Mr. Meogii's First Recognition Post. Hello Guys ! Meogii here, bringing you your ever so loved members' highlight. Today we will be zoning in on Suikashoujo. She has been a member of our community for almost a year now and it pains me to see that the majority of us do not yet know what she's been up to. She enjoys singing, so much so that she has taken it upon herself to make song covers to go along with her music. I don't know about you, but I don't think I'd ever find enough courage to allow other people to listen to me sing. Be it in real life or over the Internet, such a feat requires confidence - something I'm sure Suikashoujo has in her great and pleasurable singing. Down below you'll find her latest video so if you like it, be sure to check out her channel for more awesomeness. From the community and myself, we wish you all the best regarding your future works. Oh boy, that brings me back to a great night about two years ago. My childhood friend and neighbor got totally wasted at a halloween party. She couldn't walk straight anymore, called me to pick her up and didn't want her mom to find out. So I had to go out at 1 or 2 am, carry her drunk ass to the bus stop and back to my room. There, she puked on my carpet and fell asleep on my bed. So I did the right thing, left the room and called her mom, who then came up with the perfect plan. Her mom carried her into the small tool shed next to my house, took her jeans, phone and wallet and left her in there sleeping. The next morning, my friend rang at my door for like half an hour and went home through the bushes, to avoid being seen. Her mom waited til evening to give her all this stuff back and explain everything. The moral of the story is: Don't ask your childhood friend for help, especially when he's an asshole. And don't barf all over my fucking carpet.3 points

Well, my first post like this was a success, so let's do it again, shall we? Great! Let's get down to the meat of this post. This was apparently the week of full versions, as 2 out of my 3 were full versions of songs I had already done. For example, the full version of Clear's OP, Garasu no Loneliness: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlNCfCjg5-o But sandwiched in between those two was a slightly more... ambitious project. This is probably my pick for the week in terms of quality and overall pride in my work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJ9RxxZPm1c And finally, the full version of a song that's near and dear to my heart. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeZg3t-EHGE That's it for now, hopefully I'll be back with more next week! Thanks for listening!3 points -
First Post and about this Blog
Zalor and one other reacted to Chronopolis for a blog entry
Welcome to my VN Blog! As for a why I'm making this blog: I've always wanted to do write-ups on VN's I read. I admire those reviewers who can see deep into all levels of the story. It's also those people I depend on to make sense of mystery of complex VN's like Subarashiki Hibi or Cross Channel. But varying levels of astuteness aside, I love to share with others this hobby of VN's and see all the peoples' different reactions. As for why I don't consider myself to be reviewing visual novels: I don't really set out to judge the VNs, I usually only do so if I feel confident about my understanding of the VN and the genre/design-space it is working in. As an aspiring hobbyist writer, I am interested in components of a story (themes, characters, setting, scenes) and how they are used to construct good stories from different genres. And thus, I am apt to focus on those areas. When a story's or route's setup interests me but the route doesn't come though, I tend to fill in the blanks and explore different possibilities. "A disappointing story is one with tons of possibilities.", I like to think. In that sense I can spend a lot of time on things that aren't even about the VN in question. If you have read some of the VN's I post about, or end up so in the future, or if something here catches your fancy, please do make yourself comfortable. Stay a while, relax, comment. You can expect about two posts for one visual novel a month. (Eeek! This writing business is hard!) That's a little slower than how fast I go through VN's, but I probably won't post about every VN play. PS: Feedback is welcome! Are you interested in this stuff? Should I put the tangents in a seperate "tangents" post? If no one wants to read it, I'm happy to stick on topic and focus on just the VN's.2 points -

Yuri Is Love, Yuri Is Life
TehRealOne reacted to Nosebleed for a topic
Yuri Is Love, Yuri Is Life A Comprehensive Guide On Yuri It wouldn't be a stretch to say Yuri is possibly the genre I find myself indulging the most in. One could even say I wish for a world where everyone is a female and they can make science babies. But as reality isn't that forgiving, I have to make do with fiction. But this post isn't about me (though it may or may not have been triggered by the fact I hit 10,000 posts today), it's about cute girls doing cute things other cute girls. I often find people either not liking or not finding any particular interest in yuri, but whenever I ask why exactly that is most just say it's either because it's just pointless fanservice or because they don't see the appeal of it, namely because they're of the opposite gender most of the time and can't really connect. But the world of Yuri is a big one, a really reallyyy big one and I'm someone who believes there's always a way to enjoy something, you just need to look for the appropriate material. I started out not being interested in yuri at all, absolutely 0 interest (in fact I remember even saying I didn't like it at one point), but through the proper channels I eventually came more and more in contact with it and now it's a dominating force in the media I consume and boy it sure feels great. My goal with this post is to try and explain most things related to the genre, debunking some myths and try and give some suggestions and provide example material to look out for if you have any interest. 1) Terminology Yuri vs Shoujo Ai I wanted to get this one out of the way as quickly as possible, some sites like to have these two terms next side each other as if they're meant to define different things. But I'm not one of those people that believe in this redundant separation so let's get this out of the way: Shoujo Ai is not a real thing. In the websites that use these two terms, the main and absolutely arbitrary definition is that Yuri is meant to tag works that involve more physical, often sexual (on MAL and VNDB the Yuri tag is only used when there's hentai involved) works and Shoujo Ai is meant to describe more romance, less sexual focused series. But this causes a lot of confusion and it deteriorates the original meaning of the word Yuri, giving it a sexual nature when that was not its original intent. In Japan, fictional works involving homosexuality between females is either called Yuri (百合, "Lily") or Girls Love (ガールズラブ, gaaruzu rabu). Shoujo Ai as a term in Japan is not used with any of these meanings and instead tends to denote pedophilia (actual or perceived), with a similar meaning to the term lolicon. The term Shoujo Ai was coined in the West after the spread of Yuri in 2000 and it picked up some of the connotations for one reason or another and now it's actually used to separate two genres that were always the same thing to begin with. Yuri was never intended to imply sexuality, this notion comes from Western ideals and the annoying existence of the term Shoujo Ai which still needlessly confuses some people. Yuri is simply love between two girls. Nothing more, nothing less, there's no implications that are meant to come with it, it's simply meant to describe that the work in question has lesbians and it's redundant with Shoujo Ai because of that. I'd really like for this ridiculous separation to disappear in these websites, it creates needless stigmas associated with the genre and more often than not I've found myself mentioning the Yuri genre and people thought I was automatically talking about 2D lesbian porn. For works containing sexual scenes, why not just use the hentai tag that most websites (including VNDB and MAL) already have, why do you need the creation of an entirely new term that completely changes the meaning of the original? And for those that advocate that Shoujo Ai is meant to imply a more toned down less explicit relationship, well that's why the Subtext tag exists! (see below) So next time you talk about Yuri or someone mentions Yuri, know that they're likely not automatically talking about porn, and the next time someone mentions Shoujo Ai, tell them they're a horrible human being Subtext Subtext or Undertone are words often used to describe works in which the Yuri in itself is not explicit but rather implied. (once again making the Shoujo Ai tag pointless). There's variying degrees of this and it's one of the more subjective tags out there. While there are works that really push the Subtext tag such as Yuru Yuri (hell the yuri is even in the title here), others are incredibly mild things that more often than not require the viewer/reader to make the connection in their heads. A lot of slice of life shows like A-Channel or Kiniro Mosaic thread the yuri line very thinly by often having one of the female characters be overly clingy or react in embarassed ways in front of their supposed love interest. Subtext provides a good deal for people who are not looking for intense and exaggerated interactions but rather more mild things. And it also allows for the yuri fans to have all of their wild fantasies and ships (see below) while at the same time not overwhelming the viewer with yuri content. A lot of people pass off subtext as just friendship which again brings up how subjective this term can be, but it's safe to say that it's a rather nice compromise over using words like Shoujo Ai. Source: K-on! Shipping Shipping is universal, fan pairings have existed in fiction for quite a long time now. But I'm bringing it up here because, in my opinion, shipping is one of the better things about being a Yuri fan, and for a couple of reasons. For those who don't know what shipping is, it's essentially the endorsement of a romantic relationship between 2 (or more) characters (canon or non canon, typically the latter). So why is shipping awesome? First off, I'll talk about the general issue I see with heterosexual fictional couples: the male counterpart typically sucks. Male characters are often poorly and vaguely written in order for otakus to self insert themselves in them, they follow very generic traits and tropes most of the time and have girls flock around them like pidgeons searching for breadcrumbs. This is boring most of the time and doesn't make you want to cheer for the main couple. This is a problem in series targeting both male and female audiences. Male characters in series targetted at females also tend to follow all these prince charming tropes and they are generally speaking more uninteresting than the female lead. So how do you solve these problems? Well of course you throw the male protagonist in the trash and you put the female heroines together! This also opens endless possibilities for shows where there's an all-girls cast, you can just pair them together because f*ck rules and males. Secondly, female characters in general tend to be more well fleshed out either because the writer is a man and men typically like girls and so they pay more attention into making the girl a more interesting character, or because they're female and female writers generally have a better balance when it comes to writing characters. And last but not least, because it's cute! Note this is absolutely not to say heterosexual couples can't be cute, of course they can and there's hundreds of examples of it, but allowing yourself to ship same-sex couples really opens the doors for many, many fantasies. Source: Akagi and Kaga from Kantai Collection 2) Yuri In Different Mediums In AnimeAnime is, quite frankly, the worst medium to look for if you want a good source of Yuri material. There's only a few dozen series that are legitimately about relationships between girls and some of them are really fanservice-y. This is basically the most untouched medium when it comes to Yuri and this is where shipping and subtext really is prominent, lots of all-girls cast shows tend to have the girls be close to specific characters, implying a closer relationship between the two, and this of course drives the fans nuts, but the actual cannon material usually never goes that far. Most shows really don't go too far with Yuri for fear of poor sales since it's not the most popular genre so they find this to be a compromise. Source: Sakura TrickIn MangaManga is by far the best medium if you want to get a kick out of the Yuri genre. Due to less restrictions there's plenty of authors, both male and female, that create a plethora of works for all kinds of people that enjoy Yuri. There's cute 4-koma manga like Majyo to Houki to Kurobuchi Megane and there's serious more touchy stuff like Girl Friends. It's a medium that has a lot to offer and it's of course where all the yuri doujin artists typically make their fantasies come to life so you can enjoy your ships in a more vivid way. Source: Yuri Mekuru Hibi In Visual NovelsVisual Novels aren't as representative of the genre mainly due to the demographics they target which is primarely male, as well as the people who produce it, who are again primarly male, and thus most of the visual novels tend to be eroge focusing on cutesy characters with little to no story and a primary goal of showing h-scenes. This is not to say there haven't been some meaningful works before like Lonely Yuri and to some people even the SonoHana series is a fairly good Yuri series, but you know this latter one is still primarly a nukige no matter how cute it is. There's untapped potential here for Yuri to flourish, but sadly most of that potential is consumed by nukige. And hey I'm not saying I don't like my yuri nukige (I'm translating one after all), but this also limits the appeal of it to only those who enjoy such works. Source: SonoHana 3 3) Yuri Can Come In Many Forms One of the main misconceptions is that when someone mentions Yuri they automatically must mean that a series is primarly focused on a relationship between girls, and while this is obviously the general rule when it comes to romance heavy series, Yuri is really broad and can encompass all kinds of genres or even just be a secondary genre. The beauty of Yuri is that you can enjoy it while watching/reading completely unrelated series. Shows like Yuru Yuri or Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya introduce Yuri as a secondary plot device, thus not smothering the viewer with constant yuri but rather have the main plot progressing like any normal story would and have cutesy yuri interactions on the side. In manga, the world is basically limitless with lots of yuri manga not really focusing on the yuri but rather in everyday interactions while introducing some yuri on the side, and this is one of my favorite things to read, it allows me to enjoy relaxing manga while still getting my share of cute girls being cute with each other. Manga such as Saki even hardly focus on Yuri and just leave that as Subtext while focusing on the mahjong tournaments. And other series like Akuma no Riddle who are more open about the yuri in them can have other more important matters going on in them, it doesn't have to turn into a lesbian fanservice fest. This is what I hope people who aren't fans of yuri (yet) understand, Yuri is available in lots of ways for all kinds of people and there's plenty of series that can ease in the Yuri while having an overarching plot for you to enjoy, so one should always be open minded about this. Source: Shimaism 4) Yuri Romance Is Awesome Of course while there's a lot of series where Yuri is only in subtext form or only exists as a secondary plot device, a lot of Yuri manga is still centered around romance between two (or more) girls. As I mentioned before, one of the great things about Yuri are the typically more well fleshed out and varied casts of characters since female characters generally speaking tend to be more appealing to the public. But that's not the only thing. Yuri romance can easily be more intricate and fascinating to read about due to social implications and stigmas the settings of the stories often have, where sometimes the characters struggle with their sexuality and have to come to terms with it. It also allows for new layers when it comes to love triangles by having females and males involved at the same time, this makes so many stories more refreshing than your average heterosexual love triangle plots that most people are already used to and saturated from. A lot of people refuse to read/watch yuri romance because they can't relate since they're either male or straight females, but I believe this is a really poor way of looking at it. Of course I myself can't really understand what being a lesbian feels like, but that doesn't mean the goal of the story should be me self inserting into the characters or try to empathize with them, the story is the one that has to bring out the characters in a way that the reader can comprehend and form a connection with. Relationship problems aren't different whether you're straight or not, human beings regardless of sexuality can relate to human problems, so while I can't exactly comprehend what it feels like to have a different sexuality or be of a different gender, if the story manages to portray to me what the problem is and how it makes the characters feel, I'm going to empathize with them either way. Because a character crying over a broken a heart is the same whether their love interest is a guy or a girl. Because a character wanting to be together with someone else and to all those romantic things is the same whether they're a girl or a guy, because having society look down on you, regardless for what reason it is, is always a painful thing to go through for anybody. That's why when I read good Yuri manga, I don't have to worry about whether or not I can understand a girl's mind or how it feels to be a lesbian, because the story itself, if it's a good one, can deliver that to me in a tangible way so that I don't have to self insert myself in it. And this is why I've recommended plenty of Yuri manga to both guys and girls, straight and not straight, because it's a universal genre everyone can enjoy, it just takes an open mind to go about it. Good stories will always be good stories, they will never require you to be different for you to enjoy them Source: Citrus 5) Where To Start? I've blabbed on and on about Yuri so I think it'd be a nice way to finish this off by helping those who are interested in widening their horizons and where they should go to find Yuri content. Gurenka Part 1: Common + Elsrise's Route
Darklord Rooke reacted to Chronopolis for a blog entry
Introduction: Gurenka (vndb) is made by Escu:de, a VN company which has a fairly long history of games I've never heard about. I stumbled upon the title on vndb (The naked red-haired girl in the screenshots had nothing to do with it, I swear!). As a Chuunibyou story, I thought I'd try to make a new start to the genre. My previous experiences in Chuunibyou ran me aground with 11eyes -Tsumi to Batsu to Aganai no Shoujo, which featured lack luster school slice-of-life combined with endless battles I couldn't see a point to. I ended up dropping it fairly early on. As far as I can tell, Chuunibyou is all about embracing your the young teenager in yourself, the way some of us might have played "pretend games" with spies, secret organizations, and superpowers when we were kids. Chuunibyou involves combat where the circumstances of the fight fall secondary to the rolling emotions and the impact of the characters. Perhaps it because the characters themselves didn't make an impression but I couldn't get into the characters emotions during the 11eyes's fights. But that is fine, because Gurenka was a lot better in that regard. From the UI and title song, I immediately felt the atmospheric component of the game. From the the lack of visible characters on the title screen (it's just wall of hazy red), I also thought the story might be more tragic, with the atmosphere acting stifling at times. When you finish a routes, you can toggle a character display on the title screen. Such a different impression from that red wall! All in all, the system aspect is very well polished. It's great. Story: {Note: This post is made having finished the common route (or at least one side of it) and Elsrise's route.} In the first few hours, the presence of the supernatural is quickly established. Unlike VN's who start with a supernatural prologue and then fall in slice-of-life, the MC has the supernatural be, quite literally on his doorstep. It isn't long before Otherworld's start popping up. To be honest, when the protagonist starts invoking his powers and dealing with the situation, I was pretty left in the dust. I get what you're probably capable of combat-wise, but I don't know how it works, don't know how it solved the problem, don't know how I should think about it, nor where things are going to go from here. From there on, the VN is a flurry of conversations with the characters, investigating the strange events, and new outbreaks. The incidents exist very much in an on-going fashion, with them happening and being dealt with in a non-linear fashion. Now that I look back on it, most of the conversations were kept short and light. The few extended scenes themselves were varied, including a slice-of-life conversation and the conversation between the teacher and Saori in the hallway. I liked how that one stirred the pot of possibilities up while hinting at the two's characters. Good pacing overall. The latter half of the common route and beginning of the route had some important fights involving Kuon, Ryouji and Elsrise. I enjoyed how past confrontations often got brought up later in the story. Sometimes things that happened are explained, other times the characters mention things that were strange that they noticed. Doing so made the fights feel important to the story. I also think the middle part of the novel had pretty good flow. The relevant conversations, shifting of relations, and successive scenes all felt quite smooth. The final segment of Elsrise's route was one big showdown. Suffice to say, it was exciting. Kuon is badass. When the trio was pinned down in the city, despite it just being a fight (there was no huge plot build-up nor greater purpose they were fighting for), just the renewed danger made it feel like full-on crisis mode. Though, it was a bit hard to follow along with the Otherworld plot, as it wasn't obvious what was going to develop into the next source of adversity. The origins and objective of the "foe" probably weren't fully explained in Elsrise's route, though I expect them to be in Kuon's route. Plot structure: The overlying plot was Kuon staying by Kyouji's side until she sealed enough Otherworlds. As is common for stories with an initial nebulous overarching objective, its progress wasn't focused on much, other than Kuon noticeably becoming stronger as time went on. As Ryouji took towards sealing the Otherworlds, he quickly found himself caught up in much more immediate matters. Then, towards the end of the story, when Kuon breaks the news that this next incident might be the last, the reader, at least I was, filled with nostalgia/reluctance. This doesn't strike me as anything groundbreaking, but still, I can approve of a VN that can properly induce those emotions. There are a few BGM tracks that only play once or twice near the end which help set the different moods. There were a lot of little enjoyable things in the novel. Besides sealing the Otherworlds, there wasn't really a major concrete goal to work towards. This was pretty different from what I was used to. If I had to say, what made the plot feel moving forward was: 1. The protag gradually gaining an understanding of the Otherworld. At first he was just thrown into the fray, but later he makes observations and hears speculation and explanations of the other characters. [1] 2. The protag gradually learns more about Alsrise and Alize. [2] --Moderate spoilers-- [1] We first viewed the Otherworld as something that encroaches on the real world, and which attaches to (ie. haunts) a person. Then comes the hypothesis from Saori, that the Otherworld and the real world being two seperate worlds with can be crossed by making them overlap slightly. Then we get the explanation from Elsrise that the Otherworld is basically "masses of power" present all over the world, which reacts to people's strong emotions and manifests them. [2] At first we only know that she doesn't mind leaving the Otherworlds alone. Later on we learn that she is worried what will happen if too many are sealed and gathered in one place, instead of being allowed to dissipate naturally. Lastly, we learn about Alsrise's homeland and her nature, being the product of people's dreams/longings. --End of spoilers-- I think I understand how the Otherworld forms the plot in the common route. The idea is that a ill-defined source (the Otherworld) leads to seemingly very-different scenarios, but which have some similarities to each other once we understand more of the details. The way Gurenka does it seems like one approach to using supernatural phenomena to fuel plot events. I find it exciting how the nature of the Otherworld makes keeps the supernatural element relevant even for the human heroines. The humans routes will almost certainly focus more on the internal struggles of those heroines and how they are realized by the Otherworld. Presentation: At the start I mentioned Gurenka's polished menu and UI. Gurenka's one of the few novels which I've really felt how much the production values improved the experience (another that comes to mind is Eustia). The sprite and visual effects do a solid job in accentuating the characters motions. That, combined with the music, art, and sfx helped immerse the reader in the fight scenes. I did had some minor complaints for the fights, nothing too much. It might be me not being used to reading fight scenes, but some of the effects CG's didn't seem match with the text description. Also sometimes attacks from different people used the same cg, which was confusing and made it harder to picture the action. On the personableness of the opposing heriones I like how Gurenka handles potential enemies interacting and sharing the same space. What I mean is this setup can lead to some constrained and predicable scenes (Tsukihime and Fate/Stay night). In Gurenka, they bump heads occasionally, but it isn't drawn out, and so it ends up feeling very smooth and pleasant while still being believable. Though, the latter might have only been possible thanks to the broad-mindedness of Kuon and amiableness of Elsrise. Both kuon and Elsrise are in a position where they can further the main plot, without dumb quarrels (of course, if their quarrels had been story-worthy, that would have been a different matter). I thought the Elsrise was going to be kuon's direct enemy, with their history being somehow tied to that, but she ended up being an unrelated existence, which was unexpected, but nice. The story might have felt constrained and a bit of a rehash if Elsrise's route was just another side of the same quarrel. Kyouji and Elsrise's relationship development is a quite abbreviated, but their relationship is given an appropriate amount of along-the-way thought considering the space and the fact that the VN's plot does not hinge on their relationship. In terms of plausibility, Alize surprisingly succeeds in making the two's quick development more believable, but here also Elsrise's personality plays a large role. On the MC's lack of personality: Ryouji's thoughts, comments and reactions are sufficient to make the the VN scenes flow and be interesting, but he doesn't have a strong personality you can pin him down to. Having an MC with a stronger personality would let the reader appreciate him as a character when he interacts with the other characters. It would also might include his character development. As he gets closer to Elsrise, you can see most prominently in her reactions. I can't recognize a change in him, because I can't grasp him as an individual in the first place! A stronger personality might have also made his conversations with Saori more animated, with a back-and-forth dialogues instead of one-way conversations. On the MC acting and thinking like a middle school student: Ryouji being a bit of a kid actually interacts well with the characters and parts of the story: Kuon is doesn't mind having fun together with, and at the expense of, a teenager like Ryouji. Elsrise, at first, treats Ryouji as a noncombatant [3] (in that she has mercy on him), because of their gap in power and experience and because he is a human. However afterwards, she considers him properly and doesn't dismiss him for being a teenager. To be honest, Ryouji having the mind of a teenager didn't effect his ability to get things done. There were no tactical geniuses in this VN: he was just about as competent as everyone else. It just is clearly visible occasionally, such as during Elsrise's route. It would have been nice if he gave more thought and consideration to Elsrise, towards the individual she might be. Ryouji's human friends operate on pretty much the same frequency, so that fits too. The other thing that works well with his young self is the fights in Gurenka. While they have a sense of crisis and "oh shit", they don't have a grave seriousness like a more serious title would. Because of that, perhaps his teenager's fighting spirit is more appropriate than an adult's would be. I'll be sure to compare the emotions at play when I read other Chuunibyou VN's like Evolimit and Tokyo Babel. [3] リーゼ「これで分かったでしょう?あなたの所にいるあの化け猫の所にお帰りなさい」 俺に何の力もなく、くおんのおまけとしか思われていない。 だからこそこうして会話もするし、手加減もされる。 Closing words: So far it's been an enjoyable ride. The characters are impressionable. Kuon is a riot and occasionally a storm, Elsrise is admirable, Fumika is adorable when she is pouting, Saori is the intelligent deducer of the group: I will be pleased if her route reflects the intelligence she displays so far. The miko is by far the character we know the least about. She has almost no telling lines in the whole route. I hope she gets a long enough route and makes an impression later on. For the next route, I'm going to resume from the closest branch on the flowchart (flowcharts 最高!!!). Onwards to Kuon's(?) route!!!1 point -
Sekai Project uploaded "Sekai Project Monthly Wrap-up Episode 1" to youtube. It's a brief recap of their projects. Take a look: I'm a big fan of Nintendo Direct-style videos like this, where a game publisher talks directly to fans. I think it lets the company express some personality. I'd be interested in having JAST and MangaGamer do the same thing. How about you?1 point

This is why I watch what I drink. The last time I blacked out... I vowed never to get that drunk again. Worst feeling is waking up with a giant cut on your head, and your friends showing you videos of you dragging your face on the ground, and regale you with stories of how you kept trying to make out with one of your friends. Yeah... never again.1 point -

How does somebody not like Golden Boy? Come on, it is literally perfect in every way. Literally. Perfect. Be sure to watch the dub. I actively avoid anything that seems really bad, so I probably can't list the worst anime ever, but I can list some of the worst stuff that people actually watched around a decade ago when I most actively watched anime. The entire .hack series. Soooo fucking boring. It won't offend you or be super outwardly bad, but it will be impossible to last an entire season unless you're an inhuman monster. RahXephon, a trainwreck of a mecha anime that tried too hard to be Evangelion. Tenjou Tenge. How far can a series go on fanservice alone? Kinda far, but not far enough. Midori no Hibi. Some people actually liked this? whyyyy?? Ragnarok: The Animation. Because the terrible korean f2p MMO populated entirely by illiterate 12 year olds really needed an anime adaptation. Galerians: Rion. I only know this because it's based on a (terrible) ps1 game I played back in the day. It is the worst. Probably the objectively shittiest show on my list. Actually, I'm pretty sure you will actually like some of this stuff since our tastes differ so wildly. Also, Flutterz was right, free Flutterz!1 point

If you want to stay up to date with the videos, then just subscribe to the YouTube channel or something. The video was posted on Twitter as well as their forum ages ago Well, that's embarrassing. I did look around, but for whatever reason I wandered around their social media presence blindly and found nothing, rather than just searching for it. Anyway, thanks! On the topic of the video: - it's good to hear an expected rough release date for WEE Episode 02 (August). Here's to hoping they make it! - I hadn't heard about "No One But You" before, but it sure does look pretty: http://www.unwontedstudios.com/no-one-but-you/1 point -

What Makes a Bad Fan Translation?
MercyZombie reacted to Pabloc for a topic
Speaking of target audience, when it comes to VN translations, it can be roughly divided into 3 main groups. And each group has different standards for acceptable translation-quality: Group 1 - People who care about prose and want to experience VNs in a way that's as close to the original writing as possible. This group will -never- be satisfied with translations, even good ones, simply because translations are flawed by definition (I know from personal experience, since I kind of belong here ). The only reasonable option for them is learning Japanese, and well, they usually end up doing that sooner or later. For Aaeru, they are all "elitists" by default. Group 2 - People who don't mind the fact that translations will never be perfect. Some of them will probably try learning JP, but the majority is fine with reading translated VNs. As long as the TL is reasonably decent - they do have some standards. They will be fine with a bit too literal writing, not conveying some nuances properly, probably even with Ixrec's stuff. However, they won't swallow absolute thrash, with exceptionally awful writing, very poor TL-accuracy, and/or stuff that just doesn't make sense at all (that is - MoeNovel "quality", or current Monobeno project; not to even mention copypasted machine translations). And because of that, in Aaeru's vocabulary they also count as "elitists" (because, just like Zalor said - "Regarding Fan translation quality, only elitists really care."). Group 3 - People who simply don't give a damn about that weird thingy called "writing". They are fine even if they get only the very general idea of what is going on. They will swallow butchered KonoSora, they will even "read" Flyable Hearts troll-MT patch. Because they just don't care. They aren't "elitists". And Aaeru loves them. Group 1 isn't really an audience for translations. If anything, this group is a potential source of translations. Group 2 is an audience for decent (don't confuse with "perfect") TLs. Probably even some sub-par-TLs. But not for thrash-TLs. Group 3 is an audience for more or less everything, no matter how poorly translated it is (well, some people will avoid pure MT-gibberish, but they will gladly swallow everything else). The thing that I'd like aspiring translators to consider here, is that a decent TL can please both group 2 and 3, while thrash-TL not only is limited to group 3 alone, but will also deny everyone else from enjoying this particular VN in English (since in reality, we are limited to only 1 TL per VN).1 point -

Frontwing's New Game - Hatsuru Koto Naki Mirai Yori
yvetox reacted to AlexZandria for a topic
That's like saying prostitution is bad (in places where it's legal) because you have to be legal age + to work in the field, or that pornography is bad because you have to be 18+ to watch/preform in it. It doesn't make something inherently bad if it's an 18+ kind of ordeal even with a more "limited" legal audience. If that's what the niche is meant for that's what it's meant for and alienating a niche because it doesn't appeal to a wider audience doesn't do anything to fill the gap it was filling before. Not to say that an All Ages release is bad, but personally I don't like the idea of this being an All Ages release with a "planned" 18+ release. If it is planned from basically the start then the story was made with this in mind (even if they don't base a whole route on sex) it's basically like "we're giving you a working 'beta' or 'demo' and we're releasing the full thing later" instead they're calling it All Ages and 18+. In fact I think things like that aren't really good at reeling in the target audience because you're going to get a bunch of 12 year olds who play the all ages version, become obsessed with the game, find out there is pronz in it and then you're going to have an audience littered with young children. Which A) isn't the kind of person who can walk into the store and pick up a physical release of your 18+ games (which is, ahem, most of them) and B ) they're not the people with the money to be funding your company. So I don't see this "larger audience" as a positive, just a neutral, and I still don't see inherent badness in 18+ games. I just want to do cute zombies and lolis with skulls in their hair. That's all guys. That's what this is really about death + gore + sexy times.1 point -
For those interested, I'm in the process of writing an analytical article on Yume Miru Kusuri (in a similar fashion to my Narcissu, and Saya no Uta articles). So if that gets voted, then you can look forward to my spoiler filled analysis afterwards. Progress on the article has been on hold due to the fact that I have two large research papers to write for school. But I should hopefully be able to have the article finished by late June. (However it probably won't get published until a week or two after I finish it, since I have to revise it and coordinate with Zaka). That said, as much as I love Symphonic Rain my vote is on Yume Miru Kusuri.1 point

Teito Hiten Daisakusen
Chronopolis reacted to Clephas for a blog entry
First, for those of you who are fans of the Steampunk Liar-soft games, this isn't one of them. Rather, it is based on an alternative version of the 1920's where curses, magic, and monsters exist and the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 never happened. Japan has come away from its first major military contacts with the outside world as the victor over Russia, which is making its bloody transition from Empire to communist state. Garan, one of the two protagonists, is a tengu... as arrogant as tengu are by legend ('to become a tengu' is a byword for someone whose ego has gotten way out of hand, incidentally). He is arrogant, dismissive of mortal concerns, and naturally believes himself to be the ultimate creature in existence on the face of the Earth. In opposition, Kitora is a gentle girl who works selling meat-waste that is used as cat food door-to-door. Kitora is... a bit of an airhead who is very slow to anger and whose anger doesn't last long. Through a set of somewhat absurd events, she ends up as Garan's slave, which would have been a lot more hilarious if Garan wasn't quite so serious about it. Generally speaking, this VN resembles a cross between an occult intrigue story and a blown-out-of-proportion chuuni plot (though Garan's personality makes it difficult for him to fit in as a chuunige protag). Anyone who watched the 1980's and 1990's animes, such as Tokyo Megalopolis, based in the same era will recognize a lot of the basic themes... and they might possibly find themselves laughing at the way the game deliberately lampoons a lot of the tropes of said anime. Like most Liar-soft games made since the beginning of the Steam-punk series' reign of fame, this VN mixes deadly serious plot twists with frequent absurdity and overblown narrative tongue-twisters. As such, the narrative is something of an acquired taste. To be honest, I had an immense desire to hit something after a lot of the scenes in the game, and I frequently found myself disliking Garan, despite the fact that his personality traits would normally have made him an attractive character to me. Despite all that, for Liar-soft fans, this is pure VN-crack. What it lacks in some areas it makes up for in others, and the fact that is based in pre-WWII Japan makes it all the more fascinating as a window into the culture of that time (albeit one mixed with supernatural oddities like tengu, oni, and onmyouji). For most readers, the downside of the VN will probably be the protagonists, an unusual occurence - to say the least - in a VN with definite chuunige leanings. It goes without saying, of course, that this VN is higher on the reading-difficulty scale than most other VNs, and I wouldn't recommend this as something to take on on a whim. For those with an aversion to that kind of thing, there is rape in this VN, and it is mostly told from the woman's point of view (in fact, all the h-scenes are from the woman's point of view). This is just a mild warning. I've said about as much as I can say without spoiling the VN... so have fun. For those who are interested: The results of the poll are in, and the first VN for March's releases will be the new Minato-soft game.1 point -
Deardrops

Deardrops Licensed by MangaGamer Summary Shouichi was known as one of the ‘nobles’ of the violin world. Having started playing the violin when he was 3, he won the national violin competition when he was in middle school and went to Germany to play in orchestras. However, due to unknown reasons, he returned to Japan, gave up playing the violin and became a freeter. One day, he starts working at a live house and meets many other amateur musicians who are living their lives their own way. Together they will have to overcome obstacles in both their personal lives and as a band. To Shouichi, the live house is a new beginning in a new place… a new world which has opened to him when he thought that his future as a musician had closed. Ending Guideline / Suggested Route Order There are four main heroins, Rimu, Yayoi, Kanade, and Riho, and their routes can be plaed in whatever order you like, though it is suggested to play Riho's route last. Route Guideline Ooba Yayoi Good End Sakurai Kanade Good End Tamano Rimu Good End Kaguya Riho Good End Attribution This walkthrough is based on info attained on Gamefaqs.com with some adjustments made by me.1 point
