories where the harem addons get introduced. Volume three and four (second arc/ALO) are back again to being his relationship with his sister and Asuna in a fairly typical melodramatic fashion.

Splitting shows into singular genres as a focus point fairly silly, especially in the current pool where half the shows coming out rely on another genre as a substructure to keep the plot moving.  I think you were trying to say that claiming it as a romance in the dramatic sense, like ToraDora or Your Lie in April, is wrong, which is true, but saying it isn't in the romance genre is wrong.  Are you going to claim that all the romantic comedies coming out aren't romance?

That's me done with my counter argument.  I voted for something I hadn't seen before so it's not like it matters to me either way.

Here is my review for Shinsekai Yori.

Story 10/10

This is an anime about a civilization 1000 years in the future that relies heavily on a totalitarian regime in order to curtail the effects of "Cantus", a manifestation of a person's subconscious, which can simply be called psychokinesis. With the power of Cantus people are able to set things on fire, move objects, alter their environment and some say the strongest Cantus user is even possible of cutting the Earth down the middle. Human have managed to exert control over the world with the help of their powers, subjugating both nature and the creatures around them for maximum efficiency. Alas, all good things must come to an end and it become painfully clear that this New World has only managed to stave off disaster by committing atrocities and hiding away the truth in order to maintain peace and relative comfort. How far will humans go in order preserve their way of life? What happens a group of children learn the truth about their society's brutal past? Are hypnosis and conditioning effective means of quelling the masses and is there a line in the sand which shouldn't be crossed in order to protect the world? These and other thought provoking questions are poised throughout this complex story. When you peel back one layer, you find another piece of the puzzle staring right back at you, daring you to prod and poke the sleeping beast guarding the truth.

Characters 9/10

The anime follows a group of four children who on a summer trip find a mysterious library in the shape of a strange creature resembling a slug. After subduing it they begin to question it, uncovering the horrifying secrets which their society had been keeping in order to avoid mass hysteria and confusion. The characters in this anime are very human and express a mix of emotions quite fitting to the perilous situations they face. Saki is a calm and collected girl who is ready to bear the burden of responsibility and adapt when given the chance. Mamoru is an innocent individual who is more prone to extreme outbursts and isn't able to adapt as well to the truth as the rest of his peers. Shun is natural genius with a keen eye for what's important and is also the one out of the group of friends who manages to uncover the most about the conditions crippling their community. Satoru always looks out for his friends and fools around a lot, though he become quite dependable as the show progresses. And finally, Maria seems to be the moral compass of the group always ready to lend a hand to anyone who needs it. Their motivations are clear and they act deliberately in a world that has turned upside down. We see them grow throughout the show and I honestly cared for each and everyone one of them. Yes, even whiny Mamoru, who I honestly wanted to slap every now and then.

Soundtrack 10/10

The soundtrack is quite haunting and beautiful. It clearly captures the tone of the show and manages to unnerve you at times when you least expect it. The ED song for the first half of the show has become one of my favorite anime songs. It's lyrics are both somber and reflective of what the world has done to these characters. The soundtrack really manages to captivate the viewer and immerse them even deeper into the world that the characters inhabit.

Art-Style 8/10

I'm not really good at judging art but I will say that it truly felt like the world was brought to life from its adaptation. The colors are rich and vibrant at times and reflect the passing seasons pretty well. The scenery can be lush, barren, and even rugged at times. I felt it was visually pleasing while at the same doing justice to all the flora and creatures that inhabited this strange world. The animation can get a bit clunky at times. The characters will move in odd ways and their facial expressions will not always match with the tone of the scene, but overall it was a pleasure to watch and didn't bring too much bad attention to itself.

Enjoyment 10/10

Though the ride is a bit bumpy in the beginning because of the world building and all the information the viewer needs to digest I feel that once you cross this hurdle you are in for an amazing anime that doesn't pull punches and manages to create a fantastic story with all of the elements at its disposal. Of course, it's understandable that if you can't take in the info dumps at the beginning or become immersed in the world after the first few episodes then there your enjoyment will surely plummet. Seeing these characters grow and tackle this world head on was a great experience and made me question what I would do in a similar situation. There is a lot of depth to this show and I found myself learning new things and paying attention to different details on my second watch. I would probably watch it again because I just can't get enough of this world and all of its inhabitants.

Overall 10/10

Would watch again! We've got a medley of themes here that are beautifully woven together to create a story about a society constantly on the brink of destruction. You will question morality, regimes and other philosophical issues while watching this anime. You will be amazed at the diversity and complexity of a world with characters that react like genuine humans when confronting an overwhelming truth. A fantastic story of survival where choices matter and the stakes are as high as your imagination is willing to take them.

Okay SAO was a bad example since it uses romance as a big plot device, that's my bad, though it still doesn't make for half of the events in the show, it's just used as a shitty excuse for the actions.

I'm not trying to give shows a single genre, I know and aknowledge shows can have different genres.

But as I've tried to explain before, Kore wa Zombie desu ka does not, at any point, feature what anyone would consider a Magical Girl. It has its own definition of "Magical Girl" with the "Masou Shoujo", which is a parody of the genre, which still doesn't make for 1/5 of the entire show. And even if it did, it's not even a Magical girl it's a crossdressing guy.

When you finish Kore wa Zombie desu ka, the last thing you'll ever think is "that was a nice Magical Girl anime", and that's my whole point.

I want people to experience new genres, even ones they're not comfortable with, and I thought Magical Girl was a great example of a genre most people aren't used to, but if Kore wa ends up getting picked there's no freaking point because Kore wa doesn't showcase anything of what the Magical Girl genre is all about, so all you're doing here is voting for a primarly fantasy slapstick comedy show which just so happens to parody, among many genres, Magical Girls.

I could maybe make an excuse it if the parody was somewhat meaningful to the genre, something like Moetan perhaps. Yeah it's a pretty meh anime but it tries to reach a wider audience by retaining the Magical Girl formula while using lots of fanservice. It still doesn't showcase what the genre is about the best (proper Magical Girls don't show their panties!), but at least when you finish watching it you'll think it was about Magical Girls, unlike what will happen when you finish watching Kore wa Zombie desu ka.

And there's plenty of shows that break out of the box of the Magical Girl genre, so even if you don't like the classics, you can find some gems, a great example is Madoka Magica. Yeah it's mainstream, yeah most people have seen it, but it's definitely not a typical Magical Girl anime. But while it's not typical, it still uses the trope as a big plot device and it takes itself seriously when doing it. When you watch Madoka, you'll see a whole diffrenet side to the Magical Girl genre, but you'll still be watching a Magical Girl show in the end and that's what's really important here.

Kore wa zombie desu ka is nothing new, it's just a rehashed parody formula that tries showcasing different fantasy tropes interacting together, it's in no way, shape, or form a proper Magical Girl show.

If people want to go for safety and not try new genres/formulas, be my guest, I'm just really disappointed it turned out that way and kind of feel like it defeated the whole purpose of a main genre getting picked, hence why I'm upset, because I signed up wanting to watch a proper Magical Girl show.
