    VN element: Slice-of-life

One of the single biggest elements of most VNs in existence is slice-of-life. This entire post is based on this fact, and it isn't one that can seriously be argued against by anyone who has read more than a hundred VNs. So what is slice-of-life? With VNs, it is a type of scene where bits and pieces of daily life, without any particular conflict, are portrayed. These can be humorous, mildly touching, or informative. So what is the value of slice-of-life as a tool for storytelling? For one thing, it provides an opportunity to portray and develop the characters in their most 'natural' setting. Do you want to know what a character is like in peaceful times? Slice-of-life scenes are generally the tool used. Do you want to slowly develop a mild romance between two characters? Then slice-of-life is your friend. In this sense, slice-of-life is a highly valuable tool. While extreme scenes, such as violent scenes or ones with psychological or intellectual conflict, are also valuable for developing characters and their relationships, it is the slice-of-life scenes that form the skeleton to which the conflict and/or drama adds flesh later on. However, the problem with slice-of-life is that it is basically an exclusion of extremity. It is difficult - virtually impossible - to give flesh to a character with only slice-of-life. For better or worse, people bare their true strength and value (or weakness and uselessness) in situations where they are being tested by circumstance or opposition (whether intense or mild). This applies to VN characters, as well. Slice-of-life is your friend... unless that's all there is. Sadly, a lot of writers make the mistake of thinking otherwise. I can't count how many VNs I've experienced that make this mistake, to one extent or another. Slice-of-life as a tool is a valuable friend and ally... but as the sole tool for constructing a story, it falls pathetically short all too often. Edit: Understand, I came to these conclusions as a result of playing numerous VNs that made that particular mistake... and I'm including 'standard Vn romance' as slice-of-life. Romance is something I'll touch on separately in the next entry.

  3. Congratulations you've discovered the point of her character. Her speech is just as bad and cringey in Japanese and I guarantee leaving those words in English would have nowhere near a similar effect.

  5. Then you obviously didn't read my review. Long story short: couple good characters, a couple forgettable ones, and a few so annoying I absolutely loathed them. Plot is absolutely solid. Art is fine. Route structure is garbage, and at a micro scale, the writing is terrible and basically ruined the game for me. Bottom line, I strongly advise against 11eyes. I didn't like Princess Evangile when I read it, either, but even that was a less annoying experience than 11eyes was for me.

  6. Princess Evangeline was probably my favourite out of all of these, i would recommend that.

By transforming the simple archetype characters into lovable fleshed out kemonomimi cuties, we're certain this slice-of-life comedy spin will put a smile on your face. 9. TA-DA! Shoujo City is back, and better than ever. ^^ For several months I have been working on a new version, completely remaking the game - this time in full 3D and with much better graphics and design. Check the video to see the first preview of the new version. Also, now I have a new website for the project - http://shoujocity.com and will post there regular updates on current development progress for everybody interested. Feel free to post your ideas of what you would like to see in the new game. Now I have much more freedom in implementing new features and ideas. One of them is clothes, cosplay, and character customization - it was really difficult to implement using sprites due to amount of work to draw all the sprites from different angles. This feature is fully implemented already in the 3D version.

  10. Hi it's me! I'm back! I got married and stopped playing VNs (since they wouldn't go over too well with the wife) so I kinda ditched the community, but now I'm back! See I've got a foolproof plan: while my wife may complain about me playing games where I romance cutesy anime girls she certainly can't raise an eyebrow at me playing games where I romance hot anime guys. So I've dusted off my good ol' PSP and am getting myself a nice backlog of otome games (I'm going off of a few Japanese lists of otome games with good plot for suggestions). And once I play through them I'm going to review them on a blog here! The whole concept is looking at these games from a straight male perspective, which may provide interesting insight as I'm obviously not the target demographic. What I need is a good name for the blog. I was going to use 'Brotome', but that has sadly already been taken by a guy doing a similar gimmick on his Youtube channel. So now I'm fresh out of ideas for a good, catchy name for my blog. I've thought of a few dumb ones: Reversing the Harem Sausage Matsuri But I'd love to hear some good ideas on what a good 'guy reviewing otome games' blog name would be!

  11. Oh I had no illusions that this wouldn't get funded pathetically quickly, there are endless examples of games being successful simply because they have name recognition.

  12. I'm back, bitches Though, I sincerely doubt that anyone noticed me gone, ahaha. I just finished the third part of Monster Girl Quest, and while it was not a masterpiece by any means, I ended up liking it far more than I thought I would. The characters and world had a way of growing on me, and the plot ended up significantly more expansive and large scale than one would ever, ever expect of a monster girl/reverse rape nukige. The protagonist has character by the end; while he's puerile and immature in the beginning, he grows and changes and by the end is more fleshed out than most VN protagonists (though, that isn't saying very much, ahaha). I also genuinely adore Alice, the main heroine, and her interactions with Luka were one of the best parts of the game in my opinion. The ending was incredibly, incredibly rewarding, and I was very glad that I ended up picking this up in spite of myself. With that said, there are several large problems that keep me from recommending it, much to my dismay... for instance, the art is horribly, horribly inconsistent. You have attractive, well-designed characters such as Alice and Tamamo, and then you have nightmare fuel such as... *shudders* leech girl. Yes, I will never understand the notion that adding breasts and vaguely female features to a leech makes for an arousing experience... and designs that are downright repulsive to look at, coupled with poor art, was a frequent occurrence in this game... the music, apart from a few standout tracks, was also relatively lacking. There wasn't really anything that made my ears bleed (apart from the H scene track), and I suppose it did its job well enough, but don't go in expecting much from the music department. My biggest problem was, in the end, the H content. I've certainly never been one for playing VNs for the porn in the first place, but I imagine that even if I was MGQ is not where I would go for it. The H scenes are generally brief, generally drawn poorly (apart from Alice's), and all in all not something that I can imagine enjoying. Even if I was explicitly looking for monster girls, I'm sure there's a better VN that I could find. And I can't help but feel that it would be much better with the smut replaced; I don't think they do much, and at its core the VN is a genuine and enjoyable experience. However, because of them, and to a lesser extent the art, I can't see myself recommending this one to a great many people. With that said, if you don't think that the heavy H content would be a deterrent to you, I would say that you might want to give this one a shot. I really do feel that although this one isn't for everyone, or even most people, there are also quite a few who would probably enjoy it if they tried it. tl;dr: I r8 snek/10 would get assaulted by Alice again.

  13. Hey all! So, there hasn't been progress in a while. And that's entirely my fault. Unfortunately, due to real life concerns, I have been forced to prioritize other things over this project. While I don't want to step down, I don't realistically know when I'll have an opportunity to really work on this. Thus, if somebody wants to take over this project on the editing side, it won't be painful. The process is actually pretty easy, as Nandemonai has done a phenomenal job on the translating front. It's been a blast working with him, and I wish I could give him the time he deserves, but I hope somebody else will take the reins and get this project up and going! If not, and if I can find time again, I'll get back to work on it!

  15. Well, if it makes a difference I actually meant the Kotori XP thing or whatever it's called. Idk Kotori's was the only decent route in Da Capo, so I figured I would give the revamp of it a read. I think it's pretty much between Princess Evangile and Kara no Shoujo at this point. I've tried to forget that spoiler for 3 years, it just isn't happening Yeah, I think Kara no Shoujo is my next pick. The spoiler is unfortunate, but I do really want to move onto Kara no Shoujo 2 and 3 so I'm going to try for the 4th time to get through it lol Thanks for all the help everyone! After Kara no Shoujo and Kotori XP I'll give Princess Evangile a read since it got the 2nd most votes! Happy reading folks.

  17. You won't regret any second you spend with Kara no Shoujo. And you will also want to start Cartagra and Kara no Shoujo 2 after you finish it. You can also try G-Senjou no Maou is one of the best titles I've ever read, if you like the mistery/mafia context.

  18. Go for Kara no Shojo... Believe me it's awesome. I started it cuz I was bored but then after a few hours I got hooked into it so much that I started learning Japanese for it's third edition.

  19. I've still got Grisaia 2/3 + the "OVAs" to read, but long term I definitely plan to check this out. Gonna be hard to match up to the incredible cast of the original series, but hopefully they give it the old college try. It's especially difficult to see Juicy Yuuji being topped personality wise, but I do like this new guy's fabulous character design; generally a fan of guys with long hair. Though when I was scrolling through the thumbnails on their official site I was under the impression there was no male MC due to them all looking like girls.

  20. 11eyes ive heard only good things about. princess evangile was probably my favorite vn the year it came out. demon master chris is meh. has some fun moments but just alright. play on normal mode first though. i did easy first and missed out on something and didnt care enough to give the game a second playthrough. hinatabokko is okay. nothing too special about it. bazooka cafe, just a simple nukige. its a real damn shame about kns as i wouldve recommended it right away. so, vns i highly recommend to not really are in this order. Princess evangile, 11eyes, demon master chris, bazooka cafe, and hinatanokko. id say wait with kns since thats a major spoiler. maybe youll forget about it with time.

  21. I read 1 and 2 before i got 3, i actually posted the question here about how relevant the series is to each other here before starting my da capo journey haha. I only did sakura, nemu and kotori for 1 and did all the routes for 2. It is relevant to each other due to that one character and since i did it back to back, i found it better to feel the depth of her situation far more. I didn't mind the routes i did in dc1, though i do agree that its fairly aged, the translation isn't the best and the story wasn't very consistent but i won't say more, less spoilers appear. It was okay-ish but i was just passing through to get to DC2 so i didn't mind it. DC2 was solid, all the routes were fairly enjoyable and the translation, story and art improved. Its not perfect, but its solid and i enjoyed it. I just entered the true route for DC3, i'm glad that I read it in that order back to back though, for me, it added quite a bit to the experience. Since you are going backwards from 3, DC2 is good on its own and since you liked DC3, personally I don't think you'll regret the read. Cheers .

  22. I haven't read 11 Eyes and Demon Master Chris (and barely touched Bazooka Cafe absolute ages ago). Out of the remaining ones, Kara no Shoujo would be my pick. Evangile and Hinatabokko are both frankly shit, but at least Hinatabokko was drawn by my favorite artist. Why would you do that to yourself?
    1 point
  23. Yeah, the recommended order is, well, 1-2-3 (what a shocker)... but I agree that DC2 is much better than DC1. You do get some extra insight by reading DC1. Like, you'll get a better appreciation of the twist in Nanaka's "power" if you'd read her grandma Kotori's route in DC1, stuff like that. Is it worth it? Eh, it's your time. But remember one important thing, young padawan: DO NOT READ DC IF
    1 point
  24. Well, if I had to read it again I'd play Nemu's and Sakura's route from DC 1 (the main heroines), and then go for full DC II (if it's plus communication version even better) and DC III. And you can also watch the anime series if you like.

    VN element: Slice-of-life

A lot of the problem is that a lot of slice-of-life writers don't seem to understand that experiencing the daily life of a boring incompetent is... boring.

    VN element: Slice-of-life

True words. Although I wouldn't call myself a particular fan of slice if life VN's, I do consider slice of life 'scenes' as very important for almost every VN. They are the calm breaks inbetween the action or more serious story parts of a VN, and essential to develop characters and relationships. Ideally, they happen in 'sine waves', iterating between story and slice of life parts. Though there's certainly still a lot to say about how to write actual good slice of life scenes...
