  2. So a few days ago, as I was scouring the interwebz, I came across this interesting looking VN called Tenkiami. The description on vndb is a bit lacking so I don't know what the story is about, but the two heroines (only two) are miko kitsunes, one pettanko and one kyonyuu. Here's the link: https://vndb.org/v17337 I'm a fan of kitsunes and noticed a lack of VN's with kitsunes as the main heroines, translated ones anyway. I mainly wanted to put this out there in case there were any miko kitsune fans who wanted to try their hand at translating this. I don't know how to check the spript size so I can't say how long it is, if anyones interested then maybe someone can start a project for this? I don't have the time to help since I'm working and training for the military (all I'd be able to do is proofread or edit anyway) but if this gets translated I'd be very happy~

  3. Like some others, I got tricked into playing yet another gameplay-hybrid in the series of games by Gesen known as the Sangoku Hime series. To be honest... I couldn't imagine how they could have screwed things up worse. First of all, they used their 'restructuring' of the game as a big draw for those who were disappointed with a lot of the aspects of 3. They basically redid all the character designs (without exception) with completely new characterization, art, and voices... and I'll be honest, I couldn't imagine how they could have screwed things up worse. It isn't just that the style has regressed in some ways (the male character designs, which were actually pretty awesomely detailed in previous games, are now unbelievably crappy by any standard, probably to bring them in line with the new, moe-moe character designs for the female characters)... if it were just that, I would have shrugged and let it go. Unfortunately, it pretty much eliminated the best part of 3, which was the glorious atmosphere that enveloped you at key historical moments, such as the confrontation with the Yellow Turbans or the Alliance against Dong Zhuo... and especially when you defeated one of the Three Kingdoms or reached another historical turning points. Sun Ce, who was a warrior-queen type in the previous games, has turned into a moe-airhead with a war-addiction in this one. Cao Cao, who always put her ambition first and had the immense strength of will to follow through on her plans at all costs, while possessing a surprising sense of mercy and compassion to those who followed her or surrendered to her... has become a kuudere with a love of sweets. Even worse, her appearance in 3, which was kind of demonic, was changed drastically to make her into 'just another leader-heroine'. The only ones that hadn't changed were the Liu Bei followers, whose drive and personality hadn't essentially changed (though their visuals had changed significantly... oddly the only positive visual change I saw in the game). Now, setting aside the characterization and visual changes in other characters, we'll come to the change I found the most unbelievably annoying. Ginga, for all that he was a straight-out womanizing soldier-type in the previous games, nonetheless had a distinct personality. He was a powerful individual who knew the battlefield like the back of his hand. Unfortunately, he was replaced in the new game by Akito, your typical 'nice-guy' VN protagonist who happens to have an ability to see the future in dreams (and yet he can't seem to figure out how to use it... until late in various paths). Oh, there were other big issues throughout what I played... such as the lack of serious character development and the retaining of pointless slice of life scenes for side-characters that feels out of place in an otherwise serious game. However, the writing/story side just basically lost ALL of its luster... leaving you with the drudgery of the Sangoku Hime series (yes, the actual game-progression hadn't changed a bit from the previous games). There were some changes to the gameplay... such as the contraction of the soldier-types into a mere six different ones (light infantry, destroyers, barbarians, cavalry, archers, and tacticians (female or male)) versus the twelve or so that existed in previous games. This was actually an improvement in some ways, as it clearly redefined the classes according to their abilities and role. The character-building system is also simplified into three trees (war, learning, and astrology) and is expanded to cover all generals, not just the unique ones. Unfortunately, that simplification means that it is hard to impossible to overcome weaknesses in vital characters such as the ruler of your country (Liu Bei and Sun Ce both have weak political abilities compared to Cao Cao, whose abilities in this area are among the highest in the game). This can be a huge handicap, as your leader's political ability determines how much you can do in a single turn. You also lose most of the skills that were most useful in the previous games, such as the ones that let you massively increase your attack power in certain situations (thus giving you more strategic options). In the end, I just had to drop the game after I conquered half of China with Cao Cao, Liu Bei, and the Sun family... all three had exactly the same problems. Not to mention that the detailed story scenes that recreated certain minor but vital historical events were gone entirely (I particularly missed the events from Cao Cao's rise to power, which were fascinating and as true to the base material as anything I've seen in a game like this).

  4. For Osu, I know there's a lot of bad habits and practice habits that can stop you from getting any better. It takes the right type of practice and a lot of work to continuously improve. So, while I'm disappointed, I'm hopefully not beating myself up over being stuck at this wall at ~25k, even though I've played more than most people have at that level. Nowadays for MP games, as far as gameplay reasons, I only play them now if the strategy is fun, or if gameplay is pretty fun regardless of win or lose. There are few IRL people I knowwho have spent less time on Japanese (or managed their time better and so have gotten more other things done in addition) and are just as good or better. This had me quite taken-aback, but the truth is, the fact is that, as long as it's the stuff attached to you that you value, someone else having more skill than you doesn't make what you've experienced and gained less valuable. I chose to study Japanese, and it matters how good I am compared to if I had spent a different amount of time on it. It shouldn't matter how good I am compared to another person. If I see other people studying more efficiently, I can try and copy that study method. But studying the method might be difficult (for me) and so I shouldn't expect 100% to see a benefit out of that, nor should I feel so bad in the case that I can't apply that method effectively. I'm not really the king of positive thinking, but what I say to myself when I see people way ahead of me: "Those people are miles ahead. Well, the best thing I can do is keep working, that'll get me as far as possible. That's the important part." Having people somewhat above and below your level is good for gaining gaining and understanding of what constitutes skill. Having people way above your level is disconcerting, and can be harmful if you don't handle it well internally. Hah, I look down on people too from time to time. I can't help it. It must be my blasted insecurity showing.

  15. All of the first three have solid beginnings (though they each approach them slightly differently)... 3 is most solid if you follow 'official history' (as they seem to fail utterly the second they step away from the source material) which means Sun Ce dies pretty early on and Sun Quan takes over... but you can alter that, at the cost of a great deal of story development. by choosing to attack and defeat Cao Cao as early as possible, which also has the side-difficulty of eliminating the possibility of alliance with Liu Bei's forces, lol. Cao Cao's plot is the most interesting, though Liu Bei's path has you stepping into the role of Liu Bei, which is interesting in and of itself. The Liu Bei path is pretty twisty, because of the weird way in which he came to power. If you just want straight insane difficulty, pick Lu Bu's path, as you start out conquering the weakest province (in terms of wealth) and basically are open to attack from all directions immediately afterward (versus the initially-guided conquest of the other paths). I'm pretty sure there is also a 'Han path', which is basically a series of controlled campaigns and story battles that lead to the Han dynasty continuing after fighting a mysterious evil force... though that might be in one of the others, lol.

  17. About games, I play competitive MP rarely since I suck at all kinds of games. Makes me feel better, because otherwise I feel like shit indeed. About all other things, I've adopted a (admittedly unconscious) perspective where I'm inwardly arrogant about everything I care about. Nobody in my term has better English than me. I can get into a top-level university if I just try a bit. Oh those poor fools (referring to a vast majority of the country), they don't know how amazing literature is. I pity those who don't know high level English. Still having faith? Pah. I try not to let it show, but I'm an arrogant prick. :/

  19. Someone will always be better than you. Someone will always be worse than you. That's life. The sooner you embrace that, the happier you'll be. As for myself, I try to practice a bit of mindfulness in competition by letting go of as many expectations as possible. If I'm lucky, I can focus on the moment, not the result. Was I happy with my performance? Did I have fun? If so, then I consider it time well-spent, regardless of whether I won or lost.

  20. Favorite-character wise, the first thing that comes to mind is the protagonist from an OELVN I'm writing, Narakawa Hanase. Though that's probably cheating. Other than that, it would have to be Beatrice of Umineko. Favorite Route after some thought would have to be Akane's route from Rewrite. The game as a whole had its off moments but good damn that was a crazy ride.

  23. That first week is so long, relatively speaking, because they want to give equal screen time to each of the girls before you make your pick — and that takes lines. Once you do choose, of course, all the other girls get eaten by sharks or something, so there's nothing but quality time for you and your sweetie.

  26. Well yeah, that seems to be what the Japanese government's reasoning: they want to form technically able people that will make money and be useful to their nation, while ridding them of such encumbering things as the ability to think or understand how politics, societies and human beings work. I personally loathe the idea of reducing education to 'what is useful for the work market'. Your future job is not the end goal of your life. The goal of education is to make you a decent and cultivated human being, able to think by himself. I highly doubt Japan is THAT much in a dire need of money, these departments don't cost nearly as much as scientific departments and their costly equipment. The real reason is probably that Japan is trying to get themselves back an army and are pouring more budget into that instead. And let's get the Godwin point done with: repressing social sciences and humanities while reinforcing the army is one of the recurrent symptoms of a nascent totalitarian state.

  27. Huh, interesting little trivia. The seiyuu for Benkei is the same seiyuu for Aisha/Kan'U from the Koihime Musou games. A1 English patch confirmed, has full support of manager for Shin Koihime Musou translation. Majikoi X Koihime Musou coming soon.
