Nimbus Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 One of my favourite TV shows of all time is QI. I love it so much I actually bought both versions of "The QI Book of General Ignorance". So I thought I'd share some of these quite interesting facts here on the forums because I have nothing better to do with my life. I'll add a new fun fact every couple of days so feel free to add your own in between. Get ready to nerd it out! When was the last ice age? We're still in it. An Ice Age is defined as a period where there is ice at the poles. We are currently in the "Interglacial Period" which is NOT a period between ice ages, simply a period when the ice is receding due to warmer temperatures. Quote
Mr Poltroon Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 I did think it was rather chilly yesterday... Good to know. Quote
crunchytaco Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Its like summer here where I live. Havent had a winter for the last two years. Next, why is blending fruits bad for you compared to eating it whole? Quote
havoc Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 its hasn been chilly out here, but it sure has been wet recently. and stuff like that is always fun to know Quote
Kosakyun Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Haven't seen snow. GG. I wonder what kind of inconveniences snow provides. Quote

kyrt Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 I rather enjoyed QI although the episode I remember the most is Episode 3 Eating What were corn flakes originally used for? Answer: Discourage Masturbation. fun little trivia: If you eat nothing but rabbit, you would die of malnutrition, because rabbit meat contains very little oil and therefore by eating only rabbit, your body would run out of other nutrients. This is commonly called rabbit starvation or protein poisoning. Quote

Mr. Meogii Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 At least share something interesting, like how if you lose the ability to shit after a few days your shit slowly gets into your bloodstream and slowly poisons you, killing you painfully. Quote

Mr. Meogii Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 I actually knew that one. Thank you obligatory geology class. Here's a fun one, if you're not a native African you likely have 1-4% Neanderthal DNA. Quote

Stray Cat Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Just to elaborate on this Indigenous sub-Saharan Africans have no Neanderthal DNA because their ancestors did not migrate through Eurasia. Source: https://genographic.nationalgeographic.com/neanderthal/ I guess I meant that to be implied. And continuing on topic, here's a procedure you never want to have: Fecal microbiota transplantation or FMT is the transfer of 200-300 grams of fecal material containing bacteria and natural antibacterials from a healthy individual into a diseased recipient. Nasty. Here's one: If the tracks on a typical compact disc ran in a straight line, they would travel for about three miles. Quote
Mr. Meogii Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Did you know that the Universe is expanding? Yes the Universe is expanding. The cause of it is actually called dark energy. Now nothing is know about this phenominon as much as there is to be known. But What is certain is that is that Dark energy constitutes about 68% of the Universe. And all all the things we see on on earth and consider normal matter only consists up to 5% of the Universe. Quote

I feel enlightened and I'll be sure to read more about this later. Do you mind referring a good article to me? The easiest thingy to read would be wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_energy You can also read about Dark Matter. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_matter If you hate wikipedia, you can read these as well. http://science.nasa.gov/astrophysics/focus-areas/what-is-dark-energy/ That one has updates about the topic from 2014 as well. Here's another one from berkeley. Quite simple, but okay. http://astro.berkeley.edu/~mwhite/darkmatter/dm.html CERN also has an article on it. http://home.web.cern.ch/about/physics/dark-matter Of course, all of these are on the first page of google. They're pretty easy to find. They mostly tell of how these things constitute the majority of our universe, even though we find little to no traces of it in our planet. I guess that's how different our planet is to the others. Or it's just that it's spread out. There are also theories on how dark matter might've been causing the different disasters that change the condition of our planet. According to them, these disasters seem to occur on a 30-million year interval cycle. More information here, I guess. http://news.sciencemag.org/earth/2015/02/did-dark-matter-kill-dinosaurs If I'm not wrong, that's relatively new. There's a lot out there we know about and haven't seen. Just like the inside of a girl's skirt. Probably there are more we don't know. Quote

Nimbus Posted February 23, 2015 Author Posted February 23, 2015 Time for an update. How many senses do human beings have? At least nine. in addition to the five commonly known senses (taste, touch, sight, smell and hearing) we have: 1. Thermoception - a sense of heat on our skin. 2. Equilibrioception - a sense of balance (determined by fluids in ear cavities). 3. Nocieception - a sense of pain from skin, joints and organs. 4. Proprioception - also known as "body awareness" this is the sense that allows us to know where our body and it's limbs are even when we can't see them. Some neurologists think there are even more senses (some up to twenty-one) such as hunger, thirst, depth, sense of meaning, language and even a sense of impending danger when your hair stands on end.
