I'd say that I got impressed by the sprites in Hoshizora no Memoria when I played it. The reason is probably because I usually play really old VNs, and I started with the "new"(2006+) [or at least graphically good] VNs recently. I really liked the way they made the eyes of the Steins Gate characters as well.1 point

Also one more example of the point, try to have this rendered in 3d as in RPG, it would be almost impossible with all the details you can see there. But when it is just image, the author can add any detail he wants and it doesn't affect performance at all. This is actually a CG from a VN ( http://vndb.org/v8036 )1 point

Well the "sharpness" might simply be because it is in 1280x720 over the classic 800x600 which most translated VNs have. But I wouldn't call it "graphical quality" but rather artstyle. It is KEY so there is high quality for CGs and characters but there are people who prefer different style. You can look at games that are 10 years old and still see beautiful characters, but just because it is rendered in lower resolution (this one is even 640x480) doesn't make it less good the static art used in VNs is eternal and it only depends on the artist. there can be VN with 1080p resolution but bad artist and the fact they have "better graphics" doesn't actually make it nicer. Rewrite is just combination of relatively good resolution, awesome artstyle and UI design (the moving parts and all that looks very nice). But then you can look at some of the games that have animated CGs, are in realtime 3d or have the new live2d technology - and it is graphically more advanced than rewrite which just uses static sprites on BG and nice CGs. So what I say is that there is no "graphics" in visual novels, not in the sense you use it for other games, there you look at the texture resolution, polygon count on models, antialiasing and all those technologies that allow you to render the 3d game in realtime. In normal VNs there is no realtime rendering so there is no need have technologies that save graphical power - therefore no graphics - its just an image and it depends on how the image is drawn. Also lot of gamers mistake graphics for aesthetics. There can be game that has inferior graphics but has good world design and aesthetics and looks better than for example BF3 which has so powerful graphical engine, but is ruined by all the wrong decisions from developer side, blue tint over the screen, lens flares etc ruining the whole picture. But that is just my opinion on it, some people might like these effects, for me it ruined the game. And the same way it is with VNs, there can be so good artstyle that I love but other people don't. Because both artstyle in VNs (which is often times linked to the author) and aesthetics in videogames are very subjective thing. I can say I love character design that looks like this where as other people prefer very different one and even hate to see this style in VNs. So to at least little answer the topic, FOR ME Rewrite is the best looking game that has English patch but as mentioned above, it is very subjective. There are people who like style like http://vndb.org/v7576 but I don't enjoy it at all.1 point

PSP VNs!
KnightFire reacted to Tief Blau for a topic
Please read the disclaimer/other at the end What you need: 1. A psp 2. A microusb or a Memory Stick Duo Adaptor 3. Software that can extract rar files 4. Converted games (you need to own the game first) Steps: 1. Download ONScripter for Psp - Here 2. Extract the files, you should see something like below: 3. Connect your psp to your computer 4. Create a folder in Psp\game called ONS 5. Go back to the extracted onscripter-20110111_psp folder and click on the "ONS" folder, you should see something like below: 6. Copy the EBOOT.PBP and the ons.ini files and paste them into psp\GAME\ONS 7. Open a game (legally obtained) 8. Locate 3 files and copy them into the same directory as EBOOT.PBP Arc.nsa or arc.sar (these files have all the sprites, backgrounds and voices, sometimes music) 0.txt or nscript.dat (this file has the story, and has instructions pertaining to music and voices) default.ttf (font, if your game doesn't have one, I think any will do.) IF your game has separate music, it would be a good idea to copy that over as well Create another folder called CD inside it and place the music in there (should be in .ogg or .mp3) 9. After copying, your folder should look like this: 10. Put memory stick back into psp 11. Turn psp on 12. Go to games 13. Press X on ONSCRIPTER for PSP 20110111 (hopefully no crashes here) Disclaimer/other: 1. This is an older version of ONScripter (I think, not too sure) 2. ONScripter website 3. This is actually a rather crude method, because I don't know how to load more then one game at a time. 4. If you intend on playing ONScripter based games, they need to be resized, I don't know how to do that (have an android tablet with a high enough native resolution ) Original games: what happens when you fail to resize them: 5. I think this EBOOT is actually signed, so non cfw might be able to run it 6. the DDL link is NOT the original, it is a reupload by me because I was unable to find the original one. 7. I think my psp has B10 CFW (if you wanted to know, last time I checked, I could use PSN with B10 CFW) -EDIT- Erm... I don't really know what engine what games run on aside from a select few, you will have to ask around for romance stories.1 point -
Recommendation for Tablet to play VNs
KnightFire reacted to Tief Blau for a topic
Huzzah! A Topic that I can finally contribute to! Well eclipse, that would really depend on what tablet you have. Windows RT Tablet I have no idea, never owned one. But this might possibly work. Windows 8 Tablet If it works, then you can play it (Win8 has some compatibility issues with other things, a lot of them having to do with engines that VN's are written on ex. kirikiri or rUGP) iOS (iPad) There are some on the iTunes App Store. But not much Some people also report using xclannad to play some Key games. You could always use a VNC client (but if you did that, the games wouldn't actually be on your iPad) Though it hasn't been updated since 2012, you could always try Almight Android The largest selection after Windows tablets Almight, again (though it really is useless) The you have ppsspp, which is a psp emulator, but if you had psp iso's of VNs then you could play them through this theoretically. VNDS which is an interpreter, it requires you to convert the game using converters foundhere. It started off as a DS reader, but then the dev decided to port it to android. You could also use a VNC client You could use ONScripter for Android or Habakiri to run ONScripter based (Higurashi, Umineko, Tsukihime, most older games) or Kirikiri (G Senjou no Maou, erm.. newer games) 0m3ga engine Ren'py has an android option There are also a lot of Visual Novels on Google Play. D.C and D.C.II And 恋姫夢想 Trial version of 恋姫 Kindle Put android on it. Hope this was helpful1 point
