Whats the appeal of ntr?
Ramaladni and 4 others reacted to CeruleanGamer for a topic
Dafuq? Are you guys psychics or something? How did you guys know I'll be here? Anyways, CeruleanGamer the NTR Witch has arrived to educate you lovelies the beauty of Netorare. Not everyone who reads NTR are masochist. I am naturally a hard S when it comes to fetishes and pornography and NTR highly appeals to me because.... For me, the greatest appeal of NTR is the CORRUPTION ASPECT. Nothing is tastier than seeing a well mannered girl or even a strong willed girl become submissive once she surrenders to lust. It's just lovely to see. Most people have the notion that women are these pure and beautiful creatures who do nothing out of the ordinary, but the NTR genre pushes it out of bounds by mixing the powerful emotion of jealousy and depression to create a setting where your typical woman is now a lot hornier and sex crazed than the male protagonist. It's like an escape in real life because the current social outlook in real life is that men are perverts and are always thinking about sex. In NTR, it's different. You now have the girl who is hornier and is willing to surrender herself and become someone's plaything. There is this old saying: "Men want to sleep with the whore but want to marry the Madonna." NTR reverses that and makes the Madonna, the Mary Sue, the Yamato Nadeshiko, the prim and proper wife the whore and the mixture of corruption, exhibitionism, and voyeurism spices it up and doesn't make it as boring as your typical vanilla VN where it's just a meet n fuck, happily ever after setting. P.S. Thanks to @Nosebleed for summarizing the types of NTR. Glad I didn't have to write a couple more paragraphs for that.5 points -

I told a couple people I would post my thoughts about Sayonara wo Oshiete when I finished it, and just a few days ago I finished a bad end and Mutsuki's good end. So here are my impressions, thoughts, and analysis of that experience. Also, this post does not contain any significant spoilers to the VN. So its safe for all those that are curious. (Also from here on forward I will refer to Sayonara wo Oshiete as 'Sayooshi') Before I start talking about Sayooshi, I want to briefly describe the circumstances in which I discovered it. During this past summer, after having studied Japanese (with a grammatical focus) for a while, I wanted to get a few easy moege under my belt before attempting something I actually wanted to read. I was honestly having a miserable time, as I hate moege. I was reading them for no other reason than to practice and learn Japanese, as they were appropriate for my level. I wasn't having fun, and it honestly felt like work more than anything else. Just as I was about to give up on Untld Vns for the time being, I read a post by Vokoca talking about Sayooshi, and he linked to this video. The unsettling music and ominous imagery instantly piqued my curiosity and I set out to get this VN. For a while I was saving it, still thinking "My Japanese isn't good enough yet", but then at some point in the fall I decided "Fuck it, with the help of dictionaries and text hooking software, I can make this journey", and began reading it whenever I had time. And boy was this a journey worth taking, even if I did proceed through it a bit slowly. I love the first person narrative because getting inside the heads of interesting characters is truly experiencing the world through a different person's eyes. And VNs in my view are the best medium for first person narration, as they allow you to to see and hear what the MC experiences. Furthermore, back ground music enriches the story by immersing the reader in the moods of various settings and situations. Sayooshi takes all these strengths of VNs and the first person narrative, and uses it to put you inside the head of a madman. A man whose sense of reality is slipping further and further away by the day. The unreliable narrator is a literary trope that I really enjoy, but this is an area where I think VNs by default have higher potential than books. It is one thing to solely read the mind of a madman/untrustworthy narrator, it is another thing all together to see and hear that man's world, on top of reading his narrative. Too often I see wasted potential in the artistic side of VNs. Visual art is important for not only conveying ideas (i.e. a picture of a hallway should look like a hallway, a picture of a girl should look like a girl, etc.), but art can also convey moods. VNs of the same era usually have extremely similar character designs, and there is usually a lack of creativity in artistic style in VNs. While the character designs aren't anything revolutionary (it is admittedly nice that this VN came out before moe blobs became popular though), what is special about the art, is the eternal twilight. Hitomi's world is a world drenched in the orange and reddish hue of twilight, as the VN takes place exclusively during the evening. And coupled with all the things Hitomi experiences, the color of twilight really makes things even more ominous. It instills a feeling of loneliness, or at the very least detachment. Supporting the artwork in creating an unsettling atmosphere, is the music. The main theme that plays when Hitomi is wandering the school alone (this theme), only reinforces the feelings of detachment that the visual art and writing create. Character themes as well are quite well suited for each of the characters and the moods they represent, further successfully reinforcing the tone of the writing. Now onto the writing itself. Things are confusing, and they only get more confusing. Any sense of orientation is screwed around with, and this only gets worse as the story continues. You are left thinking "Did what I see actually happen?", until it gets to the point where you just altogether give up on distinguishing reality. In this way, you yourself submit to the insanity and fall further into Hitomi's world. Not knowing what to make of his situation. The only difference between you and him, is that you know he is crazy, but nonetheless identify with him because you experience the same sense of the world as he does. And perhaps weird to say, but the H-scenes in this VN serve to further sympathize with his madness. When I was telling a (non-VN reading) friend of mine about Sayooshi. He admitted that it sounded interesting, and even could appreciate the use of the H-scenes from an intellectual perspective. But he then told me that what he thought was truly disturbing, was not the use of H-scenes, but that "inevitably there will be people out there that will find it arousing". For him, (and his understanding of what I told him about Sayooshi), the sex scenes, which are exclusively rape scenes, serve to reinforce Hitomi's insanity, and therefore their portrayal is justified. But finding the scenes arousing yourself, is horrific as it is identifying with a monster; like the monster that plagues Hitomi's dreams. But it is here, where I disagree. The VN does everything in its power to have you identify with Hitomi's insanity, and the sex scenes are no exception. The sex scenes are arousing, despite knowing that they shouldn't be. It isn't just rape, but the Heroines are (supposedly) middle school girls for Christ's sake. Perhaps eroge players (particularly nukige fans) maybe a bit desensitized, but this is certainly fucked up. But just like when Hitomi experiences the dream that plagues him for the first half of the story, he knows he is the monster raping the angel, and there is pleasure still drawn from this. A pleasure that Hitomi knows is horrible and monstrous. But just as Hitomi submits to the role as the monster as he views his nightmare; we are in an identical role, viewing (and partly identifying) with his sexual misdemeanors as he commits them. It coerces you into submitting yourself to the madness of these H-scenes. By doing so an enjoyment is found in them, but for you and Hitomi alike there is a darkness implied in that pleasure. Furthermore, Hitomi seems to understand that he is defiling them. There is a guilt and sense of disgust felt, but also a feeling of extreme excitement, just as we as readers feel. This is shown through the multiple references he makes to 'contaminating the purity of the angel/Mutsuki', to paraphrase what he says. The H-scenes, and our feelings towards them, mirror Hitomi's perspective; furthering our identification with his insanity. Yet, just like the reoccurring nightmare, the H-scenes almost always end abruptly, and are divorced from continuity. It is not uncommon for an H scene to abruptly happen, end all of a sudden, and the next thing you know you are placed into a completely different context. And not only do the H-scenes lack continuity immediately before and after, but the characters never make reference to it afterwards, and act just as they did before. Further questioning whether they ever really happened. And this confusion surrounding the reality of the h-scenes, makes it easier to identify with Hitomi during them, since the normal consequences and damage caused by rape, do not apply. (Perhaps this would be a considered spoiler if I could guarantee that it actually happened ) And for all these reasons, I feel that the thesis of this VN is the fragility of the human mind. Often we draw huge differences between the mentally deranged, and functional normal human beings; but what Sayooshi points out is that the difference is actually rather subtle. In seeing the world Hitomi experiences, and sympathizing with him, it gets us to realize that we ourselves are not that different. That given his circumstances and what he experiences (and seeing it through his eyes), his reactions are actually understandable. The atmosphere of his world, and reading the thoughts of his mind, gets us to question his sanity, and in doing so, eventually gets us to question our own sanity as well. Sayooshi in an incredibly strong atmospheric experience. And it is for this reason that I feel Sayooshi is a great representative of the strengths VNs offer as a medium. This VN took advantage of all the tools it had as a VN (music, sound effects, visuals, and narrative) to provide a full experience of what the wanders of a madman look like. I really felt like I understood to a degree what it was like to be insane reading this work, and I don't think I would have been able to identify as well if it were told in any other medium in any other way.2 points

this is the only good thing I've read all day edit: Fuck it, I've been wanting to say this for some time. Cerulean, I really appreciate your contributions in threads like this. It's just that there's practically nowhere else where I see women open as you about their sexuality and fetishes. It's just a nice exception to see, one hell of an alternative viewpoint, and might as well go all the way and confess that I think it's pretty hot. I hate how most women don't show (or are forced to not show) their sexuality because I hate the perception "boys= hormone driven sex monkeys, girls= prim, prude beings who aren't so vulgar about sex, or anywhere as interested". As a man, I feel happy that there are exceptions like you out there. Thank you, Cerulean. Thanks for being able to be so open about yourself.2 points -

Would you guys want a Bishoujo English TL from Finnish to English?
Segai reacted to Arcadeotic for a topic
So, I've been thinking. As you may or may not know, Bishoujo Mangekyou -Norowareshi Densetsu no Shoujo- (https://vndb.org/v8038) got a Finnish translation a few dozen days ago, and I was thinking that it's a shame that it doesn't have an English translation. As I'm a native finn and have been studying English for a long time and have adequate skills in it, I thought it would be great to TL this title from Finnish to English. The quality of the TL will be unknown as I have only looked the Japanese text only so much, but the Finnish to English part would be completed fairly skillfully. I myself think it would be a great project for me at the moment, and it would help brush up my English skills. I have no experience in VN editing and such, so I will be only translating the title. Now, the question is if you, would want to see this come to reality? If you do, great. I will put up the website and such once the TL is in adequate state, and look for editors, quality checkers and so on. Please, do leave your opinion for somewhere me to see.1 point -

I remember our small conversation about NTR on Skype. I kinda shut it down before it could go anywhere, but I suppose now that I have a moment to collect my thoughts I can give my own opinion. I am also drawn to extreme negative emotions. I love despair. I love raw anger. I like watching as characters have their very being striped down to the core, and then fundamentally dismantled. However, I just can't get into NTR. Jealously will never be an emotion I will just be okay with. I've had a hard time enough mastering my own feelings of jealousy in the past, so I would just rather not go near something that has the potential of having me slip into old mental habits. Plus, you know, past events suck and all of that jazz. I had this weird thought the other day that maybe I should just read an NTR visual novel and see if I just randomly get over it. Wouldn't be the first time that the medium helped me change the way I think about something. ^^''1 point

That really blows. I mean, who wouldn't be depressed and whinny if their whole perception of the world and people changed to like something from Dante's Inferno. I feel like the whining is justified. On top of that, I don't even remember him being that whinny, more like irritable. Eh, it always gets under my skin when people completely over look the VN medium (-.-). Confession: I saw my mom reading fifty shades of gray and my blood started to boil, so I thought "why not making her read something actually good?" I re-installed saya no uta, recorded 1 hour and uploaded the video to youtube I cut before the first sex scene (nothing wrong with the first hour or so, not gore just pure good plot). So she read it and this is what she said "I didn't like it, the protagonist kept complaining and whining about his life, it was really boring, I didn't understand much of it" Then I proceeded to give her the book back and went to my room...1 point

sometimes is hard to understand why something is appealing to another person even if they explain it in full detail. I enjoy utsuge because it makes me feel alive when I read it, reading something that emotionally destroys me (the more sad and realistic it is the better) and recovering from that is what I like, something like a roller-coaster. it sounds weird for you probably but is like trying to explain why do you like certain food, you can describe it to some extent but why do you actually like that, why does your brain enjoys eating something in particular that's only something that you know and understand and nobody else will. Also remember that this is just pure fiction dont try to over-analyze it.1 point
-
Some people take pleasure from their more negative emotions. For instance, I gain pleasure from sorrow and intense despair, which is why I enjoy utsuge and nakige, but I also gain pleasure from the release of that sorrow and despair (the more intense the former is, the better the release is...). Generally speaking, if I can find a good utsuge and play it into the ground, the release from it will keep me psychologically stable for months. NTR is all about jealousy. In my case, jealousy isn't an emotion I enjoy, whether in release or in experience. However, I've known people who can't get enough of it.1 point

hmm. how bizarre. not to anyone who enjoys it but to people who enjoy the helpless feeling it provides. again not saying youre bizarre. im no masochists but i always thought that masochism is a form of trust that runs deep. a side that is only shown to a certain partner. also ヤミハナ i thought you location said "Living with your waifu" for a second. but there are other genres where you can see a woman getting corrupted without the process of it having a negative affect to a special partner. (it almost sounds like im saying "its ok that woman get mind break so long as no one else gets hurt.") i just dont get having a build up of two characters than a third party shows up to ruin it. even if the audience is aware that she does enjoy it in the end, its hard to get rid of that horrible feeling.1 point -
The appeal is the feeling of jealousy NTR inspires. The appeal of it could be likened to why people go for nakige. Good NTR makes you feel trapped, helpless, depressed. It manipulates your emotions and features unique sexual situations. It provides a striking contrast to vanilla moe, and that makes it interesting, especially when the elements are combined together in one work. The best NTR is the type where the NTR is a bad end of sorts, or where the NTR is unavoidable but you can still get a 'good end'. School Days is a good example of effective use of NTR, since Makoto is forced to choose between pursuing both girls at once or getting one of them NTR'd. The threat of NTR creates dramatic tension that enhances the storyline and forces the player to make tough choices.1 point

I finished the whole thing last night before I slept. I decided against posting about it before I slept, since apparently I lost the ability to form coherent words after reading the last few scenes. Honestly, I did not expect that. Everything just exploded at my face. Like ugh. It just gushes deep inside of me, you know? Anyway, I'll put my thoughts about Chapter 6 to 8 for now. I'll try to provide a more coherent reaction to whatever I finished reading. Don't worry, it wasn't bad. It was good imo. Here goes Chapter 6: Chapter 7: Chapter 8: Chapter 9: I put Chapter 8 and 9 because they're pretty short. Anyway, enjoy the rest of the novels, guys. I really enjoyed reading it, and am glad that it was the one picked by the club. It's kinda funny that I finished it even before the initial impression week started, but eh. I was talking about this with xreaper, if you look at really old vns (90') you will find a lot of detective ones where there is a murder just a few minutes in, you will even see some of the main characters get killed, they are very explicit with the violence and you have adults protagonist, now you wont find a detective vn anywhere... most of the vns that are released this days are nukige or just moege, everything is the same... the typical plot: "school boy with her old childhood friend doing stupid things in the school where nothing important happens" maybe it was the same back then but I think there was more variety too.1 point

Some of it is that and some if it is for the same reason there are usually only three to five chuunige releases a year (in 2015 there were only two)... to put it simply, wanting to luxuriate in others' sorrow and despair is an acquired taste, so that makes it niche. I like utsuge but most people don't. Just as a clarification, dark rapegames like the Yukikaze/Asagi series don't count as utsuge. Those games exist to satisfy extreme sexual fetishists rather than for emotional catharsis.1 point
