VN Reading Club - November (Ayakashibito)
XD forever and one other reacted to Clephas for a topic
I'm sure some of you hadn't played Ayakashibito before are now starting to notice this, so I thought I'd go into more detail about 'paths transcending heroines'. Touko- Touko is based off of a fairly common type of heroine in VNs, that of the self-sacrificing yamato nadeshiko. In moege in particular, this kind of heroine is usually used as a counter or a foil for a classic tsundere or genkikko. She has the added qualities you all know about now but the base of her character is rather common in VNs. So what makes her part of Ayakashibito so good? To be blunt, it is the scenario. When I talk about using cliches/archetypes/tropes well, I generally mean games like this. The fact is, all of the virtues of this path are cliche... and yet somehow the path completely transcends those cliches. The more you play VNs, the more you'll realize how often cliches will be included into the story... in the end, it is how a cliche is used that defines the quality of the plot, in most cases. Tonya- Tonya's character is a little less common... the apparently disinterested heroine who Nonetheless, this has long-since achieved the level of a cliche in more serious VNs... and yet, Tonya's path still manages to touch the heart of a jaded bastard like me on the third playthrough. The addition of adds another level of cliche to the path... and yet it is still undeniably a great path. Why? Because the way it was written transcends cliches and the heroines themselves. Kaoru- This is perhaps the path in which 'heroines being transcended by their paths' is most obvious. To be blunt, about half the people who play Ayakashibito are going to hate Kaoru. There are lots of reasons for this However, a lot of the people who absolutely despise her character reluctantly admit that her path is great... again, why is this? Simple, because the path's story transcends her faults as a heroine. Suzu- I'm going to be blunt here, despite being a long-time Suzu fan (and having a kitsunekko fetish). Objectively speaking, Suzu is your classic 'girl with a special power that everybody with ambitions wants to use'. The fact of her intimate family-like relationship to the protagonist is also very common in this type of scenario. Anybody who has played Tales of Symphonia or a number of other jrpgs will recognize the basic scenario archetype... and yet, hardly anybody denies that this is the best path in an already high-quality VN. For those who read this path... can you honestly disagree with the fact that you stopped caring about the de ja vu moments (if you noticed them at all) after only a short time into the story? Edit: You'll see this in practically all the paths in the good Propeller games and good chuuni games in general... in Bullet Butlers, the elf girl is probably one of the worst heroines I've ever come across... and yet her path maintains the same level of enjoyment I encountered in the paths of other, more interesting heroines in the same game.2 points -

Register on this thread if you're interested in participation on a project and have the available time and commitment. Alternatively, you could look for a project yourself in this thread here: https://forums.fuwanovel.net/index.php?/topic/7108-list-of-projects-currently-recruiting/ Format 1) Handle (the one you use or plan to use): 2) Positions you can fill: 3) Types of projects (VNs) preferred: 4) Availability (edit this one as you get involved in projects): 5) (VNs most interested in producing an ftl for: 6) Motivation for joining in on ftl: 7) Conditions* (any additional conditions, under which you will or won't work): *Please mention whether you are fine with working on Yuri, Yaoi and Otome games. It is recommended you don't say 'anything' on your 'preferred VNs' section. You should always pick games that fit your interests or were good enough to keep your interest even after it has tortured you for several hundred hours. It's one thing to take anything when you are making money, it is quite another to do so when you are a volunteer. Example (by Clephas): This thread has various rules to ensure the highest accuracy and usability: -Do not register here if you believe you will be unavailable soon after. Commitment is necessary for projects. -Please make sure to click "Show 'edit by' line" when editing you post, or at least, add a date for when it was last updated if you can help it. -This thread will be heavily moderated to assure only posts which fulfill all the conditions will remain. -If you fail to follow the format you will be PM'ed and we will inquire about what you missed. You will then edit your post with the missing information or will have it edited by a board mod. -People who still remain on this thread will all be PM'ed by a board mod in order to ask whether they are still as readily available as they were when they registered. This will happen irregularly (but probably not more than 3 times a year).1 point

Hello everyone! :D
crunchytaco reacted to nicoco for a topic
Hello everyone!!! I'm Nicole (not sure if real names are allowed but I always like to share my name to feel a little more approachable!) Please feel free to either call me by my name or my alias - Nicoco! I'm a first year uni-student living in Australia and I've been interested in anime/manga since my mother read to me in her womb (lol I'm joking of course~ hahaha). But yeah I guess it started with Death Note in year 8? Not sure if it matters but I've been an avid watcher/reader since then I'm primarily an Otome game player (hope you guys don't judge!! haha) but yeah besides games from Rejet, Otomate, Idea Factory etc. etc. I've also played Swan Song, Fate/Stay Night, Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni and Sekien no Inganock/Shikkoku no Sharnoth from what I can remember (I'm sure there are more). And Dangan Ronpa I guess if that counts! Speaking of gaming I've also played Persona 3 and quite enjoyed that. I also have Katawa Shoujo installed on my PC but waiting until exams finish before I get started on that :33 I guess I discovered VN's after finding this app in the Itunes store called Juniper's Knot... then I searched up the term visual novel and voila! Discovered this amazing and extensive community! I'm actually new to forums in GENERAL D: So I'm a bit nervous~ My first post on here was actually on the FTL registration forum! I want to help out as much as I can and hope I can be relied on by ftl groups at least as a proofreader/editor. I got an offer from some otome translation group and I'm actually pretty excited Soooo... sorry if this has bored you so far or if it's too long to read but it's really nice to meet you all! And I hope to get to know you all soon!1 point -

Hello!
crunchytaco reacted to Dr4n3t for a topic
Hi everyone! As you can tell my username is Dr4n3t(or dranet if it's easier to type ). I'm from Poland. I'm 22 years old and I study IT. I started watching anime when I was in highschool, my friends were talking about something called Bleach and I had to find out what it is, and that's basically how i got into all this anime stuff Since I'm a type of guy that has to do his own research, I searched for others interesting anime making my backlog ever growing and even now, few years later, I'm far from completing all of it... Anyway I got into Visual Novels through Katawa Shoujo, more precisely Emi route of said VN since that's the only route I finished... But it was enough to get me interested, after that I've read Princess Waltz, Sengoku Rance and Narcissu, so I'm still rather new to the medium. Right now I'm getting through a few visual novels (I have a bad habit of starting new things before finishing other stuff), namely Umineko, HoshiMemo, Majikoi, FSN and almost done with Castle Fantasia... So i have a lot to read xD I'm also eagerly awaiting DA Inquisition, it looks so awesome Anyway, nice to meet you all guys!1 point -
Fuwanovel's Fanfic Competition
crunchytaco reacted to Rose for a topic
Welcome to Fuwanovel's Fanfic Competition! Greetings and salutations! I am Rose and I'm here to announce that I'll be making a fanfic competition. This is a kind of test run for this project as I wish to know how well it'll go, if people will be interested in participating or not. Depending on the results, I might do more editions with different novels, prizes and rules. Since it's a test, I decided to make it in a pretty simple format. Even then, I'm aiming to be as fair as possible with everyone so we'll be using the same visual novel, genre, chapters and time limit for all the participants. The visual novel used for the fanfics will be Katawa Shoujo, the genre will be romance and they must be one-shots (One chapter limit) with a maximum of 2000 words, they also have to be originally yours. Breaking any of the previous rules will result in an instant disqualification. To participate all you have to do is post a reply here with your one-shot in it, but to keep the thread cleaner, do it in spoilers regardless of it's size. After that, everyone will have until 11/02 to post their one-shots, otherwise the participant will be disqualified. The time limit for the fics to be judged will highly depend on how many participants we get and the size of their works, but a minimum of 10 days deadline is to be expected. And as I'm talking about the judgement, I'll be asking now: I need help with this. Even if I'm pretty confident when it comes to this kind of stuff, I feel like it'd be fairer with everyone if there were 3 judges. So, if anyone is interested in helping, please send me a PM so we can talk more about it. Now, a competition gotta have a prize. The winner will be awarded with a steam copy of any visual novel up to U$10. I know it's not much, but with this you can get your hands in a novel such as Planetarian or the infamous Hatoful Boyfriend by simply writing a good fanfic. I'll be answering any doubts as soon as possible, so feel free to ask anything and also comment on what you think about the competition.1 point -
Looks like the bottom of the page broke again. Anyway, scouting ticket didn't give me anything but I am up to 50 gems (would have been 55 if I didn't Yolo for the first years). The new story chapter, Rin was being so cute <3 oh, and love her "Hoshizora" hoodie1 point

Kuki is not only strong, his voice is godlike too and contributes to his great charisma. (same seiyuu as Archer but his acting is even better in Ayakashibito imo)1 point

Love Live! School Idol Festival Thread
phoenixfyre2552 reacted to Ceris for a topic
This video was posted on Reddit I would totally make one of these if I had a way to record on my phone... She kinda makes it a little more personal than I would like, I would try to go pure informative. I could use bluestacks though, anyone think it would be worth the time to try and make a video like this for the OP? I could even make either a section at the beginning or a separate video saying what Love Live is, before explaining the game. On a side note, after I posted that link, I noticed in that person's name, if you take off a few letters in the beginning and end, it spells Ceris, who am I kidding, I made this video, see Maki~chan, I am female~ Edit: I tried using Bluestacks, I'm getting a white screen when launching SIF, I see the main menu for like half a sec then as soon as any type of animation begins (the press start to play), it stays white screen no matter what. Notifications appear though, like the prompt to start the download.1 point -

Whoa whoa whoa! Are we calling PS2 games retro, now? My heart can't take this. I think Dark Cloud 2 aged decently, but 1 did not. 2 has the characteristic Level-5 cel shading art that looks rather nice, and it doesn't play all that badly, either. A lot of the side stuff was really fun. I liked building villages and everything related. That golf minigame, though... About your hate of Teddy in P4, is that with the Japanese dub or English dub? I'm not sure I like his Japanese voice as much as the English one. Actually, Atlus did a pretty great job of the dub overall, although Rise can be a bit sketchy sometimes. I'm very fond of P3 and P4 games, though. They're probably my favorite JRPGs of the 3D era, actually. Enough to beat P4 twice and watch Giant Bomb's endurance run twice (if you haven't seen that, it's basically an LP made by professional journalists, but are funny as hell and often dumb as a brick). I think they can continue to hold up over time. I also think Atlus will continue to remake and milk the hell out of them. Can't wait for P5, I'll have to finally get a PS3 for it. Edit: Also, figures you'd like P3 so much more. It has a much bigger chuuni vibe to it. I loved the hell out of Grandia 2 when I first played it on the Dreamcast. The battle system enraptured me. It was very tactical and engaging, while being fast paced with a standard JRPG interface. The only problem was that it was too easy. They built this fantastic battle system but had very few interesting encounters. Grandia 3 upped the difficulty at least a little bit, enough to make the battles much more fun on average, in my opinion. But holy balls, did the story and dialog take a nosedive. I think G2 can hold up. Since you're counting the Wii, can we add in Xenoblade? It almost feels like cheating though, it's just a few years old in the US. Still, I enjoyed it the most out of any of the Xeno games. I never got into the stupid pseudo-philosophical and religious masturbatory nonsense they served the player, and I felt like Xenoblade actually touched on some of those subjects in a more level-headed manner. One of the few JRPGs with a battle between two age-old rival races that actually handled the subject matter in at least a somewhat interesting way. Skies of Arcadia - Phenomenal, I loved it to death. Exploration was a joy, and I loved kitting out my kicking rad airship with new gear and a custom crew. And I always like base building systems when present. That said, I actually didn't like the ship battles too much. They just kind of felt like mediocre puzzle games, and they weren't dynamic at all. Once you found a solution for a fight, you just stuck to it and it would never fail. Going back a generation, Front Mission 3: I haven't actually played any of the other FM games. I'd like to some day, but FM1 and 2 are suuuper dated, I just can't go back to it, and people tell me they're necessary for understanding 4 and 5. FM3 is a really great SRPG, though. I liked the focus on ranged battles, the customizable mechs, the different health values for different parts, etc. Very interesting strategic experience that felt like it had more depth than most SRPGs. Suikoden 2 - it's a (hidden?) classic. Tells an interesting war story with a main villain you love to hate. Star Ocean 2 - The PS1 JRPG I sunk the most time into. I'm typically not a huge action RPG fan but this one really pulled me in. I'm not even sure why, looking back on it, it's not terribly special. But I really liked exploring the world, leveling up all the oddball skills, replaying it to recruit alternate characters, and breaking the game in the secret dungeon. And back even another generation, Super Mario RPG - I didn't have a SNES when growing up, only a Genesis, and played no JRPGs until FF7 on the PS1. So it took a while for me until I got into emulation before discovering it. But when I did, I loved it. Very fun battle system, an interesting way to incorporate Mario elements in an isometric JRPG, and a plot that was surprisingly decent. May be my favorite SNES RPG. RIP JRPGs, the genre was good while it lasted. Sucks that it's practically dead, now.1 point
