arakura Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 So I've been thinking of buying several Ghibli films from amazon and I have the choice of getting them in Blu-ray or standard dvd. My understanding of Blu-ray was that the disc could hold more data and thus the video and audio could be higher quality. So my question is this: how does that affect an older film (say, Porco Rosso). Does it improve the quality of the movie? Does it matter? I guess the benefit of dvd would be that the cover art isnt painted over with ugly blue and that you can play it on your computer with a dvd drive. And they are generally a bit cheaper. Any thoughts? Nosebleed Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 In this case it's probably just upscaling differences. The blu-ray release probably has a higher resolution (or at least an upscaled version of the DVD version), thus higher image quality. Quote

The reason I bring up older movies specifically is because I'm not sure how they just make more pixels appear. Is the original movie in hgher detail than the dvd format available at time of release was capable of holding and so the re-release is just more true to the original? Otherwise I don't understand how you would upscale something. The pixels wouldnt know what colors to be! Would they? Quote
Decay Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Depending on how the original masters are created/maintained, yes, they can be a higher resolution than the 480p video offered on DVDs. Often with older video, they'll go back to the source material and remaster it. Every once in a while some company just upscales an existing 480p video to 720/1080 and it's always a worthless endeavor. Quote
Kendjin Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 You need to consider that the raw edit of the movie is much larger than a DVD. O So less Compression will happen. Doing interpolation before putting it to disk also allows for a much better upscale. And you tend to find the same happens to audio. Quote
Down Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Afaik Ghibli movies were filmed on 35 mm so using those masters for bluray allows for vast amounts of details and very high resolution. And blurays have very high bitrates, compared with DVDs. It will be significantly better than simple DVDs, even on a computer screen (if you have a big TV than it's basically porn). For Ghibli movies I do think it's totally worth it. Quote
arakura Posted February 22, 2015 Author Posted February 22, 2015 Alright, thanks for the advice. When I talked with my brother we had been leaning towards what kendjin and others were saying, but it's nice to be sure. Quote
kyrt Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 Seems I might have been a bit late but if you go to http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Porco-Rosso-Blu-ray/45666/ you should be able to look at some reviews people have done comparing the blu-ray to dvd versions and this might help you decide which one seems like a good bet. arakura 1 Quote
