  1. TODAY WE CELEBRATE THE BIRTH OF THE GREATEST GODDAMN NATION EVER BIRTHED Y'ALL For those of you unfamiliar with the country, let me give you a brief summary of the US of A. America is located here: As America has the greatest GDP (both quantitatively and qualitatively) in the world, we trade a lot of things. Our largest export is freedom. In exchange for this 24-carat unadulterated gluten-free freedom, other countries shower us gratefully with oil. Landmarks of America's culture include the apple pie, baseball, cheeseburgers, and Irish people. The official symbol of America is the bald eagle. America was founded in 1776 when Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, in which we said "GO TO HELL" to George III of England, to which George replied "i don't have any power anymore you should talk to the prime minister also we're called great britain now because scotland lost all their money when they tried to colonize panama for some reason," to which we replied, "WE WON'T STAND FOR YOUR MONARCHIC TYRANNICALITY ENGLAND." So we fought a bloody war and stripped ourselves of the colonial despotism of England, but then we were like "alright we still need to trade with you and stuff so we're cool now." However, the only form of unity we had back then was the Articles of Federation which kind of sucked, so we wrote the Constitution and subsequently freedomed all over the place. The first 10 amendments to the Constitution comprise the Bill of Rights. Many argue that the First Amendment is first because it makes us the most freedomy. I draw from this the corollary that the amendments are ranked in order of freedominess. For example, the Thirteenth Amendment, which bans slavery, comes after the Second Amendment, which guarantees us the guns that exemplify our liberty. With that all established, we then kept moving to the West while sort of pushing away some guys who already lived there, but we let them have tax-free casinos now so it's all cool. Oh, and when the founding fathers were countryfying the country, they were all like, "Should we ban slavery?" and someone else was like, "Ehhhhh, that'd cause a lot of problems. I'm sure they'll come up with a solution to that later on." So then we had the Civil War and everything was solved! All thanks to a guy named Abraham Lincoln, who proclamated the Emancipation Proclamation which banned the shizzle out of slavery. Well, sort of. That's a story for another day. Then we had a big Industrial Revolution where we prospered but remained pretty isolationist. However, we still wanted our good friend Japan on the other side of the world to be less isolationist, so we sent Matthew Perry over to talk about opening up their borders, and also sent a giant indestructible navy with him because I guess he was a pretty self-conscious person. Later on, a bunch of European guys were fighting over who's better at faking soccer injuries or whatever, so after they all beat themselves up we went in and finished it all. And then President Woodrow Wilson was like, "Okay, you guys gotta stop this war shizzle," so he created super awesome peace-keeping international unity freedom organization The League of Nations and invited everybody. And then we decided not to join it. “I can predict with absolute certainty that within another generation there will be another world war if the nations of the world do not concert the method by which to prevent it.” So after a while the Europeans had another world war over whose bicycle was the coolest or something, and this time we got pretty involved. President Franklin D. socialist-lite Roosevelt brought us through the war against the freedom-hating Nazis and the Chinese-people-hating Japanese people. But he died before it ended so President Harry S my-middle-name-is-literally-"S" Truman saw it through to the end by dropping an atomic bomb on Japan and then told them to make us TVs and stuff. And then we saw that our former friends Homie Joe Stalin and Mao Zedope weren't cool and they were all like, "Yeah, well you're not our comrade anymore," and we eventually got into a war in Korea and Vietnam and lots of other Ching Chong Chang lands, but then the USSR died of bad economy syndrome and China decided they could instead go to war with us by giving us lots of plastic products and stuff. And that's a history of the United America of America. There were also some other significant people and events in America's history that you'll need to talk to a history man about because I'm busy. And with that, Happy America Day! Go spread the greatness of this nation to all your friends so that they will aspire to someday be America! (I ACCIDENTALLY POSTED THIS 10 MINUTES TOO SOON I'M SORRY AMERICA)

    Forum Rollback

When I opened Fuwanovel sometime after Tay's "scientific" experiment I happened to notice something was off. After extensive research I came to the conclusion a couple of posts are missing. This is clearly a problem with the site and I am, therefore, making a thread in the section of the forum dedicated to "Reporting Site Problems". I have, however, another problem. Tay has yet to make his typical thread telling all Fuwans to panic and riot, and this is rather alarming. Without Tay's thread I feel completely lost and terrified. It's horrible. I'm about to panic here. I sincerely ask that a thread be made post-haste indicating who we should blame (clearly Nosebleed*), why, how, where, when, and teaching us how to panic and riot properly. That is all. Fixing the rollback is entirely optional. *Nosebleed has claimed he isn't to blame. While this is clearly suspect, an addendum shall be added as a show of good faith. This is said addendum.

    Idol Manager

TLDR: Hey! I'm shilling our business sim / dark comedy Idol Manager that offers a more realistic, "grimbright" take on the genre. Coming 2017 for PC, Mac and Linux. The premise: You take on the role of manager at a small (but growing!) talent agency. As you cultivate and train the newest generation of young pop stars, you'll have to decide who to hire and who to fire, who gets promoted when things go well and who gets reprimanded when things get sour. The personal lives of these young celebrities are a part of your business, and the life of a pop star isn't always a happy one. Their crowning personal achievements can be your greatest commercial successes, but their emotional meltdowns and PR nightmares can spell financial disaster for your company. Features: Idol Manager is a more realistic take on the Japanese pop idol industry, with a strong focus on the controversial issues that real producers have to deal with. Decide how to deal with crises including gossip, vandalism, stalkers, or threats directed at your agency and the pop idols you manage. Manage relationships between the different pop idols in your group, as you deal with cliques, internal feuds, and bullying. Grow your fanbase by varying your tactics and appealing to a wide variety of demographics. Produce singles, hold concerts, and organize overseas tours to capitalize on your group's popularity and bring in revenue. Hire staffers to help deal with logistics and keep your agency running smoothly. Screenshots Project status: About 40% done We do plan to have a small Kickstarter for it in the future to fund more features (including 18+ content) and speed up the development, but we'll finish the game regardless of its success. Keep up with the project: Website @idolmanagergame Tumblr @sadambober - designer, programmer @kuiperdesu - co-designer, writer @ai_wa_ - artist Cover art by @Ninamo_lcr

  8. Since the translated prologue script for Majo Koi Nikki is more or less finalized, I decided to kill two birds with one stone. So here I am, kicking off the editing blog I've been meaning to work on for a while, and also trying to build some hype for our TL project, where we are planning to release a patch for the official free trial version of the game soon, as a signal of how things are going towards our final patch for the full game. Like many things in life, translating occasionally means making trade-offs. With a large text, some detail and nuance isn't going to come through, regardless of how good at it you are. As a translator, TLC, or editor, one prime responsibility you have is to identify as many of those nuances and references as you can. But even if you're quite successful on that mark, you'll still occasionally be faced with a set of translation options that precludes maintaining everything; even among the nuances you found, something must be lost in translation. What should you do? Simple: evaluate your options and choose the best trade-off available. This is a story about a trade-off. The first sentence of the VNDB summary of Majo Koi Nikki (courtesy of these fine fellows) is: "Alice lives alone in an old barber shop in the shopping district of the rose-colored town." Rose-colored town? Now, don't get me wrong, there's a whole lot of pink in this game, especially in the UI, but the city itself isn't anything you could call rose-colored, unless you were talking about plant stems. See the below night-time aerial shot of the town for reference to how not pink it is, as well as just how pink the UI is. So where did that oddly specific phrase come from? Well, it turns out there's this Japanese phrase, バラ色, appearing all over the original script. It'd be pronounced "barairo", and literally translated, it of course means rose-colored. It most commonly appears modifying a word for town/block/neighborhood (that's their "rose-colored town"), and then with that it also appears modifying a shopping district (finally giving the "shopping district of the rose-colored town" in the VNDB summary). It also modifies a train station; obviously the train station located in that neighborhood. The first translator to come across this phrase, recognizing it as a neighborhood name, just romanized it: "Barairo District", "Barairo Station", "Barairo shopping district". The last phrase has a minor issue (you might wonder, is it a subset of Barairo District, or just a different name for the same whole place? it's the former), but there is a bigger problem here. First off, having multiple translators on the project gave us an interesting view: the phrase got translations as varied as "rose town" and "the pink district". And that spurred us towards consciously thinking: isn't some obsession with pinkness, flowers, or roses kind of an important thing in this game? Definitely more green than rose-colored. Alas, this map view and its cute chibi sprites aren't part of the free trial. I'm writing this blog, of course, because the answer was yes. Rose-colored stuff are an obvious and important motif. And better yet, pretty much every time the writer wanted to put that motif to use, this exact adjective, "barairo", is the word used in the original JP text to signal it. One late-breaking character in the prologue actually has "Barairo" in his full title, and his nickname is a portmanteau of his title: "Baragon". If that's not enough, meanwhile, the adjective "barairo" is the crux of what I view as probably the most important line in the whole prologue (which I'm not going to say any more about; gotta save the goodies for later, after all). To a Japanese speaker, all these things will layer over each other with no problem; it's the same word, after all. But we're not going to literally change that character's name even if it sounded remotely natural to call this guy "Rose-coloredgon" (or, God forbid, "Rogon"; sounds like a hygiene product), and we can't start using "barairo" in English as an adjective to say something is rose-colored; something's got to give. So here's the trade-off we made. First of all, the "Barairo District" gets an English-translated proper name: Rose Village. Sounds nice and quaint, though we technically lost the color from the literal translation. The whole English phrase "rose-colored" starts sounding cumbersome when you try to put it in a proper name, hence, Rose Village. Doesn't it sound like a great place to go get a haircut? "Rose Village Station" and "the Rose Village shopping district" fall out of this naming pretty naturally and sound fine. For the cases where the phrase was simply used as an adjective, rather than a proper name, we're consistently using the adjective "rosy", to get maximum resonance with all the roses we just strewed around the text. Now what about that guy with "Barairo" in his full title? Similarly, it got turned into "Rose"; his title sounds pretty good that way. I'm not telling you what it is. And his nickname? Still Baragon. Which is no longer a portmanteau. That's what we lost. That's the nature of a trade-off. It's unfortunate, but all things considered, it's a small sacrifice for the greater good. And what did we get in trade? Why, only all those lovely roses that the English readers will now see and connect together in their minds, consciously or unconsciously, and which should resonate strongly with the pink UI and pink CGs you'll come across while reading this lovely VN. The patch for the free trial of Majo Koi Nikki isn't out yet, but it's on its way. If you're the romantic type, maybe think of it as a bouquet of roses, from us to you. Enjoy!

  9. Regarding Watashi ga Suki nara "Suki" tte Itte! which it was just announced will receive an official localisation by Mangagamer. I've played Sugar+Spice and Sugar+Spice2 from Chuablesoft and this game, sukisuki, is effectively their Sugar+Spice3 sequel. I picked 1 and 2 up originally in Japan purely because of the confession system because in a moege the confession moment is arguably the most important scene in any route and the thought of having control over it was rather exciting. Indeed it was always a little scary and exciting when you chose to try to confess to a girl. Probably one of the more unexpected things about these games was out of the blue tackling a story involving incest. It's probably not a big deal that there's any spoiler in this section since these are now old games and almost certainly won't get a localisation. These are long games in the 30-50 hour reading range. SS1 was a head injury amnesia charage story while SS2 was a non-descript moege story. Presumably SS3 shares many qualities with their earlier instalments. Their game system has a "choose-your-own-adventure" feel to it where time moves forward and you have a certain number of points to expend in each month. You get to choose which scene to play from a selection of scenes, each scene expending a certain number of points, and they give you a hint as to which heroine's route they're part of based on the girls shown in the scene icon. Some scenes are mandatory checkpoints and take you to the next month/time period. As you gain favour with each girl, your likelihood of getting a favourable response to a confession increases over time. It's not actually a given that that's the successful way to make them your partner. Over the 2 games I played, some girls you simply could not actually get from a confession scene - either you had to confess to them multiple times to get them to finally give in, or the way to get them wasn't actually the confession at all. After 3 failed confessions to the same girl the game would usually come to an abrupt ending. Some you could get by confession but there were also other situations where you could be surprised by ending up with them before you got a chance to confess. The ability to try to confess to them is unlocked after a certain amount of play. What they also did was that you could/should play through each heroine's route actually 3 times over as each play through unlocked more scenes/extended scenes with them, or allowed you to confess to them earlier, or they might even confess to you first. You really missed out on quite a few scenes if you did not play them through multiple times. All in all it was actually a lot of fun, and it allowed you to simply skip scenes entirely on 2nd playthroughs, yet earn the girl's favour by expending your points on that scene, making it not too repetitive, but personally I'm not a big fan of needing to play the same routes more than once. The main issue I really had was that there are many common scenes in each month, so that even if you end up on one of the heroine's routes, the story was unchanged and you suddenly seemed to be neutral towards all the girls in common scenes despite actually partnering up with one of the girls. I'm unsure whether this latest instalment is any better in that regard. Overall SS1 was very good for me at 8/10 for me but SS2 they reused all the background CGs and set it up in the same world 4 years after SS1, reusing characters and referring to the first a lot which was both good and bad, and the neutral common scene and choosing scene aspect became a detriment and it was repetitive and boring and I rated it 6/10. I suspect it didn't help a great deal that I didn't warm to 2 of the heroines as well. I'm guessing/hoping a complete rewrite in sukisuki with new engine, world, and confession system will make it much better than their rehash in SS2 and am looking forward to it.

  10. Confession: I don't understand fireworks. People waste a huge amount of money to pollute the air and litter garbage everywhere. And I'm not an environmentalist or anything, but a car at least has a purpose; Transporting people or objects from one point to another. Nothing is gained from shooting fireworks. And there are cheaper ways to admire the night sky.

  11. Unfortunately, fan translation is in rather the grey area where they've simply no right to translate a title. Every fan translator should be keenly aware that their work may face a Cease and Desist order at any time. From this point of view, the localisation is actually giving them an opportunity for their work to be shared with the world, and they even get paid for what was initially a thankless job. If it never got licensed none of this would be an issue, though. But if it never got licensed, you must admit, the original developers would not be duly compensated for making the VN in the first place. I was going to start my reply with that, but then I remembered throwing oil in fires is something old people do. That is certainly a matter of personal preference, and I have no objections to your opinion. I, too, often feel the H-Scenes are missing when they aren't there, even though I don't actually read them in the first place If all companies acted on the same principles, though, there will surely be a handful of titles that we'd never get because a Japanese Company may simply be sufficiently stubborn to never acquiesce and localise the 18+ version. I think variety and balance is the key. With companies like Jast and Mangagamer who will focus on 18+, with companies like Sekai, who will take anything they can get their hands on and hunt for the little doujin guys, and even Japanese companies doing their own (and others'!) localisation jobs, we're surely well-set for a somewhat stable future for VN's in the West.
    3 points
  12. Contrary to other VN localisation companies, Sekai concedes and gives up when they don't see any other option. If the Japanese company doesn't want to release 18+ content then Sekai just wont, whereas other companies might have a fallout with that particular company and ruin any chances of eventual localisation of other titles, 18+ or otherwise. I see this as a good thing. Take this very example: Sekai localised G-Senjou but failed to secure an 18+ version. The game didn't sell very well* (not necessarily because there was no 18+ version but that's irrelevant). AkabeiSoft makes a second attempt with Frontwing, and they prepare a kickstarter. The first thing that happens is fan outcry at the lack of an 18+ version. At this point, not only are they in negotiation with Frontwing, a fellow Japanese company, they're doing a kickstarter, where fan opinion makes or breaks a project, and they also have a precedent: The all-ages localisation of their previous title didn't sell well, despite the alleged fanbase they had in the west. You must admit at this point that Frontwing had quite a bit more cards to negotiate with than SekaiProject. Going back to my initial point, let's assume SekaiProject tried again**. Since they accepted AkabeiSoft's terms there's no bad blood, and they've even been partners before! Whereas Mangagamer or Jast may have failed to secure a deal even the first time around, SekaiProject could continue trying to localise their titles: at worst, they never manage to bring out 18+; at best, they eventually convince the company using the previous game's sales figures or some other factor. Even if we never get the official 18+ releases, it is odd to assume one localisation company would be able to magically attain an 18+ version whereas others could not. Frontwing, which pulled off the magic, was and is in a considerably favourable position compared to just about all of the other localisation companies. And there's always fan patches to add the H content back in if worst comes to worst. If we're in a community who translates entire VN's from scratch, where's the issue with a simple H-Scene patch? I will concede, however, that given all I said, it is probably best that Frontwing (or some originally Japanese localiser) attempts to localise an 18+ title where the Japanese company is averse to the notion, as opposed to Sekai, because we never know what Frontwing may be able to pull off, but Sekai pretty much guarantees we only get all-ages if the Japanese company so wishes it. *My entire argument hinges on G-Senjou selling relatively poorly. I currently have no facts to back this, nor do I know where to find them, only that I have this impression from presumably reading it somewhere (I think SP's head made a comment on twitter about it). If someone knows where/how I could go about confirming or denying this, that'd be just fantastic. **It is entirely reasonable to assume that, if a title had poor sales due to the all ages version or what have you, a Japanese Company may be reluctant to release another title in the West or via SP. That's where they pull off their trump card: Kickstarter! It reduces/negates quite a few of the risks, permitting a second attempt to be made. Again, look at Sharin no Kuni's localisation efforts.

Sharin no Kuni is also a crowdfunding project, and Akabeisoft2 had to be weary of fans refusing to back it due to the lack of 18+, torpedoing the whole thing before it got off the ground. While g-senjou wasn't crowdfunded, AS2 had no incentive there. Sekai Project has been trying to get fans to express their desires more in an organized manner for ages, and even still everyone just claims it's a futile and resort to petty snipes on random message boards. The fact of the matter is that it's not futile, and never has been. If enough people let the people making the decisions know that an 18+ version is desired, then the chances of it happening are actually way higher.

  25. I'm the translator and head of the LB! Project, and I assure you, I haven't abandoned the project. The project is still active, I just had to suspend it for a while. The reason why I haven't announced any updates since a year or two, was because: 1)I was also a part of Türkçe-Oyun, a vokuntary Turkish game localization group, and I had to focus on its projects more, because they needed to be released ASAP. 2)School (Of course, not a big deal, or a valid excuse, and no sarcasm intended) 3)I didn't have internet connection at home until 2 weeks ago, so my computer was in my dad's office, which had internet connection. It was hard to work in a stuffy place and the time I could spend in the office was pretty limited. You might ask why I can't work without internet. It's because I look up for explanations of the words that I don't know, and see if there are phrases similar to what I've used for certain lines (to see if my translation is legit or not, in short). 4)I translate at a slow pace when it comes to VNs, and I'm lazy a bit (Of course, it's not a valid excuse either, it's my fault for being an irresponsible person.) I want to mention that me and 2 friends of mine formed a translation group called BakaYume Fansub, and our main focus is visual novel translation. We translated Planetarian (TL and editing complete, QC/Testing in progress) and we have another project on-hold. I will also keep translating Little Busters! personally. Tay talked to Ren and I guess Ren assured him that the translation project is still active. He just doesn't want to deal with the constant questions so he decided to remove all reference of it from his site. ...Which seems like a pretty unwise thing to do if you want to dodge attention, but oh well. So no, it's neither a secret project or an official license. It's still just the same project. Make of that what you will.

  37. Havoc, have you looked into frozen concentrated orange juice futures recently? It's important to keep your retirement in mind at all times, and with all the recent market volatility there, I'd say you should definitely be considering it: http://www.nasdaq.com/article/orange-juice-on-track-for-third-session-of-losses-20160622-00558

  39. I was thinking Fault Milestone too but you could never control that rotation yourself (silence the pedant's tech demo does have that but that only came out a few weeks ago)

  41. might be because xseed has already their hands full at current projects and simply lacked the manpower in doing more. at least it´s not those lazy faggots at NISA, couldnt have been any worse if so.

  44. Sometimes the "censored" release is the original work as the author intended, Fate Stay Night is an example.

Although this sounds like a completely pointless and futile effort, looking at the way Frontwing was able to convince Akabei Soft2 into allowing the 18+ patch for Sharin no Kuni because of the fan feedback, everything is possible I guess. It still does frustrate me that Sekai Project doesn't fight more for 18+ releases though. (Using the same example as above, SP put all the blame on Akabei Soft2 for the censorship of G-senjou, and yet Frontwing made an 18+ patch happen in a few weeks with the same company... Although they might have a bit of an edge being a fellow Japanese VN company, it pretty much does tell us that SP didn't do everything they could. If they did, I'd be able to look at Shiratori's boobs in English ) Of course, a Baldr Sky release, censored or not, is freaking hype. The rest from SP doesn't interest me. Baldr Sky, Maggot Baits and Suki Suki is my top 3 from the announcements. (The way Clephas butchered Island really made me lose interest in it. Will still play it though, but my hype kinda died a while ago.)

I blame Maggot Baits, that announcement was so hardcore the site just died. So basically, obviously Nosebleed's fault.

Sekai Project also announced A Magical High School Girl game but uh not really a vn so I'm pretty much ignoring it. They have apparently two more announcements: Boku to Koi Suru Ponkotsu Akuma. Suggoi Ecchi! and Koi ga Saku Koro Sakura Doki
