AlexZandria Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I was just browsing Steam today and realized I owned 4 of the top 10 'Top Sellers' on their Visual Novel tag. The current 'top 10' is HERE but for future reference the current list is: 1) HuniePop 2) Long Live the Queen 3) Hyperdimension Neptuna Re;Birth 1 4) Oblivious Garen ~Carmina Burana 5) Nekopara Vol. 1 6) The Yawhg 7) Sakura Spirit Agarest: Generations of War 9) Sunrider Academy 10) Tokyo School Life I actually own 4 of these 10 myself. Much to my embarrassment, I have Huniepop, LLtQ, Oblivious Garden, and Sakura Spirit. Hyperdimension didn't actually look like a VN to me I thought it was just your average RPG game, same with Agarest. I'd be tempted to buy Sunrider and Tokyo School Life but knowing me, they're probably like Huniepop 5 and Sakura School Life and I'm just too blind to tell. I actually really liked LLtQ, it's one of my favorite games even though it's more of a Raising Sim than a classic Visual Novel. As for the rest of the list I don't even know what to say about it. Pretty sure most of these either shouldn't be under the tag (3 & 8 and probably 1/2) or are rather frowned upon even if they are "popular" (5 & 7). Surprised that titles like Eden* or Planetarian don't start showing up until #15. I have both of Cheritz's VNs on Steam on my WL right now (Nameless and Dandelion) and I might pick one up (they looked to be a few of the best titles from Steam's VN tag). Do any of you guys have Steam VNs in your library? I'm curious to hear what you are playing/have played from Steam's selection. Quote
Nosebleed Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 HuniePop - Not a visual novel, it's a match three dating sim Long Live the Queen - Hard to categorize it as a visual novel, there's a lot of gameplay involved, it's more of a raising sim just like Little Witch Romanesque Hypderminseion Neptunia - lolwat Oblivious Guarden - Actually a VN, though the translation is bad from what I heard Nekopara - This is porn without the porn, so pretty much nothing. The Yawhg - Not a VN, it's a choose your own adventure type of game Sakura Spirit - Considering this a VN is an insult Agarest: Generatios of War - Again not a VN, it's just an RPG Sunrider Academy - An actual VN. Tokyo School Life - Also a VN So yeah, 3 proper VNs on that list. Well, considering Steam tags are defined by users I'm not at all surprised the list is all over the place, or that poorly written porn is at the top. Sunrider Academy and Tokyo School Life have nothing to do with Huniepop if you were wondering. Tokyo School Life is basically like Go Go Nippon, there's really nothing much to it, just a generic highschool themed VN where you go to Japan and meet a couple girls and romance ensues. Sunrider Academy is actually the one on that list I recommend. It was kickstarted a while ago and it looked pretty promising, it's been getting decent reviews as well. Though you should probably play Sunrider first before Sunrider Academy since the latter is a fandisc sort of thing. If you liked Long Live the Queen, you should consider getting Little Witch Romanesque. I don't have any VNs in my Steam library, I don't like using Steam since Steam censors everything so I buy my VNs from their original sources instead. LiquidShu 1 Quote
Stray Cat Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Neptunia is definitely not a VN. I have Narcissu, Planetarian, Sakura Spirit (with much regret), Long Live the Queen, but I haven't played much of them honestly. Quote
TexasDice Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I bought Nekopara five times and I regret nothing. The Major, Zakamutt and Tyrael 3 Quote
AlexZandria Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 I wonder how Neptuna even got the VN tag to begin with :/ is it possible to get Steam to change their tags to begin with. I have almost 100% completion when it comes to LLtQ achievements (and I already contacted Hanako about getting the hard copy of the game) but I haven't played a lot of the other games I own on Steam. I own Actual Sunlight, Go! Go! Nippon, Hatoful BF, Heileen 1 & 2, HuniePop, Journal, Leviathan, LLtQ, Magical Diary, Monster Loves You (if that even counts), Nicole, Oblivious Garden, Sakura Spirit, Shan Gui, Without Within, and X-Note. I got a few of them from Humblebundle/Indiegala. I've only opened 10 of these games before, completely finished 3 and then finished at least 1 path of 2 more. Quote
AlexZandria Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 Texas y u do dis? I've bought Don't Starve Together like 8 times... But you don't need 8 copies of Nekopara at once to play with friends (or yourself). Quote
Nosebleed Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Tags on Steam work pretty much like with vndb, users just suggest a tag and hope it's popular enough to be put there. So yeah some users legitimately think Hyperdimension Neptunia is a vn. Quote
Fiddle Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Analogue: A Hate Story and Hate Plus aren't on the top 10? Analogue: A Hate Story was pretty much the first VN on Steam. Anyway, I have those two plus Long Live the Queen, as well as the Nekopara demo (because all I really wanted in that game was to investigate the chest bounciness feature). Quote

I actually have Littlewitch Romanseque bookmarked to buy later because littlewitch art + raising sim is a definite must. I didn't realize that Sunrider Academy was a fandisk though. I just saw that it got some positive reviews and was recommended for me. I didn't think it was really Huniepop related but I have a bad tendency to impulse buy steam games and then realize they are totally not what I thought they were. I think that is part of the reason I've been posting in Fuwanovel's forums and the VisualNovel sibreddit more lately because now that I'm older and I can more easily acquire games I really want to take a better look at what's coming out and what I'm actually buying. AlexZandria Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 Fiddle, Analogue is like the first or second game on the second page I believe so not far from the top 10, definitely in the top 15. It ranks higher than Hatoful Boyfriend iirc. Also I've been told that chest bounciness isn't even noticeable. Quote

AlexZandria Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 I don't have the credit card required to buy the adult version, but I still want to support sayori. Because I really, really, really need Nekopara Vol 2. Oh Cinnamon, I will do unspeakable things to you... Quote
AlexZandria Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 steam? is that some western gaming site? It's a gaming platform where people can buy games, art programs, game development programs, etc and connect with friends and collect achievements. Dota 2, Don't Starve Together, a lot of MMORPGs like Tera, Raganok, the Final Fantasy games are on it or are set to be released on it. Some English translations of Visual Novels have made it to this platform as well Quote
atorq Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Sunrider Academy isn't much of a VN either, atleast not from what I've seen so far. It's more dating sim with some VN elements. Quote
sanahtlig Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Nekopara - This is porn without the porn, so pretty much nothing. Nekopara is professional quality and actually pretty well-rated on both VNDB and EGS. Seems like the sort of game Sakura Spirit wanted to be. Its popularity is probably deserved. When people ask for recommendations, I try to nudge them towards higher quality titles of the same type. If someone showed interest in a title like Sakura Spirits, I wouldn't have a problem saying, "If you want to buy this, don't. Buy this instead." Quote
Nosebleed Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Well Nekopara has cute catgirls AND bouncing boobs, you can't go wrong with that, I can't deny I enjoyed "reading" it, but in terms of story it doesn't really do anything relevant or important, it's just context for porn, which is why I find it amazing people can even enjoy the Steam version that cut out half the content. The difference between Sakura Spirit and Nekopara is that the latter knows what it wants to do, it actually delivers all the porn, or at the very least, all the cute catgirls with bouncing boobs for all your needs and it's just a slice of life type of setting, simple and effective, while Sakura Spirit is stuck on this limbo pretending it's some form of soft core porn while at the same time trying to take its own story seriously which just results in a vomit inducing game. Some people enjoy walking the line without crossing it, and actually find that more stimulating. One of my major criticisms of nukige is that they tend to just be porn slideshows without proper buildup of sexual tension. i just don't find that very interesting. Quote
TexasDice Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 As someone who's watching bad movies on a regular basis, I can say that Sakura Spirit has atleast some unintentionally funny moments. Like my favorite moment at the festival towards the end. (I can't put enough quotation marks around the word "Spoiler", so I won't even try.) The two human girls are at the festival, dressed in kimono, but still holding their (nonexistent) weapons in place, because the artist wasn't paid enough to draw a second set of sprites. I actually remember laughing out loud at that part. Sakura Spirit fails so badly at everything it is trying to do, I got entertainment out of watching it die and crawl. But no, I wouldn't read it again, it's not funny-bad enough. And I wouldn't pay for it. And thank god it was only three hours long. Quote
Satsuki Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 NekoPara, Princess Evangile, Narcissu, Eden, IMHHW, Planetarian, Go Go Nippon, Tokyo School Life, Pyrite Heart are what I have. Quote
Ceris Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I have Agarest and Neptunia on that list, and both are definitely not VNs They're RPGs with a story told in VN format though. Quote
kratoscar2008 Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I have Agarest and Neptunia on that list, and both are definitely not VNs They're RPGs with a story told in VN format though. If Rance and Blaz Blue games are in the database and considered VNs then Agarest and Neptunia fit as well. Quote

I totally forgot about Eden*. I got it from MG and I have the steam key for it but I haven't redeemed it yet. Quote
AlexZandria Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 If Rance and Blaz Blue games are in the database and considered VNs then Agarest and Neptunia fit as well. Agarest actually got deleted from vndb with the reason cited "Not a VN" Quote
