  1. After having read the reddit post, I really do have to agree that this specific community (the VN community) is very easily offended and quick to overreact over every little thing. I remember when all the FuwaMods swapped their forum avatars with each other's and they suddenly got called out for being unprofessional and immature. Like what the fuck lol. Mods aren't allowed to have a bit of fun now? I don't know what attributes to this - maybe it's because a majority of the fanbase are literally teens - but it's ridiculous how butthurt people get over nothing

And being envious of a relationship implies they have someone you don't, for example a relationship. You really need to work on your reading comprehension Suit yourself. No no, please, allow me. I will endeavour to make good use of any opportunity to praise Ren's reading comprehension abilities. On many occasions have I found his ability to interpret things that just aren't there quite astonishing! Keep up the good work, my jolly good fellow.

  4. It’s an internet-wide phenomenon. I was on the Bethesda forums when their fanbase melted the joint for a year after Oblivion. The same thing happened with Mass Effect over the ending. More angst over Diablo 3. It’s happening all the freaking time these days, and yet the quality of the stuff we’re getting is consistently high. I remember the good old days when people voted with their wallet and didn’t whinge so much, it was much quieter… I should also point out to all those young hippies talking of boycotts and who think people power on the internet is all-rad: Bethesda faced a huge revolt from their loyal fanbase after they went in another direction with Oblivion -> look at the effect it had on Skyrim. Mass Effect faced a huge boycott over Mass Effect -> look at DA:O, in fact we were facing the ‘death of Bioware’ if you all recall. Boycotts only work when you have the majority of people on your side, more often than not you guys only have the noisy protest vote. I like to hang there when I'm in a certain mood, but I don't pretend it isn't a slummy place. I'm used to it though because RPGCodex is my favourite haunt and it's pretty much 4chan for old-school RPGers.

  6. Unfortunately that's just the way the internet is these days. It's the trend to act as offended as humanly possible at the smallest slight, and whenever something happens that people don't like, no matter how insignificant it may be, they yell and scream until someone addresses the issue. Or doesn't and then they forget a week later. edit: See above. lmao.

  7. Back on topic: I should point out that while Doddler doesn’t agree with their public relations behaviour (for obvious reasons,) he says the game looks much better in 1280x720 than it did at 800x600, even with the cropping. So there you go, an endorsement from someone many in the VN community respects and adores. Maybe that will calm the hyperbole over the issue. Cropping itself isn’t a bad thing. They seemed to have exchanged a higher resolution for less overall information. It becomes a bad thing if important aspects are chopped out, so some kind hearted guinea pig really needs to play through and offer some feedback for the fans (didn’t enjoy the VN so it won’t be me.) What does that have to do with anything. Doddler programs things, there's no reason to hold his opinion on artwork over everyone else's simply because he's more known. Personally I like to think artists put effort into the background just as much as they put effort into drawing the focus, so even just cutting out 'meaningless bits' is somewhat of a shame. Especially since it announced that the game was going to be upscaled, yet a lot of people wouldn't exactly call that an improvement if that means losing something else in return for it.

  9. I'm slowly coming to terms with Kickstarter being used for eroge localization. While Sekai Project has fudged it up, I think companies like Degica and MiKandi may actually use it for good without ignoring the eroge fanbase. Both companies have pledged to make the adult content available through official channels. That's good enough for me. I may be hesitant to fund these endeavors, but if other fans want to take the risk in my stead I have no reason to stop them. If it means we'll get more titles in English: please, take as much risk as you want! I'll sit quietly over here while these suckers hardcore fans subsidize a wider selection of titles at no additional cost to me.

  10. Zenophilious: Kickstarter may not originally have been intended to be used this way, but SP are hardly the first or the most high-profile ones to use it this way. If you'd preferred Kickstarter to stay limited to usage for its original intent, well, that ship has sailed. Doesn't mean you've got to throw any money at their campaigns, of course - I pretty much never do, either, though that's because I'm just not interested in them to begin with. But I don't think it matters at this point whether SP continues using Kickstarter this way. It's not like there's some sort of finite pool of Kickstarter money that would go to other projects if SP stopped using it. Moreover, Kickstarter is very well suited for the VN market since it allows the company to offer the main product combined with additional stuff at a much higher price than they could get from a sale on Steam. There's a decent amount of people in the community who, if given the opportunity, are willing to spend well over 100$ for a VN that by itself would cost at most maybe 40$, which makes VNs viable that otherwise might not be able to recoup the costs of localization. So it's not just a matter of pushing the risk onto the customers. Amusingly enough, that clashes a bit with the idea that the traditional eroge fanbase aren't their target audience. I'm pretty sure most people willing to spend a large amount of money on a single VN would be part of that audience. Well, maybe not 4chan in particular, no idea about them. Personally, the main problem I have with SP is that they don't outright say "yes, we'll publish an 18+ version of every VN we license that has one, as long as the developer will let us", which irks me, no matter the reason they don't. But in the end that just means they get no money from me unless and until they do publish the 18+ version. I guess I'd actually be pissed if they got their hands on something I really cared about and proceeded to release only an all-ages version, but that fortunately hasn't happened so far.

  11. So it came to my attention recently upon reading the G-Senjou no Maou CG thread that there are some members of the community who believe the Japanese developers are the ones responsible for setting restrictions on their games when they are delivered overseas. I want to clarify that point a little bit so people understand who is making all the decisions. A long time ago, Mephisto (an old member of Fuwanovel) and I did a live stream translation of Cocoro@Function! by Pulltop. After uploading some of the previous recordings we did to YouTube, I noticed that after a few months I got 4-5 copyright strikes and my videos were taken down. Pulltop yakuza jokes aside, I initially thought the company itself was the group who claimed my videos and had them taken down. It turns out that was not the case. In Japan, there is a group called the Ethics Organization of Computer Software (EOCS). Functioning much like the ESRB, it aims to promote a sense of ethical responsibility with respect to the production, distribution, and use of computer software. In this case, adult PC games and mobile games. To give you a better idea of what it actually does, here are some of its responsibilities: Support bishoujo gamesCombat software piracyProvide scholarships for students interested in becoming software designersRecognize good retailers (segregating games of different ratings, etc.)Essentially, this is the group responsible for setting the rules of distributing eroge. It functions much like a committee, meaning that every developer who is interested in selling their products in Japan must be a part of this group. They are also the group responsible for creating the "Japan Sales Only" label and are allowed to remove developers from their committee should they break protocol. In other words, the EOCS determines how games are localized overseas. If a company doesn't follow their strict set of rules, they are removed from the group and are no longer able to sell their games at retailers in Japan (i.e. = Sofmap). If you are interested in reading more about it, check out their official Japanese site that Mephisto and I browsed a long time ago: http://www.sofurin.org/index.htm http://www.sofurin.org/htm/topics/34.htm

  12. Lmao what the hell!? They deleted his thread too! Free speech and criticism isn't a thing anymore, didn't you hear? Yeah! 1984! Fahrenheit 451! Other books with numbers in them! This is the way business works, guys and gals. It's not always pretty, but it's how the sausage gets made. It's a combination of SP being unable to talk about certain things because of contractual/legal obligations PLUS them not wanting to embarrass their partners and thereby endanger future projects. I've done several ad campaigns for game releases involving Japanese developers and/or Japanese IPs. I've lived it. There are layers after layers after layers of red tape to go through before you're allowed to say just about anything. (And for the record, I'm not a fan of cropping CGs either.)

  13. A little "update" after a couple weeks. I really appreciate everyone who's dropped by this thrad and left their opinions and experiences. It's quite surprising how many different relationships you can with your siblings and I learned quite a bit from all this. (Mainly that there's no one single way to properly deal with your sister) After making this thread, I've become a little more proactive in talking to my sister, although we don't make much small talk yet. I mostly tend to listen to whatever she has to say, but I do try to talk back rather than just walking away now. I've begun helping her with her homework more frequently and actually staying with her in the room rather than just answering her when she has a question and leaving. This also led me to learn I suck at 5th grade math problems, but on that end both me and my sister could relate. Not much has happened since, but we are going to the movies this Sunday and, as some already suggested, this should be the easier way to get along without an excessive amount of interaction, so I'm looking forward to it. Not sure if anyone would be interested but I figured, as the one who made the thread, I'd let you know I did try to do something about the whole situation and things are going okay~

  16. Due to legal issues, on the advice of our lawyers, we cannot talk about WAS - NJ eta: We are still committed to delivering it, we just can't talk about what happened. https://www.reddit.com/r/visualnovels/comments/3rg7y9/sekai_project_and_rvisualnovels/cwnvo4o There's been problems with the Doujin group in Japan, so that project's been a bit of a clusterfuck it sounds like. Why should we accept that lame excuse? why didn't sekai project tell us from the beginning that it wasn't them managing the project. sic "All production work was managed by the circle initially. After September of this year we've taken over" Why did I back sekai when it wasn't them who were in charge of the project and why didn't they tell us on the KS page? And why did they make a contract with them if that was the case? Something isn't right. What does anything have to do with the fact that they uploaded an old patch because nobody really checked anything to begin with and then ignoring repeatedly everything related to that issue (deleting a post on steam that told them about that mistake) and a month later giving that shitty excuse of legal issues which isn't related to the bad management and poor service customer that they have, so did "the circle" manage their steam account and upload files for them? or did their lawyer advice them to do that too huh? Why did we get to know that they were having legal issues after 9 month of the project being delayed? Come on, stop defending something that cannot be defended. I will love to give a lame excuse like that in my life and get away with it.

  21. Like I said before: "People are just really bad at criticism on the internet even if they don't know it. A portion of the people genuinely have complaints but don't actually know how things work, resulting in unreasonable suggestions. Some simply complain because they want to stir shit up. And there are those who actually give helpful critique but are drowned out by all the flaming and complaining that really helps no one at all. Not to mention, most of the flaming is based on assumptions and ignorance." That said, there's really no reason or benefit to blatantly ignore good criticism unless your feedback is just really bad. People have written well-structured statements describing how SP needs to step up their PR game, and they have acted on that by hiring new PR people. So Scorp, I imagine you must have unintentionally said something that would make people think you are being confrontational. Maybe you could post a link or screenshot to the exact questions you posted.

  22. I can't really comment, tech stuff goes above my head, but it's not SP's decision, it would be the Japanese devs. Sounds like a feasible workaround (but I'm clueless,) but the people you'd need to comment wouldn't be SP. A general comment regarding 'wasting artist's/writer's efforts: So I wanted to expand on this a little because I tend to see it from time to time. To put it bluntly, if you’re the sort of person concerned overly about ‘wasting people's efforts’ then you can forget about being on the creative side of things in storytelling. One of the first things you are always reminded of in the process of telling a story, is to “kill your darlings.” It’s termed so because it’s extremely traumatic for some, and yet it is viewed to be for the betterment of your story. It means to kill your most precious, most beloved, most time-consuming pieces of prose, those pieces you spent weeks writing, rewriting, ironing out, and agonising over. That is because the most important thing is the story, and things must always be viewed with that goal in mind. The same sort of attitude is applied to art, and indeed all aspects of the development process. Relating this back to the issue in question, the VN company in question (I don't know the name, sue me ) has obviously decided that the story will be better received by this generation if it is in widescreen, and so it has made the decision to crop images. You can view it as a lazy decision, whatever, that's the decision they made to try and best convey this story to the West. You may not agree with it, but it’s the sort of decision made all the time during story development. If you shy away from these processes not wanting to waste ‘people’s hard work’, then your story will suffer. That doesn’t mean you’re not entitled to disagree with the decision, I’m not saying that at all. It DOES reduce information, it DOES feel like you're getting an incomplete copy, there COULD be other options available. Sure. What I AM saying is a) ‘the waste of artist’s effort’ isn’t a valid reason to leave material in, 'effort' is valued cheaply in these processes and b) to have some perspective on the issue. Everything related to SP is always overblown by the fans these days, and whenever they have an issue they use it as an opportunity to air all their grievances with the company and then Godwin's law is invariably applied, this time by Bats, and then we get sacrifices, and blood, and naked dancing, and it starts to feel like the weird parties we had in 1999... All the people who go on about authorial intent, wastes of effort, how the works of the creators should be preserved at all costs, and so on, would be utterly shocked at how games are made. You don't want to know how many committees look at the typical game's script and decide on what gets thrown out, what stays, and what gets drastically changed, based on a huge number of factors. I'm sure G-Senjou no Maou went through this process with the writing, art, music, sound effects, and voicework. Most creative works, including VNs, aren't made by individuals in isolation but entire companies. Some people looking at the CGs and backgrounds years later determining what else to cut is just another extension of this.

  23. I suggested this before to my sister, she completed only one route and switched all off, told "Booooooring and repetitive as hell". 24. Sure thing. The statement from SP was this: https://www.reddit.com/r/visualnovels/comments/3rg7y9/sekai_project_and_rvisualnovels/cwnvo63 It was in response to this: https://www.reddit.com/r/visualnovels/comments/3rg7y9/sekai_project_and_rvisualnovels/cwntsb5 EDIT: Doddler's was this: https://www.reddit.com/r/visualnovels/comments/3rg7y9/sekai_project_and_rvisualnovels/cwog2ut Well, that's just his opinion. We all saw screenshots of G-Senjou, and I cannot tell that I like how it looks on 1280 (apart the crop I do not like that screen became very empty, as before there were less width space, so characters looked good, now the scenes with only 1 character look empty). For the bottom text more width is better, as now character image fits perfectly, without text going over head. So I would still prefer old release, as in MY opinion it looks better - maybe just remove some unneeded interface buttons and that's all - but this I can do myself without problem, if I will ever want it - probably would release a patch one day for community with interface mod.

  27. The proof is the size of SP's catalog of available of future available titles. That's public. Of course their finances are not public, no company is going to get out the details of their finances for a couple of nerds to see. It's your right to think this is not proof enough but without any hint of counter-evidence at all it's irrational to claim what you claim. For god's sake, stop with this argument. Nobody sane in his mind will ever think that the next big place to make money is the translation of niche porn games from Japan and quit an actually profitable job to go for it. It's even worth than thinking you'll get rich by making Youtube videos. If you think dovac isn't a fan of VNs and just an opportunist, please consider the fact that he's also been hosting out of his own pocket some VN community websites for years, before he even started Sekai Project. Or that he helped a japanese company out of the red by lending them money with no ties to it. You have all the rights to dislike the man and probably many reasons to (he doesn't seem very likable after all) but to think he's in that game for money is ridiculous. Let me have my ridiculous opinion, ok? I do not believe dovac is the person who does things in sake of community, nowhere near. Dovac before and dovac now seems two complete different persons, he now got lot of conceit and egotism, at least this is how I see it. My mails with questions and suggestions got ignored, my opinion was ridiculed... I was initially very neutral, even positive towards Sekai. But after this mess with 18+ releases and talk with great dovac himself on vndb I got impression that this guy never care about audience he supposed to work for or even want to know anything apart money he got on KS (sort of that was told, I can find you quote, if you want). So by me it is your reasons to see him as white knight are kind of ridiculous, maybe because they still did not chopped to death your favorite VN? Mine was G-Senjou, this is why got so hyped before and so pissed off after.

  29. I think it would be best to get both sides of the discussion before making any decisions. For example, on Reddit SP has explained one of the bans by saying: The thread was deleted and user banned because the user started to spam the link to every discussion thread. As of a few hours ago, all bans were removed Taking a look at the initial post and it's fairly dickish and disrespectful manner of speaking, I wouldn't discount it. To put it another way, I make it a rule to not completely trust the viewpoint of those with an agenda to push.

  30. Oh, I wouldn't buy a censored eroge on Steam. You're preaching to the choir there. Sekai Project is clearly focused on non-adult releases, which isn't where my interests lie. Yet they haven't abandoned eroge fans either. Maybe there will be an adult release eventually? I don't want censored games, so that issue is more important to me than some clumsily cropped CG. So the other guy got banned too? Jeez. If that's how they're treating people then perhaps Sekai Project doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt. What is it with developers censoring criticism on Steam? Seems like a common theme recently. If it keeps up the Steam forums will be useless for objective discussion, since only pro-company opinions will be allowed. I heavily value free speech, and I'll personally boycott any company I feel is trying to suppress valid criticism just because it's bad for business. A veteran of VNDB was complaining that he didn't trust company forums because they had incomprehensible rules and censored dissent; I dismissed it as a bit alarmist at the time, but maybe he had a point. I've tended to hang out on company forums because they tend to attract interesting discussion and you get some insider info from employees, but Steam in particular is looking increasingly worthless as a community and forum for discussion.

  33. Never said their budget is unjustified, but whether they can actually attract the sort of funding they're asking for is another matter. What they may discover is that the English eroge market is still very niche and immature. Companies like JAST and MangaGamer are basically farming in the desert, in the hopes that maybe one day something nice will grow. Sekai Project has licensed a few high profile titles that managed to draw sufficient interest, but that sort of momentum is unsustainable. They'll run out of low-hanging fruit to pick before long. The English eroge market is a desert that simply can't sustain prolonged harvesting. MiKandi has to temper their expectations or their seeds will never bear fruit.

  36. Another reason I wanted to make this post is to help clarify why I believe a lot of Japanese companies don't want to have their games licensed. It isn't about being xenophobic like I have seen a lot of people argue. Rather, I think it comes down to the fact that these companies are afraid of breaking the rules of the EOCS and don't want to lose their retail rights in Japan.

  41. I seriously couldn't care less, since I'm not planning to buy it and I haven't actually bought anything from SP except for Nekopara, Fault and WEE. My current opinion regarding SP remains mixed. They did some nice stuff in the beginning, brought a couple of decent games (and I'm not even talking about Grisaia or any other AAA releases, I'm talking mostly about indie vn's), but at the moment it seems they're slowly turning into another corporate body, which isn't anything spectacular considering the ammount of work they're currently doing. Besides, did you ever expected Dovac to form SP only out of pure love for vn's? They've been in that business for a long time, for them it's already more about making a reasonable living doing the stuff they like, instead of being forced to do things you don't necesarilly want to, for the rest of your life. They will make decisions focused on maximizing profits and securing their financial stability, they won't care that much about a couple of opinions from a bunch of users on the internet. If they would, they'd already have their representatives on Fuwanovel for a long time and actively discuss about their work and lineups with the community. Sadly, some people also think Fuwanovel equals whole vn community, which isn't the case. Nevertheless, they don't really even need all the oldtime communities anymore, since they already have access to Steam. TL & DR: Those guys don't really care about your shitty eroges, nor your opinions. Move along.

Might as well read the VN. yep I will read white album because tokyo school is really boring so far and I'm not a fan of those booby physx that it uses xD Is white album 1 good? should I read it before 2? I read that it's a different story but maybe there is some relation between them. There is no direct relation at all between 1 and 2. IIRC, a song from 1 plays in two, that's it. Also, I prefer 2 over 1 anyways.

  45. Confession: All right Fuwanovel, I have a story to share with all of you. I have to tell it to you because my goodness, I am still laughing my ass off as I type this. So I'll let you know straight out, this is going to be a story about sex. If you aren't into that kind of stuff, feel free to skip it over because I don't want to make anyone feel uncomfortable. That being said, I am sure a lot of you might have guessed this by now, but my sexual life is filled with a plethora of hilarity. This story, after a year or more of no sexual activity, is no different. Do you remember the other day when I was talking about how I felt a little bit frustrated that I didn't have someone I could flirt with for fun? Well turns out my ex and I were talking about random stuff like we always do, and things started to happen earlier this evening. We ended up bringing up the fact that we were both sexually frustrated, and seeing as how we are single at the moment, we ended up hitting it off. One thing led to another and she drove over to my house to hang out. Mind you, this was at 1:30 in the morning. Now I say this because let's be honest, I don't know many friends that meet up during the early hours of the morning just to hang out. Well as you might have guessed, "hanging out" turned into "let's fuck" in no time flat. Now of course I didn't have any condoms on me when she came over. I mean, I haven't been sexually active for over a year or more, and the only reason she just so happened to be on the pill was for cycle control. So what did we do? We hopped in the car and headed into town to grab condoms at 2:00 in the morning of course! No big deal, right? The look on that cashier's face. As a young man, you always dread the day you have to go and buy your first pack of condoms. Imagine how I felt after doing this many times in the past, being 25 years old, and seeing the look of utter disappointment on her face. Simply dreadful. It didn't help that my ex decided it would be super awesome to come inside and buy them with me. That was a fun little chuckle they enjoyed having. My pride being destroyed aside, we ended up making our purchase (seriously, $20 for a pack of 36 at Walgreens?) and headed back to my place. Now being the horny little dogs we were, we threw our clothes on the floor and started going at it on my living room sofa. No problem! We finished up and decided to take a dip in my hot tub to relax. Of course she didn't have a swimsuit with her and I had no idea where mine was, so we ended up going in naked. By the way, did I mention I am currently staying at my parent's house? So things were going smoothly. The sex was great, and after spending a little bit of time in the tub, we decided that it would be a good idea to get busy once again. Now thinking I was the coolest cat this side of the Mississippi, I told my ex having hot tub sex would be fun. She agreed. Easy! So here's a tip to everyone: having sex underwater is extremely difficult. I don't know how many zero-g slams you've performed in your lifetime, but let me tell you that's the last time I consider trying that out. To give you an idea of how it felt, think beached whales. Each thrust meant floating an extra mile across the tub, and positioning meant somebody was going straight underwater in a pit of scalding hot liquid. To put it lightly, it sucked. So one thing led to another and we agreed it was impossible and a stupid idea. Of course we wanted to finish the deed though, because both of us having blue balls would have been pure torture. Our solution? We stood straight up and kept going at it! We both felt kind of kinky due to the fact that we were having outdoor sex while pretty much being fully exposed (you know, the whole voyeurism thing), and everything seemed to be going well for the most part. I use the word seem here because we all know there's more to this story. Turns out at 3:00 in the morning, my neighbor's dog had to go to the bathroom. Now seeing that his backdoor was on a porch overlooking his yard, you were easily able to look over into my yard and see what sorts of fun activities were taking place. In this particular instance, one would have been able to look over and see a certain individual plowing someone from behind. Good thing my neighbor had one of those dog doors, because who cares if the dog saw right? The next thing that happened quite literally felt like the longest minute of my life. My neighbor's dog started barking at the top of his lungs while watching me have sex with my ex. We didn't think this was a big deal because we could just easily sit down in the tub and pretend nothing was happening if the owner woke up to check on him, but of course, that wasn't the case. Dogs barking near my parent's house meant my dogs started to bark, and that was bad news bears. You see, even though I am perfectly old enough to make my own sexual decisions, I do not supersede my mom's house rules. When my dogs bark, it means they need to use the bathroom. It means that my mom needs to wake up and let them outside. It means they need to come near the hot tub. Danger Will Robinson, abandon ship! We ended up jumping out of the tub naked and sprinted into the house with our clothes. We rushed into my basement and waited until things calmed down. Luckily, my mom came downstairs and didn't bother me. She let the dogs outside and waited for them to finish their business. She didn't call to me in the basement or ask me to come and talk with her (keeping in mind we were both still naked). What a relief. So here we were laughing our asses off in the basement about what just happened, and even though we were practically dying, we both agreed that finishing up would be the best choice. I ended up bringing her into my room downstairs filled with all of my Japanese stuff and we ended up having more sex on my futon. Of course, she couldn't keep a straight face and was now laughing about how ironic it was that all of my 2D crap was surrounding us while we go at it. In the end, we didn't finish - she's was laughing too hard at this point. After that, we got dressed, talked for another half hour or so, and called it a morning. Now here I am typing this story that just happened. I have no closing words. My goodness.

  47. Do not fear, one of my many agents already redirected me here! I personally think we should appreciate the realism this game brings. The only possible reaction to a cute loli randomly destroying things through headbutts and kicks is to run and dance in your undies. I give this a liquid Would let the loli headbutt me all day long / no number is high enough to avoid being easily surpassed by this masterpiece. Silly Aaraon, this is the obvious and only logical evolution of Goat Simulator, not a parody! And with my job done:
