Hoshizora no Memoria Review Discussion
Gibberish and one other reacted to Fred the Barber for a topic
I think it's all about the intended audience (and it may be possible to address both with one review, I don't know). Anyway, here are two hypothetical audiences for a review: - If the audience is reading a review to try to make some sort of decision about whether to try something out, then that audience needs some shared experience which is, obviously, not the object being reviewed. Generic categories like ratings on "graphics" and "music", or overall numerical ratings, are an understandable attempt to help with that. The goal is to evaluate whether an individual audience member will personally be interested in it, but there's no guarantee of any individual shared experience, which makes this a really hard kind of review audience to address. I think Tiagofvarela offers good suggestions for addressing this audience, such as offering a breakdown of what aspects worked well and what aspects did not work well broken down by genre rather than by technical area. But in general, a hyper-subjective review probably will of course not get this across as well as a review that makes an attempt at some degree of objectivity. Analyzing the subject matter into relevant pieces is likely best you can do, here, because the audience doesn't share the total experience, and they aren't going to share it purely on the basis of your review. And the total experience is, generally, much more likely to be subjective than the analyzed pieces. Maybe I just find Chinami's tone of voice while she yells "onii-san" to be incomparably adorable, and I melt in a puddle of happiness every time I hear it. - On the other hand, if the audience has already experienced the thing being reviewed, then the audience is looking to connect to the author about that shared experience. For this kind of audience, I agree that the most subjective review possible is going to give the best experience for the audience, because you're more likely to hit on common ground on that same shared experience in a subjective discussion, vs. by boiling it down into numbers or classifications. Synthesis of the overall experience, rather than analysis of the little pieces of the experience, is complete in the mind of both the reviewer and the audience, so you know you have a lot of existing shared ground to build upon for the sake of discussion. Given the responses, I expect this is a great review on the second fork, but maybe not so great on the first fork, especially given the 3/10 rating; I doubt that is anything like a useful or objective rating, given HoshiMemo's ~8.0 VNDB rating, for someone like me who is late to the party and has yet to read it. By all means, give a subjective review saying all the things you found troubling, but if your numerical rating is so far outside the norm, then probably you're better off not giving one at all, unless you're just trying to stir up controversy.2 points -
Been playing another older title, Crescendo. It's not bad! It's actually really different than most translated eroge. It features third person narration and it sort of cuts into the story after everyone has already met each other and been together for a year or more. It almost has a voyeuristic feel to it as you're peeking into the lives of these people, instead of the typical setup where they give you a cipher protagonist with first person narration so the reader can feel like they're there with them. There's also almost no slice of life. Every scene has purpose, and they do a good job of introducing these characters and establishing their relationships despite starting in the middle (or really, near the end) of their stories with no fluff or filler for characterization. It doesn't feel rushed at all. That art though... Not gonna lie, it IS pretty bad.2 points

Games that involve pen and paper
Tay reacted to InvertMouse for a topic
Hello folks :). Last year, I finally played through this old FPS named Hexen, and I loved the experience thoroughly. The game has a lot of puzzles that are related to one another, so I ended up jotting down notes as I played. It felt great to write down an observation, then cross it out later after I manage to solve a particular puzzle. A few years ago, I also played through this game called Etrian Odyssey IV. The game has a digital map that you can draw out as you explore the dungeons, which was pretty fun. Just the simple idea of discovery. I figured it the digital map did not exist, and you have to painstakingly jot out the dungeons on paper, there might be something rewarding to that as well. Have you ever played a game that forced you to use pen and paper, and you got a rewarding experience out of it? I also wanted to see if there are any other games like Etrian Odyssey, where you have to draw out your own maps. I figured it might work for those dungeon crawling VNs, but maybe it is too hardcore for a broad audience. Thanks :)!1 point -
For those who are unaware or have forgotten, the plot "Back to the Future Part II", released in 1989, was that Doc, Marty, and Jennifer were sent back to the future once more, only this time it was to October 21, 2015. As a big fan of the series, I've been looking forward to this for so long. I don't know about you guys, but "Back to the Future" was a huge part of my childhood. It's pretty awesome to watch the movie and see how absurdly wrong it was, though it did get some things correct, like predicting that the world would become obsessed with mobile electronics. Anyways, thought it would be cool to share this. Have you seen the series? Was it a part of your childhood? Feel free to share your stories if so1 point

SEEKING 2D Background artist & 2D Animator to join existing OELVN team!
kingdomcome reacted to Jason_OCE for a topic
Heya guys, I'm the lead of a Visual Novel team, and we're looking for new additions to our team to help us create something awesome! Our Project We're listed as a free project, working from our passion in our free time. Our skill levels vary from beginner to highly adept. We have two projects, but are only really actively working on one of them, which isn't publically available yet. We're all in it for the experience, however upon our project reaching a monetizable state, the team members will be rewarded for their work accordingly. We take on a high quality benchmark, and during our "early" development will be very loose on our deadlines and requirements for activity. We'll be releasing a full playable demo, as well as a trailer the same time we release a Kickstarter project as well as a Steam greenlight. All these long term plans depend on the work of our team, which might include you! Roles Background artistYou're someone that has experience creating background artwork and scenery. Experience in 3D rendering would help, but as long as you make awesome stuff, we won't judge how ( Unless it involves some form of live virgin sacrifice, if that's the case, this team isn't a good fit for you ) AnimatorYou're a 2D animator that has experience in an anime style of artwork, or at least managing a lot of elements at once. You'll be joining another animator, to share the work load, and collaborate on openings, chapter animations, ect. Applying If you're keen to get involved, send me a private message here. Please include links to previous works, why you want to get involved, and your Skype ID so we can talk further. I'll be talking to everyone who applies to find the best suit for our team. I look forward to hearing from you guys! ~Jason1 point -
I'm almost certain non sex scenes cover at least more than 50% of the game. Nahhh. I'll have to see when the full game comes out, but I'd wager well over half of the script is in the h-scenes. Keeping in mind that there are 5 possible h-scenes for each turn and the intervals aren't much longer than an individual h-scene, if at all, and sometimes there are extra h-scenes mixed in as well. That just means the sex is dual purpose. You can't say a game with so many features conducive to masturbation isn't interested in getting the readers off. Stuff like the CG zooming, the ejaculation countdown, and so on. Also I still don't know why you're obsessed with this ero-guro thing, it has nothing to do with it. It's not there, but it's still a dark fetishistic experience, just in a different way. Clock Up and MangaGamer aggressively markets the game as a fetishistic nukige and you better believe that's why most people are getting it.1 point
-
People make it sound like nukige carries a negative value when really it mostly refers to the ratio of story x sex scenes and how the plot is handled in a way to lead to those scenes. Unless you show this game spends the majority of time developing the story rather than showing you sex scenes, then it's a nukige. That doesn't however imply it can't have a good story behind it, just that a majority of the time you'll be looking at sex scenes.1 point

I just don't see how the presence of guro or the lack thereof is relevant. No, it's not for guro fetishists, but there are plenty of fetishes it does appeal to, in a VERY heavy-handed way. I know there are people who insist this isn't nukige. I just think they're dead wrong and are deluding themselves.1 point -
as for i, a novel should by no means consist of the following: • sloppy written endings, or those way too open conclusion-wise • illogical plot and other obviously inconsistencies • an author, who doesnt treat his characters with needed respect, like killing them off only for ahhhs & ohhhs • chracters displaying inconsequent behaviour, or acting against their personality for no reason • superficial stories as a means of personal escapism • soulless stuff which doesnt reach ones heart, ergo in which the author didnt pour his own into whilst writing • donkan, or hetare protagonists1 point

There is practically no guro and it's not meant to be shocking in that regard. It is still a nukige, though. I very heavily disagree with people who say the ero content isn't the main point. It is front and center in the VN and heartily invites you at every opportunity to fap to it. It is a parade of h-scenes with a bit of story in between. The story takes itself seriously and is another major component to it, but... yeah, it's a heavily fetishistic nukige. And, to be honest, it doesn't even seem to be that good of a story.1 point

as for those having problems with the non fappability of its ero-content...pretty sure it wasnt intended by the creators for this kind of purpose at all. the stories main focus lies undoubtly and omnipresent on true love, the search for ones own luck plus struggling for selfacceptance, so people who purchase it in order to cater their dark fetishes like ero-guro etc. will be pretty much dissappointed by reading it, simply because that isnt the novels purpose at all - as i personally consider chaos head, or kara no shoujo beeing way more shocking in terms of violence and such.1 point

Princess Evangile Release 2015
Kawasumi reacted to CeruleanGamer for a topic
Not everyone can order goods like this to the home or country they live in. And other people just hate having to wait for the mailman, so I don't think everyone will cry about it. Not really. Digital copies are better imo. Physical copies are mainly bought to display on your mancave/gamer shelf or reselling. They are more discreet and usually the preferred medium if you dont want other people knowing about "your hobbies".1 point -
Okay, Period is really good (period). The voice acting is superb, the soundtrack neat and catchy, the jokes are really funny and the protagonist is beautifully sharp-tongued and bumfuck lazy. Just like me back in school! (... Nothing really changed, now that I think about it...) The art is Littlewitch art. Take it or leave it. I'm not really into those chins, foreheads or lacking bodytype diversity, but the actual product itself is entertaining enough to make me go through it. And it's not bad art, on an artistic level. There are shadows, colors, accents and all of that stuff, so it's really just different. And different is usually cool. The characters are a little "tropey", but it is a story and there's atleast diversity in how they act and in between them (also, it's refreshing to see the in VNs rarely encountered straight tomboy). The only character that seems somewhat redundant is the class rep, Miyu. She's very similar a to Kohane. I also like how Period is structured, because it's not easy to tell when the common route is going to end just from reading it for the first time. Also, it seems like a lot of scenes change depending on the girl you pick, which is really cool. I don't think I'll read the entire thing, because not every character is that interesting to me, but for now I'm sticking with it. For a period of time.1 point

Fuwanovel Confessions

Confession: I am actually thinking of switching to a local community college from the University I am attending. I don't think what I am doing here now is going to benefit me the way I think it will. I feel like I am just making a huge monetary mistake here. My plans? Maybe switch over to IT and just go from there. I just feel like there is nothing waiting for me on the other end of this University path, so I should probably jump to a different ship before the one I am on capsizes. Confession 2: It's not like I am getting bad marks or anything. In fact, my marks are higher than they ever were in High School. I guess what I am doing isn't capturing me like it once did, and I am just wary of committing financial suicide. ^^'''1 point -
