  2. O.K. here we go. There are two different categories of defining human. One we previously discussed, biology, if you are able to mate with others of the same species then you are a human. But that's to easy an answer for most people so let's examine the other option, culture. Many people will say "what is culture?", here is the definition that I was taught: Culture: The system of shared beliefs, values, customs, behaviors, and artifacts that the members of society use to cope with their world and with one another, and that are transmitted from generation to generation through learning. Typically a culture would contain these 4 components: symbolic composition, systematic patterning, learned transmission, societal grounding. Because there are so many different cultures in the world, there is no universal standard for what is necessary to make one, however things such as knowledge of how to act as a member of a particular society, knowledge of what is expected of an individual in a particular group, and knowledge of what actions are considered right and wrong for a particular group are common and probably the closest thing we have as a standard. Addressing the issue of differences between animals and "why can't animals have culture". The prevailing thought today is that animals look only too their own survival and fitness while humans do not. Picture a firefighter for example. He risks his life every day to save people that are total strangers to him. Aiding these people do not increase his biological fitness in any way yet he still risks life and limb to save them. There is cooperation among animal groups but there is nothing to this degree, which is why many people still hold that it is the defining factor of humanity. Addressing the person who is brain dead, I believe that since they still had a life and learned a culture they were human. Whether they continue being human after is tough to say but I would probably go with no on the cultural view but yes on the biological view because is most cases they can reproduce fine. As for whether or not criminals and psychopaths are still humans, I would say yes, on both accounts. They are able to sexually reproduce and are they have a specific culture, although it may go completely against what you believe. They know how to act a a member of their "own" society, and they have their own expectations and sense of right and wrong, as well so they fit into some minute, abstract not accepted cultural model, but it's still a culture. I can honestly see this one argued either way though. Hopefully people read this far.

  3. "The unexamined life is not worth living." -- Socrates What traits does a human being have that an animal doesn't? -the ability to reject your instincts. Human beings go on hunger strikes. They deliberately abstain from sex. They force themselves to stay awake when they are sleepy. And so on. As far as I know, animals don't do these things... -they are sentient. They are not only aware of their own existence, but they can also question it. -they have a complex language. Many people feel that words are the basis for humans' ability to reason. All around the world, languages that were once assumed to be primitive, once carefully studied, turned out to have the same ability to express abstract concepts as the languages in supposedly higher civilizations. And unlike writing, no one has been able to trace spoken language back to its origin. It seems that as long as humans have existed, language has existed.

    Your favorite Pixiv

Technically links to pixiv and possibly discussion, who knows. Hisona My #1 favorite, his works are kinda sloppy, but I think that suits me just fine. Henki I like his style, specially the hair, looks so retro. Unidentified Kanji #1 His works can be pretty smooth. I should just go study Japanese Really good wallpaper material. Yurami something He's pretty cool too. 6 Probably my second favorite. ksw He draws Accelerator, and he does a really good job. hakusai For Miku fans out there. I can read this much, but... what a pain to write down I just fell for his Seiba Hakuri For more Vocaloid. More annoying kanji You'll find at least one picture to your liking. Blah blah blah Not Touhou, nor Vocaloid, what a hipster. bon Really cool. An2A This guy's works are gorgeous. tecoyuke They're so cute. kazeharu Another one of my favorites. Narota No Touhou here either. maru Not many works, but he's latest work is great. I won't even bother trying Do it for KagePro guys. Yu His works are trully cute, this is another one of my favorites. Blah blah blah #2 He's works are pretty smooth too. *Yawns* See for yourselves. Panchi This guy is a feast for the eyes. Alright, this took me a while, so there might be a little mistake on a link somewhere. Also, I do not take any responsibility for NSFW content coming from one of these links, almost of them are safe, but Pixiv is a place where you can turn NSFW on and off, so yeah. The only one who's enough of a pervert to warn you would be the "*Yawns*" one So, what are your favorite Pixiv illustrators? Do you even use Pixiv? I'm told it's not used that much.

  10. true ends are true because that's how the story is meant to play out according to the person directing the story. they aren't necessarily "good" since most true ends are pretty dark. True ends tend to have an actual ending, and an actual plot to follow, while games without a true end tend to just kind of meander off in to "be nice to chicks, get laid".

  11. Say I make a VN. I then pick a random route with no more info than the others and say "hey, this is the true route. Once I make a sequel, it'll be based on this ending, and I hereby declare it canon". Well, the author said it. He's the one who gets to pick what ending is canon (you can deny it if you want to, but in the end the decision is still his). The true route doesn't need to show any secret or be more important than the other ones, it just tends to be.

  23. My take on this, while being approached differently, is a restating of exactly what Tenkuru said. However, my words aren't really meant to be taken at complete face value so beware. We are distinguishable from, not just animals, but all other existence in that we can learn of our own ignorance. What defines us as "human beings" is to do with the unique way we use language in accordance to all other forms of existence. Animals/plants/etc. will establish a connection via some form of "communication" in order to progress, and this is simply known as language. The difference is that it's something they need to do as a part of their "code for survival" as it could be put, enacting upon language only when and if it's completely necessary... whereas human beings are free to use language as if it's a toy, whenever and wherever they want (this was due to happen over periods of such successful progress). Becoming so accustomed to expressing thoughts, speeches, and patterns in this effortless fashion (no sacrifices have to be made) is how we develop skepticism and start applying it to ourselves and everything else, as well as language itself. We are continuously drawing finer and finer outlines that separate on the abstract "painting of meshed-together colors" that is the entire world. The other way to put it is that we'll just take a blind leap, make a baseless assumption, ask a foolish question and it then makes us more aware of the limits to our expression of language in accordance to ourselves as an established rule (a certain philosopher by the name of Ludwig Wittgenstein talks about this, check him out if interested). The language we have applies what are "filters" to our perceptions of the world around us, which then effects us. Everything not perceived is then a part of the great unknown encompassing infinite possibilities. Here's a pretty cool example which I frequently use a lot to bring across the point that's really important. When the Pilgrims first arrived on America after their long journey, they then met with the tribes of Indians inhabiting the land there. What do you think the Indians saw when they met the Pilgrims? They saw "white men" err "walking on water". Because the Indians had no way to express or define in their language what was a "boat" or "ship" being that they've never seen one before, it was then like the thing didn't even exist! They also realized that treading on water was inexplicable so those beings that looked like them were somewhat if not completely alien. A constant and continuous exposure to those mystical-like occurrences is what gets us asking questions, especially baseless ones which then involve skepticism. Otherwise, there would've been no need as base instincts are something like a code to only be followed. Conclusion is that what really defines human beings is the almost miraculous (it wasn't a miracle though, which is what I realized) amount of success during progress as a species we've had in comparison to pretty much, everything else. Because of this, we built a multilayered structure of language to be easily used and it's what makes us so unique.

  26. In my opinion, what sets humans an animals apart is the ability to ask questions. This had been discussed on a Vsauce video I watched awhile back. Animals can do all sorts of clever things we humans do.They can use tools, problem solve, communicate, cooperate, exhibit curiosity, plan for the future, and, although we can't know for sure, many animals certainly act as if they feel emotions. Apes have even been taught to use sign language to talk to humans. They used it to answer questions, express emotion or even produce novel thoughts. However, there's something that they've never done. No ape has ever asked a question. They have never ever wondered, out loud, about anything we might know that they don't. This doesn't mean that they aren't curious, they obviously are. They just lack a "Theory of Mind", an understanding that other people have separate minds. Even us humans aren't born with that. Look up the "Salley-Anne" test if you're interested. Animals fail to understand that other individuals have similar cognitive abilities, and can be used as sources of information.

  28. A point brought up in a conversation with clephas a few days ago in the differences between fan translating VNs and anime is that translating VNs is a lot more solitary without people to chat to. Chat doesn't directly help the project complete, and may even slow down progress (maybe?), but I think it would decrease fall off rates (wishful thinking probably)

  29. The aforesaid proposition that a "human" (not in accordance with biological classification, but more so in the "not inhuman" or "person" sense) is defined by morality, in my opinion, is mistaken. A number of experiments have been done that support that animals are capable of complete selflessness. And this morality isn't merely a long-term investment; some animals can feel guilt and such just as we might. I was trying to find the particular article I've read of a certain experiment, but couldn't find it. Oh well, this is an insightful one as well.

  32. Not being able to tell the difference between a human and a robot would be a nightmare, there is a fine line robotics must not cross, one is giving them sentience, the other, human appearence. They are not us, therefore they should not look or act like us. I do not, robotics is only neat now because Its still in development, It has much to evolve, right now Its pure sci-fi, however, once robots start being mass produced and replacing human workers we will have a problem, corporations and the rulling elite would have probabily replaced any sort of government by then, and they give even less of a shit for folks like you and me, meat for the meatgrinder in their eyes. I dont see any positive outcome. Society would quickly fall into decadence once people start heavily relying on robots in their everyday life.

  42. One of the most valuable things required to succeed in fan translation is motivation, and chance of success is related to how much a translator cares about getting that game released. I really have no faith in the "job bulletin board" concept, and don't think it applies at all to a field where there is no incentive except for one's personal motivation. It may have some lucky hits here and there, but as a whole is kind of outdated. The minimum requirement to get this kind of concept to work is to create some kind of demand for wanting to be a translator that is not immediately overwhelmed by the supply of things to translate. I'd even go as far as argue that this very "job bulletin board" model is also why there are so many failed translation projects. (Of course, I can't argue that it increases the amount of failed translation projects, since the reason there would be less would be because there are less translation projects in general, and a translation project not started is technically a dead project) Well, enough ranting. The state of fan translation is pretty difficult to change, and I don't think it will ever get to the level of anime/manga simply due to how much harder and less rewarding translating a VN is.

    Katawa Shoujo

Katawa Shoujo Summary Hisao Nakai is a normal kid living a normal life. A senior in High School, things seem to be going his way until, in the middle of a love confession, his heart seizes up and he collapses. Upon waking, Hisao is informed that he has a heart arrhythmia: a condition which will require major lifestyle changes if he wants to stay healthy. Katawa Shoujo is the story of a boy, force-transferred to a school for disabled kids, and his special friends who open his eyes to what life is truly about. Ending Guide Katawa Shoujo is divided into five story arcs (one for each of the central characters), or "routes": Lilly Hanako Emi Rin Shizune You will encounter each of these girls several times in the course of Act 1, and depending on your choices, the game will select a route for you to take. Act 2 (through the end of the game) will be different for each story arc, or "route". What this means, of course, is that Act 1 is extremely complex in terms of choices (and the computer variables and flags associated with them). This complexity makes for an awesome story, but is difficult to explain in a textual walkthrough. Consequently, please consider the following advice: I recommend playing through Act 1 making the choices that come naturally to you, and observing each of the girls carefully. By the end of Act 1, you'll more or less know in your heart which route you want to start with. If you made choices by listening to your heart, you'll probably have already ended up in the route you want! If that's not the case, or you're playing through the game again and want to follow a different route, please see the individual route walkthroughs: they will guide you from the beginning of the game until the end, and will faithfully see you through to your chosen heroine. Thank you for using this walkthrough. Katawa Shoujo is the first visual novel I ever played, and it will always hold a special place in my heart. Also... Lilly forever! Route Walkthroughs PROLOGUE Katawa Shoujo opens to a prologue of sorts (a snowy confession) which leads immediately into Act 1: Life Expectancy. Lily Good and Neutral Endings Hanako Good and Neutral Endings Bad Ending Emi Good and Neutral Endings Bad Ending Rin Good, Neutral and Bad Endings Shizune Good and Bad Endings Note: Katawa Shoujo features notifications on choice screens which will help you see whether or not you've made a choice before. This will help all of the 100%-Driven players out there. As an added resource, please see this incredible flowchart, made by Feuver. If you're missing scenes, I'd focus on getting all the bad ends -- especially in Act 1 (they're probably what you're missing). Attribution This guide was based heavily on both Feuver's flowchart as well as information gleamed directly from personal experience as well as the official Katawa Shoujo site. A big thanks to Four Leaf Studios, the creators of the game, for the wonderful memories and powerful stories they've left us
