Generally speaking, most protagonists in VNs are teens reliant on their parents for money, food, and shelter. As such, it is pretty hard to find a VN where the protagonist is capable of supporting himself/herself, and some of my favorite protagonists are of this type. For the purposes of accuracy, I'm excluding people merely living alone on money being sent to them by relatives. I'll also name chuunige with this type of protagonist in a separate section at the bottom. Incidentally, I reluctantly excluded Akatsuki no Goei's Kaito because he sponges off anyone who will let him, lol. I'm also excluding 'high fantasy' with no characters from Earth. The List Nanairo Reincarnation Ojousama wa Gokigen Naname (protagonist is actually fairly wealthy due to his dirty-dealing, lol) G-Senjou no Maou Namima no Kuni no Faust The Grisaia series (yes, I count Yuuji, as he works for his money and shelter) Haruka ni Aogi, Uruwashi no Hataraku Otona no Ren'ai Jijou Hataraku Otaku no Ren'ai Jijou Koisuru Doll to Omoi no Kiseki (though he is basically living off an inheritance) Koisuru Otome to Shugo no Tate series (protagonist is of the same type as Yuuji) Rui wa Tomo o Yobu Suzunone Seven (pays his way with magitech sex toys, lol) Minamijuujisei Renka (technically, the protagonist lives off his little sisters... but he was the one supporting them and one other before, until he collapsed, lol) Soshite Hatsukoi ga Imouto ni Naru (protagonist lives in a school dorm but pays his own ways through part-time jobs) the Mecha-con series (all the protagonists here are wealthy) Natsuiro Recipe Sakura Nikagetsu (living off of inheritance) Sumire (though he is miserable) Re:Birth Colony Lamunation (though it is hidden under layers of sexual humor) Sora no Tsukurikata Dekinai Watashi ga, Kurikaesu (utsuge) Hotel. (though at this point, money means nothing, lol) Konata yori Kanata made (living off inheritance, utsuge) Kazoku Keikaku (though this game has aged horribly) Reminiscence Sakura Iro Quartet Sanzen Sekai Yuugi (dark otomege) Valkyrie Runabout Sharin no Kuni Toki o Tsumugu Yakusoku Trouble@Vampire Chuunige Hi no Nai Tokoro ni Kemuri wa Tatanai Izuna Zanshinken Vermilion Bloody Rondo Yurikago yori Tenshi Made Hello, Lady Bradyon Veda Silverio Trinity (but not Silverio Vendetta, since Zephyr is a sponge except in emergencies) Tokyo Necro Ayakashibito (because he is supporting himself and Suzu after a certain point) Sorcery Jokers (the second protagonist) Muramasa Tiny Dungeon series (though this is mostly because he is on a scholarship) Bloody Rondo Gensou no Idea Zero Infinity2 points

How to not be embarassed of buying & owning these games:physcial copies
Cloud87 and one other reacted to DharmaFreedom for a topic
I just want to say that you asked a question, innocently and politely. You admit it yourself that it may be a stupid or dumb question. Heck no matter the age, people can get paranoid about certain things and they'll just like some opinions on the matter to clear their mind. It's not right that what you get in return are people being rude and insulting to you. Its awful. It happens here, I noticed. Once one person insults you, a bunch of others pile on after. It doesn't stop with that one statement. People are so quick judge. Its ironic that the people that are judged so much by society [otaku] end up judging each other just as much. PS: I don't think you have to tell anyone the games you play on your time, just play what you want in your own space. You're an adult and you're purchasing adult games, its not a problem. If someone you know catches you with it then just own up to it or play it off. People aren't going to ask you to elaborate on it right?, just say adult game and that will suffice i think. Solving basic issues of Visual Novel Reader
Infernoplex reacted to MaggieROBOT for a topic
Hey, guys! This is my first post here, but since I saw tons of unresolved issues in older threads, I decided to take the time to sign up and do this faq to help everyone. (I didn't want to necro the oher thread >.< : https://forums.fuwanovel.net/topic/4709-fixes-to-common-problems-with-visual-novel-reader/) I use the VNR frequently and put it to work both on Windows 8 and 10, so I'll try to write all the issues I already encounter and how I resolved them. First, remember to change your system locale to japanese. This solve a ton of problems you might encounter. Okay, here we go: 1) VNR is not translating anything! When the novel is open and running, go to te side menu, and go to "Menu" then "Preferences". 1.1 I'm using offline translators Check in "Locations"-->"Translators" if the path to your dictionaries is correct. Then, check in "Translation"-->"Translators" if LEC or ATLAS is enabled. Scroll down, they are some of the last options. 1.2 I'm using online translators Check in "Translation"-->"Translators" if the one you like is enabled. And, of course, check if your internet connection is okay. Restart the novel. Still nothing? See below. 2) VNR is not translating choices/ some part of the text! This one can be kinda tricky. When the novel is open and running, with text displaying, go to te side menu, and go to "Menu" then "Text Preferences". Check the first option "Keep all threads blah blah blah", save the changes in the blue "SAVE" button in the top left, close and go back. You should see lots of boxes with the text threads. Okay, if the only things you're seeing are gibberish full of numbers, change the text enconding until you find boxes with kanji and the like (or whatever is displaying in the VN screen). Okay, now you need to select the boxes that are displaying THE SAME TEXT THAT IS THE VN SCREEN. Above the box are four options, "dialog", "name", "other" and "ignore". Click in the "dialog" option of the box with the correct and complete text. That should do the trick. No box is displaying the right text? Try another scene of the VN, in New Game (not a saved file) for example. Believe it or not, this actually worked for me once. The right box simply didn't appear in all scenes. Figures... But once you check it in one scene, it will work for all the others. You'll not need to do these steps ever again. But if the text disappears after all this (if you managed to make it work), every time you start your novel, see if the "Keep all threads..." option is checked. When I used VNR in Windows 8.1, for some reason every time I quit the novel, VNR unchecked this option. So you may have to check it again. For choices, you have to do almost the same method. But you have to find the boxes with THE SAME TEXT OF THE CHOICES (Each option should be in a different box) and click in the "other" option above all of them. VNR can't have more than one box selected as "dialog", so select them as "other". Be careful that you may need to scroll up the VNR subtitle to see all of the translations, since it will separate the choices with line breaks. Then again, tons of VNs simply repeat the text of the choices after you select them. So, you can always just save before, select, read and load. Then, why not submit a commentary on VNR with the text of choices? 3) Duplicate text! When the novel is open and running, go to te side menu, and go to "Menu" then "Text Preferences". Check the second "Eliminate infinite repetition..." or the third option "Ignore infinite cyclic repetition", and then save the changes in the blue "SAVE" button in the top left. 4) The side menu you keep mentioning simply vanished! As soon as the novel open, go to "Menu" and uncheck "Auto Hide", it's one of the last options. 5) Original text in the VNR subtitles... When the novel is open and running, go to te side menu, and go to "Option" then uncheck "Game Text", the first option on the left. 6) How do I change the text alignment? When the novel is open and running, go to te side menu, and go to "Option" then uncheck "Text Aligns Center", the fifth option on the right. 7) Text is being ignored because is too long! When the novel is open and running, go to te side menu, and go to "Option" then put the "Length" option in the left at max (500, the bar will be entirely blue) 8 ) Subtitle box is in a weird place of the screen... Hover the cursor around the subtitle box until a tiny box with a x and a music note appears above it. Now click and hold in this tiny box (beside the + symbol) to drag the subtitle. Ta dah! After that, right click in the subtitle box and click save position then lock position. I'll keep updating this, if anyone wants. Maybe add some screenshots...1 point -
The Last Birdling (InvertMouse's 5th year project)
Gibberish reacted to InvertMouse for a topic
Bimonia is one of the last Birdlings alive on this earth. The Birdlings see humans as sworn enemies, and Bimonia has been taught to kill on sight. One day, Bimonia meets Tayo, a human child hunting in the forest. Bimonia fails to kill Tayo, and they instead become friends. Mother will be furious if she finds out, or worse, this relationship may cause tension between the two races to erupt. The Last Birdling explores Bimonia and Tayo's fight for their friendship as the world threatens to tear them apart. * * * Hi everyone ! I want to share with you my next project, The Last Birdling: http://birdling.invertmouse.com The site contains links to a demo, so I hope you can check it out! All feedback is welcome and appreciated. Here is a link to the trailer: There is always a special touch to announcing projects on Fuwa. I started this VN journey with Unhack, which I like to think grew up alongside this forum. When I look back, I realize it has been five years since this all began. Maybe a random like me has no right to boast about a five year anniversary project, but The Last Birdling is exactly that. Thank you for sticking with me through the years. This project originated from a short story I wrote in around 2006 named The Last Dragon. Back then, a common feedback was my narrative contained too much dialogue. As a form of training, I wrote The Last Dragon to see how it would feel to write a story with no dialogue at all. This rule has been abolished in The Last Birdling, plus I have deepened the plot, and now here we are. The Last Birdling has been in the works for over a year alongside Unhack 2. Today, I finally get to show it to you. Thanks to your years of support, I am able to fund this game without Kickstarter. While a funding campaign can be used as another source of promotion, I want to show what a difference you have made to my life. Thank you so much. That said, the journey can be rough. Recently, I have been tempted to take options that may lead to people calling me a sellout. I love money as much as anyone else. That, plus all the hate against western projects, too. Truth be told, I almost have nothing left to give. I wanted to get all dramatic and claim the "last" in The Last Birdling means this is my final project. That was the original meaning, but I have changed my mind since then, as the love is too deep. Let's see how much longer I can be me. To finish off, I would like to leave you with this: Thank you everyone !1 point -

Accept that what you are doing is considered fringe. There is no need to force yourself to try and prove you're proud of it for regardless of what you think, and what others on this forum think, you will be shunned by people for what you do. You cannot convince them that there's nothing wrong with what you do much like others have said about watching porn. Consider it the same way yourself - know that there are billions of people who watch or who have watched porn yet would never admit it in public, nor discuss it as a casual topic, nor try defending it. The difference is that eroge IS fringe outside of Japan, and in Japan it's treated the same way as porn is for the west. There is no need to treat your hobby with some kind of 'gay pride' like behaviour. Unless you want to be a crusader at trying to convince the public that what you're doing is an extension of normality, it will just end up costing you. One must partition different parts of your life and social circles - what would you gain by telling people who don't understand and have no intention of understanding? Unless they were open to the idea in the first place, you'll just end up alienating people. There will be open minded people who understand and accept it but unless you know them well enough to know they are, you should just assume they won't - and it sounds like you already know that which is why you're seeking opinions here. There is also no need to do this by your lonely self as there is a community out there you can share your love of this art form - you've found one right here.1 point

Going off your list I would agree with others with my top recommendation being Kara No Shoujo. The Infinity series and Critical Point are some other options, mainly going off all the sci-fi. If Clannad is what you are considering "realistic" then you could try all the other Key games, Kana Little Sister, Family Project, Kirakira (Kirari's route as others said), or Da Capo.1 point

It's probably unreasonable for me to suggest this to anyone who enjoys VN's in which the depiction of love is undoubtedly framed with shame... but there really is nothing to be ashamed about in the first place. Just like everyone has different tastes in food, everyone has different tastes in side dishes. Even in the way they're presented. And presentation is very important in Japanese cuisine. Long story short if they complain then just tell them they have unrefined tastes. Ok, maybe that's taking it a bit too far.1 point -

Is translated Comyu worth reading?
dfbreezy reacted to DharmaFreedom for a topic
Focus on the great things you heard about Comyu rather than the complaining. People complain about everything mate. Honestly i don't know about the Comyu complains since i usually just ignore stuff like that and decide for myself once I've tried it. Comyu's great, its one of the first few Vns i read. I don't even remember the translation being bad, I think its because the story was really good haha. From what i remember it was a fun ride, the translation was fine and i didn't have a hard time reading it at all. Have fun reading it if you choose to do so! Kagome's made of fire and ice and everything spice. She's one badass woman that's for sure, one of my favourite heroines in a Vn.1 point -

You shouldn't really care what others think of your hobbies. It's your money and your life. It's not like they're a part of it anyway, so why would their opinions matter?1 point -
