Are you sick and tired of people changing their avatars to something completely unrecognizable for no reason whatsoever? Then you're in luck, because this script will let you decide what avatars you want people to have! Here's an example that is completely unrelated to the reason why I decided to make this incredibly simple script: And here's how it's done: Step 1. Install a userscript extension in your browser. If you're using Chrome you want Tampermonkey, if you're using Firefox you need Greasemonkey (I think, I don't use FF). Step 2. Create a new userscript and change it to the script from this pastebin:4 points

Grand Theft Auto V PC Release
LinovaA and one other reacted to solidbatman for a topic
GTAV releases pretty soon, and I wanted to know if anyone else was planning on picking it up. I had a blast in GTA Online with some friends on my PS3, and if enough people want to, we can start a crew and forcibly spread Visual Novels to the West by holding up banks, killing mofos, racing, and of course, doing heists. Anyone interested?2 points -

Random thoughts: Love Live titles make no sense It's not uncommon to hear people say Japan is bad with foreign languages. It seems that the Japanese have this axiom of randomly pushing foreign words into whatever song they're trying to sell and people always enjoy it. Yet if you analyze pretty much any song that's mass produced, especially in the idol industry, you'll quickly realize how dumb most of the titles really are. So let's go through a bunch of Love Live songs and take appart their titles to see which make sense and which don't. Note I'm only going to go over the best album songs, I may do it again for individual singles but I cba right now. Also this is not meant to bash Love Live, just the fact that Japan doesn't have a knack for naming and it really shows. Lastly I could nitpick at more songs for several other reasons, but I decided to simply stick with how poorly the titles are written. 1. Yuujou no Change Starting things off great with a title that doesn't know if it wants to be Japanese or English. Yuujou means "friendship", so far so good right? But then you have "no". "no" in Japanese is a posessive particle, so if you were the apply the posessive rules it would either be "Change of friendship" or "Friendship's change". Wait what? That doesn't make any sense does it? Yep, because the "no" is not a Japanese no, it's the English negation particle "no" So Yuujou is Japanese and "no change" is English. Friendship no change... yep, still broken. The goal here was to go with "Friendship doesn't change" which in Japanese could simply be "Yuujou kawaranai" (doesn't that sound 10 times more appealing?), but all they mustered was broken English grammar. 2. Baby Maybe Koi no Botan Again trying to shove English where it doesn't make any sense. "Koi no Botan" simply means "Love's button" or "Button of love", which sounds fine since botan is a borrowed word in Japanese. But why the hell is "Baby maybe" there? It makes no sense. There's no way to fit it in the title and make sense. "Baby maybe, love's button". What the hell does that even mean? The song only ever mentions "baby maybe" twice and it's in the background while they're going "Zuttooooo~" Japan pls. 3. Sweet&Sweet Holiday This one is completely in English so there's no need to take it appart. Now why are you using sweet twice? Couldn't it just be "Sweet Holiday"? Wouldn't that make twice as more sense while using half the words? How is something sweet and sweet? As Maki would put it: イミワカンナイ 4. A-NO-NE-GA-N-BA-RE! W-Why? Why all the caps? Why the dashes? What's the point? For those who don't know, the proper spelling would be "Anone ganbare" "anone" is a set expression that means something like "listen here" in English, basically a call out for someone to pay attention to you, and "ganbare" means "do your best" Why not just use the proper spelling? Stop making things more complicated for us. 5. Aishiteru Banzai For starters, "aishiteru" means "I love you". I'm sure you're all familiar with the word "banzai" and how it's used, so how does it make any sense to put it after this sentence? Do you ever picture yourself saying "I love you! Banzai!" to your loved one? Yeah, me neither. And worst of all is that they just nonchantantly say "banzai", it's not even your average "hooray!", it really doesn't make any sense for it to be there other than to make the lyrics' metrics work. This is a horrible habit that Japan has. 6. Daring!! This one is probably the worst offender. Unless you're familiar with the song, you've already most likely read the title wrong if you're an English speaker. It's supposed to be "Darling", but "Darling" in Japanese would be ダーリン (Daarin), but that's if you're spelling it with kanas! If you're going to use latin letters, why the hell do you not spell the word "darling" properly! And even if you were to transcribe kanas, there's no "G" at the end! This title is the worst misspelling in Love Live history. I'm so sorry you were forced to be part of it, Maki. Now, out of all the songs in the album, 6 poorly titled ones isn't a horrible number, but really there was no reason for this. I really suggest you start focusing on proper Japanese titles, Love Live.2 points

solidbatman's Mega Big Ultra Contest
Quark reacted to solidbatman for a topic
GIANT Contest ver. 3.2 Do you have what it takes? Greetings boys and girls and Ren. I am solidbatman, and for the next 8 weeks, I will be your worst nightmare. Think you're strong? Think you're smart? You are wrong. You are worthless, and I will be proving it to you through various cruel, torturous activities. In the past, I forced people to sing for me, draw, write fanfiction, search for hidden text. Many gave up. They were weak and evolution shall take care of them. Some, however, stayed strong, and rose to the top. I was defeated, and I was forced to pay them in Visual Novels. I AM BACK FOR REVENGE Here is how this competition will work. Every week, for the next 8 weeks, I will issue a challenge. Complete the challenge in a certain amount of time to receive points. The person with the most points at the end of the 8 weeks will win a big big prize. REMEMBER: You will have a chance to win as long as you participate in every week and put in effort. Drop out and miss multiple weeks, and you wont stand a chance. No one can clinch the competition before week 8. Now, on to the prizes. Just what might you all be winning? -ef: A Fairy Tale of the Two -Deardrops -Cho Dengeki Stryker -Infinity Plus full series -Pancake Mix And there will be more prizes added! OriginalRen has agreed to assist me in supplying prizes, direct from Japan. More info to come Now then, with that out of the way, let us move on to doing our first challenge. As a reminder, all off topic talk, or posts that are not an entry must be placed in spoiler tags. This is for my own sanity when I am reading through posts, adding up points. Points Tally Without any more delay, your week one challenge. WEEK 1 To start things off, just reply in this thread saying you wish to take part in this contest. All contestants will receive 5 points. Responding within 24 hours will start you off at 6 points. End Date: March 13 WEEK 2 Hi there! I'm not dead, as close as it felt. I am using what strength I have right now to give all of you a Week 2 message. Your challenge this week will separate the contenders from the pretenders for this week is a drawing challenge! Your challenge: Draw Batman into the Visual Novel of your choice The drawing does not have to be incredible, or even good. Just submit some sort of drawing of Batman in a visual novel to receive points. 5 points to everyone who posts a drawing by March 18th. 3 points for everyone who posts between March 18th and March 22nd. An extra 3 points to the person who posts my favorite work! WEEK 3 This past week we have learned, not all of you are the next great artist. In fact, almost none of you are going to be a Rembrandt. That said, good job to all of you for taking part. I ended up not being able to decide who to give the bonus points to, so I'll give them to both Beato, and Stray Cat. Good work you two! Now, on to this weeks challenge. I know not all of you are good artists, so this week, we'll get creative in a different way; writing. This week, your challenge, is to write a story about the dragon Gangamamer and its adventures in the land of Visnovella. There are no other guidelines, no other requirements. So for the love of god, don't ask. Just write. You will lose points for asking a question this round. WEEK 4 Ahhhh, I love how much effort you guys put into this. And no one fell for my trap of asking questions despite me not spelling out how much this past week was worth. Now to make you all super mad. There are no bonus points for week 3. Just 5 points for anyone who took part. I'll get around to points sheet ASAP (I have some papers for school to write first but I do have someone working on it for me). Now this week, there are bonus points, so don't worry. This weeks challenge will weed out the last of the casuals. We've had many drop already, but I expect this week to really destroy the willpower of those wanting an easy contest. What is the challenge this week you ask? Write a song based off the story you wrote for week 3. That's right. This week, you are to write a song based off the story you wrote just last week. This is a basic 5 point week. Respond within 24 hours with a song and receive 6 points instead. As for the bonus, anyone who sings their song (no music required) and posts it for everyone to listen will receive and unspecified amount of points. The less people who do it, the more the bonus will be. WEEK 5 DAY ONE Hello hello, and welcome to the daily challenges. Each day, you will be issued a challenge. Completing the challenge will net you 5 points towards this glorious competition. Now, I know many people have dropped out, which is a shame. Though... if everyone drops out, I won't have to give this stuff away. Right, so we have a goal this week now. Isn't that nice? Your first daily challenge is as follows: Mario is easily the face of Nintendo, and arguably the most recognizable figure in video games. Who would you say is the most recognizable character in Visual Novels, and why? DAY TWO Time for another question. What do you feel are the 5 most important letters of the English alphabet? Just a heads up, anyone in this competition who does not take part in the day 3 challenge tomorrow, will lose 10 points. DAY THREE Those who do not take part in Day 3, will lose 10 points I also... am not really sorry for this at all. Up to this point, I have been very nice to all of you with your challenges. That ends today. Your challenge today, is to write a 150+ word story, without using the 5 letters you picked in Day 2. If you use any of the 5 letters you picked in Day 2, you will lose 8 points, and face an even worse challenge for day 4. Fear not though, I do rubber band things towards to end. So be sure to remain strong through adversity. For I will not allow you to face impossible odds. DAY FOUR Have fun with Day Three? No? Good. Day Four will continue my mean streak. Take your Day Three story, pick two more letters to remove that are featured in your story more than 3 times a piece, and rewrite the whole story without those newly removed letters, with real, English words. As a final stipulation, there can be no words that end in -ing. Again, find two letters in your day 3 story that repeats more than 3 times a piece, and remove them while rewriting the story to match as close as possible to what you wrote. And remember, no words that end in -ing as well. 15 point challenge. WEEK 6 There is no day 7. I screwed up the timing and was a day behind. A fact I did not realize until today. Oh well, that gave me more time to plan an even more evil challenge than the Day 6 challenge that was so popular. Congrats to suikashoujo or whatever your name is for winning the 10 bonus points. Day 5 was worth 5, and Day 6 5. Now then, on to week 6. Week 6 is another scavenger hunt! Except this time, you will searching my posts on Fuwanovel for 22 red letters. Once you gather all 22 red letters, organize them into a specific phrase that I have picked. Once one person gets the correct answer, the week will end. This week is a winner take all week for the points, 20 of them. Except with a catch. You all may work together and provide hints and directions as you wish. Be mindful though, only the first person to get the correct solution will receive the 20 points for the week. On top of that, if the person who gets the correct answer first sits outside of the top point totals on my score sheet, then the top contest scorers will lose 20 points. If the person who wins is in the top scorers, then they will simply get 20 points and have a large lead going into Week 7. The top scorers currently are: Suika flutterz vibrantblade kata rose ivanlegato Godspeed ladies and gentlemen PS: Seriously, stop complaining and asking questions. Zodai, you will receive your verdict tomorrow. Also awaiting a possible judgement; Noah_Crises for simply replacing banned letters with x's and other letters while leaving a key. Note: If this is solved within 48 hours, I will add another one this week.1 point -
Peter Payne, owner of VN publisher JAST and the J-List empire, made the following comment in their official forums: JAST's experience with RPGs JAST has released several RPGs over the years, including the Raidy series, Brave Soul, Aselia the Eternal, and most recently Yumina the Ethereal. JAST has said hinted before that the Raidy series did very well for them, and they seemed quite eager to work on Raidy 3, so I'd infer that it's not included in this assessment. Brave Soul was heavily pirated, as evidenced by the repetitive posts in the old forums asking how to save (which was explicitly outlined in the short paper manual that came with the game). The release of Aselia the Eternal was mired by issues, including a widely available fan translation patch, JAST's decision not to release a version with the original 18+ content due to concerns about the sexual portrayal of children, failure to pursue a Steam release, and the fact that by the time JAST got around to releasing it 8 years had passed and the game's graphics (640x480) and battle system were horribly dated. I previously discussed how Yumina the Ethereal's marketing was poorly handled, although eventually they did release a playable trial at least. Since Brave Soul was released 12 years ago and Aselia the Eternal probably didn't cost much to localize due to the existing fan patch (JAST worked with the same group for the official release), I presume JAST's statement is based largely on Yumina the Ethereal's sales. Seinarukana: JAST's most ambitious RPG license to date Synopsis Seinarukana follows the dimension-traveling adventures of Nozomu and his band of friends. The story opens in a typical high school in Japan. Nozomu's everyday life is shattered when the school is suddenly attacked by strange invaders from another world wielding medieval weapons and fantastic magics. Amidst the chaos he and others awake to supernatural powers that had long lied dormant--powers inherited from a previous life. When the dust settles the entire campus has dimension shifted, and the students find themselves stranded in an alien world. While at first Nozomu and his friends simply seek to return to their world, they gradually become entangled in a dimension-spanning intrigue that threatens the entire multiverse. In the process, they discover the nature of their powers, and memories of their former lives begin to awaken. Story and gameplay The premise is reminiscent of its prequel Aselia the Eternal, though it has lighthearted school comedy elements that more resemble spiritual successor Yumina the Ethereal. The gameplay system is an evolution of the strategic overland map movement and tactical combat found in Aselia the Eternal, streamlining leveling, adding greater complexity in the form of separate physical defense and magical defense, and introducing a large cast of playable characters with unique skills. Skills are awarded as map completion objectives, with faster and more complete conquest rewarded with rare and powerful skills, giving players incentive to master the gameplay. You can see screenshots of the gameplay on its VNDB page. Evaluation I've played through the entire game, and the gameplay is a blast. The story mixes typical high school comedy with a fascinating sci-fi / fantasy setting, but the blend is smoother and more convincing than Yumina the Ethereal, with the plot and setting gradually introduced rather than dropped in your lap halfway through like with Yumina. Unlike Yumina, there's no grind or random encounters, which I appreciate. Seinarukana is currently rated 8.4/10 with 151 votes on VNDB, ranking it #3 in untranslated RPGs below Eushully's epics Ikusa Megami Zero and Ikusa Megami Verita. English Release Insider information suggests Seinarukana is planned for a 2015 release, likely timed to coincide with Anime Expo in early July. Unfortunately, JAST appears to be heading for a repeat of the mistakes they made with Yumina the Ethereal: taking a high-caliber RPG, hurling it at fans, then expecting the game to market itself. RPGs require special marketing at a different audience Ask existing VN fans (JAST's typical customers) to buy an RPG, and they're going to whine that there's gameplay getting in the way of their story. RPG fans don't necessarily frequent VN sites, because they don't like VNs especially--they like RPGs. On top of that, when RPG fans are looking for RPGs to buy, they're looking for promotional materials that highlight the gameplay: gameplay screenshots, gameplay videos, and playable demos. Reviews are important RPG fans tend to read reviews before they buy, which means RPG review sites need to be engaged and persuaded to review these games. I never saw any reviews of Yumina the Ethereal on RPG sites, which was probably the #1 reason it didn't do as well as JAST had hoped. There's a huge potential audience for VN-style RPGs with strong gameplay, but it's going to take more effort to tap than JAST is probably used to. But if they're going spend the considerable resources to license a long high-caliber RPG like Seinarukana...why wouldn't they market it the best they could? Seinarukana is a Steam dream come true Seinarukana has to be released on Steam. Absolutely. Positively. If the game can be listed on Steam, priced affordably, and it gets noticed--the game will sell like hotcakes. I've played Seinarukana, and the gameplay is a blast. Steam users will eat it up. Censoring the H-content in Seinarukana will be no issue because there's hardly any to begin with. And with a censored version, sites like RPGFan and RPGamer should be willing to review the game, which will multiply sales. Getting these sites review copies before release, to boost pre-release hype, is a key aspect of proper marketing! My message to JAST Disappointing sales of your RPGs is your own fault. You're dropping the ball. Put some effort into the marketing this time around and you'll get results! You have talented people working for you on Seinarukana that know what it takes to market RPGs. Talk to them! Throw money at them and give them the authority to do what it takes to make this release successful! My message to readers It's outside the scope of this article to convince you that Seinarukana is awesome. You'll just have to take make word for it. Regardless if you agree, if you care about visual novel style RPGs then I have a message for you: JAST needs your help. They're at a fork in the road where they're debating if high quality RPGs are worth the effort of releasing. They don't realize they're sitting on a gold mine; all they see is a caved-in tunnel that is taking forever to clear. And if they don't dig down, they'll never realize it. I want YOU, the RPG fans, to help me tell JAST what they're doing wrong. Here's a pre-release thread for Seinarukana on the JAST official forums. Tell them what they need to do to reach RPG fans like you and me and make Seinarukana and future awesome RPGs a success. Do you want to see shining gems like Eushully's Ikusa Megami Verita in English? First we have to convince Japanese developers like Eushully that there's a market for these games in English, and we have to convince localization companies like JAST that translating a 100hr epic like that isn't going to bankrupt them. I leave the sword in your hands, RPG fans.1 point

Compressing blog posts
Darklord Rooke reacted to Nosebleed for a topic
If there is an option for this, I can't find it. I just finished writing a really long post on my blog and I noticed that the blog software on the forum doesn't really compress the posts when you're just viewing the main blog page, it always shows the entire entry no matter what. So the "read full entry" option at the bottom is kind of pointless since it always shows the whole thing. But the major problem is really that with long posts it becomes a huge drag to scroll through blogs if you want to read previous posts, it's a little messy. I was hoping that there was a setting you could use to have posts stop after a certain point on the main page so they don't become insanely long. You could then use the "read full entry" option if you want to read the whole thing, as it should be.1 point -

Sakura Spirit Writing Critique - An Introduction
Gibberish reacted to Darklord Rooke for a blog entry
For those that don’t know, the other day some villains ambushed me and they gave me a task – to produce a writing critique of Sakura Spirit. This, they say, will entertain the masses and provide much mirth for those on Fuwa. It is a task I went into full of hubris. But first some background. Sakura Spirit is an English developed Visual Novel with extroadinarily pretty art, and yet it suffers from a horrible reputation. A reputation even more repulsive than those terribly translated, doujin, nukige abominations Mangagamer spews forth. The mere mention of this title produces hisses and insults from nearby people, reactions you’d usually only hear if you gatecrashed a teenagers party. Dressed in only a bathrobe and slippers. Shouting that it was past your child’s bed-time, you were here to collect them, and had anybody seen them? There’s very few people or institutions that could release something so aesthetically beautiful only to produce such disgust in the public, and my money’s on the Government. And so I went into this challenge supremely confident, reassured by the knowledge that the Government has never done anything right. I would be gifted a game that was completely horrid, and I would need to apply only a minisule amount of brainpower to produce a detailed critique. How misplaced a feeling this was! But onto specifics, why the uproar over such a beautiful looking game? Well, there’s 4 reasons: there’s no plot, it’s a game about sex but there is none, it’s an English developed visual novel with Japanese words and phrases sprinkled everywhere, and the writing is horrid. So the only positives to the game are the pretty art, and the fanservice. But surely gamers are a smart species, they wouldn't fork over good money just because of some large, oil-smeared boobs, am I right? That would be like watching NASCAR for the crashes, or watching a foreign film to laugh at the funny mistranslations in the subtitles. But I was wrong. Over 100,000 people own Sakura Spirit, and that’s more than the entire voting population of Aruba. And most of them appear to have thoroughly enjoyed themselves, if the review system on Steam can be taken at face value. Which it can’t. But here’s the thing, if a small indie studio can sell over a hundred thousand copies just by including some nice art, and sprites with reflecting boobs, then there’s no incentive to provide a decent story or good writing. Writing takes time, and good writing even more so, and if there's little monetary reward to head down that path then people won’t. But unlike Winged Cloud, Sekai Project is a production studio and DO have a professional reputation to maintain. In response to the uproar they made some apologetic sounds and issued some vague promises on Reddit. They said they asked Winged Cloud to “improve the grammar and writing” and have since “changed their QA procedure”. But despite their revamped QA procedure the situation repeated itself with Nekopara, another awfully pretty game that was obviously translated by the Government. This didn’t bode well for their first promise. So over the next few weeks (Fuwa time) I will analyse the game’s writing to find out how much it has improved, and what writing issues are still included in the script. Obviously they wouldn't have been able to shoe-horn in a plot, or much additional character development, but what have they improved and how bad is the writing in its current form? Is Sakura Spirit finally worth purchasing or is it still nothing more than a glorified erotic CG gallery… with no actual porn? That’s what we’ll find out.1 point -

When I saw the name... I was just like... no way. Then I heard it... I was entirely pleased. I love reorchestrated songs.1 point -
I mean that in Japanese, they tend to state topics without the same frequency as in English. For example, if you compare a translation with the original Japanese, the word 彼 probably won't appear nearly as often as "he" and "him" do in the translation. Meanwhile, somebody's actual name is said with much greater frequency. It is accurate, but this use of の can be a little more complicated. First of all, the gerund (-ing) form of a verb doesn't have only one function; it can be used to form the present perfect tense, which describes an action that is ongoing, as your translation does, but it can also be used just to make a verb into a noun for other purposes. For example, "I like walking" doesn't have anything to do with the present perfect. Also, the particle の doesn't always refer just to the verb immediately preceding it, but often to the whole clause as well, which it appears to do in this case. A literal translation of it when used like this is "it is that..." For example, 彼は行かないの? = "Is it that he is not going?" whereas 彼は行かない? = "He is not going?" Bear in mind that the whole "it is that" can often be dropped or adjusted in English due to being unnatural and/or unnecessary. Tae Kim can probably describe it in better detail in the second part of this article.1 point

Worst anime/manga endings?

Mahoromatic (anime): confusing and and overly angsty even for what was supposed to be a tragic ending. Manga's was way better. Rurouni Kenshin (anime): kind of a double here where the TV show ended on a weak arc and no Jinchuu saga, then we have the movie Reflection which betrays every aspect of the series (one of them bastardizing the Jinchuu arc) and was so bad even the author declared it not canon.1 point -

You know, if I had a time machine I would just go back in time and redo all my terrible, terrible 10+1 scoutings... aka "all I got was the guaranteed SR and it was Kotori" @yoki: next event is cool Kotori and the event song matches the event SR colour I'm pretty sure1 point -

I kind of want to see a Rooke writing review of a Sakura series game. I think that would be more entertaining than the game itself.1 point

Good luck. Don't take the toxic community too seriously. A lot of trolls and everyone will flame you probably. But if you are lucky you can get some good teammates which tries to help you improve. But they are rare sadly.1 point -
Agreed, They are pretty good. Unfortunately, I am really far behind. ( The last issue I read was the pirate arc)1 point

Important: Domain and Host transfer
Heizei_koukousei reacted to Tay for a topic
I’m going to respond to Maef’s post here: http://forums.fuwanovel.net/index.php?/topic/8694-important-domain-and-host-transfer/?p=240053. I realize the topic has moved in other directions, but a promise is a promise! Hi maef. As I’ve told you before, I think you do a great job cutting to the heart of the issues, and while I think I’ve answered all of these questions here and there in several different posts, it’s worth the time and effort to collect them all here for your consideration. I look forward to your feedback/input. Here are the questions I’m hearing from you. Let me know if I missed any: What is the objective of Fuwanovel? If it’s still “Make VNs popular in the West”, what’s the new gameplan for doing so? In my (Tay’s) mind, how did dropping torrents affect the site and its goals? What new features are being planned to compensate for loss of torrents? How do you plan on getting new players? What is the objective of Fuwanovel? If it’s still “Make VNs popular in the West”, what’s the new gameplan for doing so? If we’re talking about site stationary, then yes, we’re absolutely keeping “Make Visual Novels Popular in the West” as our tagline : P. If we’re talking about site strategy, let me break it down into short and intermediate-term goals (I’ll leave the long-term goals for another post). Short term goals (6-8 months): A) Keep Fuwa relevant, B ) keep building the house, C) Foster/rebuild relationships, D) (possible) VNTLS replacement A) Keep Fuwa relevant: by building new features and increasing blog draw; optimizing searchability by a complete SEO overhaul; building a resource stream to commission special articles and projects; B ) Keep building the house: get the redesigns up (for all 3 sites); enhance Fuwa Academy content beyond lessons and lexicon; build the PC database to >250 games and get a good start on the mobile database; start getting patching guides up; we have 12 VN reviewers on the hub but I wont be happy until I get the last 2 “big” fish on my list; and finish my Fate/HA walkthrough : P C) Relationships: I’ve started forming partnerships with devs for the reviews team, but there are many more I’ll be approaching soon; outreach to TL teams whose patches were on front site + discussion about ways to help; prep resources for TL teams who want private boards on forums for their projects; outreach and joint projects with other VN communities (in discussions atm); evangelizing anime/FB groups and equal-exchange with bigger anime/manga/LN communities; D) I’m talking with folks like [need to get permission before adding name] about ways we can set up a VNTLS replacement Intermediate-Term Goals: E) Fan TL Academy; F) Fan Creation Academy; G) Special Japanese VN news program (Planning on these 3 projects is pretty far along, but as I haven’t had a chance to even bring them up in the LC, yet, I’ll leave it there for the moment) In my (Tay’s) mind, how did dropping torrents affect the site and its goals? I agree with you, Maef, that dropping torrents was a big deal and a threat to our appeal. I think the most important way that it affected the site and its goals from my perspective, is that it forced me to look at the profile of the average user who was going to stick around even after the torrents went offline, and figure out what keeps them coming back. I came to two conclusions: users who “stay” do so for at least one of two reasons: 1) community, or 2) ease of use. If you’re reading this post, you probably get #1 already, so let’s talk #2: People like Fuwa for how easy it is to access information and resources – and that went/goes for more than just torrents. If you take our walkthroughs as an example: they’re far-and-away the most popular English VN walkthroughs on the net. According to Google (I’ve been spending a lot of time with their keywords tools), our walkthroughs are used more and rank higher than GameFAQs for the vast majority of the “popular” VNs, and almost 100% of the less-popular VNs for which we have a walkthrough. Zaka’s TL updates are the same way. The Ongoing Projects board has been quite popular, too, as it allows people to easily find and track a project. The list goes on. If Fuwa can build products which hit on each facet of the hobby and make it as easy as possible to use, we’ll have staying power and we’ll have growing power. There were tons of other mental changes, too, like the benefits of stability. For me, personally, there was a huge mental shift when I realized that there is no longer the threat of unannounced, sudden destruction: I/we now have control of our staying power: owning our own domain and hosting means that as long as the bills get paid, we’ll be here in 12 months time, or in 2 years, or 3 years, etc. What new features are being planned to compensate for loss of torrents? Reviews hub, possible further takeover of VNTLS role, expanded and commissioned blog content, guest blogging program, possible auto-patchers for VNs (user gets the game, gets the patch from the TL team, downloads our autopatcher, and avoids a headache of installation) (this is just on the drawing board, though, so temper expectations), Fuwa Academy lessons + mentor program + lexicon for new players, mobile VN database, partnerships with big TL companies and big/small OELVN devs for review copies of games for FuwaReviews team, a smokin’-hot new front site design, expanding PC database to >250 of most popular VNs, patching guides for the most popular VNs, VN buying guide written by a new friend who wrote the reddit buying guide. Further down the road: Fan TL Academy; Fan Creation Academy; Special Japanese VN news program; expanded interactive fiction section How do you plan on getting new players? Fuwa Academy lessons and resources; complete overhaul of our site SEO to improve visibility; evangelizing and partnerships with anime groups (where the anime group’s corresponding VN has its own page with lots of info); providing lolis for clephas to sacrifice to the Old Gods; intermediate players via possible VNTLS replacement; Steam curation programs (includes promoting, for example, Meru’s list); I have a handful of other ideas but I think I left that notebook at school and I'm tired The last thing I'll say is that the reviews hub is a good illustration of how I personally function. I think Fuwanovel can be a hub of all the facets of the VN hobby, and that we'll be relevant because we are going to write/commission authoritative guides/articles, host our own stuff, and link and promote external groups/sites generously. I want to get to the point where Fuwa is so easy to use, that people want to use it to navigate the VN landscape just because we make it so easy. My brain got pretty tired writing that up, so I’m sure I missed some stuff. Let me know if an answer isn’t clear or not sufficiently comprehensive for you. I really appreciate your Qs and input, Maef. I see Fuwa as a hobby -- I give the site a lot of time, but that's because I have fun working on stuff with friends here. Yes -- I have a vision and roadmap of where I think Fuwa can go, but underneath all of those ideas is a foundation of fun and cooperation. I want to enjoy myself when I come to Fuwa, and I want everybody else to, too. We need to pace ourselves and make sure we're all having fun, and the improvements will come along.1 point
