Sorcery Jokers: It surprised Clephas, will it surprise you?
Mr Poltroon and one other reacted to Clephas for a blog entry
First, I'll give you a quick run-down on this game... it is a game by 3rd Eye, a company known mostly for producing chuunige that are more moe-influenced than is the norm. This game is actually more of a mystery/chuuni/action/conspiracy type than a 'pure' chuunige. The world in which it is based is a future where, ten years before the story began, magic appeared on the scene. Large numbers of people became capable of using magic, and a new branch of science was built up solely for the purpose of utilizing magic as new energy source. The result of this is a society that is somewhat divided between the magical 'haves' and 'have-nots', though that isn't the focus of the story, despite what you might otherwise anticipate. The protagonists Senri Senri is your classic 'bad-ass antihero protagonist'. He is clever, intelligent, and overall highly capable, with a razor-sharp mind and battle instincts that would put a Navy Seal to shame and make Golgo 13 look incompetent. His cold-blooded pursuit of his own interests, which are very opaque through most of the VN, is his primary defining feature... Oh, and he lies... a lot. He makes the protagonist of Sharin no Kuni seem honest. Haruto Haruto is a somewhat less beloved type of protagonist in chuunige... basically a 'justice freak' combined with being 'a young man driven against his will by the tides of fate'. He is a natural optimist and a believer in fairness above all. Unfortunately, he also has that bad habit a lot of similar chuunige protagonists have... of sticking his nose into situations he doesn't really need to get involved in. He grows a great deal during the course of the VN (as is typical of this type, if the writers don't suck), and by the end his viewpoint on the world has... been sharpened a great deal by experience. He is more likeable than a lot of similar protagonists, but it still isn't a type I prefer. The Heroines Fiona Fiona, at first glance, seems to be your classic clutzy/innocent nun-type heroine. She works as a nun at a run-down church in the city's... less reputable area and is well-loved by the delinquents who frequent the church. However, she, like most of the characters in this game, is hiding a lot of secrets... She is one of Senri's two heroines. Noa An innocent, pure-hearted girl who is seen mostly as a ghost throughout the first part of the game. She has a really unique way of speaking, born partially from Senri's half-hearted efforts at education (mostly through handing her magazines and letting her watch AVs). To be honest, in the reading of this VN, interpreting her weird speech patterns was a bit difficult at first (she cuts apart words and puts them together in weird ways). She is the second of Senri's two heroines. Asahi Asahi is... a bit weird. Her personality itself is quite straightforward and honest, and she hates lies and general dishonesty with a passion. However, she is also compassionate to a fault and unwavering in the pursuit of her goals. Unfortunately - at least so it seems at first - there are a few loose screws rolling around in that head of hers. Even more so than Haruto, she is an eternal an unrepentant optimist and probably the single most trustworthy individual in the entire VN. Riku Riku is, throughout the VN, perhaps the least expressive individual other than Senri himself. She almost never displays her emotions on her face, and she has an almost unnatural tendency to think objectively about anything and everything, including herself. That the writer managed to grant her so much depth without making her a protagonist was an impressive feat in and of itself... and one of the reasons why her interactions with Haruto and Asahi are so amusing. She really is almost as detached as she seems most of the time, which is one of the reasons it hits so hard when she does become emotional. The VN Sorcery Jokers is definitely VN of the Month material. I'll say that right off the bat. The depth of the story and characters is incomparable with previous games by this company, and while it falls slightly short of a kamige, it is nonetheless something worth taking note of. Normally, I can't stand dual protagonists, as many have heard me mention. I hated Subahibi for that, amongst a number of other sins, and one of the biggest reasons it took me so long to play I/O was because I don't like going into VNs with multiple protags. Fortunately, I managed to get past that, simply because the differing approaches to the story were the only thing that made it possible to grasp something even approaching the whole of the story as it happened. A single perspective wouldn't have done a bit of good as an approach to this VN's story, simply because there are too many things happening at too many different points for a single perspective to handle. The VN's structure is basically that of a kinetic novel, with the illusion of choice through a flow chart (for the first chapter, at least) where you pick and choose which events you want to see next (though you have to see them all anyway). To be honest, I could have done without the flow chart entirely... flow charts in general are an irritation more than a help, especially if they are made a central part of progressing the story. That said, as the actual switching around mostly ends after the first chapter, it isn't really a big deal (though it does make me wonder why they had a flow chart at all). The story's mystery and conspiracy elements feel a lot like peeling an onion, as there are layers within layers within layers. What you thought was the root of things turns out to be just another layer, more than once. As things come together near the end, the knowledge you've gained through the character perspectives deepens the experience nicely, making this one of the few part-mystery VNs I've played in recent years that I didn't immediately have 'read' relatively early on. That isn't to say there aren't points where the VN stumbles. Haruto, because of his role as the 'kid chuunige protag', is the game's Achilles Heel, as all protagonists of the type with his kind of temperament tend to be. However, his growth is enough to offset the cookie-cutter aspects of his character enough that I approved of his role... in the end. Asahi also threatens to tilt the balance of the VN into the realm of the silly a lot early on, simply because of her 'weirdness'. However, because that silliness is a vital ingredient in her growth as a character, it can't really said to be a true weakness, though it can be irritating at times. The endings are all branches off of the true end, one for each heroine (Noa or Fiona with Senri, and Asahi or Riku with Haruto). I had no problems with the epilogues for Noa or Fiona... but I thought that Haruto had devolved a lot in his heroine epilogues, which kind of brought me back to why I didn't like him in the first place. Overall, I felt that this VN is one of the more solid chuunige made in the last few years, especially in the sense of 'balance'. Silverio Vendetta, while it is a lot more exhilarating, also had the difficulty of disproportionately focusing the writer's attention on Vendetta, which weakened the other two paths greatly. Bansenjin suffers from reusing an uninspiring cast and being relatively boring throughout most of its length. In terms of a constant sense of tension and in terms of pacing of events, this VN definitely is the winner of Chuunige VN of the Year so far, though it isn't chuuni-crack in the sense that Silverio was. I'm actually quite proud of the fact that this company has evolved so much since its somewhat... unimpressive beginnings (Bloody Rondo), and I'm glad I stuck with the company. It is always nice to be surprised pleasantly by a VN.2 points -

Back when internet access was for rich people and we still knew the save icon was a floppy disk, our first contact with PC gaming was likely through the game Solitaire. Who can forget the emotion of seeing cards fly all over the window when you got them all stacked up after losing 73 times in a row. Well, Microsoft knew we loved Solitaire, that's why they have brought it back into Windows 10... COMPLETELY REVAMPED WITH ADS! AND NOW FOR JUST THE LOW PRICE OF 1.50 DOLLARS A MONTH YOU CAN GET RID OF ALL THE ADS AND PLAY YOUR BELOVED SOLITAIRE AD FREE. OH BABY! Thank you Microsoft! You really knew the key to make Windows 10 a smash hit! Here's a token of my appreciation: Source: http://www.vg247.com/2015/07/30/windows-10-solitaire-has-ads-you-can-pay-to-dismiss/1 point

I don't own a credit card, though... waste of money. I prefer to use money orders and prepaid store credit. Money orders are better, if you buy everything at once... Occasionally, I'll pick up a set-amount vanilla card for companies that don't have a store credit system or accept money orders, though. Edit: lol... I am kind of wishing I had dlsite store credit at the moment, since several VNs I think look interesting are only available on the Japanese side for download...1 point -

First, the simple basis for understanding the way Japanese think about the supernatural. Simply put, Shinto, which was the country's official religion and is the religion that originated there, is an animistic faith, with a strong tendency toward the personification of nature and objects. Second, Buddhism was the dominant faith in Japan for centuries, when the various shogunates tried to weaken the Emperor's power by strengthening the influence of Buddhism as a rival faith. Why is this relevant? Shintoism personifies the dead and believes in the concept of living gods. The Buddhist tributaries in Japan generally believe in reincarnation. Both faiths create a belief that there are things in the world that exist alongside us that cannot be seen by 'normal' people. Both have a belief in life after death, and both have a concept of 'lingering' and 'ascension'. Generally speaking, Japanese spiritualists hold to a belief (or so they say) that if you can see a spirit, you can effect it and it can effect you. It is vital to understand this before anything else when dealing with Japanese spiritualism in general. While the idea of ghosts harming or possessing those who can't see them isn't denied by Japanese spiritualists, those who can 'see' them are thought to be more vulnerable, if left untrained ('training' generally resembling Buddhist asceticism and meditation). Now, the word 'oni' is perhaps the most overused name for spirits in Japan. This is because it can be taken to be any spirit that can and does cause harm, refer to humans whose souls have fallen into evil, and/or the legendary giant ogre-type creatures like Shuten-doji that litter Japanese legend. Because of this, it isn't uncommon for ghosts, youkai, and even some 'kami' (the animistic idea of gods in the Shinto faith) to be considered 'oni'. This should give you an idea of how useless any attempt to define what an oni is can be, and why it is so conveniently used in VNs, anime, and manga. A lot of this lack of discrimination comes from the fact that Shinto attributes souls to all things, whether they are humans, animals, natural disasters, or even inanimate objects. Now, the two attitudes 'traditional' people in Japan take toward ghosts tend to be: 'seal them up' or 'banish them'. While Shinto can be said to be nature-worshiping, it is at its heart a pragmatist's faith. 'Cleanse people's souls so they don't do bad things'. 'Cleanse a place to prevent possible disaster'. 'Worship a god so it doesn't squish you'. Simple, isn't it? Of course, there are a lot of deeper details, but that is what you should keep in mind as a core reality of the faith and its view on spiritualism. In otaku-media, it is extremely rare for fantasy anime that deal with ghosts, spirits, or demons to take a single-faith approach to it. You'll almost always see a multi-faith approach, with one or more being dominant (including Christian ones at times). Shinto is dominant the most often, though Buddhism tends to dominate when you get into stuff based a few centuries in the past. Onmyoudou, one of the original types of 'spiritualism' in Japan is very much a fusion of Buddhist and Shinto ideas, if you want an example, since it is extensively used in various anime. What does this all come down to? Basically, traditional Japanese viewpoints on ghosts and spirits tend to be ones of rejection, and this is something to keep in mind when reading a VN or watching an anime that deals with ghosts, youkai, or other supernatural beings. A few bits of vocab: kami- While it is a term that is also used for the Christian god, it is a universal term for all supernatural beings that have worshipers or need to be be/have been worshiped. By Japanese standards, angels and demons would be considered to be kami under the right circumstances, as the Japanese consider 'enshrining' a harmful existence to be a way to keep it from harming them. akuma- Simply, demon. This is a relatively modern term made of the kanji for evil and the kanji for 'that which is outside/heretical'. oni- both a name for a specific type of ogre-type youkai and a generalized umbrella term for evil spirits, humans who have fallen into evil ways to an extreme degree, and aspects of certain kami. youkai- spirits of Japanese legend. The most common are nature spirits, animal spirits, dragons, and 'object spirits' (Tsukumogami). It isn't uncommon for beneficial or powerful ones to be raised up as 'kami' and enshrined to gain the benefit of their blessing and prevent them from doing harm. Whether they are seen as having physical form varies based upon the individual viewpoint. Reibaishi- An almost identical concept to the Western 'medium'... basically someone who can see spirits and/or communicate with them and makes a living off of it. Jorei- Exorcism, though it is usually of spirits rather than demons. PS: This isn't complete... I'll be adding to it later, lol.1 point

I try to pay for literally everything I play. If it has a licensed release, certainly (preferably through some downloadable store - Steam or JAST USA, I guess are the only players here?). Even if it's not licensed, I'll try to import it; so far I've used J-List and Mandarake for that. I actually just today imported Sekien no Inganock through Mandarake, since it looks like that's going to win the August reading club vote. But, I have a different financial and living situation than most people here which makes that easier for me - I have my own apartment, and I have a job that pays well enough for me to afford an "expensive" hobby like importing VNs. Compared to hobbies like skiing, this one is cheap. Edit: I also meant to mention that the only VN I've played which I failed to buy a copy of is Comyu. If you for whatever reason come across a copy of it and let me know, I will happily pay you a reasonable finder's fee Edit 2: VNDB lets you list what releases of the game you've obtained, and I actually fill that out, so if for whatever reason you're curious, you can see the full list of what I've bought there.1 point

Maji de Watashi ni Koishinasai! S https://vndb.org/v6245 Introduction Good day everyone. This is the Maji de watashi ni koishinasai! S Walkthrough for the currently patched fully translated game. I made this first to fully explore the content of the game but since I’ve made a good progress with writing my own walkthrough, might as well share it with everyone. This is the sequel for the first Majikoi game which shows the future for the five main heroines while adding five more additional heroines to conquer. It’s great right? Since this is rated 18+, please be noted that there are a number of scenes that are for mature audiences. Falling under the said age is not advisable to play this game. With that said, have fun playing the game. GAME START! Description Majikoi is back and better than ever in this sequel to hit 2009 visual novel. Majikoi S takes place after the events of Majikoi and lets you choose which of Majikoi’s many endings to proceed from. Choose your favorite heroine and enjoy new romantic events with her, or choose to start with no commitment and romance one of 5 new heroines. - J-List Things to be noted before starting the game When starting the game for the first time, you are required to fill in your birth date. I recommend having a date closer to the actual date. This will give you an easy access to the Birthday Mode in the Extras rather than waiting for your actual birthday to view this mode. Well, you would be lucky if your actual birthday is near that you don’t have to adjust the date just to view this early. There is a random glitch where the game gives a completely different scenario when choosing from the dialogue box. It’s easy to notice based on what choice you pick and what the dialogue/ text comes after. When this happens, just reload to the previous choices and pick again. Tatsuko’s route needs to be played twice for the Clear mark to appear in the Future Selection screen. Childhood unlocks after completion of all 10 routes. (Momoyo, Kazuko, Miyako, Yukie, Chris, Tsubame, Monshiro, Margit, Kokoro, Tatsuko). Future where you are an acquaintance of Takae unlocks after all routes are completed. After completion, an ALL CLEAR!! text should appear on the top right of the Future Selection screen. By the end of this walkthrough, The CG, Music, Replay, Event and Movie Collection are completed. Try to go for choices that you haven’t pick to see a different scene. Choices with [sAVE] and [LOAD SAVE] are choices needed to proceed to the end of each chosen routes while then you are free to choose any choice for the ones not marked. Ending Guideline / Suggested Route Order The suggested playing order is listed below for those who wanted to play the game efficiently. You can also play this by following this order: Kosugi > Common Route > Tsubame > Monshiro > Margit > Kokoro > Agave After > Tatsuko > Future with Momoyo/Kazuko/Miyako/Yukie/Chris > Childhood Route Guideline Kosugi Route Future with Kosugi Continued Common Route 2nd year 1st semester (Clear) Future without a relationship Future with Momoyo S After Future with Kazuko S After Future with Miyako S After Future with Yukie S After Future with Chris After +S After Tsubame Route Future Where Tsubame Takes the Lead Future Where Yamato Takes the Lead Monshiro Route Monshiro Route Continued Margit Route Margit Route Continued Kokoro Route Future with Hermit Crabs S After Agave After Tatsuko Route Childhood Koyuki Route [LOAD SAVE 12] Fuck her hard. CG 123 [12/12]; CG 124 [4/4] Future with Chousokabe Iyo Route Future with Shima Future with the Maids Yumiko Route Another Future with Miyako Another Future with Miyako-1 Another Future with Miyako-2 Another Future with Miyako-3 Future Where You're An Acquaintance of Takae Attribution This walkthrough is based on the walkthrough from seiya-saiga.com which I adjusted based on the fully translated patch provided by our translators. Please check this walkthrough if there is something amiss Admin/Moderator-san. Thanks1 point -

Windows 10 has some negligible upgrades to performance that only serious techies will care about, and some gaming upgrades only serious PC gamers will care about. An upgraded interface design which is straight from the modern Fisher Price school of art. A new gimmick in the way of a virtual assistant, which is precisely that – a gimmick, and for all Windows 10 home users, no way to deny automatic updates which is just retarded. Also, it’s incomplete, some hardware and/or software won’t work, still too much mobile influence. For me, there’s absolutely zero reason to upgrade, also Windows 7 suits my needs better than Windows 10. In fact, the majority of users will see no reason to upgrade, probably why they’re rolling it out for free. At the end of the day Windows 7 is far from being outdated, and my opinion on the matter won't change because MS thinks it knows my needs and has delusions that it can see the future.1 point -

One thing I remember finding a bit annoying when I first started out (which was a year ago), is that there as so many slightly different ways to learn. And different people learn more efficiently doing slightly different things. Lol, I remember one person I spoke to on this site told me that with only rudimentary understanding of the language he read a lot of Untld Nukiges for an entire year, and eventually found himself able to read more complicated VNs. I found that to be an interesting (not to mention extreme) answer. I can impart you with some advice from my personal experience. But please keep in mind that my level is around advanced beginner and intermediate learner. As everyone has been pointing out, basic grammar is a must. I highly recommend Tae Kim and reading through Basic Grammar, Essential Grammar, and Special Expressions (you can save Advanced Topics for later). Personally I read each section a first time somewhat quickly to acquaint myself with the material, then I would reread that section thoroughly and take notes. Once I finished the section a second time, I would review the key points (usually various conjugations), and then finally move onto the next section. Once you feel you have comfortable knowledge of necessary Japanese grammar, then I recommend to start reading (preferably something simple). By reading (with the help of ITH and Translation Aggregator) you will not only gain vocabulary through repeated words, but more importantly at this stage; you will be training your brain to understand Japanese grammar in it's native habitat. Before with Tae Kim you learned grammar on a theoretical level, now your knowledge is put in practice. Once I felt reasonably comfortable with Japanese grammar in practice I started placing more importance on vocabulary acquisition. At first I used the old fashioned approach with flashcards. I wrote down the words that were either frequently used, or that my dictionary told me were N5, N4, or N3 level vocabulary. However, flashcards got really annoying. Not to mention reviewing words that are stripped from the context felt pointless to me. Eventually I ditched them and started putting my vocabulary words on post-it notes and attaching them to my wall. That way, when I read something, and a word seems familiar; I'll check my wall first before checking the dictionary. Admittedly a bit of a weird method, but for me at least it has been way more effective than using flashcards (either digital ones like Anki, or physical ones). So yeah. I definitely recommend getting advice from people who have already achieved full literacy in the language. But I hope I provided useful advice for the earlier stages of learning. Also, regarding how long it will take to reach literary fluency. That answer honestly varies from person to person, but the method I've modeled my learning style from (Aaeru's method) is scheduled to take around 2 years.1 point

Hi Everyone! Stopping in to give y'all an update on Krill ..He is doing pretty well this week he has his good days and bad. He has had therapy and they are helping so much. They gave him a list of about 50 words to work on at home with me and he can say almost all of them missing only maybe 5 to 10 depending on how his days been.He went to a therapy session by himself with medical transport. He also stayed home a few hours yesterday as i had a Dr appointment and our son was at his grandparents house. When i got home he had cleaned up our sons toys in the livingroom for me :-) He has been able to make his own bowl of cereal for breakfast without making a mess.He has been online and trying to type to friends. He can say "ok" which is better than it was.Tomorrow he is going with his father to sign paper work at the lawyers. Im not sure if i told you about the lawsuit against the first hospital i sent him to the day he had the strokes. They said the catscans showed nothing and his symptoms were a chronic issue from his schizophrenia and sent him home with a blood pressure super high 168/109 and him at that point unable to speak. I sent him to another hospital with a stroke unit later that day and they told me they could see the strokes on those exact same scans and they knew he was having the strokes immediately. So the first hospital missed the 2 hour window to give him a clot busting drug and prevent anymore strokes and cause all this damage he is now dealing with.So we are suing them for malpractice. Please if you have any questions or advise dont hesitate to reply with questions or comments.1 point -
