I am a Background Artist/Colorist looking for a long-term project
starlessn1ght reacted to jackalico for a topic
Hey guys, I'm aware Fuwanovel is more of a place for writers than artists, but I figure there might be a chance some of you are currently looking for artists to help with your projects. As thus, I'd like to offer my help. Devving for a VN is something I've wanted to do for a while, and although I have no formal experience, I've devved for games and organized some groups before, so I'm not a complete stranger to teamwork. I'm basically looking to join any team who needs a background artist, as long as you have some decent concepts/pitches to start with. What I can do: -Backgrounds -Background/coloring for CGs -Various designs, from clothes to color schemes -Logos and promo art -Any themes -Any number of styles (I don't mind trying to match another artist's style) -Maybe some minor UI stuff? -I don't mind working with 18+ content What I can't do: -Anime/manga-style characters, I can clean/color anything from a sketch, but I have no idea how to draw anime for my life What I'm looking for: -A dedicated, long-term project -Decent writing -Hopefully a character artist to work with 0: Here's some of my work, for good measure: Larger View (still with crap compression) Larger View Larger View Some more, older pics: http://i.imgur.com/wYIW5JX.jpg http://i.imgur.com/9Mg1MOO.jpg http://i.imgur.com/w3Ykl4E.jpg http://i.imgur.com/t57dQG8.jpg These are all relatively quick pieces, nothing more than a few hours each. I can do more detailed work, but generally opt not to, as I'd rather be able to draw more varied pictures. Anyway, I think that's about it? I don't mind working on any kind of project, as long as the ideas sound cool and not overly cliche. If you want to get in touch with me, feel free to either leave a reply here or send me a PM. (And if you prefer to chat, I can PM you my skype.)1 point -
Are Visual Novels readers/players a niche?
Darklord Rooke reacted to InvictusCobra for a topic
Well, I can see where you're coming from and I think you stated valid points. However, I disagree that movies and books can do the same thing as VNs. This is just my own perspective and experience, but here is why I prefer Novels to reading books (I don't read books, unless they are mandatory for courses) and to cinema (nowadays, it's like books; if I don't have to watch one for college, I watch one like... once in a blue moon): Disclamer: This is my opinion, not facts nor dogma. If this doesn't apply to you, that's fine. This is all based on my experience and yours might be different. 1. The array of choices available: In Visual Novels, you can decide which character you want to get closer to. While it is like books or films, where the options are bound to what the writer gives you, I usually find that Novels give you more proximity to the cast and their stories, causing a bigger attachment, This ties in with the power of choice in terms of Bad Ends. In films or books (if it's not a "your own adventure" book), everything is linear in the sense that you merely watch and don't participate in the story. In most Novels, you have to make choices which can have far reaching consequences in terms of the story; for example, choosing A over B might cause a Bad End, thus leaving you with a feeling of having screwed up, being responsable for the character's misery and outcome. 2. The product of many mediums One of the main things that sets Novels apart from books in my opinion, is the combination of many tools to create something more. Having a CG to help visualise what is happening and the character's expressions causes bigger empathy and emotional reaction from the reader. Secondly, having music which was purposely produced for those moments helps the experience, it creates a different reaction on the reader than if you were just reading words on a sheet of paper. Finally, the voice acting helps the reader in terms of attachment to the characters. By actually verbally expressing what is going on and how they are feeling, more impact can be caused with a scene or moment. 3. How a big a time investment is necessary Now this one is more directed at films and shows, as books can be as big as a Visual Novel or even bigger, and might have more chance to start a saga/continuity than a single Novel. In a film, you get on average two hours duration. This is enough time to cause an impact on a person, and even make it a memorable experience for the viewer. The average Visual Novel has a duration of 10-30 hours of reading (using VNDB criteria and not accounting for the reader's reading speed), which allows for longer interaction, more exposition, more moments to share and bonds to make, things that intend to nurture the Novel-Reader relationship. This will allow for a more developed and fundamented story and characters, which enhance the experience and how attached the reader is when he reaches the end of the Novel. These are a few that come to mind.1 point -

Yakushi Ryouko To be blunt, Ryouko is a sub-heroine, so there really isn't much to say about her. Her path quality is lower, the details are less involved, and the drama is so mild you almost have to ask yourself if it even exists. Despite this, she is a fairly cute character, and she does fill the 'adorable kouhai' slot nicely. Fujimiya Shione This path, in terms of quality and nature, is something of a hybrid of Shizuku's and Reina's. Similar to Reina's, it is an osananajimi's path, with the assumption of past relationships and the reliance on them to form the protagonist-heroine dynamic. However, at the same time, it also possesses the kind of depth of introduction and character development that made Shizuku's path so satisfying overall. It makes sense that you have to have played at least one of the previous paths to access this one, when you consider the quality of this path. That said, I think a lot of you will be a bit shocked at how their romantic relationship gets started, so feel free to look forward to it. A few comments. This path and Ouka's are set on a story branch that is separate from the previous three, which has a slightly more intense focus on the fantasy element than was the norm in the main story of the other branch. Because of this, the two paths that follow feel a bit less like charage paths, which should be satisfying for those who prefer the more intense experience that came from Tasogare no Sinsemilla, though it still doesn't reach those heights. Ouka (True Path) Ouka is... a complex character. She has a number of roles: ghost, advisor, armchair detective, confidante... but in the end, she is the true heroine. Ouka's path is... the most complex and 'complete' of all the paths, with the most powerful emotional impact. The first half of Ouka's path alone is as strong as Shizuku's or Shione's paths as a whole, and the second half (started from the title screen) is easily the densest drama in the entire VN. That said, all of the drama is intensely personal. There is no element of 'save the world' or 'cut the ties of an ancient, dark fate'. Rather, this is a romantic story, focusing on the relationship between two people who are as close as it is possible for two beings to be. All the aspects of the protagonist's ability (including what is only hinted at in the others) is revealed. In addition, the hidden truth about Ouka is revealed, which is never even really touched upon in the other paths (deliberately). This is the only route I cried for, and it is worth playing this VN solely for this path... Final thoughts First, a few things I left out above. Ouka's route has two endings. One is an Tsukihime/Akiha-style 'normal' ending and the other a 'true good' ending. Despite the fact that I raved about Ouka's path above, I do have to say that if this had just been a normal romance between normal people, I probably wouldn't have been so into it. I'm a fantasy freak, and I love out of this world romances. A major flaw of the story is that there is no ending where Michitaka uses his ability as part of a career (it would be really easy to do so, and it would be interesting as an ending), and most of the heroine endings other than Ouka's left behind a definite feeling of incompleteness, despite the H-filled after-story 'fragments' you can access from the flow chart. A major advantage to the way they construct the flow chart is that you can access the extra scenes along the way that enhance the story... or you can just live with the characters' casual mention of the events that happen in those stories. Little things like the protagonist's first meeting with his best friend's little sister, and certain people's reactions to Ouka are in such scenes... so it can be a good idea to look at them. At the same time, this is a VN of respectable length, so you might feel that it is better not to do so, due to your own personal time constraints. On the whole, this is a good VN for those who like fantasy, and - while this is no Tasogare no Sinsemilla despite having the same writer - it is still a well-written narrative.1 point

Genre: Turn-based RPG (would like to add in a strategy element) Story: It would be set in a fantasy world where humans and a race of summoners who can enslave summoned people and beings with coercion spells are at war, involving the dozens of other races also present. The main protagonist is a slave-soldier summoned from Earth by the non-humans and transformed by his summoner into something greater than human. She ends up taking part in raids on human territory and various other military actions, all the while trying to come to terms with the new reality of her existence as a slave bound by coercion spells. The first part of the story would be focused on her efforts to master the skills necessary to live in her new world and free herself from her summoner. The second stage would involve a mass slave uprising and an escape from the territory of their masters. The third stage would involve the establishment of a nation in unoccupied lands with the protagonist as military dictator, and the expansion and solidifying of power (economic and military). The fourth stage would involve all-out war with the slave-masters and an ongoing conflict with the human nations on the other side. Game Mechanics: Obviously, the first part would be party-based combat and exploration of a world with an overworld map. In addition, making a system where the protagonist spends her time trying to sneak past the eyes of the slave-masters in order to learn the magic she needs to free herself and gather allies amongst the other slaves would be an excellent addition. During the middle part of the game, I'd also like to add resource management, facility construction, economic management, and buildup of the military to the gameplay, along with at least some form of strategy (I thought of a chessboard-type overlay map where the protagonist can deploy parties of generic soldiers produced by her training facilities to fight turn-based battles against raiding parties, small armies, etc.). Permadeath would be present except for some story-vital characters, though even some of those would be able to die, changing aspects of the late-game story. Regular troopers would be able to gain levels, change troop classes (both through alternate training programs and advancement on their current class-type). Unique characters would possess their own unique classes or unique versions of existing classes. Strategic-level magic (volcano-summoning rituals, firestorms, etc.) would be available for a large cost for making the eventual invasion of human or slave-holder lands easier, at the cost of having to spend extra time building up the devastated civilian areas due to population and infrastructure damage. As an extra note: I've already written out a scenario outline, character descriptions, and a detailed setting for this, lol... so I would absolutely love to do this, but if I go with only my own resources, it would stop at 'just another ugly VX rpg with a better story than is usual' since I don't have the programming or artistic capabilities to go further, lol.1 point

Remember, I'm just one person (and might not be the typical kind) . But that's how it seems to work for me personally. I can't really imagine being with someone if I don't even know them well enough as a good friend yet. I use the term "Dating" a bit more seriously as actually being interested in a future relationship with them, not just 'testing' things out. Yeah~ I feel the same way. Once in a relationship, it's nice to be able to fully show how much you care without any possible boundaries being crossed that shouldn't be in a friendship. I think in the back of my mind somewhere.. that idea may be there too. I take the decision to be committed to someone very seriously as well... and it's probably what makes me hesitant to jump into relationships until I can see the potential for it to last (at least a long time I hope). I see little point in starting something that would last just a couple weeks or months.. it'd also just be really sad as well after investing myself into it.1 point

Chronopolis reacted to Nosebleed for a topic
Yuri visual novels in English are hard to come by. I'm not saying this is the greatest masterpiece of all time or anything, but it's quite the treat for my eyes and it makes me happy some people would want to create a proper girls love visual novel here in the West. I haven't played the demo yet, but it seemed to have quite the production value. The creator has worked on a yuri web comic before as well so it's nice to know they have some experience: http://www.smackjeeves.com/comicprofile.php?id=79991 Some extra info i forgot to mention: The game will be 9.99$ when released and it'll be all ages. It's been in production for a couple years and the money is mostly to pay for original sound tracks and programming.1 point -
