    What are you playing?

Finished Code:Realize. That's gotta be one of the most satisfying True Routes I've ever read, it's not like it was LB! feelsy or Zero Escape mindblowy or anything, but everything just came together to create a fantastic story from start to finish. Lupin's da best, btw, hands down, ~~ Oh, and I guess a minireview, Story: 8/10: Just some stoic, amnesiac, poisonous girl hang'ang out with her five capable handsome dudes in 19th century Steam London. All of them have their own backgrounds and motives for ending up where they are and what starts off as a mutual alliance slowly becomes much more... Also throw in some secret organizations, conspiracy plots, and character-centric mysteries with a dash of kyaa! romance and you've got a pretty thrilling story on your plate. Characters: 9/10 Like I said, some stoic, amnesiac, poisonous girl and her five capable handsome dudes. Van Helsing the Vampire War Hero badass, Frankenstein the nice guy Alchemist, Impey the To-Love-Ru Lala's male counterpart, Saint-Germain the mysterious on-the-level-of-Half-Life G-man & Sephiroth clone, and Lupin the world's greatest gentlemen thief. You can't get a more colorful cast than that, and their bond and companionship was just so great to read throughout Art: 10/10 YOU DON'T KNOW HOW MANY DUDES i WOULD BANG- JK, BUT MAN YOU GOTTA ADMIT THAT'S SOME HAWT ART. Cardia herself is great too, especially with dat hat. I like dat hat. Music: 5/10 Sorry, once I notice music getting repetitive, it's all over! They're decent tracks that are appropriate for the setting, but they don't stand out and are limited. ~~ Overall: 8/10. Read it

  3. I've been working on a visual novel where you can play a full space game adventure similar to "escape velocity nova" or star control 3, but enjoy all the best of a visual novel. Choices that matter, romance, hand drawn character and background art. Demo: *Includes the entire first chapter http://www.indiedb.com/games/omni-link-space-visual-novel-action-rpg/downloads/omni-link-demo-space-visual-novel-action-rpg The non-spoiler version of the story is this: You start the game as a man of little consequence. The first chapter: "A Hero Will Rise" defines exactly what you become. There is something called "The Virus" which has awakened near the edge of the galaxy. People are painfully discovering that this is a real threat. The Virus consumes everything it touches. You encounter an advanced warship, and an explosion binds you with an entity known as Ectype D-8. You quickly learn that there is more to this ship and A.I. that meets the eye. The artificial intelligence is so advanced, she is able to absorb energy from other ships and duplicate them. As well as quantum burst, administer atmospheric regeneration, quantum entanglement, and of course...Omni Link. You find out about these abilities as you play. Your choices in the game affect what happens to the story and gameplay in meaningful ways. You'll discover this in the demo. What ships you acquire, who you save from the Virus threat, and what relationships of love, hate, and friendship you form. Who do you trust? I need a small amount of funding to pay the art/music artists involved: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/994920323/omni-link-space-visual-novel-action-rpg *This gives you chance to be a part of the game early on, and even design some content. since the background is black, my character descriptions don't show up Real-time tactical combat Choices that affect gameplay and story in minor and large ways Huge two path end game split Hand drawn character and background art Epic emotional music *Let me know what you think of the demo and story.

  7. The US governing system is technically speaking a republic, not a democracy. It was never intended to be a true democracy, nor fully responsive to the whims of the majority. The very idea of constitutional limits on government is anti-democratic because it limits the will of the majority. Citizens were intended to influence the overall direction of government, but the system itself was crafted to be fairly rigid and resistant to change.

  10. For the past 10 months I've been working on a secret project on and off. This is that project. A Fan Case created using an online case maker for Ace Attorney. Just the other day, I finally finished it. And after some extensive playtesting, I'm finally ready to share it with the 'world'. This case features: Terrible Writing Underdeveloped Characters Bad Puns Therefore, if you're looking for any of these things, go over to your local internet browser and play it for the very accessible price of FreeTM. Don't know what Ace Attorney is? Or maybe, you want to learn how to play this case using the case player? I've got you covered with this fantastic tutorial made by yours truly. What are you waiting for? Go over to this thread and play it now! All you need is to click the link under the section designated: "Link:" Ace Attorney Online is the website, forum, community, and free online case maker I used to create this fan case. You can play it on your browser using a PC or laptop. I'm fairly sure it doesn't work on mobile devices. It is preferable that you use Firefox as your internet browser, since Google Chrome doesn't support some of the effects, but it's a minor thing. If you have any criticism, opinions, or just want to flame me, please leave your comments on either this thread or the other one I linked to. Thanks for playing! ...If you do play, that is.

  12. Hollow Ataraxia happens after Fate... But that one is a fandisc and story-wise it doesn't have a lot to offer. It will give you more of the FSN characters, though. Fate/Extra and Fate/Extra CCC are PSP games and don't really have anything to do with the main universe of the series, other than having a few cameos... CCC is like the best thing ever if you're a Sakura fan, though. Fate/Zero is a prequel-sequel anime, dealing with the story of Emiya Kiritsugu and the previous holy grail war. The Fate series is generally linked to Tsukihime and Kara no Kyoukai, and people slap them together as the "Nasuverse" - Tsukihime is more dated than Fate and the stories going on are unrelated, but they're of the same type and have the same atmosphere (I'm yet to meet someone who likes one and doesn't like the other, lol.) After you read Tsukihime you can also watch the Carnival Phantasm anime, which is a crossover between Fate and Tsukihime and quite possibly the most rolf thing I've ever watched. Kara no Kyoukai is a great series of anime movies, too. While you'll see very few relations between characters in those series, they all share the same lore, so to speak. If you don't mind older art, I'd definitely start with Tsukihime (the VN. The tsukihime anime is probably one of the worst abominations I've seen, and the fandom has a running gag that "there is no tsukihime anime" because of how bad that was), though the Fate/Zero anime is also a great place to go.

The Fate series is pretty popular. You might want to check out Tsukihime... That one is even more dated than Fate, but together with Kara no Kyoukai, they make the main Nasuverse titles. As for Fate itself, I'd point you to the Fate/Zero anime if you haven't watched it already. Anyway, welcome to the forums. Hope you have fun around. 14. Could you please write more details about his personality or about his character in general? There is too few information. Also, what is your intention with his design? You say he's not evil, but the amount of triangular shapes and sharp lines he has says otherwise. If you are trying to 'trick' the player with something like "Jerk with a Heart of Gold" or subverting a trope, then it's fine. However, if your intention is not something like that, you should work again on his shapes before deciding any color. But then it's hard to say anything concrete unless I have more details about him.

  16. Finishing Rio's route, and I think compared to Michika's route it was much more better. The drama was not usual jealousy (Well, although there is though), but more like Rio was too shy to let everyone knew that she and MC are lover. As for Rio, she was quite reliable to handling her sisters problem, quite selfless at that (She need to delay her date with MC several time) and she was quite tsundere, also she was quite couldn't take the joke. For MC here, I think he was quite usual clueless one, but he was more reasonable here compared to back at Michika route. Also MC here like to tease Rio in regard of pubic hair (And still pervert), causing Rio to mad at her Aniki (Oh, Rio called MC Aniki). For her scenes, it was involving XXXjob (Handjob and footjob were the example) and Rio's seiyuu was quite experienced. The name was Ogura Yui and her role was Himiko in Eiyuu Senki, Eika in Ikikoi, Yui in Flyable Heart, Maple in Nekopara, and Kagami in Subahibi. Anyone, once again as of now I think the best route in Imopara would be Rio's route for now. As of now, for next route I'll play Aya's route. I'll try to write my comment about Aya's route here later. I think I'll not play harem route though. PS - Oh, by the way I kind of a bit surprised when Rio called MC by his default name (Souichirou), because usually all of imouto only called MC by the variation of the word that mean older brother.

  22. This isn't really a WEE discussion thread, but I don't know if there is one of those, so off we go! IMO, WEE Episode 1 has a good story but a few key unlikeable characters which make the experience less pleasant. In contrast, WEE Episode 2 has half of a good story, and pretty much only has likeable characters. Unfortunately, that part about only having half of a good story results in a pretty unsatisfying ending. I'd suggest waiting until Episode 3 is out, then read both in a row. I've been waiting impatiently for Episode 3 for a while now...

  24. The characterisation of Tesla and Neon was done well enough if you ask me, and I don't see the necessity of according too much importance to the other characters who obviously don't need a lot of attention and don't fail at playing their part imo. About the structure, it fits the visual novel really well and instead of taking it as a whole you should look at every chapter as a single story (even if they are related to each others), I don't know if you saw Mushishi but they're similar in the way that chapters very rarely follow each other directly and instead they feel more "distanced". You're reading a story with small stories in it, and each story in Gahkthun delivers the same moral (if I remember correctly). And fight scenes are used to end these stories, you can say they drag but at the same time you can consider that every "enemy" has to face some kind of struggle against the Radiance (Tesla) and everything it represents, if I wanted to further prove my point I'd have to give my own interpretation for each battle but I guess you get the general idea. A lot of the stuff that is criticized is, imo, intentional AND justified, that's what is the most important; if you can find a meaning in a lot of stuff that may not click with you, well, it won't change the fact that you don't like it but you can't say it's inherently flawed as the author obviously had something in mind and didn't write about nothing. The fact that he didn't like it whether he reflected on what bothered on him or not doesn't annoy me at all but if you write a review you have to be conscious that your standards aren't everyone else's and even if it's still nothing more than an opinion, reviews are still taken very seriously and that's a shame.

  27. Poor characterisation, a bloated story, a structure which is too rigid, a lack of suspense in fight scenes due to overpowered characters and therefore fight scenes which drag - these are valid points made by Kaguya (keeping in mind reviews are opinion.) Characterisation is important in all forms of fiction, and too many SoL scenes in a story with a plot will usually negatively affect that plot. It’s usually considered a negative. So I'm not understanding that point about criticisms which don't apply to every kind of fiction. I suppose that the review lacks discussing themes is one valid critique of the review. One thing I will say about the VN community’s tastes is that they tend to over-estimate the value of ideas and underestimate execution. It’s very similar to fanfiction in that regard, fanfiction traditionally tended to be more about cool ideas. The VN community embraces the same concept – Ever 17 was good because whoa, plot twist! Never mind that most of it is dull because the writer can’t pace or execute worth a damn. Ideas and themes are great when they add complexity to an already engaging story. To Kaguya, this story was not engaging. The idea that contemplating the themes would automatically transform a poor score to a great score is wrong, imo. But anyway, I like that there are more than one viewpoint about VNs on offer, negative reviews offer give a reader more information than positive ones. This review is very valid as an opinion, which is what a review is TBH.

  28. What bothers me with this review is that I get the impression the VN was judged based on a set of already existing criterias that obviously doesn't fit with every kind of fiction. It feels like the reviewer expected stuff that wasn't to be expected. What stands out the most in my opinion, and what sums up my thoughts quite well is this sentence : " It removes any trace of surprise from the story, as well as any excitement for what’s coming next, and it gets really boring really quickly", I wonder when the effect of surprise became an absolute requirement to write a good story. And there are many other claims like that one in the review. A very superficial read in my opinion as I can hardly see any good faith in it, not a single line is dedicated to the interpretation of the story and its themes or even to the questioning of the author's intent; when something doesn't seem right at first sight then it's flat out bad. It's a bit sad. What a Beautiful is a series that tend to be a lot more symbolic than explicit and I feel like the reviewer tried to weigh an elephant with a ruler instead of a weighing scale I might be a little harsh but I found the " I definitely wouldn’t recommend it to a normal reader" to be rather unpleasant.

  33. I've finished my first route in Ozmafia now. I went for Pashet the cat girl first for obvious reasons. The route was a bit short and more about friendship, but I still liked it. Pashet herself is the don of famiglia 'Boots' (don't ask) and somehow resembles lady Oscar from The Rose of Versailles a bit, one of my all-time anime favorites. She's a great character and I really wished her route would have been a bit longer so I could have seen more from her. The VN itself is extremely stylish, starting from the unique and elegant character designs, over the fantastic soundtrack to the somehow flowery writing style and conversations. Although it could be probably be criticized that it's more style over substance, even if I've probably not seen enough yet to give an accurate judgement about that. The voice acting was very good, BUT there is a catch. There's just partial voice acting and not in the sense of one chaper this way and another chapter that way, very often it changes from one sentence to the next which was a bit annoying to be honest. It actually felt a bit like the script was changed or edited after the voices were recorded. The setting is some kind of crazy mixture of popular western fairy tales, Italian mafia gangs and French aristocracy. Actually, the whole city gave me some Parisian vibes. Though I had a few culture days in that city about two months ago, so maybe it was just nostalgia. The ruling famiglias in that city are really one of a kind. The Oz famiglia are some kind of gentlemens club and more or less the main famiglia that takes the protagonist girl in at the start. The 'Grimm' famiglia are a real chaos club with Hansel and Gretel being the VN version of Bonnie and Clyde. The Wolf gang seems to be Ozmafias take on the 'Sons of Anarchy' while the 'Boots' famiglia somehow resembles french royalty. Obviously, the VN takes itself not all too seriously, even if the story has technically some rather gory parts inbetween which are usually just not shown. But it's somehow remarkable how different the whole style is in comparision to common bishojo titles with high school setting. The guys are (for obvious reasons) represented much more mature and civilized which is a rather strong contrast to the usual teenage simpletons. Fuka, the protagonist girl was more on the simple side so far, but she's still charming and likable. I'm not really sure yet how many routes I want to play. For now I definitely want to play Axel's route, since he's the 'knight' tsundere character and was pretty cool so far. After that, we'll see.

  36. Okay, let's go paragraph by paragraph. Untagged spoilers, obviously. That's because Zero Escape is a sci-fi thriller at heart. Complaining that "the plot drives everything" is nonsensical, because it is structured in a way that an intricate framework of events is unveiled through the characters, and there is nothing wrong with a story prioritizing plot over characters, especially in a series like Zero Escape which doesn't have some 50+ hours to leisurely build character through character interactions. That said, do you think that character motivation isn't present enough in Zero Escape? Really? Check out the bad endings. So often, the characters' own motivation brings demise to the participants. Axe END. Practically every betrayal in VLR. The identity of Zero in each case. Even if you think so, Zero Time Dilemma will be significantly more character-driven as it's about the same length as VLR (confirmed by Aksys PR) but now we have insight into the general personality and motivations of many characters. Haven't the slightest clue what you mean to say about "free will". If you want an Uchikoshi VN that deals more with that theme, go play Remember11. A group of (mostly unassuming) people thrust into a completely unexpected situation in which their life is in danger? Of fucking course they would react. Zero Escape's circumstances put human nature to the test. Family with Clover-Snake. Deceit with Akane and Santa. The shadows of one's past with Ace. ZE is a treatise on how humans react and change when put under extreme pressure, and since it's a trilogy about people trying to survive a death game desperately, it doesn't make much sense that it would need to include much "proactive goodness". Not much connection with "strong themes" either, life in itself is a "reaction circle" and there's absolutely nothing wrong with a fictive work taking the approach of character building through analyzing reactions to particular circumstances. Nonsensical claim, in other words. And here is where you display a fundamental misunderstanding of the plot. Akane is not able to DIRECTLY make Junpei do things, even though the narration is by Akane you make the door choices and whatnot as Junpei himself. Akane merely observes and receives information. It is only by the true ending (TRUTH HAD GONE) that Akane manages to convey something to Junpei in the future, hence triggering the sequence of events that culminates in Junpei solving the sudoku and saving Akane. If the plan does not work out, it causes a paradox- hence, Akane disappearing in Safe END I think it was. On the first half, that's THE FUCKING POINT. Akane is Zero, and the fact is made all the more harrowing by the fact that she was forced to do that because she needed it to survive the Nonary Game as a child. She had to be a conniving, sly, cruel person to accomplish that -she had to risk the life of a childhood friend to save her own- and understandably she also wanted revenge. The thematic significance you seek is right there. Is Akane moral? What does the events of 999 mean to Junpei? How will the others be affected? As for the "as if that makes any sense" part, it is fucking fiction. The liberties the game takes from reality -The relevant one here being the morphogenetic field- allow the existence of such an event. Unless you believe the morphogenetic field theory as presented ingame is self-contradictory, this claim is factually unsound. Complaining about the game being a "master plan" instead of a "simple death game" also seems to contradict your sentiment that you want to see "stronger themes", which wouldn't be possible on the same level if 999 were a "simple death game". Murdered people have no free will now? Are you for fucking real? "Why can't she do the same?" What the hell do you even mean? Think you forgot to type something there. Also lol, 6 endings and you fucking complain that they went for too many. Some of them are ob-fucking-viously bad endings, as in, game overs. In a horror/thriller game, it is expected that there would be shock factor. "We didn't see how Ace executed his plan." - Why the hell is this even a problem? That adds to the mystery and the shock. Would have to reread it to see why Akane has the sun key. Seven was possibly made to lie. Also remember that Junpei's actions throughout the game determined the past (Akane heating up in Sub END was due to the heat of the incinerator from 9 years ago for example), so it is entirely possible that the past was indeterminate until Junpei took certain actions. Unless Junpei connects with Akane at the sudoku, Akane dies- since Junpei has not yet connected with Akane from the past, they exist in a possible paradox. You have to change the past by saving Akane. Don't remember the memory alteration deal. You do not even mention which aspect of time travel ruins the ending or the story, or what exactly is its "fault". RE: character complaints Ace- A person who is okay with (dangerously) experimenting on kids for money but yet cracks under pressure in the game, a conniving bastard, yes. His depth comes from the contrast of his façade and his true self, does not have to be likable. Santa- Again, unlikable =/= bad Akane- Yes, it was all a ruse, THAT'S THE FUCKING POINT. THAT'S WHY PEOPLE FIND THE ENDING EMOTIONAL. IT'S THE INCREDIBLE STRING OF EVENTS BEHIND AKANE'S MOTIVATIONS AND PERSONALITY THAT MAKES 999'S ENDING SO MEMORABLE. Lotus- Again, not everyone has to be a central character. Let me introduce you to the concept of a "side character". Hoooooo boy. Sigma is more powerful than Junpei. The VLR Nonary Game was structured (with all the AB game stuff) to train Sigma and Phi's jumping abilities. Sigma receives information from other timelines in the true ending, but this ability is imperfect in terms of retaining memories from other timelines until you finish the rest of the game and develop Sigma's time jumping ability. From Sigma's perspective, there's a linear line, which an observer from outside would interpret as jumping back and forth in time. There's an AB round where if you ally, you're betrayed. Then you jump and pick Betray, and Sigma, after the other person allying this time, mutters something along the lines of "Weren't you supposed to betray?!", surprising himself too. In short, Sigma's abilities aren't consistent throughout VLR- they develop as you solve more and more and more rooms and mysteries. Tenmyouji and Clover are weaker espers compared to Sigma and Phi, so their strength gets channeled. Nothing in VLR suggests that Phi is more powerful- they are of equal capability, likely the reason why both of them can use their abilities at the same time. Although I don't remember much about Radical-6 strengthening esper powers, it doesn't immediately mean everyone would be as capable as Sigma or Phi. No single choice is affected solely by morality, feelings and particular circumstances do come into account. Not exactly sure how the vote-switching-in-the-same-round works, but I think it was with Phi and morphogenetic shenanigans were involved. You don't explain how that counts into everyone being allegedly out of character. Sigma does have beliefs, it's just that they don't differ all that greatly from the average altruistic person- when you betray Luna, he does feel heavy regret for example. The flowchart is based on choices YOU make, hence why they have two branches, ALLY and BETRAY. Not sure about the inconsistency of the virus myself. What do you mean, "how are they even communicating"? Everyone's brain is slowed down by root 6, so relative to each other they speak at the same tone. Sigma's age IS mentioned, several times. Not hard to imagine that cybernetic implants are common by 2028. Their moves wouldn't feel less restricted since the mental slowdown accounts for that, and the internal pressure of Rhizome-9 is suitable for living and thus, likely to be similar to the feeling of the Earth's air. They don't throw anything. That said, it is kinda weird that the stuff left out in the open doesn't easily float. Hmm. Akane's wishes are not just her own, her wish is to save the world, and she needs other espers for that. Not everything is "prearranged"- point E, ZTD's goal for the VLR cast, does not yet exist. It's the same reason as to why people in 999 claim Akane died, it's because the past needed to be tampered with. The difference between 999 and VLR timelines is that 999's bad endings create a paradox (Akane wasn't saved by Junpei, but is present in the new Nonary Game). Compared to those divergences, VLR and Point E's timelines can coexist. You seem to hate to see how the pieces of the puzzle that is the games' storyline fit together, impressive that you still like 999. For most people, that cathartic feeling of the game being a very intricately designed puzzle is what makes Zero Escape so amazing. edit: Think of it this way: Everything isn't "predetermined", instead, think of it as every single detail about the world and characters being an integral part of the story. Isn't that a beautiful thing? Moreover, according to ZE Wiki, people DO feel a bit weird due to being on the Moon. I think there was a bit of dialogue about this in the lounge somewhere.
