Sooo, I live in Japan! And I thought there might be some of you who had questions about what life is like here The very brief version of how I got here: I'm originally from the UK. I fell in love with anime & manga when I was about 13. When it came to make my university applications, I decided to choose to study Japanese~ I spent 5 years at university, 1 of which was spent at a university in Japan. I graduated in Summer 2012 and started looking for jobs in Japan (which btw is very difficult if you're not already living there). I finally found something and came over in October 2012. Since then I've been living and working in Tokyo. I've been at the same company the whole time, but I'm leaving next month to work as a freelance translator full time~ I know there's a few other members who live in Japan, and I'm sure many people have visited, so please feel free to share your experiences

In topic Solidbatman created "MangaGamer Considering Crowd Funding" a lot people said that they would be willing to donate if MangaGamer choose to use fundings for some good no nukige VN. So I thought why don't we (Fuwanowel) start crowd funding in order to pay people to do fan-translations. I mean there would surely be a lot people who would be willing to translate VNs if they were to get paid to do it, they don't even have to like VNs as long as they have good knowledge of both English and Japanese and they want to earn some money from home that would be good enough. We could easily find people like that on some freelancer site. And as we would be funding for fan-projects and not for sale we could without problem give fans a choice to choose what VN they want to get translated with their donations. So we first put up a news about this project and we give a pool for witch VN they would like to get translated (In the pool we put only VNs that there's no project for already) once people decide we start crowd funding and once we get enough money we search for freelancers. So what's your opinion about the idea? Personally, I don't see any reason why to not do it.

That culture you speak of though is what makes Japan so unique. As a language major, to me it is with no doubt easy to say that "language is culture, and culture is language." The distinct difference in Japan between the Honne (本音) and Tatemae (建前) is what makes it such a different beast. Sure, the younger generation (I guess my generation) is exposed to the outside world now so the culture has adapted similar ways of doing things (as you said drinking, hanging out with friends, etc.), but the cultural concepts I mentioned still exist. The Tatemae (建前). In American culture, the prescribed answer for the rhetorical "How are you doing?" is always "Fine thanks" or something similar. Most will be taken off guard by a truthful answer and were not intending to invest so much into that unit of the interaction in the first place. The same goes in the Japanese culture. The term of a "white lie" comes into play here, knowing full well that Japanese people will go out of their way to make sure people understand their life is going well, even if it isn't. It's very rare for a Japanese person I met to open up to me about problems in life, much like we do here in my culture. If anything, when I would tell a story about a problem I was facing (for the day or month, whatever), Japanese people would basically respond in ways that are apologetic. They would understand that what I am going through must be tough, yet they wouldn't really offer advice or share their own stories and would just respond with the "Fine thanks" idea. Again, this isn't to say that the culture is always like this, but still. The difference between cultures here therefore lies in the idea that American culture as well as many others are much more open to opinions. If I hate my boss at work and think it sucks balls, I will tell my family and friends the truth, straight out. Japan on the other hand usually doesn't open up that way unless they are drinking with friends. In fact, this difference in expressing opinions is what made a friend of mine I met in Tokyo have trouble with an English exam he needed to pass in order get into a university over in America. He had trouble on the written portion of the exam, where the test asks you opinionated questions (easy ones with no prior knowledge needed) and whether you disagree or agree with something. He had trouble even knowing where to begin or how to form his own opinion on the matter. I think that's what makes the culture unique. So while you say that it's just a different place with a different culture, it really is cool. But anyways, language major rant. Lawl.

Well actually fuwa is a TL base that is different from the other websites like tlwiki and as such TL projects happen here, like the EH project is a Fuwa project, since I use this forum and the blog to promote and recruit people. It is one of the goals - to celebrate fan translation and contribute to it as well by gathering kind and hard working people here and as you can see in the Fan TL registration topic, it is very successful. So you could say fuwa doesnt do TLs but is a community of groups that do translations, just like tlwiki and similar websites. But either way, it is FAN translation which means it is free, and even when I asked the people on the EH team if they want me to setup donations for cookies, they said they do it from love and passion and would not want to receive money for it - and that's the right attitude we want here.

Well only one with rank Admin is Tay, but the whole website is community effort so you need to trust us mods too. And I already mentioned the goal of fuwanovel is to make stuff FREE for everyone, which means that if you want free stuff you also do stuff for free to produce it. If we turned into a "VN publisher" who hires professional translators, it completely undermines the foundation of fuwanovel. Not to mention that passionate fan translators make much better job than people who have no idea what they are translating, however professional they might be, they will not catch the exact meaning we VN readers know and like. Also not to mention that hiring professional translators is nigh on impossible. Take normal moege VN - 50,000 lines of lets say average 10 English words per such line, translators from JP to EN on the sites I visit are paid for target word, so that is lets say 500,000 words. Rate for a professional translator used for Video Game industry is 0.13$ per target word, that is 65,000$ for a normal VN - there is no way you can get that kind of money EVER, most of the VNs don't even make that much profit in Japan. Check lot of the VN projects that are popular by different means, for example the SC2 OEL VN - it got really popularized by SC2 community and teamliquid and such, and they got 8,000$ and just barely passed their goal. So EVEN IF you figure out how to make it legal (host in different country, money accounts transferring through some Russian websites, overcome the problems of not paying the translators in paypal because paypal would ban you for breaking the law), even if you can somehow legally do it, you can NEVER get the money required to pay the translators. That's why most of the projects are FAN projects with maybe a donation button to get them a pizza while working on it, and also the reason companies like MG actually often times just buy the fan translations for much less than its actually worth. Or they pay their translators much less, and it can be then noticeable on the quality. So again, this idea is cool sounding at first and it would be nice if it could work in this world, but it is literally IMPOSSIBLE.

I wouldn't so easily dismiss this as illegal, in fact I think this is an issue that is open to legal debate. If professional translators are hired (through the donations), they would not own their labor. Meaning that the people paying them own their labor, (Fuwa). So long as the owners of the labor are not profiting, it does not seem illegal. Infact, not only would the owners of the labor not be profiting, but we would actually be losing money because we are distributing the translation patch for free. Those of you arguing that the translator's are profiting are thinking in a very socialist way. You are essentially arguing that the workers (translators) own their labor, and are thus profiting off of it. Laborers who are payed are not profiting, as they are selling their labor to us. Theoretically we can have them translate anything, what legally matters is what we (the owners of the translations and their labor) do with the translation. Since we would own their translated work, (as we would be paying them to translate for us), the only people legally responsible for making money are those who own the translation. So long as the translation is distributed for free, no profit is made, and thus nothing illegal is occurring. Investopedia's definition of profit is, "A financial benefit that is realized when the amount of revenue gained from a business activity exceeds the expenses, costs and taxes needed to sustain the activity. Any profit that is gained goes to the business's owners, who may or may not decide to spend it on the business. Calculated as: " Through this definition, if you do the math you can can see that no profit would be made at all. We would have expenses, but no revenue would be generated. In other words if we plug in. (Profit = 0 - x). x being our expenses.

Yeah, I know of it. I played the game. And dropped it after a certain scene in Chapter 4. Since it was the only reason I kept playing, honestly.

I like the fluff as long as it's not exaggerated and in balance with what the VN is trying to accomplish. But i think what this does is, like InvertMouse pointed out, make you get attached to the characters and see more of their personality rather than just events and the plot moving forward. I think it's something you need and as long as it's well balanced it shouldn't really be harmful in my opinion. I mean i loved the fight scenes in Little Busters. One of the things i loved hte most were those breaks in the baseball practice where you could watch Kurugaya mess around with the girls. I absolutely LOVED those moments and they genuinely made me laugh. I think it's just because SoL is one of my favorite genres but i just personally like this stuff and like growing attached to the characters. That's just me though.

Haha, I actually liked him, I could relate quite well - but not to such extremes, of course. Though considering C;H was one of my first VNs, the 'fresh' feeling probably made it all seem a bit better than it actually was.
