VNs: Guilty pleasures
CeruleanGamer and 5 others reacted to VirginSmasher for a topic
I don't feel guilty about any of my pleasures. In fact, I parade them instead of hiding them. What's the point of feeling guilty over them? They're what you like and if people make you feel guilt over liking them, tell them to fuck off.6 points -

Hi I am new to the visual novel community but I like them a lot. I plan on uploading a bunch of visual novel lets plays on my channel such as Danganronpa and Steins;Gate. I uploaded an indie visual novel as my first visual novel and I was wondering if some of you guys could check it out and give me some feedback. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btE7bAIeL4Y Thanks2 points

My team, Alienworks, is going to be releasing a short yuri VN in a couple months. I'm a little bit late on the whole thread creation thing, since we announced the project back in September, but what can ya do? So first off about us, then I'll get to the good parts. As you might know, Alienworks has another project going on, The Human Reignition Project, which you can see in my signature. That's our main game. HB was a side project started by myself and one of the other writers, and is way smaller in scope. That other writer is Syon, Setsuna's writer for HRP. Then we have Jake Abernathie and Anna Logue composing the soundtrack, with our programmer Kevin Turner putting everything together. Art is handled by Rosuuri, Shiyun and Myuto, who also work on HRP. Badriel is doing the backgrounds, and we also have a number of CG's being completed by Weee/Raemz, best known for her work on Katawa Shoujo. While they're both a little bit lacking, we have a VNDB entry as well as our own website. Here's our little blurb about the project, taken from the Steam Greenlight page, which should be up in the next week or so. Developed by Alienworks, Highway Blossoms is a short lesbian (or "yuri") story set in the American Southwest. After an old gold rush miner's journal is discovered, supposedly detailing where he hid parts of his stash, a nationwide craze begins as would-be prospectors try to solve its clues and strike it rich. Amber couldn't care less. Wandering the desert in a recently-inherited motorhome, she mourns the loss of her grandfather - indifferent and unaware to the hunt happening around her. It's not until she meets Marina, a young hitchhiker lost in New Mexico that the girls get swept up in the rush. A tribute to music and Americana, Highway Blossoms is a linear visual novel experience. With an emphasis on romance and adventure, the game is sometimes somber and sometimes silly. We hope to write a game that both long-time VN fans and newcomers to the medium can enjoy, as well as a fun contribution to the yuri genre. Right now, we're hoping to have the game out in mid-April, though it's still a bit too early to announce a definite release date. We've got a first draft of the script done, as well as all the backgrounds, half the soundtrack, half the CG's and a few of the sprites. All the other things are moving along pretty quickly though. When it's done, it'll be on Steam with a free uncensor patch available, or alternatively you can get the DRM-free adult version on Denpasoft. It's not an eroge or anything like that, but there are a couple sex scenes. The emphasis is on romance and adventure though. Similar to what we did for the HRP demo, we're going to be putting together a guest art gallery for anyone who might want to participate. You can get all the details from the document linked in this tweet. Retweets and shares are much appreciated. As always, thanks for reading!2 points

If I were you I'd make sure I did my research on each game / company I considered making videos off before actually doing anything. You don't want your channel getting copyright strikes right off the bat. Also, try to make sure you do something unique with the "gameplay". If it is literally just the VN and no commentary or anything of the stort, then its like I said above, pretty much just stealing the vn.2 points -

Shoujo City 3D (alpha release)
Noir reacted to Laika Karou for a topic
Shoujo City is a dating simulator game for Android, developed by me. It's not a pure VN, but rather a mix of RPG+VN. You have ten days to try and win love of a girl by giving her gifts, playing games, or going to regular dates. While talking to a girl, each dialogue choice affects your intimacy score. Each girl has a different personality and requires a different approach. Gameplay video: Even though the game is released already, it's still updated with new features and locations on a regular basis, so if you have some suggestions on improving the game, feel free to post. ) Shoujo city: iOS: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/shoujo-city-anime-game/id1128360282 Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.laikastudio.shoujocity Shoujo City 3D: http://shoujocity.com1 point -
MangaGamer will no longer offer Steam Keys due to fraudulent purchases
kingdomcome reacted to Nosebleed for a topic
MG blog post: http://blog.mangagamer.org/2016/02/15/pay-processor-issues/ tl;dr Because of people making fraudulent purchases in order to obtain Steam Keys and re-sell them, MangaGamer has been forced to remove their Steam Key offers for the foreseeable future until a better solution comes. It really sucks that people pull this kind of shit off. On top of that, because of the currently existing chargeback policies, whoever is returning the money is always on the losing end no matter what they do. I totally understand and agree with MG's move here and I even sympathize with them, but it's still sad I won't be able to get a Steam key to give to a friend (or giveaway) whenever I buy a game from them anymore. Really hope this helps mitigate the damage for them though.1 point -

That may be the case indeed Not only that but keeping the audience interested for that long of a time lapse will prove hard to do...for the commentary not to grow stale or the pace of it to be slowed you'd have to come up with a certain type of entertaining commentary or something to aid you and lift it up a notch1 point

Its been a while since my last update, so I thought I´d just get one out now. Basically, I have had a LOT to do at school recently, and so there hasnt been much time to write. Chapter 7 has actually been 50% finished for a few weeks... Good news though, my vacation starts in a few days, so during it I will have a lot of time to write. I will get chapter 7 finished then, and hopefully I´ll even get far into chapter 8! The end is near folks I´ll edit this once the chapter is finished!1 point -

It is if you have permission from the publisher and tehy have no problem with it... there are however companies such as sekai project that only allow gameplay to be posted of their vn's up to a certain point of it so others don't get spoiled and buy the game for themselves...there are a few youtubers who play vn's such as "The Anime Man" "Lost Pause" and a few other ones. so aslong as you credit the company themselves and permission is not a problem then you should be okay. That's my imput and what i know about it, others will know more for sure1 point -

Arcadeotic reacted to Dergonu for a topic
This would depend on the VN and the company that made it. In a general sense, monetizing videos of the entire game in pure form, with no voice over, cuts etc would literally just be stealing the game and is of course not allowed. Reading up on fair use and actually cutting the video correctly / turning off potentially copyrighted music etc might make it a bit less of a problem. Again though, it really depends on what VN it is and what exactly is in the video.1 point -

MangaGamer will no longer offer Steam Keys due to fraudulent purchases
mitchhamilton reacted to CeruleanGamer for a topic
Instead of blocking everyone from not getting a Steam Key, only block the motherfuckers who have only made 2 or less purchases in their account. Because this is usually how the frauds get by. The ones who have bought more than 10 games and/or been a loyal and clean customer for half a year should be excluded.... Also time limit on the Steam Keys would be great. 30 days should be more than enough....1 point -
About the true process behind the uncensored cg
Forgetful Frank reacted to Good_Haro for a topic
No, this is untrue, CryingWestern is misinformed on this particular subject. We very rarely have had CGs redrawn. The only game in recent memory that we had to do this for was Cartagra because a handful of uncensored assets were lost (I believe it was less than 10% of the CGs). Generally if the uncensored CGs do not exist, the game is released with mosaics intact. I believe some of the confusion may be coming from the fact that we do some de-mosaicing in-house, but this simply involves reprocessing the original PSD files (namely, turning off the mosaic layer and re-generating all of the variations), not redrawing anything. Occasionally, our image editors will do some minor touch-ups (shifting some elements around so they line up correctly with the mosaic removed or adding a bit of shading if the underlying art was left flat or was miscolored) because quite frequently very little care is put into the art beneath the mosaics because it isn't meant to be seen in the first place. A few companies do put a lot of effort into what's beneath the mosaics (ClockUp for example), but many don't bother because the art was always intended to be censored.1 point -
Mmm... because I replayed Lost Azurite, I thought I'd do a bit of comparison... also because I didn't feel up to playing Sengo or Dragoon yet. Fake Azure Arcology is based some time before Lost Azurite, in Amahara, an arcology completely cut off from the outside world. It is a city that basically tries to maintain a sense of the 'outside' inasmuch as it is possible while essentially living inside a giant dome. Seasons and the sky are simulated, as is weather, and it is even possible to cook real food (though it is reconstituted through the recycling systems for the most part). The element of the setting most central to the story is 'Flight', a type of race-battle involving fast-moving airplanes dogfighting while struggling to reach the goal first. The protagonist, Chihiro, is a former pilot who lost the ability to fly due to a certain traumatic event. He acts bright and cheerful and is something of a troublemaker, but he is constantly struggling with his desire to return to the skies. Near the beginning of the VN, he suddenly finds himself rescuing a blonde girl from a downed aircraft, and that is how the story really gets started. To be honest, most of this story is the heroines beating up on the protagonist because he is so utterly hopeless at anything other than making trouble and flying. I'm pretty sure anyone who has watched anime from the late nineties and early 2000's will recognize the 'punching bag protagonist', who seems to spend all his time getting insulted and treated like crap by women who love him anyway. To be blunt, he is that type. For those who can't stand this type of situational comedy, I honestly have to warn you against playing this. Reti, the blonde girl, is Noel's counterpart in this story, in the sense that she originates from the same place (and even has a brief cameo appearance in the true end of Azurite). She is cheerful, free-thinking, and a bit cat-like. She drags Chihiro around behind her as she explores Amahara, and it is her appearance that drives the feelings of the various heroines out onto the surface. Rio is... a girl that really looks like she should be yandere. Seriously. In fact, there are a lot of moments, both in her path and otherwise, where you almost see her that way. She and Chihiro are osananajimis, and their past is complex and wrapped up in the events that caused Chihiro's trauma and the aftermath. She is what is called a 'heavy' woman, in the emotional sense, and that is the primary cause of conflict with her and Chihiro throughout the story. Akira is an imouto-like character (sort-of) who is also Chihiro's osananajimi... but she is also from a powerful family that serves as a lodestone for the trouble in this story. Her path is, to be honest, mostly involved with that family and its problems. It is also the weakest path, looking at it from an objective perspective. Haruko, the final heroine, is the protagonist's former rival, a fellow pilot who went through training school with him. Her path is one of the better ones (if you are just going for detail, Rio's is the best), and it is the most intimately involved with the sport of Flight, for reasons that are self-evident. Overall, to be honest this story does not in anyway match that of Lost Azurite. I don't say this as an insult, but Lost Azurite was both darker and more unconventional. For that reason, those who like Lost Azurite might very well hate this one and vise-versa. That said, both times I played it, it was a fairly interesting (if at times irritating due to protagonist issues) trip into the future, and I honestly liked most of the characters, despite everything. I do think this VN could have used a much longer and more solid set of after-stories, and I would have liked to see an added ending for a certain character, but other than that, most of its flaws are forgivable.1 point
