Tay Posted January 21, 2015 Author Posted January 21, 2015 Alright, well, I'm seeing a lot of agreement. I think that's actually pretty cool and interesting, but now I think we should dig in a bit deeper to a point raised by a couple of you. I'm clearly interested in sharing VNs (Exhibit A: Fuwanovel), and since it appears much of the licensed VN gameworld is moving towards Steam releases which don't allow H content, I'm hesitant to believe this toggle would help much at all in terms of distribution. Note: Don't get me wrong, I'm all for this hypothetical toggle, but I'm curious to know how you think this would affect things when rubber hits the road. Do you think having this toggle would actually make you or anyone feel more comfortable sharing VNs with friends? Do you think it would make much of a difference beyond personal preference? And here you are, Mr. Zalor. https://forums.fuwanovel.net/index.php?/topic/8273-now-polling-tays-hatemail-grab-bag/ Quote
Zakamutt Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 Well, the move toward separate releases is a thing in official localization; the toggle is more a feature of fan translations for the most part, though sometimes it's more of a non-ero patch. I'd be more comfy sharing something that had a toggle or no ero with people, but honestly I haven't tried all that much. Quote
Monmon Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 I can count with my fingers for H-scene that i read when i`m readin a vn(Japanese vns included). However tbh i still prefer vn 18+ and i dont know why, but that doesnt mean i`ll rage quit when vn that i play is all ages, take https://vndb.org/v232 i enjoyed it a lot even though the patch is for all-ages(i havent tried the 18+ though). However somehow after i finished the whole game, usually i take my time to re-read the H-scene again ofc its for science. So yeah even if vn got H-scene option, i will not use it however maybe i`ll use it when i play the game in public place(University and library not included). Quote
Lambda Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 Do you think having this toggle would actually make you or anyone feel more comfortable sharing VNs with friends? Do you think it would make much of a difference beyond personal preference? I don't have cool opinions on the first topic, just that toggles are gr9. It would make me feel more comfortable sharing the fact that I actually like VNs with my friends, so that's a step. And definitely makes me feel more inclined to ask people if they wanna read something/recommend something. Because when you're first starting, the porn is either majorly off-putting or a major draw and honestly, for people not sufficiently into arguing who the best waifu is, it's mainly off-putting. Quote
Ezeefreak Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 I would prefer something like that and in the most cases I would turn them off. It's not that I had a 360 in my life or something like that ... I don't hate the fact of the characters having sex or displaying that. But in the most of the times I think the way of displaying that it simply awkward. Another aspect is that I feel like the personality of the heroine and/or the protagonists totally change in these scenes and sometimes that ruin my impression of them. For me it is enough if I know they now start their nasty desire and that they are now finish. The rest I can leave to my imagination. But there are also games where I would not turn them off because it's just the essence of the game ... *cough* NekoPara *cough* ... And that also don't have to be a bad thing... Quote
Andreas Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 Would skip if option was available, but have never done it so far as I am afraid to miss something important plotwise( Never happened yet though ). I remember sitting in class reading Katawa Shoujo. I had disabled the H-scenes(for obvious reasons). When the H-scene was over, Emi's sprite was shown naked. In panic I shut the computer's screen making a large sound, and everyone turned towards me . In short never trust disable H-content buttons. They are evil . Could be a bug though as I disabled them right before the H-scene. I also recommended some visual novels to a friend, and he said "My family think I am wierd enough watching anime, what would they think if they found out I read japanese 2D porn. I won't try it out. I'm sorry." Eclipsed and TexasDice 2 Quote

Flutterz Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 As much as I've gotten used to the [acronym:Lowering the screen and holding *Down* control]Down method, I'd love it if I could make it so that there was literally no chance of someone peeking at my screen and seeing porn. I never understood why KS didn't make it so that naked sprites were disabled as well. It's almost definitely not due to some technical limitations, I know they modified the ren'py engine quite a bit to make sure it did what they wanted it to do. Quote
TexasDice Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 Do you think having this toggle would actually make you or anyone feel more comfortable sharing VNs with friends? Personally, no. My friends hate anything close to anime. And reading. And thinking. I hate my friends. A lot. But on a global scale? Yes, definitely. I'm amused by this little life lesson. 7/10 I never understood why KS didn't make it so that naked sprites were disabled as well. It's almost definitely not due to some technical limitations, I know they modified the ren'py engine quite a bit to make sure it did what they wanted it to do. I think nobody cares enough to spend time on fixing that, to be honest. Quote
Chewy Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 Fine with the option just never toggle off Quote
Kosakyun Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 A toggle would be great. I honestly prefer eroges to have 18+ content. I don't know. I just feel satisfied collecting them all. That's my brand of autism, I guess. Oh, I wouldn't really use it, to say the least. But it would be a great tool in raking in the people. Quote
hydro Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 More choice is always a good thing. People being bothered by an optional feature is silly. The video game equivalent is pretty common, especially in sequels. If an easier difficulty or something else that helps casuals and newcomers enjoy the game, it's often blasted by the "hardcore fans". Even if it's completely optional and they can still play on a higher difficulty/without a handicap. This is a little different of course, but the concept is the same. I'd probably use it occasionally. I'm bored by almost all H-scenes, but I usually still feel compelled to skim though them at least. Quote
Tawm Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 It'd be a win-win for everyone. Surely it would save me a few seconds of pressing the skip button. Quote
SilverLi Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 A toggle is a great idea. But the problem is Steam (or any western platform) at the moment. Somehow a company have to argue with Steam about this or it wont matter except in fan translations. And I see Steam bitching about this as usual. We have to change the view of visual novels in the core. If Steam somehow started to allow 18+ releases it would be great and toggles in the game would be perfect. But at the moment it wont happen. This is the problem we face today and have to deal with. How can we change the western scene to allow this? We probably have to shake the cores of the American culture. Easier said than done. Quote
Alucard Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 I'd like the ability to turn off h scenes for specific characters in games Quote
TexasDice Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 I'd like the ability to turn off h scenes for specific characters in games Save -> turn off -> load? Quote
Vokoca Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 If anything, I would just feel paranoid and worried that I was missing something. Not necessarily even the h-CGs, but just the story details that mgiht've (or might've not) occurred in the h-content. Quote
Snowtsuku Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 I usually skip the H scenes since I'm not fond of them but I think that there are stories where not having sex feels kind of off. I'd like to have an option but instead of fully removing them, I'd like to see a scene where it is implied that it was done. Quote
Yeah Way Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 I personally like H-scenes for obvious reasons, but that doesn't mean other people shouldn't have the option to skip them. :/ Quote
Suzu Fanatic Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 I think it's all about circumstance, and the type of VN; I'm all for the derpy "oniisama pump my ***** full of your ****-**** until I'm pregnant!" porn-fluff when it's a nukige. After all, you buy it/download it knowing (normally) full well what you are getting yourself into. Story-driven VNs, it's alittle more complicated... I personally prefer a more emotional/connected hscene, if it is to have one at all. I don't think they should be removed - as sexuality is just as important in a relationship as anything else - but overplaying that hand can just lead to /facepalms. I think EF did them right, and even one or two routes in Katawa. As hot as some scenes are (and I like alot of them in the same base fashion as anyone with a pulse and apprication of 2d), It can come across as excessive, a obvious tool thrown in to cater to the porn-hungry. Like I said, it's a complcated issue - the "good" VNs really don't need hscenes to stay "good" (1st time I read FSN, I had completely forgotton it was a hentai VN until the first one started lol). But at the same time, they woulden't be the same without them~ Even Clannad - which I loved with all my heart, somehow felt "off" by not having hscenes, even though it does "not" need them. Perhaps some of us are just conditioned from all the blatant sexualization in anime/VNs, to expect it~ Kosakyun 1 Quote
atorq Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 I like H-scenes very much, while they might not always be necessary for the story I generally don't play VNs without H-scenes. If there is porn to be had i want it. It makes me sad to think that VNs are censored just to be sold on a platform that should not be limited. A toggle might be good but it's neither something i care about. Quote
Kurisu-Chan Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 It's as useful as being able to toggle off Motion Blur in Videogames (the most shittiest invention ever) So yes, being able to toggle off H-scenes, especially when they have no plot or fetish you don't like (who said Ayakashibito?) Because let's face it, even if some wants H-scenes, i'm not sure everyone want to see Golden Shower/Loli Sex(really not), so giving this ability is the best thing eve. Quote
Funyarinpa Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 Outraged. MUH PORN! #HentaiGate (inb4 people start a hate campaign against Tay) I probably wouldn't turn them off, even if it meant my peril. I still haven't learned my lesson after Killer Queen. *shudder* That being said, the toggle is a damn good thing of course. Quote
