  3. It seems that if Aselia the Eternal sells well on Steam JAST USA may think about going back and adding a patch for the h-content to be put back in. Jan 27 @ 4:39pm H-Version I'm aware that all english versions are without H-scenes. Will there ever be a version with the missing H-scenes because Eien no Aselia -The Spirit of Eternity Sword- and Eien no Aselia Expansion -The Spirit of Eternity Sword- both cointain H-scenes. Hopefully you will release a patch or a full version (missing H-scenes are missing content so no full game, even if they are unimportent and/or forced). Showing 1-15 of 15 comments JAST USA [developer] Jan 27 @ 6:54pm It's definitely possible, just not something we're currently working on for Aselia. With the version on Steam of course it is the non-H version. After we're finished with releasing Seinarukana, we'll revisit Aselia and its H content.

  4. Unfortunately, I could not disclose many of NOBY's biggest faults due to them deeply involving story spoilers. I wanted everyone to read this review, so I needed to keep it spoiler-free. But on the forums there are spoiler tags! Now, you will no longer have to put blind faith into my words, but will be able to see for yourself just how bad this shit gets. Onto the insanity of the Megumi route we go! To be clear, these are very major spoilers. Wow, that became one hell of a wall of text. BTW, all of that happens in the span of about 60-90 minutes, because that's how long the routes are. Extremely rushed.

  5. Hi, it's me again. I received a lot of feedback from you and others and decided to revise my survey. This means I changed some questions and added new ones (stolen from a reddit survey...). I would be very happy if you could retake it! Sorry and thanks! In case anyone is wondering, I got admin approval to open a new thread. Here we go: https://www.soscisurvey.de/visualnovels Some information: 1) hours played has now more realistic options 2) Some questions now have more options 3) Some questions still are single choice (therefore "mainly/mostly" etc.) Here is the main reason: For most questions I need a "Yes" and a "No" answer. Sometimes "Yes" has multiple options. The problem is that the survey only allows single choice or every(!) answer to be multiple choice. This means you could both tick one or more "Yes" answer(s) AND the "No" answer. This would invalidate the question or maybe the whole survey if it happens frequently. I'm also posting the survey to reddit/4chan etc. and to be honest I'm afraid that this would get abused. The only other option is to make two questions out of one which would inflate the survey and make it boring. I only did this for "how do you procure visual novels". I thought about doing the same for the question how you consume it (japanese, englisch patch etc.) but oh well... 4) I have a question about the rating of visual novel translations. Most people said this is hard to answer because "it depends". So I added a new question to give you a chance to rate JAST, MangaGamer, sekai project, fan translation groups etc. In the end I realised that I would get a rating for the companies but fan translation groups is again a "it depends" (maybe use 9 = I don't know). As I can't delete the question anymore I will either only use the data from the companies or exclude the question alltogether from the evaluation. I hope you enjoy the new survey a little bit more than the old one and sorry that I couldn't fix all your concerns! Thanks!

  8. RPGs are quite similar to sims, which in turn are related (historically) to VNs. Now, the main difference between an CRPG and a sim is the inclusion of a combat system. Technically in the offline world you can have RPGs without a combat system. I doubt anyone wants me to go into detail about why this isn't the case in CRPGs, but in short CRPGs historically only sought to imitate the combat systems of offline RPGs, while this was happening sims grew and incorporated many attributes of offline RPGs, and these days an RPG without a combat system tends to be called a sim. Examples include 'Long Live the Queen' and 'Academagia'. Questing and mini-games don't make an RPG. They're sometimes found in RPGs, but you could argue that this is because RPGs came from a background of 'user defined stories.' In fact, some people define an RPG to be a form of interactive narrative. VNs can also be a form of 'user defined story' because at its heart it's a form of interactive fiction - the choices in a story offer opportunities for this sort of interactivity, but this is an aspect that the Japanese industry doesn't really take full (or any) advantage of (to my disappointment, and probably to the medium's detriment.) Because RPGs and VNs can both offer 'user defined stories' then naturally some aspects of one can be applied to the other. I don't see evidence of a combat system in the game, and therefore I don't see evidence that it is an RPG. It COULD be a graphic adventure, but graphic adventures are games with a) a narrative, b) puzzles, and c) exploration.

  10. It's not just WE3. Shiny Days ended up the way it did in part because Sekai Project was busy with other projects and didn't have time to fix it. It had JAST's name on the box, and JAST took the fall for the problems, but Sekai Project was doing the work. Sekai Project is taking on more projects at once than they can handle, and that's a recipe for poor quality and delays.

    Yosuga no Sora review

Nice to see people looking forward for our translation. I might just add in a little bit of hope for those waiting for a nicely edited version and fully translated version. Since I'm checking the translation on Nao's route(I also translated it), I'll also be checking the translation on the common route and for Sora as well. Then, I might move to doing other routes if the TL would want me to take over their script. As for now, I'll just do my best to finish TLC'ing Nao's route. Onee-san route is life!

  12. I think a lot of the people who vote in this polls just look at the covers of the vns, the score (which doesnt tell you much about a vn because tastes are not the same for everyone most of the vns I really really like have a really low or average score.) or the titles and if it sounds familiar or is a popular series (baldr force is the perfect example of this) they vote it, granted there is no way to know how good a vn is if there is no translation available in the first place but voting for those reasons is just a waste imo. I'm still amazed on how everyone voted sakura no uta when probably nobody yet played subarashiki "sca-ji's masterpiece"(many many of the people who read it said that they didnt understand a lot of the plot but because scaji is a genius is a 10/10 vn, so yeah is masterpiece just because..or going as far to say "SCA-Ji is far more intelligent than anyone reading this blog entry, including myself." lol) or any of the sca-ji's vns in that matter and the only fully translated vn available that can tell you a bit of his writing is ikikoi which i dare you to say is a masterpiece... Im just venting a bit ignore my entire post xD

  17. This is a thread for discussing Ayakashibito, as the title proclaims. Ayakashibito is considered a genre-crossing classic by many Japanese vn-lovers, and amongst chuuni fans, it is considered to be a masterpiece. All of the characters have their own attractions, and some of the antagonists are as compelling - or even more so - than the protagonist and his friends. As I haven't played the translated version, I don't know the degree to which the game's original essence was retained, but I am glad that the English-speaking community will now have a chance to play this great game. This game also shows off sides of humanity that are - quite frankly - ugly as a one-eyed ogre with a hunchback. However, that only adds to this game's story and the overall setting. WARNING: For people who prefer 'soft' VNs, where everyone - and I mean everyone - lives happily ever after, you should probably avoid this game. (that means you, Steve). Lolicons will probably love the game's resident true heroine and eternaloli, Suzu, but I'd warn against using a game complete save to go straight to her path. There are aspects of the game's setting that are addressed more completely in the other paths, and the true path is more rich for having played them in order.

  18. Transforming what we expect from the OELVN market Whenever I talk to communities that play visual novels, there is always a kneejerk reaction when you say OELVN. To many, they are the bane of the visual novel world. All of the player base agrees that there were many well done and even groundbreaking OELVNs developed but for the most part, they are done poorly and use common tropes that can be redundant at times. The fact of the matter is that OELVNs tend to be indies, have much lower budgets then Japanese VNs, and do tend to stick to the script more than change things up. This is why I am writing this now. I am pioneering a movement to completely recreate what it means to be an OELVN. Many may say, “That is too ambitious for an indie” but I will not be stopped. Months ago I launched a kickstarter for my game but I didn’t invest enough capital to get quality art so it was ignored. This was entirely my fault. I then adapted and started making sure my original and very different idea was presented with all the bells and whistles needed to grab the attention of the player base. With that attention, I can begin to explain what I intend to do to change the game. OELVN to Western VN An OELVN is not much different from a Japanese VN. In fact, they are so similar that people that know of OELVNs tend to call them low budget or indies as a bad stigma. There are exceptions like Unwonted Studios and Winterwolves but for the most part, the stigma is very real. What is my solution to this? Make a Western VN. How can you compare or stigmatize something that has no equivalent? If it has no equivalent then you must judge it based on your own personal experience with it. There are many American developers out there that try to place stories in japan and use the common. The setting of my game is in the ancient middle east. It also has elements of the ancient alien theory and historical references of many different pantheons during the time of 3500 BCE. This has never been done before, not even in video gaming as a whole. But to understand why it Is different, we must look into individual changes that make the experience different from a normal VN. Art Style Since the story is different, more serious, and from a certain period, we chose to use art that looks digital but has a comic like styling to it. All armor, clothing, and backgrounds are based on alien technology and period architecture/writing. Music We tend to make most songs fit the location of the game but we do not allow that to stop us from adding a few Asian songs to capture the mood. The music is intense and matches the flow of the game. Flow The game has short chapters spanning no longer then 10 minutes each. There is a world map and different type of quest which require tactical decision making and exploration. There is very little internal monologue and the viewpoint is omniscient even though you only control the main character. It will feel like mini-episodes of a very big series where you develop characters and become attached to their own personal goals. Relationships Unlike in other games with a BxG relationship in the genre, we have incorporated a very different mechanic to how ours works. First, you as the main player will be competing for the love of the female lead. Your actions can cause her to love or hate you and the other character’s actions can do the same. You can very well FAIL to get the girl and even more, lose the girl to your rival. Additionally, all the characters in the game will react, listen, and follow you differently based on the reputation you acquire throughout the game. Your decisions will make them great allies or reasons for your death! Insanity The main character has psychological issues that he must conquer. Throughout the game you will come across spirits messing with your mind and as a result, you must either embrace these ideas or suppress them. By embracing them, you gain new powers that are extremely powerful BUT by giving away your autonomy, you also lose the ability to think rationally in situations where you have to use self-control. Questing Unlike other games which stick to one type of mini-game throughout the story, Black Sands offers many. There will be investigations, tracking missions, and random skill check progressions. Each one requires a completely different set of skills. Exploration The world lore of Black Sands is deep with mystery and discovery. While the player can choose to stick to the main path of the story, they will most likely engage in the side stories to discover the secrets of the rift. Every secret unlocks a journal entry and we have an in game encyclopedia that will explain all the lore. Historical References When you unlock lore entries, you get the real world context from which it was created including sources. This adds a level of education to a fantasy game that is never done. Main Character A common complaint about VNs as a whole is the main character being too needy and weak. In this game, the main character is a vicious fighter with an exceptional command over people. He suffers from Dementia but focuses himself using “knowledge of self” and meditation. You as the player will tell his story in your own personalized journal which will be sharable online. Victory Conditions In Black Sands, every turn cost time. Events happen based on the time and when you meet an obstacle for the first time, you get a progress bar on the top right. The more you learn about the obstacle, the more “confidence” you have you can deal with it. This helps you in the events that happen when you take on that challenge OR when that challenge decides to take on you. If you do not prepare well, you may be forced into a very bad situation but if you prepare for the coming enemy etc, you will succeed. Theme We incorporate ancient Kemetic-Kushite, Canaanite, Akkadian, Minoan, Greek, and Hindu mythology into the Black Sands universe while tying them all together with the ancient alien theory as the base. This will bring new fans to the genre as the ancient alien gaming world is an untapped market and the cultures of the middle east and black community would love to have heroes that look like them. Thus, we are moving forward, ever aggressive and ever vigilant. If you have any questions or critiques, please comment below.

  19. Hey there . Just wanted to share an issue of mine with everyone. People always say to try out new things, which is totally cool, but I find that once I love something, I want to do that over and over instead. Travelling would be the simplest example. I went to Melbourne a few years ago, loved the place, and now I enjoy visiting every year. Once in a while, I might also check out a new country for the first time, but I still find myself more excited over revisiting cities like Melbourne, because that connection is already there. I made a game out of the place, so enough said I guess. Just wanted to bring it out into the open and see if anyone has similar feelings, or if you think this is a bad attitude, etc. I recently listened to a Doom documentary called the Masters of Doom. This is my favorite all time game, and I admire John Romero and John Carmack a lot. During the documentary, they mentioned that one of the Johns love keeping everything and remembering the past, while the other prefers to look ahead and never holds much sentimental value for anything. Both guys are of course pretty successful to say the least, so this kind of talk made me interested enough to open this topic. How do you folks approach this type of thing? Thanks .

  20. There's a clearly visible line between the two - it's called "gameplay". Errr, no. They aren't exactly known for having the sharpest storylines (especailly Kamidori), their gameplay is their main selling point and it's the main reason why they are popular. Can hybrids like this make VNs more popular on the West anywhere? When VN-aspects are their weakest aspects and they are mainly enjoyable as SRPGs? Now, I like hybrids or pure games. There's nothing wrong with those genres. But when I'm in the mood for a VN, I won't touch a hybrid. Because I want to read, not play. When I see something advertised as a VN, I expect a VN. When the description promises a lot of gameplay and other non-VN features, either it isn't exactly a VN, or the description emphasizes insignificant mini-games too much and is misleading. But you generally don't call Swiss Army knives just "knives". Because they aren't just knives, they are multi-purpose tools. Would you pick one of those if you wanted specifically a knife? No - a dedicated knife will do a better job. You can advertise Swiss Army knife as "primarily a knife", but then you get something that actually kinda sucks at its "primary function" (compared to dedicated knives), so that's not a very good idea. Just like hybrid VNs aren't really that good at being "just VNs" (or are very bad, like Kamidori or Tears to Tiara for example). But they offer gameplay, and that's usually their main focus. While they don't really excel at anything, mixing aspects of multiple mediums can make them good as a whole (just like Swiss Army knives are great, even though their individual parts aren't that good). Black Sands either did a bad job at advertising a VN, or a good job at advertising a game (or a game/VN hybrid maybe?). I'd actually prefer if it was the latter - Western VNs suck most of the time, but we do a damn good job at making various indie games.

  21. personally i found its visuals to be quite fitting the rather dark & fairly depressing plot due to their contradictionary nature which further emphasizes the pretty melancholic read, especially in those parts which are nothing but surreal at best, somehow reminding me at the ones from kusarihime. anyway back to topic, though there are few stories which are thematizing similar issues like cross channel, yume miru etc, of which the western scene is quite fond of, i simply cant see them all going full kyun over a story of totally broken/addicted people only, when there isnt a huge hmm lets call it entertainment factor. admitted if one totally shuts down oneselfs mind whilst reading said novel than its going to be a fun ride, but yeah, to most people or rather for those with a functionable limbic system it will be more of a educational read. edit: from an economical point of view i cant see mg (or whoever) decide on churning out one niche & therefore less profitable tiltle after another, as sad as that may sound. edit2: i´m weird so dont follow my logic. much appreciated

  23. Not going to lie but the fact someone from Sekai Project came into this thread to talk with some of the community is a huge positive in my eyes and despite my harsh criticisms and my tsundere tendencies towards sekai project as a whole I have to admit this was a good move. I likely would not have backed MikandI's project had they not had someone come in here to try and push for their game and the same would have been true for this. The fact someone has for root double is nice because I have fewer issues backing it now (wish there was a paypal option though). I'm still going to be extremely critical and cautious for other games and kickstarters as a whole but this one I'll go ahead and put in some faith. I'll at least be able to check it out sooner rather than later.

  26. I dont care what people say about VNs with RPG elements on it. One thing I know is we have a huge community of VN readers like myself who embrace VNs that have a dual purpose of storytelling and gameplay. Not all VN readers want to sit on their asses having their VN on auto mode while masturbating all day. Some prefer some more interaction with the game. I dont care if it's an RPG element or making the girl's boobs jiggle if you click on her sprite. While Kamidori and Sengoku Rance arent exactly known for having the sharpest gameplay/RPG aspect, they are successful VN games because they incorporate RPG elements quite well and make the VN addicting because of it. If you can create a nice and smooth RPG gameplay that makes it rewarding rather than grindy, then you can make it successful. Some examples to put this into action are: Like whenever the player gets a rare item or finish a quest, you slap an awesome "kaching" or epic trumpet sound and boom, people actually feel more accomplished about it despite all the hard work and long hours they spent to get it. Another example is using a collection system where it records all the completed quests, achievements, trophies, items and possibly characters recruited. Many VN readers are hoarders and collectors by heart and if you can incorporate a way for them to keep track of their progress in the RPG side of it like with the CGs, then it would really make them more engaged with it. Hope this gave you some ideas on the RPG aspect. Feel free to reach out to me personally via PM if you need some more ideas or questions about incorporating the RPG aspect into your game. @Black Sands Entertainment

  29. Tbh, the entire "Your VN is an RPG, not a VN." is kind of a redundant argument. There's no clearly visible line between the two. There have been games that were on VNDB and then taken off because people thought they were "Not VN enough, too RPG-ish". I've played the demo of the original game, and while I know a lot is going to change and a lot of RPG elements are going to be added, I can safely say Black Sands knows what a VN is and is clearly planing on making one, he doesn't need someone to define the medium for him (the original game was in Ren'Py for crying out loud). Also @Lumaria, there's a difference between giving helpful critique/suggestions, and pushing your own views and opinions of what a "glorious genre redefining VN" is down people's throats. So you have a great idea, nice. Suggesting it to people is fine, but almost ordering them to follow your vision, and belittling them if they decide otherwise? Not so nice. If you think your idea is so great please make this VN yourself. As the guys from Extra Credits once said, "Ideas are cheap. Everyone has a good idea or two".

  36. I would not be surprised if this review ends up being the lowest-scoring one around. Yet, I was entirely honest and made no exaggerations on the work or on my feelings. Several of the points I brought up may have been subjective, but I think I pointed out enough solid objective shortcomings to substantiate my claims and back up my opinion. It's brutal, but I see no point in holding back if I truly dislike something. It would do a disservice to the readers who expect honesty from us.

  39. @Rooke especially because its from the creator of spice & wolf it deserves a better treatment than that. the first one suffered from a non optimal translation paired with partly unnatural wordings & its second one was blessed by countless typos plus an english i dont want to read in a work of literature other than in magazines etc. both ones appear pretty unpolished & raw, nothing i´would like my customers to read for non risking their reading experience to be foiled (not everone re-reads stuff so their pretty much stuck in the fuck by time the re-translation etc will be done & even then, the first read is the most important one) this is not only about sekai, but in general, if i buy something i expect it to be done in the best way possible and wont accept some halfbaked stuff. "we´ve been already past our estimated schedule" is nothing that works on me, getting it even later to read wont piss me off as much as some rushed crap for whatever reason it may have happened

  40. Reputation gets you free marketing and customer loyalty. Nothing is more valuable to a company when it can get something for free instead of wasting resources on it. Should we just let Sekai Project do whatever it wants then? Heck if SP dies/goes bankrupt, everyone else's market share increases and possibly motivate other companies to go the extra mile, so I actually don't care if they go bankrupt (highly unlikely though, they got too many supporters). SP isn't exactly a monopoly here. Sure they provide some quality VNs but without you, me, and the customers buying their products, they wouldn't be where they are. You should be more confident of your ability as a consumer/buyer and voice out your opinion instead of taking everything right up the ass and letting SP dominate and releasing all this half-assed products and falling for their false promises.

  42. As much as I want diversity in VNs, it should not be the selling point of a VN. Look at what happened to Resident Evil 5 when they started the setting in Africa... Last thing you want your VN/game to be called is racist... Yeah, it is unfair but people are so feeble minded and the internet can easily make something that is normal into something combustible. Unfortunately race/gender card gets thrown into the mix all the time like a nasty mother fucker, but if you can prevent it, the better. If this VN's setting is in Egypt or some foreign/alien land, it should follow suit. That means, no adding blondies, French nobility, some Mexican guy, or Asian people into it for the sake of appeasing to the social justice warriors. Because last thing you want is these mother fuckers getting involved.

  43. Trails of Cold Steel is just too good. I have the "damn I like this game"-feeling going on all the time. The main party members have their characters fleshed out and presented so well that you grow really fond of them, quite like in Persona. But on top of having awesome main characters the side characters and the whole world is really fleshed out. Too often in games it feels like everything revolves around you, but in Cold Steel there's this feeling that you're just one small part of the world. Whether it's new political movements, seeing your neighbors flirting every morning or listening someone from other class ranting about new radio program; it all adds up to this wonderful sense almost living game world. Talking to every single character is really worth it. There's so many cool little details you'll miss if you don't. I learned my lesson in Chapter 2 when I realized I missed two chapters of Red Moon Rose. (I wanted to read them...) Some scenery shots: And other random shots

  44. This is one thing I think we sorely need. The most genre I love in Western Novels is Historical Fiction. Books like Percy Jackson, the Kane Chronicles, etc are what I enjoy the most, and what I would love to see in Visual Novel format. The black community also needs to be educated on its own history, so by doing this you're really hitting two birds (at least) with one stone. I've never supported a VN through kickstarter before, but I think I'll be changing that in regards to this very VN. You have all my support, really looking forward to the completion of your project I recommend you check out the Kane Chronicles in particular as it's based around Egyptian mythology.

  45. Let me put a public disclaimer before I go in on this post. I do not respond in a hostile way to almost all critiques but this was not a critique, it was a character assassination on the level of Trumpism. It seems you read my entire script and all my references through your Byakugan eyes. I will shred your critique apart since it was a hostile attempt to sound educated while belittling me. "Akkadian is a language for ancient Mesopotamia people, not a culture." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akkadian_Empire The Akkadian Empire was the empire that predated the Sumerians. Next. "Kushite Religion is very limit, there is basically no research done on it." The reason its called Kemetic-Kushite culture is because they were one and the same. They worshipped the same gods, exchanged gods, and had the same cultural norms. "you will run into Canaan vs Bible reference battles, its best to understand why the two are not the same." I am using the book of enoch as my reference since historically it is based on both the biblical and canaanite religious bases. All historians agree on this. Additionally, who said this game was about the bible? Not I. "Hindu mythology is way different, it never has been connected with the bible while everything else has in some way shape or just plan added." "We incorporate ancient Kemetic-Kushite, Canaanite, Akkadian, Minoan, Greek, and Hindu mythology into the Black Sands universe while tying them all together with the ancient alien theory as the base. This will bring new fans to the genre as the ancient alien gaming world is an untapped market and the cultures of the middle east and black community would love to have heroes that look like them. " https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_astronaut_hypothesis So unless you somehow missed the multiple references to the ancient alien theory or just have no clue what it is, you should not be saying how my research is off.I would not say Elves from the lord of the rings is not the same as "elves from the norse mythologies therefore tolkien is an idiot.:" He wasnt writing about ancient Norse mythology. He based his writings on it. I am done.

    Hello New Friends! :3

Hi everyone! I registered here a couple days ago to hop in and provide some support and feedback on the Root Double thread. I suppose it's best to come right out and offer full transparency to everyone: I work with Sekai Project as their PR manager for the western half of the globe (primarily North & South America with a little dash of some EUR media outlets sprinkled in the mix). I'm certainly not looking for any special treatment. Not at all. I feel that it's better that everyone knows my role so they can ask questions or just take some comfort in knowing that I'm here to assist when and however I can...within reason of course. Don't be expecting me to reveal release dates. I've been a long-time anime fan -- all the way back to my very first anime, Iczer-One. This was back in the late 80s, before I even knew what anime was. In fact, I just posted about it earlier today on Twitter. And for those of you who have yet to watch the anime series, let's just say that it was certainly one heck of a way to be introduced to the medium. In addition to anime I've been an avid gamer since the late Atari 2600/early NES days, and wound up getting into the game industry with a job testing games for Sony back in '03. Shortly after that I fell into PR and that's pretty much what I've been doing ever since (with a short stint in production). Anyhow, I'm rambling. I just wanted to officially say hello, and that I look forward to speaking with all of you about anime, games, or whatever you'd like to discuss. I'm always up to shoot the breeze, so please feel free to reach out to me either here or via social media. Cheers, David
