Down Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 When i read Hunter x Hunter, i'm expecting art that looks like it was drawn by a 5 year old. But at least everything looks the same. Nosebleed, please go read pre-Ant HxH and find scans of the tankoubon versions for the Ant and post-Ant arcs instead of the Jump scans =( It hurts to see Togashi getting dissed because of the punctual horrible mess that were those infamous chapters in the Ant arc. Yes, this is more than a week late and off-topic. Eclipsed 1 Quote
Toranth Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 For Kanon just watch the anime. Sure it's not the same as playing through the whole story but at least you'll get the good partsJust be sure to watch the 2006 version, not the crappy 2002 version. You miss out on a fair amount of slice-of-life stuff, but it does a good job of covering the story routes. For Air... don't play or watch Air. This might be an unpopular opinion but I don't think Air is a work Key should be proud of and I don't think people should feel any desire to read it. Air is one of the best written VNs out there. Excellent characters, good story, amazing music. 15 years later, I still find dust in my eyes whenever I hear Aozora. It might lack subtlety when you find out about the curse, but it's a secret for most of the game - unlike every other 'sick' character out there. Much better than, say, Shiori. Quote
Getsuya Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 Sorry I only experienced the anime version of Air. It only gives you a few episodes of normalcy and then suddenly slams the stupid twist in your face. The navel-gazing levels of the ending were also astronomical. After seeing the anime I have 0 interest in the VN since, even if everything leading up to it is amazing, I would still have to deal with the horrible, horrible twist and ending. Quote
Nosebleed Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 Endings to visual novels like Air and Planetarian are what made Key good. After Clannad all their stories started using the same formula, always the ridiculous asspull to make the ending happy when everything is going wrong. So really i would have preferred memorable drama with a bad/sad ending over poorly written good endings, because it flows better, because it makes much more sense and in my opinion because it makes anything much more memorable. And mind you i know most happy endings to romance stories are cheesy as hell, but Key really goes to the far end of asspulls with ridiculous plot devices and tries to play it super serious and that's what made them lose credibility for me. I promise you that Misuzu is still in the back of my head and bringing tears to my eyes when i think about her while Nagisa just makes me go ehhh. The concept that something sad equals something bad is ridiculous. When i watch anime like Ima Soko ni Iru, Boku, my heart is turned into cinders, but i swear i'll never forget the painful journey it was, and that's what makes it so good. But that's just me. Quote
Getsuya Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 Right I guess I should point out that my negative opinion is based on 1. The fact that I've only watched the anime which is admittedly a very crappy version of the game and 2. Regardless of how it made me feel (and I did feel all those feels) I thought the conflict in Air was very contrived and unrealistic. It felt like they were just inventing reasons for characters to be depressed so they would tug at your heartstrings more. In no way did I mean to say that just because it's depressing it's bad. I also take back my 'don't play it' because that's just my opinion. Anyone who can stand the art should definitely at least give it a try and figure out for themselves if they like it or not. I mean, VNs are incredibly subjective things so you should always try it out for yourself. Which is kind of why this thread is silly. Quality is in the eye of the beholder, and anyone will know from the instant they look at the cover art for any of these games whether they'll be able to play them or not due to artistic concerns. No use sitting around trying to get everyone to agree on whether these games are 'good' or 'bad'. Quote
